Hydroxyapatite/collagen nanocomposite-coated titanium rod for achieving rapid osseointegration onto bone surface

Mechanical Characteristics and Bioactivity of Nanocomposite Hydroxyapatite/Collagen Coated Titanium for Bone Tissue Engineering

In the present study, we have analyzed the mechanical characteristics and bioactivity of titanium coating with hydroxyapatite/bovine collagen. Hydroxyapatite (HAp) was synthesized from a Pinctada maxima shell and has a stoichiometry (Ca/P) of 1.72 and a crystallinity of 92%, suitable for coating materials according to ISO and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards. Titanium (Ti) substrate coatings were fabricated at HAp concentrations of 1% (Ti/HAp-1) and 3% (Ti/HAp-3) and a bovine collagen concentration of 1% (Ti/HAp/Coll) by the electrophoresis deposition (EPD) method. The compressive strength of Ti/HAp-1 and Ti/HAp-3 was 87.28 and 86.19 MPa, respectively, and it increased significantly regarding the control/uncoated Ti (46.71 MPa). Furthermore, the Ti/HAp-coll (69.33 MPa) has lower compressive strength due to collagen substitution (1%). The bioactivity of Ti substrates after the immersion into simulated body fluids (SBF) for 3-10 days showed a high apatite growth (Ca²⁺ and PO43-), according to XRD, FTIR, and SEM-EDS results, significantly on the Ti/HAp-coll.

Preparation of chitosan-tannic acid coating and its anti-osteoclast and antibacterial activities in titanium implants

INTRODUCTION

Bacterial infection and aseptic loosening caused by bone resorption at the implant interface are major clinical complications during bone defect implantation surgery, and surface modification of the implant to address the aforementioned problems has long been a research focus.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

In this paper, a chitosan (CTS)-tannic acid (TA) colloid coating with a negative charge and excellent hydrophilicity was prepared on a Ti6Al4V (TC4) surface using a layer-by-layer assembly method. The physical properties, anti-osteoclast activity, and antimicrobial activity of the coatings were investigated.

RESULTS

The findings showed that when the pH value was 5 and the ratio of CTS:TA was 0.8, the carrying rate of TA was the best. Furthermore, the CTS-TA coating had no cytotoxicity on the morphology and proliferation of BMSCs cells and effectively inhibited the differentiation of RAW264.7 cells into osteoclasts and the proliferation of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. With the increase in the immersion time of TC4 in CTS-TA colloid solution, the inhibitory effects will also enhance.

CONCLUSION

Therefore, the preparation of the CTS-TA coating provides a revolutionary technique for implant surface modification to avoid postoperative bacterial infection and aseptic loosening.

Local administration with tauroursodeoxycholic acid could improve osseointegration of hydroxyapatite-coated titanium implants in ovariectomized rats

Despite advances in the pathogenesis of Tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) on bone, the understanding of the effects and mechanisms of bone osseointegration in TUDCA-associated Hydroxyapatite (HA)-coated titanium implants remains poor. Therefore, the present work was aimed to evaluate the effect of local administration with TUDCA on HA-coated titanium implants osseointegration in ovariectomized(OVX) rats and further investigation of the possible mechanism. Twelve weeks after bilateral ovariectomy, all animals were randomly divided into three groups: sham operation(Sham) group, OVX group and TUDCA group, and all the rats from Sham group and OVX group received HA implants and animals belonging to group TUDCA received TUDCA-HA implants until death at 12 weeks. The bilateral femurs of rats were harvested for evaluation. TUDCA increased new bone formation around the surface of titanium rods and push-out force other than group OVX. Histology, Micro-CT and biochemical analysis results showed systemic TUDCA showed positive effects than OVX group on bone formation in osteopenic rats, with beneficial effect on via activation OPG/RANKL pathway and BMP-2/Smad1 pathway and microarchitecture as well as by reducing protein expression of TNF-α and IFN-γ. The present study suggests that local use of TUDCA may bring benefits to the osseointegration of HA-coated titanium implants in patients with osteoporosis, and this effect may be related to the inhibition of inflammatory reaction and promotion of osteogenesis.

