Abstract
OBJECTIVE Recent studies have found a high prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), especially B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (B-NHL). However, most studies did not classify it and analyze the correlation between HBV and its various subtypes. METHODS The authors retrospectively analyzed 1424 patients with lymphoma. Differences in the prevalence of HBV infection in patients with different pathological types of lymphoma were analyzed. The clinical characteristics, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) of HBV-positive and negative B-NHL subtypes were compared according to HBV infection. RESULTS The HBV infection rate in NHL patients was 7.65%, which was higher than that in HL patients (2.59%, p < 0.05). The HBV infection rate in the B-NHL was higher than that in the T-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (T-NHL) (8.14% vs. 4.95%). The HBV infection rate in the aggressive B-NHL was similar to that of the indolent B-NHL (8.30% vs. 7.88%), and the highest HBV infection rates were found in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma, but no significant differences in clinical characteristics, PFS, and OS were seen between HBV-positive and negative patients in the two subtypes. CONCLUSIONS There was an association between HBV infection and the development of NHL and HBV infection may play a role in the pathogenesis of B-NHL, but not T-NHL.

And the treatment is successful in this patient, who had multiple complications and poor prognostic factors. Abstract This report describes a case of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma with MYD88 L265P and KM2DT mutation and decompensated alcohol-related liver cirrhosis. The lymphoma showed a complete response with no MYD88 L265P mutation after four courses of combination chemotherapy. Lymphoma is one of the most common malignant tumors, but cases of DLBCL with cirrhosis are much rarer especially with alcohol-related cirrhosis. And we reviewed the relevant mechanisms. Although we did not find a definite association between the pathogenesis of the patient's alcohol-related cirrhosis and that of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, the treatment is successful in this patient, who had multiple complications and poor prognostic factors.

Abstract
Domestic cat hepadnavirus (DCH), a relative hepatitis B virus (HBV) in human, has been recently identified in cats; however, association of DCH infection with lymphoma in cats is not investigated. To determine the association between DCH infection and feline lymphoma, seven hundred and seventeen cats included 131 cats with lymphoma (68 blood and 63 tumor samples) and 586 (526 blood and 60 lymph node samples) cats without lymphoma. DCH DNA was investigated in blood and formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). The FFPE lymphoma tissues were immunohistochemically subtyped, and the localization of DCH in lymphoma sections was investigated using in situ hybridization (ISH). Feline retroviral infection was investigated in the DCH-positive cases. DCH DNA was detected in 16.18% (11/68) (p = 0.002; odds ratio [OR], 5.15; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.33-11.36) of blood and 9.52% (6/63) (p = 0.028; OR, 13.68; 95% CI, 0.75-248.36) of neoplastic samples obtained from lymphoma cats, whereas only 3.61% (19/526) of blood obtained from non-lymphoma cats was positive for DCH detection. Within the DCH-positive lymphoma, in 3/6 cats, feline leukemia virus was co-detected, and in 6/6 were B-cell lymphoma (p > 0.9; OR, 1.93; 95% CI, 0.09-37.89) and were multicentric form (p = 0.008; OR, 1.327; 95% CI, 0.06-31.18). DCH was found in the CD79-positive pleomorphic cells. Cats with lymphoma were more likely to be positive for DCH than cats without lymphoma, and infection associated with lymphoma development needs further investigations.

Abstract
Studies from high endemic areas, mostly China, indicate that surface antigen positive (HBsAgpos) chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is associated with an increased risk of developing diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), whereas studies in low endemic areas have provided conflicting results. Past infection, serologically defined by negative HBsAg and positive anti-core antibody (HBsAgnegHBcAbpos), has also been suggested to increase the risk of B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) in high endemic areas. We retrospectively reviewed unselected clinical records of 253 patients with DLBCL (54% male, aged 60.3 ± 14.6 years at diagnosis) and 694 patients with different types of indolent B-cell NHL (46% male, aged 61.7 ± 12.8 years). Patients were seen at a single center in Italy between 2001 and 2022 and HBV serological status (HBsAg, HBsAb, HBcAb, HBeAg, HBeAb, and HBV DNA) was analyzed through enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and molecular assays; patients infected with hepatitis C virus or human immunodeficiency virus were excluded. We used an unconditional multiple logistic regression model including as matching variables gender, age at diagnosis, immigrant status, and HBV serological status. Patients with DLBCL had, compared to indolent NHL, a higher prevalence of HBsAgpos active infection (odds ratio (OR) 2.8, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) 1.2-6.3, p = 0.014). Strikingly, patients with DLBCL had also a significantly higher prevalence of past infection (OR 2.4, 95% CI 1.5-4.0, p = 0.0006). Male gender was associated with increased risk of DLBCL independently of the HBV serological status. These findings suggest that both past and active HBV infection may increase the risk of DLBCL in a low endemic area. Our study needs confirmation by studies in areas or populations with different rates of chronic or past HBV infection.

Abstract
Over the years, the pace of developing vaccines for HBV and HPV has never stopped. After more than 30 years of application, the HBV vaccine has reduced 80% of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, vaccine escape variants occur under selective pressure induced by widespread vaccination and antiviral therapy, which results in fulminant infection and horizontal transmission. Several mechanisms have been studied to explain HBV vaccine escape, including vaccine escape mutations (VEMs) in the major hydrophilic region, which leads to a decrease in the binding ability to neutralize antibodies and is the primary escape mechanism, protein conformational and N-linked glycosylation sites changes caused by VEMs, differences in genotype distribution, gene recombination, and some temporarily unknown reasons. However, effective solutions are still being explored. The HPV vaccine has also been proven to prevent 70%-90% of cervical cancer worldwide. Cases of HPV infection after being vaccinated have been observed in clinical practice. However, few researchers have paid attention to the mechanism of HPV vaccine escape. Thus, we reviewed the literature on vaccine escape of both HBV and HPV to discuss the mechanism of the virus escaping from vaccine protection and possible solutions to this problem. We analyzed the gap between studies of HPV and HBV and made prospects for further research in HPV vaccine escape.

Abstract
The evidence for chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) occurrence is well established. The hepatocyte epithelium carcinogenesis caused by HBV has been investigated and reviewed in depth. Nevertheless, recent findings from preclinical and observational studies suggested that chronic HBV infection is equally important in extrahepatic cancer occurrence and survival, specifically gastrointestinal system-derived cancers. Immune microenvironment changes (immune-suppressive cytokine infiltration), epigenetic modification (N6-methyladenosine), molecular signaling pathways (PI3K-Akt and Wnt), and serum biomarkers such as hepatitis B virus X (HBx) protein are potential underlying mechanisms in chronic HBV infection-induced extrahepatic cancers. This narrative review aimed to comprehensively summarize the most recent advances in evaluating the association between chronic HBV infection and extrahepatic cancer risk and explore the potential underlying molecular mechanisms in the carcinogenesis induction of extrahepatic cancers in chronic HBV conditions.

