Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), consisting of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, mainly affects the gastrointestinal tract but is also known to have extraintestinal manifestations because of long-standing systemic inflammation. Several national cohort studies have found that IBD is an independent risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disorders. However, the molecular mechanisms by which IBD impairs the cardiovascular system are not fully understood. Although the gut-heart axis is attracting more attention in recent years, our knowledge of the organ-to-organ communication between the gut and the heart remains limited. In patients with IBD, upregulated inflammatory factors, altered microRNAs and lipid profiles, as well as dysbiotic gut microbiota, may induce adverse cardiac remodeling. In addition, patients with IBD have a three- to four times higher risk of developing thrombosis than people without IBD, and it is believed that the increased risk of thrombosis is largely due to increased procoagulant factors, platelet count/activity, and fibrinogen concentration, in addition to decreased anticoagulant factors. The predisposing factors for atherosclerosis are present in IBD and the possible mechanisms may involve oxidative stress system, overexpression of matrix metalloproteinases, and changes in vascular smooth muscle phenotype. This review focuses mainly on 1) the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases associated with IBD, 2) the potential pathogenic mechanisms of cardiovascular diseases in patients with IBD, and 3) adverse effects of IBD drugs on the cardiovascular system. Also, we introduce here a new paradigm for the gut-heart axis that includes exosomal microRNA and the gut microbiota as a cause for cardiac remodeling and fibrosis.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) consist of a group of chronic inflammatory disorders with a complex etiology, which represent a clinical challenge due to their often therapy-refractory nature. In IBD, inflammation of the intestinal mucosa is characterized by strong and sustained leukocyte infiltration, resulting in the loss of epithelial barrier function and subsequent tissue destruction. This is accompanied by the activation and the massive remodeling of mucosal micro-vessels. The role of the gut vasculature in the induction and perpetuation of mucosal inflammation is receiving increasing recognition. While the vascular barrier is considered to offer protection against bacterial translocation and sepsis after the breakdown of the epithelial barrier, endothelium activation and angiogenesis are thought to promote inflammation. The present review examines the respective pathological contributions of the different phenotypical changes observed in the microvascular endothelium during IBD, and provides an overview of potential vessel-specific targeted therapy options for the treatment of IBD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To evaluate for increased rectal bleeding following enoxaparin thromboprophylaxis in children hospitalized for ulcerative colitis (UC). METHODS Retrospective cohort study (2007--2016) of 218 inpatients with active UC. Patients receiving enoxaparin were compared with a nonenoxaparin-treated patient group. Severity of UC was determined using the Pediatric Ulcerative Colitis Activity Index (PUCAI). Hemoglobin (Hb) values and packed red blood cell (pRBC) transfusions were reviewed for a 7-day period following hospital admission. A linear mixed effect model was used to compare change in Hb values between the groups. Risk of pRBC transfusion was compared using a log-rank test and Cox proportional hazard regression. A sub-analysis was also conducted restricting to patients with severe UC to provide more generalizable insight into safety profile of enoxaparin. RESULTS Children hospitalized for UC and receiving enoxaparin were more likely to have severe disease, received infliximab therapy and be admitted after 2010. Use of enoxaparin showed there was not a difference (P = 0.60) in the fall of Hb detected among those with acute severe colitis (initial PUCAI ≥65) during the week following admission. Moreover, there was no difference in the risk of requiring a pRBC transfusion with enoxaparin use (log-rank test all patients: P = 0.80; severe UC: P = 0.88; Cox proportional hazard regression all patients: P = 0.72; severe UC: 0.85). CONCLUSIONS There was no difference in Hb levels or need for blood transfusions in children hospitalized for severe UC (PUCAI ≥65) whether or not they received enoxaparin for thromboembolism prophylaxis.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of morbidity and mortality despite aggressive treatment of traditional risk factors. Chronic inflammation plays an important role in the initiation and progression of CVDs. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a systemic state of inflammation exhibiting increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines including tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1β, and IL-6. Importantly, IBD is associated with increased risk for CVDs especially in women and young adults, including coronary artery disease, stroke, thromboembolic diseases, and arrhythmias. Potential mechanisms underlying the increased risk for CVDs in IBD patients include increased levels of inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress, altered platelet function, hypercoagulability, decreased numbers of circulating endothelial progenitor cells, endothelial dysfunction, and possible interruption of gut microbiota. Although IBD does not appear to exacerbate the traditional risk factors for CVDs, including hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, diabetes mellitus, and obesity, aggressive risk stratifications are important for primary and secondary prevention of CVDs for IBD patients. Compared to 5-aminosalicylates and corticosteroids, anti-TNF-α therapy in IBD patients was consistently associated with decreasing cardiovascular events. In the absence of contraindications, low-dose aspirin and statins appear to be beneficial for IBD patients. Low-molecular-weight heparin is also recommended for patients who are hospitalized with acute IBD flares without major bleeding risk. A multidisciplinary team approach should be considered for the management of IBD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) exacerbation requiring hospitalization increases the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), and current guidelines recommend pharmacologic VTE prophylaxis (PVTEP). AIMS Bleeding risks with PVTEP in this population are poorly defined, and no study has investigated packed red blood cell (PRBC) transfusion requirements in this population. METHODS We conducted a chart review of all adult hospitalizations for IBD exacerbation within the Northwell Healthcare system. Patient characteristics recorded included demographics, disease type ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, severe disease defined by inpatient corticosteroid or biologic use, and admission hemoglobin. Inpatient use of PVTEP and anti-platelet therapies were identified. The primary outcome was the occurrence of any packed red blood cell (PRBC) transfusion. RESULTS In total, 717 patients met inclusion criteria, accounting for 891 admissions. PVTEP was used during 60.4% of admissions, and 11.1% of patient admissions included a transfusion event. Severe disease patients receiving PVTEP had an 18.6% transfusion risk, versus 11.1% for those not receiving PVTEP, OR 1.82, CI (1.04-3.17). One multivariable analysis transfusion was associated with PVTEP, OR 2.11, 95% CI 1.18, 3.77, p = 0.0120, disease severity OR 3.17, 95% CI 1.81,5.54, p < 0.0001, anti-platelet therapies OR 2.46, 95% CI 1.23-4.90, p = 0.0107, bowel resection OR 3.88, 95% CI 1.97,7.63, p < 0.0001 and decreased admission hemoglobin OR 2.01, 95% CI 1.73-2.32, p < 0.0001, but not disease type ulcerative colitis OR 0.71, 95% CI 0.42-1.20. CONCLUSION PVTEP during IBD exacerbation is associated with increased PRBC transfusions. Our findings do not constitute a contraindication to PVTEP, but may be incorporated into patient counseling during inpatient IBD management.

