Effects of algae and fungicides on the fate of a sulfonylurea herbicide in a water-sediment system

The impact of pesticide mixtures on various soil parameters has been extensively studied, whereas research on effects in the aquatic environment is scarce. Furthermore, investigations on the consequences of chemical mixtures on the biodegradation kinetics of parent compounds remain deficient. Our research intended to evaluate potential effects by combined application of an agriculturally employed tank mixture to aquatic sediment systems under controlled laboratory conditions. The mixture contained two fungicides and one radiolabeled herbicide of which the route and rate of degradation was followed. One set of aquatic sediment vessels was incubated in the dark. A second set of vessels was controlled under identical conditions, except for being continuously irradiated to promote algal growth. In addition, the algal biomass in irradiated aquatic sediment was monitored to determine its effects and a potential role in the biodegradation of iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium. The study results showed that the herbicide, although hydro- and photolytically stable throughout the study, metabolized faster (DT₅₀ 1.1-1.2-fold and DT₉₀ 2.8-4.5-fold) when continuously irradiated in comparison to dark aquatic sediment. Both fungicides had a significant prolonging effect on the biodegradation rate of the herbicide. In the presence of fungicides, DT₉₀ values increased 1.5-fold in the irradiated, and 2.5-fold in the dark systems. Additionally, algae may have influenced the metabolization of the herbicide in the irradiated systems, where shorter DT₉₀ values were evaluated. Even so, the algal influence was concluded to be indirect.

Degradation kinetics of carbendazim by Klebsiella oxytoca, Flavobacterium johnsoniae, and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia strains

The fungicide carbendazim is an ecotoxic pollutant frequently found in water reservoirs. The ability of microorganisms to remove pollutants found in diverse environments, soil, water, or air is well documented. Although microbial communities have many advantages in bioremediation processes, in many cases, those with the desired capabilities may be slow-growing or have low pollutant degradation rates. In these cases, the manipulation of the microbial community through enrichment with specialized microbial strains showing high specific growth rates and high rates and efficiencies of pollutant degradation is desirable. In this work, bacteria of the genera Klebsiella, Flavobacterium, and Stenotrophomonas, isolated from the biofilm attached to the packed zones of a biofilm reactor, were able to grow individually in selective medium containing carbendazim. In the three bacteria studied, the mheI gene encoding the first enzyme involved in the degradation of the fungicide carbendazim was found. Studying the dynamics of growth and carbendazim degradation of the three bacteria, the effect of co-formulants was also evaluated. The pure compound and a commercial formulation of carbendazim were used as substrates. Finally, the study made it possible to define the biokinetic advantages of these strains for amendment of microbial communities.

Burkholderia: An Untapped but Promising Bacterial Genus for the Conversion of Aromatic Compounds

Burkholderia, a bacterial genus comprising more than 120 species, is typically reported to inhabit soil and water environments. These Gram-negative bacteria harbor a variety of aromatic catabolic pathways and are thus potential organisms for bioremediation of sites contaminated with aromatic pollutants. However, there are still substantial gaps in our knowledge of these catabolic processes that must be filled before these pathways and organisms can be harnessed for biotechnological applications. This review presents recent discoveries on the catabolism of monoaromatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as of heterocyclic compounds, by a diversity of Burkholderia strains. We also present a perspective on the beneficial features of Burkholderia spp. and future directions for their potential utilization in the bioremediation and bioconversion of aromatic compounds.