Abstract
One of the most common routes of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is mother-to-child transmission (MTCT). Approximately 6.4 million children under the age of five have chronic HBV infections worldwide. HBV DNA high level, HBeAg positivity, placental barrier failure, and immaturity of the fetal immune are the possible causes of chronic HBV infection. The passive-active immune program for children, which consists of the hepatitis B vaccine and hepatitis B immunoglobulin, and antiviral therapy for pregnant women who have a high HBV DNA load (greater than 2 × 105 IU/ml), are currently two of the most important ways to prevent the transmission of HBV from mother to child. Unfortunately, some infants still have chronic HBV infections. Some studies have also found that some supplementation during pregnancy can increase cytokine levels and then affect the level of HBsAb in infants. For example, IL-4 can mediate the beneficial effect on infants' HBsAb levels when maternal folic acid supplementation. In addition, new research has indicated that HBV infection in the mother may also be linked to unfavorable outcomes such as gestational diabetes mellitus, intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy, and premature rupture of membranes. The changes in the immune environment during pregnancy and the hepatotropic nature of HBV may be the main reasons for the adverse maternal outcomes. It is interesting to note that after delivery, the women who had a chronic HBV infection may spontaneously achieve HBeAg seroconversion and HBsAg seroclearance. The maternal and fetal T-cell immunity in HBV infection is important because adaptive immune responses, especially virus-specific CD8 T-cell responses, are largely responsible for viral clearance and disease pathogenesis during HBV infection. Meanwhile, HBV humoral and T-cell responses are important for the durability of protection after fetal vaccination. This article reviews the literature on immunological characteristics of chronic HBV-infected patients during pregnancy and postpartum, blocking mother-to-child transmissions and related immune mechanisms, hoping to provide new insights for the prevention of HBV MTCT and antiviral intervention during pregnancy and postpartum.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although viral hepatitis causes paediatric hepatocellular carcinoma and hepatic and extrahepatic cancers in adults, there are few epidemiologic studies on paediatric-cancer risks from parental viral hepatitis. In a nationwide study in a viral hepatitis endemic region and with confirmation in another population-based sample, we examined associations between parental hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) infections and risks of cancers in offspring. METHODS We included all children born in Taiwan in 2004-2014 (N = 2 079 037) with 2160 cancer cases ascertained from the Cancer Registry. We estimated risks for paediatric cancers using Cox proportional-hazard regressions. We checked these associations in a nationwide case-control study in Denmark (6422 cases, 160 522 controls). RESULTS In Taiwan, paternal HBV was related to child's hepatoblastoma [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.77, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.05, 2.97] when identified at any time in the medical record, and when analyses were limited to hepatitis diagnoses occurring before the child's birth, risks increased (HR = 2.08, 95% CI = 1.13-3.80). Paternal HCV was related to child's non-Hodgkin lymphoma (HR = 2.06, 95% CI = 1.13-3.74). Maternal HCV was weakly related to increased risks of all childhood cancers [all types combined; HR = 1.45, 95% CI = 0.95-2.22]. The population-attributable fraction of hepatoblastoma for maternal, paternal and child HBV was 2.6%, 6.8% and 2.8%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Parental HBV and HCV may be risk factors for hepatic and non-hepatic cancers in children. If associations are causal, then parental screening and treatment with antivirals may prevent some paediatric cancers.

Abstract
Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) is a subgroup of cholangiocarcinoma that accounts for about 10%-20% of the total cases. Infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) is one of the most important predisposing factors leading to the formation of iCCA. It has been recently estimated based on abundant epidemiological data that the association between HBV infection and iCCA is strong with an odds ratio of about 4.5. The HBV-associated mechanisms that lead to iCCA are under intense investigation. The diagnosis of iCCA in the context of chronic liver disease is challenging and often requires histological confirmation to distinguish from hepatocellular carcinoma. It is currently unclear whether antiviral treatment for HBV can decrease the incidence of iCCA. In terms of management, surgical resection remains the mainstay of treatment. There is a need for effective treatment modalities beyond resection in both first- and second-line treatment. In this review, we summarize the epidemiological evidence that links the two entities, discuss the pathogenesis of HBV-associated iCCA, and present the available data on the diagnosis and management of this cancer.

Abstract
Background When researching female patients with breast or ovarian neoplasms, our research will sensitize oncologists to the prevalence of biliary tract cancers such that early cancers are not overlooked. Depending on different inherited, environmental, and iatrogenic risk factors, patients diagnosed with cancer have a risk of harboring another de novo malignancy. The additional primary identification of late has increased mainly due to progress in both diagnosis and treatment modalities, improvement in life expectancy, and understanding. Methods This is a descriptive study of retrospectively collected data from health records over 15 months, of patients who had biliary tract cancer and incidentally detected coexisting second non-biliary malignancy, from July 2018 to September 2019 at a tertiary care hospital. Details such as age, sex, smoking history, family history, occupation, body mass index (BMI), the organ involved, levels of tumor markers, treatment, and outcome were recorded. Results Six consecutive patients with biliary tract cancer presented during this duration and incidentally detected the second primary was ovarian cancer in three (50%) patients, breast carcinoma in two (33%) patients, and urinary bladder carcinoma in the remaining one patient (17%). The median age at diagnosis was 52.5 years with a range of 40-65 years. All patients were females (100%), non-smokers, homemaker, and without any history of cancer in family members. Only two patients who had a resectable disease were alive at one year's follow-up. Conclusion The mechanisms of carcinogenesis in multiple primary malignancies are mainly genetic, epigenetics, and immunological. Prognosis, as well as the intent of treatment, depends on the respective stages of the two malignancies. In our study, most of the patients were in an advanced stage that demanded palliative care.

Long-term risk of primary liver cancers in entecavir versus tenofovir treatment for chronic hepatitis B. Sci Rep 2021; 11:1365. Abstract
It remains controversial whether entecavir (ETV) and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) is associated with different clinical outcomes for chronic hepatitis B (CHB). This study aimed to compare the long-term risk of ETV versus TDF on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) in CHB patients from a large multi-institutional database in Taiwan. From 2011 to 2018, a total of 21,222 CHB patients receiving ETV or TDF were screened for eligibility. Patients with coinfection, preexisting cancer and less than 6 months of follow-up were excluded. Finally, 7248 patients (5348 and 1900 in the ETV and TDF groups, respectively) were linked to the National Cancer Registry database for the development of HCC or ICC. Propensity score matching (PSM) (2:1) analysis was used to adjust for baseline differences. The HCC incidence between two groups was not different in the entire population (hazard ratio [HR] 0.82; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.66–1.02, p = 0.078) and in the PSM population (HR 0.83; 95% CI 0.65–1.06, p = 0.129). Among decompensated cirrhotic patients, a lower risk of HCC was observed in TDF group than in ETV group (HR 0.54; 95% CI 0.30–0.98, p = 0.043, PSM model). There were no differences between ETV and TDF groups in the ICC incidence (HR 1.84; 95% CI 0.54–6.29, p = 0.330 in the entire population and HR 1.04; 95% CI 0.31–3.52, p = 0.954 in the PSM population, respectively). In conclusion, treatment with ETV and TDF showed a comparable long-term risk of HCC and ICC in CHB patients.