Review of the Applications of Biomedical Compositions Containing Hydroxyapatite and Collagen Modified by Bioactive Components

Regenerative medicine is becoming a rapidly evolving technique in today's biomedical progress scenario. Scientists around the world suggest the use of naturally synthesized biomaterials to repair and heal damaged cells. Hydroxyapatite (HAp) has the potential to replace drugs in biomedical engineering and regenerative drugs. HAp is easily biodegradable, biocompatible, and correlated with macromolecules, which facilitates their incorporation into inorganic materials. This review article provides extensive knowledge on HAp and collagen-containing compositions modified with drugs, bioactive components, metals, and selected nanoparticles. Such compositions consisting of HAp and collagen modified with various additives are used in a variety of biomedical applications such as bone tissue engineering, vascular transplantation, cartilage, and other implantable biomedical devices.

Development of novel bone-like nanocomposite coating of hydroxyapatite/collagen on titanium by modified electrophoretic deposition

Electrophoretic deposition (EPD) is a simple, rapid, and inexpensive technique to accomplish uniform coatings with controlled thicknesses. The EPD using binders that do not require a thermal degreasing process, which also eliminates the polymer components of the composite, are required for coating polymer-ceramic composites. This study demonstrated the application of a modified EPD technique utilizing Mg²⁺ ions to coat a bone-like hydroxyapatite/collagen nanocomposite (HAp/Col) on a titanium (Ti) substrate. The coating thickness was successfully controlled by varying the applied voltage and/or the treatment time. The adhesive strength of the modified EPD coating, evaluated by the tape test, showed class 0 (coating was not peeled off) and drastically increased in comparison to that of the non-Mg²⁺ EPD coating, class 5 (coating was completely peeled off). The MG63 cells on the HAp/Col-coated Ti demonstrated similar proliferation to and superior alkaline phosphatase activity to that on the bare Ti. Thus, the HAp/Col-coated Ti is expected to facilitate the surrounding bone formation than the bare-Ti. The results of the study indicated the HAp/Col-coated Ti prepared by the modified EPD is effective for applications in novel instruments, such as, subperiosteal temporary anchorage devices, which strongly requires rapid osseointegration at the bone-implant surface.

Parathyroid hormone (1-34) can reverse the negative effect of valproic acid on the osseointegration of titanium rods in ovariectomized rats

Objective

The present work was aimed to evaluate the effect of valproic acid (VPA)，Parathyroid hormone (1–34) (PTH)+VPA on Ti rods osseointegration in ovariectomized rats and further investigation of the possible mechanism.

Methods

The MC3T3-E1 cells were co-cultured with VPA，PTH ​+ ​VPA and induced to osteogenesis, and the cell viability，mineralization ability were observed by MTT and ALP staining，Alizarin Red staining and Western blotting. Twelve weeks after bilateral ovariectomy, all animals were randomly divided into four groups: group OVX and VPA，PTH ​+ ​VPA, and all the rats received Ti implants and animals belong to group VPA，PTH ​+ ​VPA received valproic acid (300 ​mg/day), valproic acid (300 ​mg/day) plus Parathyroid hormone (1–34) every 3 days (60 ​μg/kg), respectively, treatment until death at 12 weeks. Micro-CT, histology, biomechanical testing, bone metabolism index and Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) analysis were used to observe the therapeutic effect and explore the possible mechanism.

Results

Results shown that VPA decreased new bone formation around the surface of titanium rods and push-out force other than group OVX. Histology, Micro-CT and biochemical analysis results showed combined application of systemic VPA showed harmful effects than OVX group on bone formation in osteopenia rats, with the worse effects on CTX-1, P1NP and microarchitecture as well as biomechanical parameters by down-regulated gene expression of Runx2, OCN, Smad1, BMP-2 and OPG, while up-regulated RANKL. However, after PTH treatment, the above indicators were significantly improved.