Abstract
Ulcerative colitis has hypercoagulable state and high risk of thrombosis; so mucosal disturbance of microcirculation may be mediate and amplify the inflammation of ulcerative colitis. A 56-year-old female patient was admitted in hospital for discontinuously mucous bloody stool for more than 1 year. Ulcerative colitis was determined after colonoscopy and pathologic examination. Mesalazine was effective during the year, but her symptoms recurred three times due to her bad compliance. One month before admission, the patient had severe recurrence after mesalazine withdrawal. At this time, the result of quantitative fluorescence PCR of colonic histic CMV-DNA was 1.6 × 104 copies/mL positive, CMV colitis was accompanied. After 4 weeks of ganciclovir and 6 weeks of mesalazine usage and nutrition support, the symptoms of diarrhea and abdominal cramp did not improve; stool frequency was more than twenty times a day. Probe-based confocal laser endomicroscopy revealed local microcirculation disturbance. Papaverine 90-mg slow drip for at least 10 h a day was added. The symptoms dramatically disappeared after 3 days of papaverine treatment. The patient had yellow mushy stool 2–3 times a day. Pathological findings showed diffuse submucosal hemorrhage and transparent thrombosis in capillaries. Treatment of microcirculatory disturbance in severe UC is a promising adjuvant therapy. Confocal laser endomicroscopy may be an effective method for microcirculation judgment.

