Mapping the spatiotemporal dynamics of processing task-relevant and task-irrelevant sound feature changes using concurrent EEG-fMRI

Altered relation of resting-state alpha rhythm with blood oxygen level dependent signal in healthy aging: Evidence by EEG-fMRI fusion analysis

OBJECTIVE

The goal of this study is to explore the changes of spatial correlates of alpha rhythm in the aged adults.

METHODS

Electroencephalogram (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were simultaneously recorded from 27 young and 19 elderly adults at resting state with their eyes closed. Alpha rhythm power fluctuation was extracted from EEG signal of parietal-occipital region and was fused with fMRI data by correlating alpha rhythm with blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) signal using general linear models.

RESULTS

For both young adults and the elderly, the regions correlated with alpha rhythm power were widely distributed in cortical and subcortical regions. However, compared to young adults, correlations between alpha rhythm and the activity of thalamus and frontal regions were significantly reduced in the elderly. In addition, an increased correlation with alpha rhythm was found in frontal, insula and cingulate gyrus regions in the elderly.

CONCLUSIONS

Changes in the roles of the above brain regions may be present in the generation or modulation of alpha rhythm due to age advancing.

SIGNIFICANCE

This study provides novel insight into the alteration of the spatial correlates of alpha rhythm in the elderly by using simultaneous EEG-fMRI data fusion analysis.

A dynamic system of brain networks revealed by fast transient EEG fluctuations and their fMRI correlates

Resting state brain activity has become a significant area of investigation in human neuroimaging. An important approach for understanding the dynamics of neuronal activity in the resting state is to use complementary imaging modalities. Electrophysiological recordings can access fast temporal dynamics, while functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies reveal detailed spatial patterns. However, the relationship between these two measures is not fully established. In this study, we used simultaneously recorded electroencephalography (EEG) and fMRI, along with Hidden Markov Modelling, to investigate how network dynamics at fast sub-second time-scales, accessible with EEG, link to the slower time-scales and higher spatial detail of fMRI. We found that the fMRI correlates of fast transient EEG dynamic networks show highly reproducible spatial patterns, and that their spatial organization exhibits strong similarity with traditional fMRI resting state networks maps. This further demonstrates the potential of electrophysiology as a tool for understanding the fast network dynamics that underlie fMRI resting state networks.

Cooperating yet distinct brain networks engaged during naturalistic paradigms: A meta-analysis of functional MRI results

Cognitive processes do not occur by pure insertion and instead depend on the full complement of co-occurring mental processes, including perceptual and motor functions. As such, there is limited ecological validity to human neuroimaging experiments that use highly controlled tasks to isolate mental processes of interest. However, a growing literature shows how dynamic, interactive tasks have allowed researchers to study cognition as it more naturally occurs. Collective analysis across such neuroimaging experiments may answer broader questions regarding how naturalistic cognition is biologically distributed throughout the brain. We applied an unbiased, data-driven, meta-analytic approach that uses k-means clustering to identify core brain networks engaged across the naturalistic functional neuroimaging literature. Functional decoding allowed us to, then, delineate how information is distributed between these networks throughout the execution of dynamical cognition in realistic settings. This analysis revealed six recurrent patterns of brain activation, representing sensory, domain-specific, and attentional neural networks that support the cognitive demands of naturalistic paradigms. Although gaps in the literature remain, these results suggest that naturalistic fMRI paradigms recruit a common set of networks that allow both separate processing of different streams of information and integration of relevant information to enable flexible cognition and complex behavior.

The spatiotemporal pattern of pure tone processing: A single-trial EEG-fMRI study

Although considerable research has been published on pure tone processing, its spatiotemporal pattern is not well understood. Specifically, the link between neural activity in the auditory pathway measured by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and electroencephalography (EEG) markers of pure tone processing in the P1, N1, P2, and N4 components is not well established. In this study, we used single-trial EEG-fMRI as a multi-modal fusion approach to integrate concurrently acquired EEG and fMRI data, in order to understand the spatial and temporal aspects of the pure tone processing pathway. Data were recorded from 33 subjects who were presented with stochastically alternating pure tone sequences with two different frequencies: 200 and 6400 Hz. Brain network correlated with trial-to-trial variability of the task-discriminating EEG amplitude was identified. We found that neural responses responding to pure tone perception are spatially along the auditory pathway and temporally divided into three stages: (1) the early stage (P1), wherein activation occurs in the midbrain, which constitutes a part of the low level auditory pathway; (2) the middle stage (N1, P2), wherein correlates were found in areas associated with the posterodorsal auditory pathway, including the primary auditory cortex and the motor cortex; (3) the late stage (N4), wherein correlation was found in the motor cortex. This indicates that trial-by-trial variation in neural activity in the P1, N1, P2, and N4 components reflects the sequential engagement of low- and high-level parts of the auditory pathway for pure tone processing. Our results demonstrate that during simple pure tone listening tasks, regions associated with the auditory pathway transiently correlate with trial-to-trial variability of the EEG amplitude, and they do so on a millisecond timescale with a distinct temporal ordering.

The Right Temporoparietal Junction Supports Speech Tracking During Selective Listening: Evidence from Concurrent EEG-fMRI

Listening selectively to one out of several competing speakers in a "cocktail party" situation is a highly demanding task. It relies on a widespread cortical network, including auditory sensory, but also frontal and parietal brain regions involved in controlling auditory attention. Previous work has shown that, during selective listening, ongoing neural activity in auditory sensory areas is dominated by the attended speech stream, whereas competing input is suppressed. The relationship between these attentional modulations in the sensory tracking of the attended speech stream and frontoparietal activity during selective listening is, however, not understood. We studied this question in young, healthy human participants (both sexes) using concurrent EEG-fMRI and a sustained selective listening task, in which one out of two competing speech streams had to be attended selectively. An EEG-based speech envelope reconstruction method was applied to assess the strength of the cortical tracking of the to-be-attended and the to-be-ignored stream during selective listening. Our results show that individual speech envelope reconstruction accuracies obtained for the to-be-attended speech stream were positively correlated with the amplitude of sustained BOLD responses in the right temporoparietal junction, a core region of the ventral attention network. This brain region further showed task-related functional connectivity to secondary auditory cortex and regions of the frontoparietal attention network, including the intraparietal sulcus and the inferior frontal gyrus. This suggests that the right temporoparietal junction is involved in controlling attention during selective listening, allowing for a better cortical tracking of the attended speech stream.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Listening selectively to one out of several simultaneously talking speakers in a "cocktail party" situation is a highly demanding task. It activates a widespread network of auditory sensory and hierarchically higher frontoparietal brain regions. However, how these different processing levels interact during selective listening is not understood. Here, we investigated this question using fMRI and concurrently acquired scalp EEG. We found that activation levels in the right temporoparietal junction correlate with the sensory representation of a selectively attended speech stream. In addition, this region showed significant functional connectivity to both auditory sensory and other frontoparietal brain areas during selective listening. This suggests that the right temporoparietal junction contributes to controlling selective auditory attention in "cocktail party" situations.
