Abstract
Headspace Solid-Phase Microextraction coupled to Gas-Chromatography with Mass Spectrometry detection (HS-SPME/GC-MS) has been widely used to analyze the composition of wine aroma. This technique was here applied to investigate the volatile profile of Trebbiano d'Abruzzo and Pecorino white wines produced in Abruzzo (Italy). Optimization of SPME conditions was conducted by Design of Experiments combined with Response Surface Methodology. We investigated the influence of the kind of sorbent, PDMS, CW/DVB, or PDMS/CAR/DVB, and the effect of the fiber exposure time, temperature, and salt concentration on the total area of the chromatogram and the extraction efficiency of ethyl decanoate and 3-methyl-1-butanol, representative of apolar and polar compounds, respectively. The PDMS/CAR/DVB sorbent allowed the extraction of about 70 compounds, whereas only a part of these substances could be extracted on the PDMS and CW/DVB fibers. Reliable response surfaces for the total area and peak areas of the selected volatiles collected on the PDMS and PDMS/CAR/DVB sorbents and, in the latter case, principal component analysis were evaluated to find the optimal conditions. The optimized extraction conditions were applied for a preliminary comparison of the volatile profile of the two wine varieties and in a successive varietal discrimination study based on data-fusion approaches.

Abstract
Background:The sample preparation is the most crucial step in the analytical method development. Taking this into account, it is easily understood why the domain of sample preparation prior to detection is rapidly developing. Following the modern trends towards the automation, miniaturization, simplification and minimization of organic solvents and sample volumes, green microextraction techniques witness rapid growth in the field of food quality and safety. In a globalized market, it is essential to face the consumers need and develop analytical methods that guarantee the quality of food products and beverages. The strive for the accurate determination of organic hazards in a famous and appreciated alcoholic beverage like wine has necessitated the development of microextraction techniques.Objective:The objective of this review is to summarize all the recent microextraction methodologies, including solid phase extraction (SPE), solid phase microextraction (SPME), liquid-phase microextraction (LPME), dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME), stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE), matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD), single-drop microextraction (SDME) and dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) that were developed for the determination of hazardous organic compounds (pesticides, mycotoxins, colorants, biogenic amines, off-flavors) in wine. The analytical performance of the techniques is evaluated and their advantages and limitations are discussed.Conclusion:An extensive investigation of these techniques remains vital through the development of novel strategies and the implication of new materials that could upgrade the selectivity for the extraction of target analytes.

Abstract
A nonaqueous micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography method with indirect LIF was developed for the determination of strobilurin fungicide residues in fruits and vegetables. Hydrophobic CdTe quantum dots (QDs) synthesized in aqueous phase were used as background fluorescent substance. The BGE solution, QD concentration, and separation voltage were optimized to obtain the best separation efficiency and the highest signal intensity. The optimal BGE solution consists of 40 mM phosphate, 120 mM sodium dodecyl sulfate, 15% v/v water and 15% v/v hydrophobic CdTe QDs in formamide, of which apparent pH is 9.5. The optimized separation voltage is controlled as 25 kV. The resultant detection limits of azoxystrobin, kresoxim-methyl, and pyraclostrobin are all 0.001 mg/kg, their linear dynamic ranges are 0.005-2.5 mg/kg, and the recoveries of the spiked samples are 81.7-96.1%, 86.5-95.7%, and 87.3-97.4%, respectively. This method has been proved to be sensitive enough to detect the aforementioned fungicides in fruits and vegetables at the maximum residue limits.

Abstract
Many pesticides are used increasingly in combinations during crop protection and their stability ensures the presence of such combinations in foodstuffs. The effects of three fungicides, pyrimethanil, cyprodinil and fludioxonil, were investigated together and separately on U251 and SH-SY5Y cells, which can be representative of human CNS glial and neuronal cells respectively. Over 48h, all three agents showed significant reductions in cellular ATP, at concentrations that were more than tenfold lower than those which significantly impaired cellular viability. The effects on energy metabolism were reflected in their marked toxic effects on mitochondrial membrane potential. In addition, evidence of oxidative stress was seen in terms of a fall in cellular thiols coupled with increases in the expression of enzymes associated with reactive species formation, such as GSH peroxidase and superoxide dismutase. The glial cell line showed significant responsiveness to the toxin challenge in terms of changes in antioxidant gene expression, although the neuronal SH-SY5Y line exhibited greater vulnerability to toxicity, which was reflected in significant increases in caspase-3 expression, which is indicative of the initiation of apoptosis. Cyprodinil was the most toxic agent individually, although oxidative stress-related enzyme gene expression increases appeared to demonstrate some degree of synergy in the presence of the combination of agents. This report suggests that the impact of some pesticides, both individually and in combinations, merits further study in terms of their impact on human cellular health.

Abstract
This review summarizes the principle and the developments in MEKC in terms of separation power, sensitivity, and detection approaches more than 25 years after its appearance. Newly used surfactants are mentioned. Classical and new sample concentration techniques in MEKC are described. The different detection approaches in MEKC with advantages, limitations, and future prospects are also discussed. This review highlights the wider application of MEKC in different analytical fields. Various recent selected applications of this technique in different analytical fields are reported.

Abstract
The use of capillary electromigration methods to analyze foods and food components is reviewed in this work. Papers that were published during the period April 2007 to March 2009 are included following the previous review by García-Cañas and Cifuentes (Electrophoresis, 2008, 29, 294-309). These works include the analysis of amino acids, biogenic amines, peptides, proteins, DNAs, carbohydrates, phenols, polyphenols, pigments, toxins, pesticides, vitamins, additives, small organic and inorganic ions and other compounds found in foods and beverages, as well as those applications of CE for monitoring food interactions and food processing. The use of microchips, CE-MS, chiral-CE as well as other foreseen trends in food analysis are also discussed including their possibilities in the very new field of Foodomics.

Abstract
Sample stacking techniques remain an important tool for enhancement of the selectivity and sensitivity of analyses in contemporary CZE. This contribution reviews new knowledge on this topic published since 2006. It is organized according to the operational principles used, which include concentration adjustment, application of a pH step, MEKC and sweeping, and transient ITP. Techniques combining several of these principles and comparative studies are also included.

Abstract
The analysis of a group of seven pesticides (i.e. six fungicides: pyrimethanil, procymidone, nuarimol, fenarimol, benalaxyl and penconazole and one insecticide: pirimicarb) in tomato samples by micellar electrokinetic chromatography is investigated. For this purpose, reversed electrode polarity stacking mode and solid-phase microextraction (SPME) have been used as on-line and off-line preconcentration procedures, respectively. Tomato samples were first homogenized and extracted with acetone. After suitable evaporation and reconstitution of the extract in water, a SPME procedure using poly(dimethylsiloxane)/divinylbenzene fibers was used. Due to the strong influence of the sample matrix in the extraction, a matrix matched calibration of spiked tomato samples was developed. The method was found to be linear between 0.5 and 2.5 mg/kg. Limits of detection achieved are below the maximum residue limits established by the European Union and Spain legislation as well as by the Codex Alimentarius (except for penconazole). The potential of the method was demonstrated by analyzing 12 tomato samples (of ecological and non-ecological production) taken from regional cultivars. No residues of the selected pesticides were detected in any of the samples.