Abstract
Heparin mimetics are synthetic and semi-synthetic compounds that are highly sulfated, structurally distinct analogues of glycosaminoglycans. These mimetics are often rationally designed to increase potency and binding selectivity towards specific proteins involved in disease manifestations. Some of the major therapeutic arenas towards which heparin mimetics are targeted include: coagulation and thrombosis, cancers, and inflammatory diseases. Although Fondaparinux, a rationally designed heparin mimetic, is now approved for prophylaxis and treatment of venous thromboembolism, the search for novel anticoagulant heparin mimetics with increased affinity and fewer side effects remains a subject of research. However, increasingly, research is focusing on the non-anticoagulant activities of these molecules. Heparin mimetics have potential as anti-cancer agents due to their ability to: (1) inhibit heparanase, an endoglycosidase which facilitates the spread of tumor cells; and (2) inhibit angiogenesis by binding to growth factors. The heparin mimetic, PI-88 is in clinical trials for post-surgical hepatocellular carcinoma and advanced melanoma. The anti-inflammatory properties of heparin mimetics have primarily been attributed to their ability to interact with: complement system proteins, selectins and chemokines; each of which function differently to facilitate inflammation. The efficacy of low/non-anticoagulant heparin mimetics in animal models of different inflammatory diseases has been demonstrated. These findings, plus clinical data that indicates heparin has anti-inflammatory activity, will raise the momentum for developing heparin mimetics as a new class of therapeutic agent for inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
Protein losing enteropathy (PLE) has been associated with more than 60 different conditions, including nearly all gastrointestinal diseases (Crohn’s disease, celiac, Whipple’s, intestinal infections, and so on) and a large number of non-gut conditions (cardiac and liver disease, lupus, sarcoidosis, and so on). This review presents the first attempt to quantitatively understand the magnitude of the PLE in relation to the associated pathology for three different disease categories: 1) increased lymphatic pressure (e.g., lymphangiectasis); 2) diseases with mucosal erosions (e.g., Crohn’s disease); and 3) diseases without mucosal erosions (e.g., celiac disease). The PLE with lymphangiectasis results from rupture of the mucosal lymphatics, with retrograde drainage of systemic lymph into the intestinal lumen with the resultant loss of CD4 T cells, which is diagnostic. Mucosal erosion PLE results from macroscopic breakdown of the mucosal barrier, with the epithelial capillaries becoming the rate-limiting factor in albumin loss. The equation derived to describe the relationship between the reduction in serum albumin (CP) and PLE indicates that gastrointestinal albumin clearance must increase by at least 17 times normal to reduce the CP by half. The strengths and limitations of the two quantitative measures of PLE (51Cr-albumin or α1-antitrypsin [αAT] clearance) are reviewed. αAT provides a simple quantitative diagnostic test that is probably underused clinically. The strong, unexplained correlation between minor decreases in CP and subsequent mortality in seemingly healthy individuals raises the question of whether subclinical PLE could account for the decreased CP and, if so, could the mechanism responsible for PLE play a role in the increased mortality? A large-scale study correlating αAT clearance with serum albumin concentrations will be required in order to determine the role of PLE in the regulation of the serum albumin concentration of seemingly healthy subjects.

Abstract
Pharmacologic efforts to improve outcomes following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) remain disappointing, likely owing to the complex nature of post-hemorrhage brain injury. Previous work suggests that heparin, due to the multimodal nature of its actions, reduces the incidence of clinical vasospasm and delayed cerebral ischemia that accompany the disease. This narrative review examines how heparin may mitigate the non-vasospastic pathological aspects of aSAH, particularly those related to neuroinflammation. Following a brief review of early brain injury in aSAH and heparin’s general pharmacology, we discuss potential mechanistic roles of heparin therapy in treating post-aSAH inflammatory injury. These roles include reducing ischemia-reperfusion injury, preventing leukocyte extravasation, modulating phagocyte activation, countering oxidative stress, and correcting blood-brain barrier dysfunction. Following a discussion of evidence to support these mechanistic roles, we provide a brief discussion of potential complications of heparin usage in aSAH. Our review suggests that heparin’s use in aSAH is not only safe, but effectively addresses a number of pathologies initiated by aSAH.