Abstract
AIM Hepatitis B virus (HBV) integration is one of the mechanisms contributing to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development. However, the status of HBV integration in intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is poorly understood. This study aims to characterize the viral integration in HBV-related ICC. METHODS The presence of HBV S and C gene in ICCs and the paratumor tissue was determined by polymerase chain reaction direct sequencing. Hepatitis B virus integration was detected by a high-throughput capture sequencing method. The expression analysis of the genes targeted by HBV in ICC was undertaken in The Cancer Genome Atlas dataset. RESULTS Hepatitis B virus S and/or C gene fragments were detected in 71.43% (10/14) ICCs and 57.14% (8/14) paratumor tissues. Using the high-throughput capture sequencing approach, 139 and 183 HBV integration breakpoints were identified from seven ICC and seven paired paratumor tissues, respectively. Seven genes (TERT, CEACAM20, SPATA18, TRERF1, ZNF23, LINC01449, and LINC00486) were recurrently targeted by HBV-DNA in different ICC tissues or different cell populations of the same tissue. TERT, which is the most preferential HBV target gene in HCC, was found to be repeatedly interrupted by HBV-DNA in three different ICC tissues. Based on The Cancer Genome Atlas dataset, TERT, as well as three other HBV recurrently targeted genes (SPATA18, TRERF1, and ZNF23), showed differential expression levels between ICC and para-ICC tissues. CONCLUSIONS Taken together, HBV integration is a common event in HBV-related ICC. The HBV recurrent integration genes identified from this study, such as TERT, provide new clues for further research on the causative link between HBV infection and ICC.

Abstract
Background Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) caused by chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has become prominent. Prospectively stratifying postoperative risk factors is a challenging task. Methods We retrospectively assessed the relationship between serum gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) concentration and postoperative outcomes in 107 subjects with HBV-associated ICC. Cox proportionate hazard models and subgroup analyses were used to test the hypothesis with adjustment for potential confounders. Results Serum GGT concentration was negatively correlated with postoperative outcomes. For a 1-standard deviation (per-SD) (117 µ/L) increase of serum GGT concentration, the relative risk (RR) for overall survival (OS) and time to recurrence (TTR) were 1.72 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.37 to 2.16] and 1.53 (95% CI, 1.22 to 1.91), respectively. In addition, the RRs of middle and top tertiles of GGT for death were 1.81 (95% CI, 0.98 to 3.32) and 3.56 (95% CI, 1.97 to 6.42), respectively (P for trend <0.001). Similarly, the RRs for recurrence of the corresponding tertiles were 1.70 (95% CI, 0.93 to 3.10) and 3.27 (95% CI, 1.77 to 6.06), respectively (P for trend =0.002). In our study, the negative correlation between serum GGT levels and OS did not differ significantly between groups stratified by age, sex, HBV DNA level, carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) level and liver resection type (all P for interaction >0.05); however, there was a significant interactive effect of serum GGT and adjuvant chemotherapy on OS (RR =0.64 vs. 1.77, P for interaction =0.04). Conclusions High serum GGT concentration is associated with an increased risk of postoperative death and tumor recurrence in patients with HBV-associated ICC. However, this relationship became less significant with the implementation of adjuvant chemotherapy.

Background Regular clinic follow‐up is a prerequisite for optimal antiviral therapy and surveillance of hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). However, adherence to regular follow‐up stays low in practice. This study investigated whether regular follow‐up is associated with decreased liver cancer mortality in CHB patients. Methods A nationwide population‐based historical cohort study was conducted using customized data from the National Health Insurance Service of Korea. The number of hospital visits every 3‐month interval was counted for 2 years from the date of CHB diagnosis. Patients were classified into three follow‐up groups: regular (four to eight visits), irregular (one to three visits), and no follow‐up. The risk of liver cancer mortality was compared among the groups using Cox proportional hazard regression analysis. Results Of the 414 074 CHB patients, 22.9% had regular follow‐up. In multivariable analysis, regular follow‐up was independently associated with decreased risk of liver cancer mortality compared to no follow‐up (hazard ratio [HR], 0.56; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.50‐0.63, P < .001). Regular follow‐up was also associated with the lowest risk of all‐cause mortality (HR, 0.60; 95% CI, 0.57‐0.63, P < .001). Patients with regular follow‐up received more curative treatment (23.1% vs 15.1%, P < .001). Patients were less motivated when they were female, >60 years, of low socioeconomic status, disabled, lived in a rural area, had a higher comorbidity rate, or did not have cirrhosis. Conclusions Regular follow‐up at least every 3‐6 months is significantly associated with reduced liver cancer mortality in patients with CHB.

Abstract
Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has been associated with the risk and prognosis of many malignancies. Nevertheless, the association between HBV and the prognosis of breast cancer is unclear. The objectives of this study were to investigate the prognostic role of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and to integrate HBsAg to establish nomograms for better prognostic prediction of very young patients with breast cancer. Methods: This analysis was performed retrospectively in a cohort of 1,012 consecutive very young (≤35 at diagnosis) patients who received curative resection for breast cancer. The significance of HBsAg in the prognosis of these patients was investigated. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to identify independent variables for disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). Nomograms were built based on those identified variables. Results: Overall, 140 of the 1,012 patients (13.8%) were seropositive for HBsAg. The median follow-up was 67.9 (95% CI, 64.4–71.4) months for the entire population. The HBsAg-positive cohort had significantly inferior DFS (HR, 1.66; 95% CI, 1.07–2.56; P = 0.021) and OS (HR, 1.75; 95% CI, 1.10–2.79; P = 0.016) as compared with the HBsAg-negative cohort. The rates of 10-year DFS and OS were 77.4 and 73.0% in the HBsAg-positive group and 84.1 and 85.6% in the HBsAg-negative group, respectively. In multivariable analysis, HBsAg status was identified as an independent significant unfavorable prognostic factor for DFS (P = 0.01) and OS (P = 0.04) in very young patients with breast cancer. Nomograms were established and displayed good calibration and acceptable discrimination. The C-index values for DFS and OS were 0.656 (95% CI: 0.620–0.691) and 0.738 (95% CI: 0.697–0.779), respectively. Based on the total prognostic scores (TPS) of the nomograms, 3 different prognosis groups were identified for DFS and OS. Conclusions: HBsAg is an independent unfavorable prognostic factor for DFS and OS in very young patients with curatively resected breast cancer, and nomograms integrating HBsAg provide individual survival prediction to benefit prognosis evaluation and individualized therapy.

Abstract
The relationship between hepatitis B virus (HBV) and nonhepatocellular cancers remains inconclusive. This large case-control study aimed to assess the associations between HBV infection status and multiple cancers. Cases (n = 50 392) and controls (n = 11 361) were consecutively recruited from 2008 to 2016 at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University. Multivariable adjusted odds ratios (aORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were estimated using logistic regression by adjusting age and gender. A meta-analysis based on published studies was also performed to verify the associations. Of these, 12.1% of cases and 5.5% of controls were hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) seropositive. We observed significant associations between HBsAg seropositivity and esophagus cancer (aOR [95% CI] = 1.32 [1.13-1.54]), stomach cancer (1.46 [1.30-1.65]), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC; 39.11 [35.08-43.59]), intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile duct carcinoma (ICC and ECC; 3.83 [2.58-5.67] and 1.72 [1.28-2.31]), pancreatic cancer (PaC; 1.37 [1.13-1.65]), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL; 1.88 [1.61-2.20]) and leukemia (11.48 [4.05-32.56]). Additionally, compared to participants with HBsAg-/anti-HBs-/anti-HBc-, participants with HBsAg-/anti-HBs-/anti-HBc+, indicating past HBV-infected, had an increased risk of esophagus cancer (aOR [95% CI] = 1.46 [1.24-1.73]), stomach cancer (1.20 [1.04-1.39]), HCC (4.80 [3.95-5.84]) and leukemia (15.62 [2.05-119.17]). Then the overall meta-analysis also verified that HBsAg seropositivity was significantly associated with stomach cancer (OR [95% CI] = 1.23 [1.14-1.33]), ICC (4.05 [2.78-5.90]), ECC (1.73 [1.30-2.30]), PaC (1.26 [1.09-1.46]), NHL (1.95 [1.55-2.44]) and leukemia (1.54 [1.26-1.88]). In conclusion, both our case-control study and meta-analysis confirmed the significant association of HBsAg seropositivity with stomach cancer, ICC, ECC, PaC, NHL and leukemia. Of note, our findings also suggested that the risk of stomach cancer elevated for people whoever exposed to HBV.