Conclusions

The present study suggests that systemic use of VPA may bring harm to the stability of titanium implants in osteoporosis, PTH can reverse the negative effect of VPA on the osseointegration of titanium rods in ovariectomized rats.

According to our research, when patients with epilepsy have osteoporotic fractures, after joint replacement or internal fixation, continue to use sodium valproate for anti-epileptic therapy, the possibility of postoperative loosening increases, again on the basis of It can be reversed with the anti-osteoporosis drug parathyroid hormone (1-34).

Periosteum Mimetic Coating on Structural Bone Allografts via Electrospray Deposition Enhances Repair and Reconstruction of Segmental Defects

Structural bone allograft transplantation remains one of the common strategies for repair and reconstruction of large bone defects. Due to the loss of periosteum that covers the outer surface of the cortical bone, the healing and incorporation of allografts is extremely slow and limited. To enhance the biological performance of allografts, herein, we report a novel and simple approach for engineering a periosteum mimetic coating on the surface of structural bone allografts via polymer-mediated electrospray deposition. This approach enables the coating on allografts with precisely controlled composition and thickness. In addition, the periosteum mimetic coating can be tailored to achieve desired drug release profiles by making use of an appropriate biodegradable polymer or polymer blend. The efficacy study in a murine segmental femoral bone defect model demonstrates that the allograft coating composed of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) and bone morphogenetic protein-2 mimicking peptide significantly improves allograft healing as evidenced by decreased fibrotic tissue formation, increased periosteal bone formation, and enhanced osseointegration. Taken together, this study provides a platform technology for engineering a periosteum mimetic coating which can greatly promote bone allograft healing. This technology could eventually result in an off-the-shelf and multifunctional structural bone allograft for highly effective repair and reconstruction of large segmental bone defects. The technology can also be used to ameliorate the performance of other medical implants by modifying their surfaces.

Simvastatin can enhance the osseointegration of titanium rods in ovariectomized rats maintenance treatment with valproic acid

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Titanium–Equine Bone Biocomposites

Microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V/equine bone (EB) composites fabricated by ball milling and spark plasma sintering (SPS) have been investigated. Ti-6Al-4V/EB composites were successfully fabricated by a planetary ball-milling of spherical Ti6Al4V powder and natural EB powder and SPS at 1000 °C within 15 min under 50 MPa. EB was uniformly dispersed in the Ti6Al4V matrix owing to ball-milling, and beta phase transformation temperature of 1000 °C provided phase stability. The composites containing 0.5 wt.% EB exhibit Vickers hardness and elastic modulus of 540.6 HV and 130.5 GPa, respectively. The microstructures and mechanical properties of the composites were observed using scanning electron micrograph and nanoindentation.

Biocompatible Organic Coatings Based on Bisphosphonic Acid RGD-Derivatives for PEO-Modified Titanium Implants

Currently, significant attention is attracted to the problem of the development of the specific architecture and composition of the surface layer in order to control the biocompatibility of implants made of titanium and its alloys. The titanium surface properties can be tuned both by creating an inorganic sublayer with the desired morphology and by organic top coating contributing to bioactivity. In this work, we developed a composite biologically active coatings based on hybrid molecules obtained by chemical cross-linking of amino acid bisphosphonates with a linear tripeptide RGD, in combination with inorganic porous sublayer created on titanium by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO). After the addition of organic molecules, the PEO coated surface gets nobler, but corrosion currents increase. In vitro studies on proliferation and viability of fibroblasts, mesenchymal stem cells and osteoblast-like cells showed the significant dependence of the molecule bioactivity on the structure of bisphosphonate anchor and the linker. Several RGD-modified bisphosphonates of β-alanine, γ-aminobutyric and ε-aminocaproic acids with BMPS or SMCC linkers can be recommended as promising candidates for further in vivo research.