Abstract
Low-molecular-weight heparins (LMWHs) endure as important drugs for thromboprophylaxis. Although clinical use relies on the subcutaneous (SC) route, our previous studies show that single-dose orally administered LMWHs have antithrombotic activity. Since thromboprophylaxis requires long-term treatment, we examined antithrombotic effects of subacute oral LMWHs in a rat venous thrombosis model and compared results to SC or single-dose oral administration. We measured LMWH in endothelium and plasma, weight change and complete blood counts (CBC). Oral LMWH tinzaparin (3 × 0.1 mg/kg/12 or 24 hours) or reviparin (3 × 0.025 mg/kg/24 hours) significantly decreased thrombosis compared to saline. In the subacute study (60 × 0.1 mg/kg/12 hours), oral or SC tinzaparin significantly reduced thrombosis compared to saline but not to single or 3 × 0.1 mg/kg/12 hours oral tinzaparin. Antithrombotic effects were similar between oral and SC administration. LMWH was found on endothelium following oral but not SC administration. Endothelial concentrations were significantly correlated with incidence of stable thrombi ( P = 0.021 and 0.04 for aortic and vena cava endothelium respectively, χ2 test) and total thrombi ( P = 0.003 for vena cava endothelium). Anti-Xa activity was significantly greater for oral or SC LMWH than saline and significantly greater for SC versus oral LMWH. Values for CBCs were within normal ranges (mean ± 2 SD). There was no evidence of bleeding. Weight gain was similar between groups. In conclusion, subacute oral and SC LMWH have similar antithrombotic effects. Antithrombotic activity with oral administration is correlated with endothelial LMWH concentrations but not with plasma anticoagulant activity.

Abstract
This study aimed to observe the therapeutic effects of magnesium lithospermate B on acute and chronic colitis induced by dextran sodiumsulfate (DSS) and the role of inflammasome complex (NOD-like receptor protein, NLRP; apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing, ASC; caspase-1). Establishment of acute and chronic colitis models were by using 5% DSS oral administration in BALB/C male mice. Magnesium lithospermate B (240 mg/kg body weight) was given by subcutaneous injection. Samples were collected for biomarker assay, histological examination, immunohistochemical evaluation and western blot. There was obvious increase in TNF-α level and NLPR3, ASC, and caspase-1 expressions in acute and chronic colitis groups compared with the normal control. Significant decrease of the tumor necrosis factor-α level and the expressions of NLPR3, ASC, and caspase-1 were observed after treatment with magnesium lithospermate B. This study showed that magnesium lithospermate B could be used to treat acute and chronic colitis by inhibiting the activation of the NLRP3/ASC/Caspase-1 pathway.

Abstract
Current drug therapies for ulcerative colitis (UC) are not completely effective in managing moderate-to-severe UC and approximately 20% of patients with severe UC require surgical interventions. Heparins, polydisperse mixtures of non-anticoagulant and anticoagulant oligosaccharides, are widely used as anticoagulants. However, heparins are also reported to have anti-inflammatory properties. Unfractionated heparin was initially used in patients with UC for the treatment of rectal microthrombi. Surprisingly, it was found to be effective in reducing UC-associated symptoms. Since then, several pre-clinical and clinical studies have reported promising outcomes of heparins in UC. In contrast, some controlled clinical trials demonstrated no or only limited benefits, thus the potential of heparins for the treatment of UC remains uncertain. This review discusses potential mechanisms of action of heparins, as well as proposed reasons for their contradictory clinical effectiveness in the treatment of UC.

Abstract
Thrombosis in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an increasingly noted extraintestinal manifestation with high morbidity and mortality. While controlling the activity of the disease with the appropriate therapy, thromboembolism prophylaxis should be applied to all patients. All common risk factors for thromboembolism are also valid for patients with IBD; however, it is clear that uncontrolled disease and hospitalization are major disease-specific risk factors for venous thromboembolism in patients with IBD. Pharmacological thromboprophylaxis with currently available anticoagulants does not increase the risk of further bleeding in patients with IBD with mild-to-moderate bleeding. In severe bleeding or with increased risk of further bleeding due to other comorbid conditions, thromboprophylaxy with mechanical methods should be the treatment option. Whether thrombosis is the cause or the result of intestinal inflammation remains to be elucidated, and other issues in the etiology, such as the role of intestinal flora in thrombosis pathogenesis, will be the subject of future studies.