Abstract
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has been reported to be associated with non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). However, the evidence is limited to the seroepidemiological study. There is a lack of evidence showing the HBV infection and integration in NHL cells. Here, we reported that in the Shanghai area, the positive rates of serum HBsAg (OR: 3.11; 95% CI: 2.20-4.41) and HBeAg (OR: 3.99; 95% CI: 1.73-9.91) were significantly higher in patients with NHL. HBsAg, HBcAg and HBV DNA were detected in 34.4%, 45.2% and 47.0% of the NHL tissues, respectively. Furthermore, by using a high-throughput viral integration detection approach (HIVID), integrated HBV DNA was identified from 50% (6/12) HBV-related NHL tissues. There were a total of 313 HBV integration sites isolated from the NHL tissues, among which four protein-coding genes (FAT2, SETX, ITGA10 and CD63) were interrupted by HBV DNA in their exons. Seven HBV preferential target genes (ANKS1B, HDAC4, EGFLAM, MAN1C1, XKR6, ZBTB38 and CCDC91) showed significantly altered expression levels in NHL, suggesting a potential role of these genes in NHL development. Taken together, HBV integration is a common phenomenon in NHL. This finding opens up a new direction of research into the mechanistic link between HBV infection and NHL.

Abstract
Background China is a high endemic area for the hepatitis B virus (HBV). The studies established the epidemiology between HBV and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), but further research is necessary to clarify the potential link between HBV and DLBCL. Patients and Methods A total of 319 patients diagnosed with DLBCL were recruited as cases at First Medical Centre of Chinese PLA General Hospital from September 2010 to December 2018. During the same time, two age- and sex-matched controls were selected for each case, and the control groups comprised of 319 patients with non-hematological malignancy and 319 subjects with non-malignant conditions. Relative risk of developing DLBCL among individuals tested positive for hepatitis B surface antigen was calculated. After that, we retrospectively analyzed clinical data from DLBCL patients with different HBV infection statuses. Results The HBV infection rate of patients with DLBCL (11.60%) was significantly higher than the other two control groups (5.02% and 4.08%), indicating the risk of DLBCL may increased in HBV infections. Meanwhile, this study demonstrated an independent association between HBV infection and poorer clinical outcomes. Conclusion Our study demonstrated that HBV infection may play an important role in the pathogenesis of DLBCL and show poor outcomes in HBV-endemic China.

Abstract
Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections and colorectal cancer (CRC) are prevalent in Taiwan. We carried out a population-based case-control study to assess the association between HBV infection and CRC risk. Using the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan, we identified 69,478 newly diagnosed patients with CRC from 2005 to 2011. We further randomly selected 69,478 age- and gender-matched controls without CRC from the same database. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated to evaluate the association between chronic HBV infection and CRC using a logistic regression analysis. HBV infection was found to be associated with the risk of CRC (OR = 1.27, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.20–1.33). This relationship was similar in men and women. Age-specific analysis revealed that the CRC risk associated with HBV decreased with age. The adjusted ORs for patients aged <55, 55–64, and 65–74 years were 1.63 (95% CI = 1.48–1.79), 1.24 (95% CI = 1.13–1.37), and 1.02 (95% = 0.92–1.13), respectively. In conclusion, this study suggests that chronic HBV infection is significantly associated with an increased risk of CRC. Monitoring the risk of CRC development in young patients with HBV infection is crucial.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the immunity effects after vaccinating different doses and frequencies of hepatitis B vaccines by calculating the seroconversion rates of HBsAb in patients with lymphoma. Clinical data of 315 patients from January 2010 to August 2018 were analyzed. According to different doses and frequencies, the patients were divided into three groups: low-dose group, high-dose group, and high-dose and high-frequency group. The highest seroconversion rate of HBsAb was 82.3% in the high-dose and high-frequency group (p < .05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the dose and frequency of vaccination (p < .001, OR = 2.663), sex (p < .006, OR = 3.106), the Ann Arbor stage (p < .001, OR = 0.195) and whether the chemotherapy regimen contained ibrutinib or not (p < .008, OR = 8.115) are independent factors affecting the immunity effects of hepatitis B vaccine in patients with lymphoma. Increasing doses and frequencies of hepatitis B vaccination may improve the immune response in patients with lymphoma.

Abstract
There is evidence that chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is associated with an increased risk of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) development, and it has been hypothesized an etiological role of HBV in the development of this tumor. Very little is known about occult HBV infection (OBI) in ICC. Aims of the study were to investigate the OBI prevalence and to characterize the HBV molecular status at intrahepatic level in OBI-positive cases with ICC. Frozen liver tumor specimens from 47 HBV surface-antigen-negative patients with ICC and 41 paired non-tumor liver tissues were tested for OBI by 4 different HBV-specific nested PCR. Covalently closed circular HBV DNA (HBV cccDNA) and viral integrations were investigated in OBI-positive cases. HBV DNA was detected in tumor and/or non-tumor specimens from 29/47 (61.7%) ICC patients. HBV cccDNA was found in tissues from 5/17 (34.5%) cases examined. HBV integration was detected in 4/10 (40%) tumor tissues tested and involved HBx and HBV-core gene sequences in 3 and 1 cases, respectively. Viral integration occurred: (a) 9,367 nucleotides upstream of the cat-eye-syndrome critical region protein-5-isoform coding sequence; (b) within the cystinosin isoform-1-precursor gene; (c) within the thromboxane-A-synthase-1 gene; (d) within the ATPase phospholipid transporting 9B gene. Occult HBV infection is highly prevalent in patients with ICC. Both free viral genomes and integrated HBV DNA can be present in these cases. These results suggest an involvement of HBV in the carcinogenic process leading to ICC development even in cases with occult infection.