Enhancement of bone consolidation using high-frequency pulsed electromagnetic short-waves and titanium implants coated with biomimetic composite embedded into PLA matrix: in vivo evaluation

Purpose

Bone consolidation after severe trauma is the most challenging task in orthopedic surgery. This study aimed to develop biomimetic composite for coating Ti implants. Afterwards, these implants were tested in vivo to assess bone consolidation in the absence or the presence of high-frequency pulsed electromagnetic short-waves (HF-PESW).

Materials

Biomimetic coating was successfully developed using multi-substituted hydroxyapatite (ms-HAP) functionalized with collagen (ms-HAP/COL), embedded into poly-lactic acid (PLA) matrix (ms-HAP/COL@PLA), and subsequently covered with self-assembled COL layer (ms-HAP/COL@PLA/COL, named HAPc).

Methods

For in vivo evaluation, 32 Wistar albino rats were used in four groups: control group (CG) with Ti implant; PESW group with Ti implant+HF-PESW; HAPc group with Ti implant coated with HAPc; HAPc+PESW group with Ti implant coated with HAPc+HF-PESW. Left femoral diaphysis was fractured and fixed intramedullary. From the first post-operative day, PESW and HAPc+PESW groups underwent HF-PESW stimulation for 14 consecutive days. Biomimetic coating was characterized by XRD, HR-TEM, SEM, EDX and AFM.

Results

Osteogenic markers (ALP and osteocalcin) and micro-computed tomography (CT) analysis (especially bone volume/tissue volume ratio results) indicated at 2 weeks the following group order: HAPc+PESW>HAPc≈PESW (P>0.05) and HAPc+PESW>control (P<0.05), indicating the higher values in HAPc+PESW group compared to CG. The fracture-site bone strength showed, at 2 weeks, the highest average value in HAPc+PESW group. Moreover, histological analysis revealed the most abundant COL fibers assembled in dense bundles in HAPc-PESW group. At 8 weeks, micro-CT indicated higher values only in HAPc+PESW group vs CG (P<0.05), and histological results showed a complete-healed fracture in groups: HAPc+PESW, HAPc and PESW, but with more advanced bone remodeling in HAPc+PESW group.

Conclusion

Using Ti implants coated by HAPc jointly with HF-PESW stimulation positively influenced the bone consolidation process, especially in its early phase, thus potentially providing a superior strategy for clinical applications.

Enhanced bone formation onto the bone surface using a hydroxyapatite/collagen bone-like nanocomposite

The process of bone formation onto the bone surface using a hydroxyapatite/collagen bone-like nanocomposite (HAp/Col) was investigated. Immersion tests were performed to evaluate the impact of pH on the degradation of the specimens in an aqueous environment. The specimens were soaked in aqueous solutions of pH 4.0, 5.0, and 7.0. Using standardized images, the top-view areas of the specimens were measured. Animal experiments were performed to investigate the bone formation process onto the bone surface. The specimens were placed under the rat calvarial periosteum, and μCT image analysis and histological observation were performed on samples harvested on postoperative Days 3, 5, and 7. In all experiments, β-tricalciumphosphate (β-TCP) was adopted as the control. HAp/Col turned to gel in acidic environments below pH 5.0. In contrast to the β-TCP, the HAp/Col specimens placed under the periosteum expanded and attained a hollow structure with a gel-filled center, accompanied by larger volume of new bone and appearance of TRAP-positive multinucleated cells on postoperative Day 5. Therefore, HAp/Col can enhance bone formation onto the bone surface via induction of TRAP-positive multinucleated cells, and may have clinical applications.