Abstract
Sulfated glycans such as glycosaminoglycans on proteoglycans are key players in both molecular and cellular events of inflammation. They participate in leukocyte rolling along the endothelial surface of inflamed sites; chemokine regulation and its consequential functions in leukocyte guidance, migration and activation; leukocyte transendothelial migration; and structural assembly of the subendothelial basement membrane responsible to control tissue entry of cells. Due to these and other functions, exogenous sulfated glycans of various structures and origins can be used to interventionally down-regulate inflammation processes. In this review article, discussion is given primarily on the anti-inflammatory functions of mammalian heparins, heparan sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, dermatan sulfate and related compounds as well as the holothurian fucosylated chondroitin sulfate and the brown algal fucoidans. Understanding the underlying mechanisms of action of these sulfated glycans in inflammation, helps research programs involved in developing new carbohydrate-based drugs aimed to combat acute and chronic inflammatory disorders.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Approximately 300 million people worldwide are currently affected by asthma. Improvements in the understanding of the mechanisms involved in such inflammatory airway disorders has led to the recognition of new therapeutic approaches. Heparin, a widely used anticoagulant, has been shown to be beneficial in the management of asthma. It belongs to the family of highly sulphated polysaccharides referred to as glycosaminoglycans, containing a heterogeneous mixture of both anticoagulant and non-anticoagulant polysaccharides. Experimental findings have suggested that heparin has potential anti-asthmatic properties owing to the ability of its non-anticoagulant oligosaccharides to bind and modulate the activity of a wide range of biological molecules involved in the inflammatory process. AREAS COVERED This review focuses on the potential mechanisms of action and clinical application of heparin as an anti-inflammatory agent for the management of asthma. EXPERT OPINION Heparin may play a significant role in the management of asthma. However, these properties are often hindered by the presence of anticoagulant oligosaccharides, which possess a significant risk of bleeding. Therefore, its therapeutic potential must be explored using well-designed clinical studies that focus on identifying and isolating the anti-inflammatory oligosaccharides of heparin and further elucidating the structure and mechanisms of actions of these non-anticoagulant oligosaccharides.

Abstract
AIM We sought to investigate whether mammalian or ascidian Styela plicata heparin enemas could diminish inflammation in experimental diversion colitis. METHODS Wistar-specific pathogen-free rats were submitted to a Hartmann's end colostomy and treated with enemas containing mammalian or Styela plicata heparin, or saline. Enemas were administered 3 times a week in the excluded colon segment from 4 to 8 weeks after operation. The effect of treatment was evaluated using video-endoscopic and histologic scores, measuring the cytokines interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and transforming growth factor-β production in organ cultures by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, quantifying T cells and macrophages, and investigating nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) and external mitogen-activated protein kinase (pERK) activation. RESULTS Treatment with either mammalian or Styela plicata heparins decreased colonoscopic and histologic scores (P < .02) and restored the densities of collagen fibers and the number of goblet cells (P < .03) in the diverted colon. Both heparin treatments decreased the accumulation of T cells and macrophages (P < .03), and the activation of NF-κB and pERK (P < .04) in the diverted colon. The high levels of cytokines IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-6 from the diversion colitis explants decreased (P < .05) to near normal values with heparin treatments. CONCLUSION The improvement of experimental diversion colitis with heparin treatments indicates the anti-inflammatory effect of these compounds, even after topical administration. Further studies with the nonhemorrhagic heparin obtained from the invertebrate Styela plicata will be necessary to confirm its efficacy for the treatment of human diversion colitis and possibly other forms of colitis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Severe and acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with a high mortality. Since COPD is an airway inflammatory disease, and heparin has shown anti-inflammatory effects in previous studies, we evaluated the clinical effect of low molecular weight heparin (LMWH; nadroparin) in COPD patients admitted into the hospital due to acute exacerbations. METHODS Sixty-six patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) were randomly divided into control group (n = 33) and LMWH group (n = 33). The control group received conventional treatment, including oxygen therapy (non-invasive or conventional mechanical ventilation), anti-infection, atomization expectorant, spasmolysis, anti-asthmatics, and nutritional support. The LMWH group received the same treatment plus LMWH for 1 week. The levels of plasma C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, and fibrinogen were measured. The main outcomes were duration of mechanical ventilation, length of ICU stay, and hospital stay. RESULTS There were no significant differences between the groups with respect to demographics, severity of illness, and gas exchange variables. The levels of plasma C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, and fibrinogen were significantly decreased in the LMWH group. LMWH significantly reduced the mean duration of mechanical ventilation (6.6 days vs. 3.8 days; p < 0.01), the length of ICU stay (8.5 days vs. 5.6 days; p < 0.01) and hospital stay (14.3 days vs. 11.3 days; p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS The addition of LMWH to standard therapy benefits COPD patients with acute exacerbation.