Abstract
Background Previous studies examining the relationship between hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) show inconsistent results in different endemic areas. Furthermore, studies evaluating the association between stratified HBV status and NHL with a well-matched case-control design are rare. Methods We conducted a 1:2 case-control study enrolling 3502 NHL cases and 7004 controls, and performed an updated meta-analysis evaluating the association between HBV and NHL subtypes. Results The HBsAg-negative/anti-HBc-positive/anti-HBs-positive population, implying naturally acquired immunity after infection, had increased B-NHL risk (Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) (95% confidence interval (95% CI)): 2.25 (1.96–2.57)). The HBsAg-positive/HBeAg-positive population, indicating current HBV infection, had high risk of B-NHL (AOR (95% CI): 6.23 (3.95–9.82)). Specifically, for diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), there was no significant difference in HBsAg status between the germinal centre B (GCB) and non-GCB subtypes. Additionally, our meta-analysis showed in a random effects model, HBV-infected individuals had a pooled OR of 2.09 (95% CI 1.76–2.50; P < 0.01) for NHL. Conclusions Chronic HBV infection was positively associated with B-NHL in China. However, acquired immunity by natural infection also increased B-NHL risk. Thus, we further speculated that regardless of whether HBsAg was cleared, the infected population had higher risk of B-NHL. Our study might expand our knowledge on tumorogenesis of NHL and thus provides clues for novel treatment strategies. Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic hepatitis B has been linked to lymphoma with contradictory results. AIM To investigate the association between chronic hepatitis B and lymphoma by using a nationwide population-based cohort. METHODS Records of patients diagnosed with chronic hepatitis B (hepatitis B virus [HBV] cohort) or without (non-HBV cohort) during 2004-2007 were retrieved from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Age, sex, comorbidities, and medical visits were matched using propensity scores between both cohorts, and they were followed up longitudinally until 2012 to determine any new lymphoma development. RESULTS A total of 203 031 patients were included in each cohort with a mean follow-up of 7-9 years. The lymphoma incidence rate was significantly higher in the HBV cohort than in the non-HBV cohort (29.4 vs 15.9 per 100 000 person-years, P < 0.0001). After adjustment for comorbidities and medical visits, HBV infection was found to be an independent risk factor associated with the development of lymphoma (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.07, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.76-2.43, P < 0.0001) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (HR: 2.18, 95% CI: 1.80-2.65, P < 0.0001); specifically with an increased risk of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (HR: 2.69, 95% CI: 2.05-3.52, P < 0.0001), other B-cell lymphoma (HR: 3.11, 95% CI: 1.89-5.11, P < 0.0001), and also for multiple myeloma (HR: 1.63, 95% CI: 1.10-2.42, P = 0.016). The association was significant even after excluding lymphoma development within the first year (HR: 2.08, 95% CI: 1.75-2.47, P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS Chronic hepatitis B is temporally associated with a 2-fold increased risk of lymphoma, particularly with B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and also an increased risk for multiple myeloma.

Abstract
Background With the purpose of elevating the risk of cholangiocarcinoma (CCA), alcoholic liver disease (ALD) was shown. Nonetheless, the findings were controversial. Herein, a meta-analysis and a systematic review were conducted to study the relation as mentioned above. Methods This study searched PubMed, EMBASE, and SI Web of Science carefully for the related studies published prior to March 2018, followed by the random-effects model to calculate the values of pooled risk ratio with 95% CIs. In addition, the analyses of sensitivity and subgroup were carried out to further confirm the stability of the outcomes. Results Seven articles, consisting of 413,483 healthy controls and 8,962 CCA patients, were included in this meta-analysis. When compared with normal controls, patients with ALD had an enhanced 3.92-fold CCA risk, with studies being heterogeneous (95% CI =1.96–5.07; OR =3.92; I2 =70.2%). However, subgroup analysis showed that ALD had the enhanced risk of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), instead of extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ECC) (ICC: 95% CI =3.06–5.92, OR =4.49; ECC: 95% CI =0.90–3.35, OR =2.12). Additionally, when the analysis was stratified by the geographic area, positive association was observed only in western countries rather than eastern countries (western nations: 95% CI =3.34–6.96, OR =5.15; eastern nations: 95% CI =0.38–3.91, OR =2.14). And no essential bias was published. Conclusion ALD was greatly associated with the enhanced risk of CCA by 3.92-fold, especially in the ICC.

Abstract
RATIONALE Colorectal liver metastasis develops in 50% of patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer, whereas concurrent intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) and colorectal liver metastases is extremely rare. PATIENT CONCERNS A 72-year-old man was referred to our hospital complaining of abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, and weakness over the last month. DIAGNOSES Colorectal liver metastases concurrent intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). INTERVENTIONS The patient was treated with mFOLFOX6 (5-fluorouracil 2400 mg/m, leucovorin 400 mg/m, and oxaliplatin 85 mg/m) plus bevacizumab 5 mg/kg every 2 weeks for 2 months. However, chemotherapy was not effective for the liver S3 lesion in our case. The possibility of ICC was considered based on the multidisciplinary team (MDT) mode, together with an anomalous increase in cancer antigen 19-9 and a history of hepatolithiasis. OUTCOMES Simultaneous resection of the colon cancer and liver tumors was performed at 6 weeks after discontinuing bevacizumab. Colorectal liver metastases concurrent ICC was confirmed by postoperative pathology. The patient's disease-free survival time is currently >14 months. LESSONS This is the first case report of the diagnosis and timely treatment of colorectal liver metastases harboring ICC. These results suggest that multiple primary tumors should be considered as a differential diagnosis when imaging or laboratory test results are abnormal.

Abstract
PURPOSE No prospective randomized trials have been conducted to date to evaluate the efficacy of palliation of pain or jaundice without treatment, definitive concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT), sequential chemotherapy and radiotherapy (CTRT), or chemotherapy (CT) alone for treating unresectable intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). We designed a nationwide, population-based, cohort study to determine the effects of different treatments on patients with unresectable ICC using propensity score matching (PSM) with the Mahalanobis metric. PATIENTS AND METHODS We classified patients with unresectable ICC from the Taiwan Cancer Registry database into the following 4 treatment groups: group 1, definitive CCRT; group 2, sequential CTRT; group 3, no treatment (palliative therapy for relief of pain, pruritus, or jaundice); and group 4, CT alone. Confounding factors among the 4 treatment groups were minimized through propensity score matching (PSM). RESULTS After PSM, the final cohort consisted of 844 patients (211 patients in each of the 4 groups). In both univariable and multivariable Cox regression analyses, adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs; 95% confidence interval [CI]) derived for groups 1 and 2 compared with group 4 were 0.65 (0.59-0.71) and 0.95 (0.83-1.48), respectively. Furthermore, an aHR (95% CI) of 2.25 (1.89-2.67) was derived for significant independent prognostic risk factors for poor overall survival for group 3 compared with group 4. CONCLUSIONS Definitive CCRT is the optimal therapy for patients with unresectable ICC without distant metastasis.

Abstract
Previous studies have focused on the relationship between hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). However, the results remain inconsistent and somehow conflicting in different subgroups. The aim of this study was to combine the findings of independent studies to comprehensively assess the association between HBV and NHL using a meta-analysis. Relevant studies were identified through structured keyword searches in PubMed, EMBASE and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database, and 58 studies with a total of 53 714 NHL cases and 1 778 591 controls were finally included. Pooled estimates indicated a significantly increased NHL risk in HBV-infected individuals (summary odds ratio [sOR]: 2.50; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.20-2.83) regardless of the study design (case-control studies: sOR: 2.47; 95% CI: 2.16-2.82; cohort studies: sOR: 2.64; 95% CI: 1.78-3.91). Considerable heterogeneity was observed across studies that was primarily attributed to the NHL subtypes (meta-regression: P < .05). Overall, B-cell NHL (sOR: 2.46; 95% CI: 1.97-3.07) presented a stronger association with HBV infection than T-cell NHL (sOR: 1.67; 95% CI: 1.34-2.10). Within the B-cell NHL subtypes, HBV infection was significantly associated with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL, sOR: 2.06; 95% CI: 1.48-2.88) and follicular lymphoma (FL, sOR: 1.54; 95% CI: 1.11-2.12), but not with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL) and Burkitt lymphoma. The results of this meta-analysis support a positive link between HBV infection and NHL development. Further investigations for the mechanisms underlying HBV-induced NHL are warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Chronic infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) increases risk of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), but it is not clear whether antiviral therapy reduces risk. We investigated the association between nucleos(t)ide analogue therapy and ICC risk. METHODS We performed a nationwide long-term cohort study using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database to obtain data on 185,843 patients with chronic HBV infection from October 1, 2003 through December 31, 2012. We excluded patients with confounding disorders such as infection with hepatitis C virus, HIV, or other hepatitis-associated viruses; liver flukes; biliary stone diseases; cholangitis; congenital biliary anomalies; biliary tract surgeries; or cancer. We identified 10,062 patients who received nucleos(t)ide analogue therapy (the treated group), and used propensity scores to match them (1:1) with patients who received hepatoprotectants (the untreated group). Cumulative incidences of and hazard ratios (HRs) for ICC development were analyzed. RESULTS The cumulative incidence of ICC was significantly lower in the treated group after 3 years of therapy (1.28%; 95% CI, 0.56-2.01) than in the untreated group (3.14%; 95% CI, 2.02-4.27) and after 5 years of therapy (1.53%; 95% CI, 0.73-2.33 vs 4.32% in untreated group; 95% CI, 2.96-5.6869). In multivariable regression analysis, nucleos(t)ide analogue therapy was independently associated with a reduced risk of ICC (HR, 0.44; 95% CI, 0.25-0.78; P = .005). Older age (HR 1.05 per year; 95% CI, 1.03-1.07) and cirrhosis (HR, 2.80; 95% CI, 1.52-5.1415) were independently associated with an increased risk of ICC. Sensitivity analyses verified the association between nucleos(t)ide analogue therapy and a reduced ICC risk. CONCLUSION A nationwide long-term cohort study in Taiwan showed that nucleos(t)ide analogue therapy for chronic HBV infection is significantly associated with a reduced ICC risk.

Abstract
Background Prior epidemiological evidences suggest that hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is linked to cancers other than hepatocellular carcinoma. This prospective hospital registry-based case-control study aimed to investigate the sero-epidemiological association between chronic HBV infection and various types of cancer. Methods 95,034 patients with first-diagnosed non-hepatocellular malignancy in a tertiary hospital between 2007 and 2014; and 118,891 non-cancer individuals as controls from a health promotion center were included. Cases and controls were compared for HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) positivity by conditional regression with adjustment for age, hypertension, diabetes, body mass index, alcohol consumption, smoking status and cholesterol level in both genders. Results An analysis of matched data indicated significant associations of HBV infection with lymphoma (adjusted odds ratio[AOR] 1.53 [95% CI 1.12–2.09] in men and 3.04 [1.92–4.82] in women) and biliary cancer (2.59[1.98–3.39] in men and 1.71[1.16–2.51] in women). Cervical (1.49[1.11–2.00]), uterine (1.69[1.09–2.61]), breast (1.16[1.02–1.32]), thyroid (1.49[1.28–1.74]), and lung cancers (1.79[1.32–2.44]) in women; and skin cancer (5.33[1.55–18.30]) in men were also significantly related to HBV infection. Conclusions Chronic HBV infection is associated with several malignant disorders including lymphoma, and biliary, cervical, uterine, breast, thyroid, lung, and skin cancers. Our findings may offer additional insights into the development of these neoplasms and may suggest the need to consider HBV screening in cancer patients and cancer surveillance in HBV-infected subjects.

Abstract
A 49-year-old woman who was asymptomatic was found to have a small liver tumor on abdominal ultrasonography (US) at her annual health checkup. US revealed a hypoechoic, solid, mass measuring 17-mm in size in segment 6. The tumor markers associated with liver malignancy were negative. An infectious disease screen was negative for hepatitis B surface antigen, but positive for antibody to hepatitis B core antigen. Imaging studies using computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and CT angiography suggested a malignant liver tumor, such as hepatocellular carcinoma. Partial hepatic resection of the posterior segment was performed. The pathological diagnosis was pseudolymphoma of the liver.

Abstract
Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is the cancer of the intrahepatic bile ducts, and together with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), constitute the majority of primary liver cancers. ICC is a rare disorder as its overall incidence is < 1/100,000 in the United States and Europe. However, it shows much higher incidence in particular geographical regions, such as northeastern Thailand, where liver fluke infection is the most common risk factor of ICC. Since the early stages of ICC are often asymptomatic, the patients are usually diagnosed at advanced stages with no effective treatments available, leading to the high mortality rate. In addition, unclear genetic mechanisms, heterogeneous nature, and various etiologies complicate the development of new efficient treatments. Recently, a number of studies have employed high-throughput approaches, including next-generation sequencing and mass spectrometry, in order to understand ICC in different biological aspects. In general, the majority of recurrent genetic alterations identified in ICC are enriched in known tumor suppressor genes and oncogenes, such as mutations in TP53, KRAS, BAP1, ARID1A, IDH1, IDH2, and novel FGFR2 fusion genes. Yet, there are no major driver genes with immediate clinical solutions characterized. Interestingly, recent studies utilized multi-omics data to classify ICC into two main subgroups, one with immune response genes as the main driving factor, while another is enriched with driver mutations in the genes associated with epigenetic regulations, such as IDH1 and IDH2. The two subgroups also show different hypermethylation patterns in the promoter regions. Additionally, the immune response induced by host-pathogen interactions, i.e., liver fluke infection, may further stimulate tumor growth through alterations of the tumor microenvironment. For in-depth functional studies, although many ICC cell lines have been globally established, these homogeneous cell lines may not fully explain the highly heterogeneous genetic contents of this disorder. Therefore, the advent of patient-derived xenograft and 3D patient-derived organoids as new disease models together with the understanding of evolution and genetic alterations of tumor cells at the single-cell resolution will likely become the main focus to fill the current translational research gaps of ICC in the future.

Abstract
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has been documented as a risk factor for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL). However, there are few large cohort studies, and there is no report about the impact of HBV vaccination. We conducted this study to evaluate these issues. We used the nationwide cohort of the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database for 1997-2013. We compared the incidence and the risk of developing NHL and CD20+ aggressive lymphoma between HBV and non-HBV cohorts. The hazard ratios (HRs) were computed using Cox proportional hazards models. We matched these two large cohorts to reconfirm the data. We also compared the incidence of NHL between cohorts born before and after the inception of universal HBV vaccination. We found that HBV infection increased the risk for developing NHL and CD20+ aggressive lymphoma, with HRs of 4.14 and 5.52, with a higher incidence of 17.07 and 13.9 per 100 000 person-years, respectively, compared to the non-HBV cohort. The incidence of NHL in the cohort born in the era before universal HBV vaccination was higher with 1.85 per 100 000 person-years compared to 0.74 in the cohort born later aged younger than 20. Our study confirms that HBV confers a greater risk for developing NHL, especially CD20+ aggressive lymphoma. The impact of HBV vaccination is protective against lymphoma development in the teenagers in an endemic area, but longer follow-up is needed for older age.

Several studies have shown that hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection may be associated with increased risk of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma; however, because of the rarity of ENKTL, little is known about its association with HBV. Our study aimed to assess whether HBV infection was associated with increased odds of ENKTL. We conducted a hospital-based case-control study including 417 ENKTL cases and 488 age- and sex-matched subjects with nonmalignant diseases unrelated to HBV infection. Multivariable unconditional logistic regression analyses were performed to estimate adjusted odds ratios [AOR] and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI). The results of the multivariable analysis showed that after adjustment for a set of known risk factors, patients previously infected with HBV (HBsAg-seronegative/anti-HBc-seropositive) and naturally immune to HBV (anti-HBs-seropositive/anti-HBc-seropositive) were at significantly greater odds of being diagnosed with ENKTL (AOR, 1.497; 95% CI 1.098-2.042, P=0.033 and AOR, 1.871; 95% CI 1.302-2.689, P=0.001, respectively). After adjusting for other factors, significantly greater odds of being diagnosed with ENKTL were observed among cases who reported ever drinking alcohol (AOR, 1.675; 95% CI 1.054-2.660, P=0.029). The odds of ENKTL diagnosis were not significantly associated with ABO blood type, cigarette smoking status or family history of cancer. The results of our study suggest that patients previously infected with HBV and naturally immune to HBV were at greater odds of being diagnosed with ENKTL.