Abstract
Awareness is increasing that risk of venous thromboembolism and development of atherosclerosis is elevated in patients with some chronic inflammatory diseases. This review aimed to examine the risk of vascular disease in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and to identify potential pathogenic mechanisms and therapeutic approaches. An extensive literature search was conducted using MEDLINE database, Cochrane Library and international conference abstracts for studies pertaining to venous and arterial thromboembolism in adult IBD patients. There is a 1.1-3.6 fold risk of venothromboembolism in IBD, affecting 0.55-6.15% of patients. Risks are increased during a flare or with chronically active inflammation. Evidence is building that there may be a modestly increased risk of arterial disease overall, despite evidence that traditional risk factors may be reduced. Multiple pathogenic factors have been identified including endothelial dysfunction, inflammation-mediated calcium deposition in the media of arteries, hyperhomocysteinemia, platelet activation, and altered coagulation and fibrinolysis. The key to active and preventive therapy is to effectively treat inflammation. Recommendations for prophylaxis of venothromboembolism have followed guidelines where they exist and have been extrapolated from studies of other at-risk conditions, as have those for arterial disease, where screening for risk factors and actively treating abnormalities is encouraged. In conclusion, patients with IBD are at considerably increased risk of venothromboembolism and probably of arterial disease, in particular mesenteric ischemia and ischemic heart disease. Increased penetration of gaps between this knowledge and clinical therapeutic action to prevent thromboembolic events into IBD clinical practice is needed.

Abstract
Heparan sulphate (HS) polysaccharides are covalently attached to the core proteins of various proteoglycans at cell surfaces and in the extracellular matrix. They are composed of alternating units of hexuronic acid and glucosamine, with sulphate substituents in complex and variable yet cell-specific patterns. Whereas HS is produced by virtually all cells in the body, heparin, a highly sulphated HS variant, is confined to connective-tissue-type mast cells. The polysaccharides interact with a multitude of proteins, mainly through ionic binding, and thereby control key processes in development and homoeostasis. Similar interactions also implicate HS in various pathophysiological settings, including cancer, amyloid diseases, infectious diseases, inflammatory conditions and some developmental disorders. Prospects for the development of HS-based drugs, which are still largely unrealized, are discussed.

Abstract
Increased ischemic stroke risk is observed in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Causes and physiopathological aspects of cerebral infarct, in this specific population, are less often described. There is little information to provide guidelines for the best curative and preventive treatment. We report 2 cases of ischemic strokes due to internal carotid thrombus in patients during active phase of IBD. Ulceration of early atherosclerotic plaques activated by a hypercoagulation state may cause a thrombus. A combined therapy with heparin and corticosteroids was used for both our patients. Lysis of the thrombus was obtained after several days without surgical treatment and shown by ultrasonography. These cases highlight an aetiology of stroke in patients with IBD and use of a synergic treatment to respond to hypercoagulability in link with IBD. Benefits and safety of this therapy should be confirmed with clinical studies.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel diseases are associated with an increased risk of vascular complications. The most important are arterial and venous thromboembolisms, which are considered as specific extraintestinal manifestations of inflammatory bowel diseases. Among venous thromboembolism events, portal vein thrombosis has been described in inflammatory bowel diseases. We report three cases of portal vein thrombosis occurring in patients with active inflammatory bowel disease. In two of them, hepatic abscess was present. Furthermore, we performed a systematic review based on the clinical literature published on this topic.