Abstract
Objective The purpose of this study was to determine the association between PD1 expression and the clinical prognosis of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) co-occurring with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Methods A total of 165 patients presented with newly diagnosed and untreated DLBCL at the First Hospital of Jilin University, Changchun, China, between 2011.01 and 2014.12. Complete clinical information was available for 152 of these 165 patients. We retrospectively reviewed the results of HBV serum marker assays and the clinical information of these 152 DLBCL patients from our hospital database; eventually, only 51 patients were enrolled in this study, and these 51 patients received the PD1 test item. Results ① The incidence of HBsAg prevalence was 13.2% (20/152) in this study; ② The incidence of PD1 expression in the HBsAg+ group was 4.3-fold higher than that in the HBsAg—group (40.0% vs 9.4%; P = 0.010); ③ The clinical information, including sex, age, clinical stage, IPI, molecular subtype and chemotherapy status, was analyzed between the HBsAg+ and HBsAg—groups, but there were no significant differences between the two groups; ④ The median OS and PFS of the patients in the HBsAg+ group were 36.5 months and 12 months, respectively; however, the median OS and PFS of patients in the HBsAg—group were not reached (P = 0.033) and 32 months (P = 0.049), respectively; and ⑤ The median OS and PFS of PD1-positive patients in the HBsAg+ group were the worst (24 months and 9 months, respectively), whereas the median OS and PFS of PD1-negative patients in the HBsAg—group were the best (not reached and 32 months, respectively). Conclusions Compared with patients in the HBsAg—group, the incidence of PD1 expression was significantly higher in the HBsAg+ group, and the median OS and PFS times were the worst in PD1-positive patients in the HBsAg+ group. These results indicated that the dismal prognosis of patients with HBsAg+ may be related to the high rate of PD1 expression. Thus, a targeted PD1 treatment strategy may improve the prognosis of HBsAg+ DLBCL patients.

Abstract
Several non-hepatocellular cancers were linked with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. This study was aimed to quantify the potential associations between HBV infection and multiple non-hepatocellular cancers. Continuous cases, including 5,715 non-cancer and 40,963 cancer cases diagnosed from 2008 to 2014 in Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center were analyzed. HBV DNA and hepatitis B core antigen (HBcAg) were examed in gastric cancer tissues by polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemical staining. After adjusting for age, sex, year of diagnosis, smoking, drinking and family history of cancer, significant associations were found between serum HBsAg and frequently reported HBV-related non-hepatocellular cancers, including non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, cholangiocarcinoma and pancreatic cancer [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) and 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.89 (1.65-2.16)], as well as total other non-hepatocellular cancers [AOR and 95% CI: 1.12 (1.03-1.22)]. The median ages at diagnosis, all-cause death and cancer-specific death of serum HBsAg positive cancer patients were all significantly younger than those with serum HBsAg negative. HBV DNA was detected in 12.4% (34/275) gastric cancer tissues and HBcAg was most commonly detected in lymphocytes. This was the first report that HBV infection had a modest but significant nonspecific association with total non-hepatocellular cancers. Median age at diagnosis and death was significantly younger in serum HBsAg positive cancer patients. The underlying mechanism needs further investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We experience many cases of liver metastasis from colorectal cancer, but synchronous occurrence of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) and liver metastasis from a rectal cancer is extremely rare. We herein report a case of ICC coinciding with a liver metastasis from a known rectal carcinoma. CASE PRESENTATION A 68-year-old man was referred to our hospital for investigation of multiple liver tumors. Total colonoscopy and computed tomography (CT) revealed a rectal carcinoma, coinciding with liver metastasis. He was planned to receive chemotherapy following rectal resection. During chemotherapy for the rectal cancer, one of the liver tumors gradually grew after first shrinking. The following hepatectomy revealed the presence of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC). Despite intensive chemotherapy for the ICC, he passed away 6 months after the hepatectomy. CONCLUSIONS We should also suspect the possibility of multiple primary cancers, even if the patient has a history of cancer that is likely to cause metastatic lesions. When simultaneous neoplasms are diagnosed, systematic treatment should be targeted to the tumor with the worst prognosis.

Abstract
Background Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) are the major causes of chronic hepatitis infection (CHI). This longitudinal cohort study investigated the association of CHI with hepatic and extrahepatic cancer development in Taiwan. Methods Patients with HBV infection and HCV infection were identified from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. A Cox proportional hazard model was used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) for determining the association between CHI and cancer development. Results The patients with HBV infection exhibited an increased risk of colorectal cancer (HR: 1.36, 95 % CI: 1.09–1.70), liver cancer (HR: 21.47, 95 % CI: 18.0–25.6), gallbladder and extrahepatic bile duct cancer (HR: 2.05, 95 % CI: 1.07–3.91), pancreatic cancer (HR: 2.61, 95 % CI: 1.47–4.61), kidney cancer (HR: 1.72, 95 % CI: 1.10–2.68), ovarian cancer (HR: 2.31, 95 % CI: 1.21–4.39), and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HR: 2.10, 95 % CI: 1.25–3.52). The patients with HCV infection exhibited an increased risk of liver cancer (HR: 25.10, 95 % CI: 20.9–30.2), gallbladder and extrahepatic bile duct cancer (HR: 2.60, 95 % CI: 1.42–4.73), ovarian cancer (HR: 5.15, 95 % CI: 1.98–13.4), and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (HR: 2.30, 95 % CI: 1.34–3.96). Conclusion The present population-based study revealed that in addition to its association with primary liver cancer, CHI is associated with an increased risk of extrahepatic cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatitis B virus (HBV)-associated intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) was reported to have a favourable prognosis. We investigated the clinicopathological features of patients with HBV-associated ICC and compared post-resection survival outcomes of ICC patients with and without hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) to assess the prognostic impact of HBV infection. METHODS A single-institution cohort of 292 patients who underwent macroscopic curative resection for ICC were divided into HBV (n = 37) and non-HBV (n = 255) groups. Their medical records were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS In comparison with the clinicopathological features, patient age, proportion of anatomical resection, perineural invasion and lymph node (LN) metastasis were different between the two groups. Antiviral therapy was administered to 15 (40.5%) and 27 (73.0%) patients before and after surgery, respectively. Univariate analyses revealed that risk factors were tumour size >5 cm, anatomical resection, perineural invasion, lymphovascular invasion and LN metastasis for tumour recurrence and HBV infection, tumour size >5 cm, anatomical resection, perineural invasion, lymphovascular invasion and LN metastasis for patient survival. Multivariate analysis revealed that independent risk factors were tumour size >5 cm, perineural invasion and LN metastasis for both tumour recurrence and patient survival. HBV infection showed statistically marginal significances only in univariate analysis, thus not being an independent risk factor. CONCLUSIONS We observed that ICC patients with HBV infection often showed favourable tumour features probably due to early diagnosis, but their post-resection outcomes were not significantly different from those of patients without HBV infection. Therefore, the same treatment and surveillance policies should be applied regardless of HBV serology.

Hepatitis B virus-associated diffuse large B-cell lymphoma: unique clinical features, poor outcome, and hepatitis B surface antigen-driven origin. Oncotarget 2016; 6:25061-73. Abstract
While the epidemiologic association between hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is established, little is known more than this epidemiologic evidence. We studied a cohort of 587 patients with DLBCL for HBV infection status, clinicopathologic features, and the immunoglobulin variable region in HBV surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive patients. Eighty-one (81/587, 13.8%) patients were HBsAg-positive. Compared with HBsAg-negative DLBCL, HBsAg-positive DLBCL displayed a younger median onset age (45 vs. 55 years), more frequent involvement of spleen or retroperitoneal lymph node (40.7% vs. 16.0% and 61.7% vs. 31.0% respectively, both p < 0.001), more advanced disease (stage III/IV: 76.5% vs 59.5%, p = 0.003), and significantly worse outcome (2-year overall survival: 47% versus 70%, p < 0.001). In HBsAg-positive DLBCL patients, almost all (45/47, 96%) amino acid sequences of heavy and light chain complementarity determining region 3 exhibited a high homology to antibodies specific for HBsAg, and the majority (45/50, 90%) of IgHV and IgLV genes were mutated. We conclude that 13.8% of DLBCL cases are HBV-associated in HBV-endemic China and show unique clinical features and poor outcomes. Furthermore, our study strongly suggests that HBV-associated DLBCL might arise from HBV antigen-selected B cells.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hepatitis B virus (HBV) has been associated with the development of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and can be reactivated in patients being treated for NHL. METHODS Articles published between 2000 and 2015 that discussed an association between NHL and HBV, mechanisms of HBV induction of NHL, and HBV reactivation in patients with NHL were reviewed and the results compiled to help health care professionals better understand the risk of developing NHL in HBV-seropositive individuals, describe potential etiologies by which HBV infection may lead to lymphomagenesis, and highlight the recent medical literature with respect to the reactivation of HBV in the setting of NHL. RESULTS An association exists between HBV infection and NHL development. Immunosuppression due to HBV, chronic viral stimulation, and dysregulation of the immune system are possible ways in which lymphoma can develop in patients with HBV infection. All patients being treated with anti-CD20 antibodies or those from or living in HBV-endemic regions should be tested for hepatitis B surface antigen, core antibody, and surface antibody prior to initiating therapy. HBV DNA polymerase chain reaction (PCR) may also be useful in certain cases. Among HBV-seropositive patients or those with detectable HBV DNA, prophylaxis with an antiviral agent should be initiated for 1 year after NHL therapy. HBV DNA PCR monitoring should be undertaken each month during the course of treatment and every 3 months after treatment for a 1-year duration. CONCLUSIONS Health care professionals should become more comfortable treating these high-risk patients with NHL as they become more informed about potential lymphomagenesis and the reactivation of HBV.

Abstract
There is a low incidence of multiple primary cancer, particularly when the cancer is synchronous. The present report presents a case of synchronous double primary malignancies. A 58-year-old woman was admitted to Ling Nan Hospital (Guangzhou, China) complaining of pain in the left hip. X-ray revealed an osteolytic lesion and further examination indicated the presence of double primary cancer, consisting of hepatic cholangiocarcinoma and thyroid carcinoma. Biopsy of the osteolytic lesion showed a metastatic adenocarcinoma of unknown origin. Subsequently, final diagnosis was confirmed by I-131 scan and liver lesion biopsy. The patient received positive multidisciplinary treatments and survived for 9 months following diagnosis. The results of the present case suggest that multiplicity of primary malignancy is not necessarily an indicator of poor prognosis, as long as effective diagnosis and adequate disease management are achieved.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Whether or not hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection plays a role in the development of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is largely unknown. Our study aimed to assess the association between HBV infection and the risk of NPC in Southern China. METHODS We conducted a case-control study including 711 NPC cases and two groups of controls. The first control group consisted of 656 individuals with other benign tumors unrelated to HBV infection and the second group consisted of 680 healthy population controls. Multivariable ORs and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI) for NPC were estimated by logistic regression. RESULTS Patients with NPC had higher prevalence of antibodies against hepatitis B core antigen-positive [anti-HBc-(+); 47.26%] compared with either benign tumor controls (39.33%; P < 0.01) or healthy controls (41.18%; P = 0.04). In multivariable models adjusting for a set of risk factors for NPC, anti-HBc-(+) was significantly associated with a higher risk of NPC [adjusted OR (AOR), 1.40; 95% CI, 1.12-1.74 compared with the benign tumor controls and AOR, 1.48; 95% CI, 1.05-2.08 compared with the healthy controls]. The association was not modified by hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) status. Finally, compared with the healthy controls, individuals with both anti-HBc-(+) and EBV antibodies had largely increased risk of NPC (AOR, 141.82; 95% CI, 68.73-292.62). CONCLUSION Our study suggests that HBV infection is associated with NPC risk in Southern China. IMPACT Prevention for HBV infection may play a role in the development of NPC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There has recently been increased interest in cancer incidence in electronics workers. AIMS To determine the cancer incidence ratio in electronics workers and the potential factors affecting the risk for development of cancer. METHODS Epidemiological study performed in electronics workers who were employed between 1999 and 2008 in South Korea. Cancer incidence ratio was analysed with respect to departments, divisions, job titles, gender, age, hepatitis B and C virus infection and work duration. We compared the incidence of haematological cancer in this cohort with that expected in the general population. RESULTS The study population was 56283. Overall, the standardized incidence ratio (SIR) for haematological cancer was 0.85. In particular, the SIR for leukaemia was 0.86 and for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) was 0.93, which were not statistically significant. The SIR for NHL was significantly increased [SIR 5.23, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.31-20.95] in female office workers. We also found that the SIR for NHL was significantly increased in female workers who tested positive for hepatitis virus infection (SIR 7.69, 95% CI 1.08-54.60). CONCLUSIONS The raised SIR for NHL among female workers was due to potential risk factors such as hepatitis virus infection although additional research and an ongoing, long-term, prospective epidemiological cohort study is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have assessed the association between hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. However, few studies are cohort by design, conducted within the Asian context and even fewer studies consider other lymphoid malignancies. The aim of this study was to assess the association between HBV and HCV and the risk of lymphoid malignancies among Japanese adults. MATERIALS AND METHODS The Japan Public Health Center prospective-based Study Cohort II was initiated in 1993/1994. 20,360 subjects with available data on HBV and HCV infection status from blood samples were followed up until the end of 2010 for an average of 16 years. During 324,139 person-years, 120 newly diagnosed cases of lymphoid malignancies were identified. Cox proportional hazards models were employed to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs). RESULTS Of 20,360 subjects, 508 were HBsAg positive, 11,035 were anti-HBc positive, and 1,129 subjects were anti-HCV positive at baseline. The presence of HBsAg was positively associated with malignant lymphoma, especially with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (HR=3.56, 95%CI=1.37-9.18) and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (HR=7.22, 95%CI=2.34-22.29). In contrast, no clear association was observed between the presence of anti-HBc and anti-HCV. CONCLUSION In conclusion, HBsAg but not anti-HBc or anti-HCV was positively associated with malignant lymphoma, particularly non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma in Japanese adults.