A review of nanostructured surfaces and materials for dental implants: surface coating, patterning and functionalization for improved performance

The emerging field of nanostructured implants has enormous scope in the areas of medical science and dental implants. Surface nanofeatures provide significant potential solutions to medical problems by the introduction of better biomaterials, improved implant design, and surface engineering techniques such as coating, patterning, functionalization and molecular grafting at the nanoscale. This review is of an interdisciplinary nature, addressing the history and development of dental implants and the emerging area of nanotechnology in dental implants. After a brief introduction to nanotechnology in dental implants and the main classes of dental implants, an overview of different types of nanomaterials (i.e. metals, metal oxides, ceramics, polymers and hydrides) used in dental implant together with their unique properties, the influence of elemental compositions, and surface morphologies and possible applications are presented from a chemical point of view. In the core of this review, the dental implant materials, physical and chemical fabrication techniques and the role of nanotechnology in achieving ideal dental implants have been discussed. Finally, the critical parameters in dental implant design and available data on the current dental implant surfaces that use nanotopography in clinical dentistry have been discussed.

Hydroxyapatite-polymer biocomposites for bone regeneration: A review of current trends

Bone tissue engineering has emerged as one of the most indispensable approaches to address bone trauma in the past few decades. This approach offers an efficient and a risk-free alternative to autografts and allografts by employing a combination of biomaterials and cells to promote bone regeneration. Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a ceramic biomaterial that mimics the mineral composition of bones and teeth in vertebrates. HA, commonly produced via several synthetic routes over the years has been found to exhibit good bioactivity, biocompatibility, and osteoconductivity under both in vitro and in vivo conditions. However, the brittle nature of HA restricts its usage for load bearing applications. To address this problem, HA has been used in combination with several polymers in the form of biocomposite implants to primarily improve its mechanical properties and also enhance the implants' overall performance by simultaneously exploiting the positive effects of both HA and the polymer involved in making the biocomposite. This review article summarizes the past and recent developments in the evolution of HA-polymer biocomposite implants as an "ideal" biomaterial scaffold for bone regeneration. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Preparation of hydroxyapatite/collagen injectable bone paste with an anti-washout property utilizing sodium alginate. Part 1: influences of excess supplementation of calcium compounds

The anti-washout property, viscosity, and cytocompatibility to an osteoblastic cell line, MG-63, of anti-washout pastes were investigated. Mixing a hydroxyapatite/collagen bone-like nanocomposite (HAp/Col), an aqueous solution of sodium alginate (Na-Alg), which is a paste hardening and lubricant agent, and supplementation of calcium carbonate or calcium citrate (Ca-Cit) as a calcium resource for the hardening reaction realized an injectable bone paste. Adding Ca-Cit at a concentration greater than eight times the Ca²⁺ ion concentration to Na-Alg improved the anti-washout property. Although the viscosity test indicated a gradual increase in the paste viscosity as the calcium compounds increased, pastes with excess supplementation of calcium compounds exhibited injectability through a syringe with a 1.8 mm inner diameter, realizing an injectable bone filler. Furthermore, the anti-washout pastes with Ca-Cit had almost the same cell proliferation rate as that of the HAp/Col dense body. Therefore, HAp/Col injectable anti-washout pastes composed of the HAp/Col, Na-Alg, and Ca-Cit are potential candidates for bioresorbable bone filler pastes.

Shape Optimization of Bone-Bonding Subperiosteal Devices with Finite Element Analysis

Subperiosteal bone-bonding devices have been proposed for less invasive treatments in orthodontics. The device is osseointegrated onto a bone surface without fixation screws and is expected to rapidly attain a bone-bonding strength that successfully meets clinical performance. Hence, the device's optimum shape for rapid and strong bone bonding was examined in this study by finite element analyses. First, a stress analysis was performed for a circular rod device with an orthodontic force parallel to the bone surface, and the estimate of the bone-bonding strength based on the bone fracture criterion was verified with the results of an animal experiment. In total, four cross-sectional rod geometries were investigated: circular (Cr), elliptical (El), semicircular (Sc), and rectangular (Rc). By changing the height of the newly formed bone to mimic the progression of new bone formation, the estimation of the bone-bonding strength was repeated for each geometry. The rod with the Rc cross section exhibited the best performance, followed by those with the Sc, El, and Cr cross sections, from the aspects of the rapid acquisition of strength and the strength itself. Thus, the rectangular cross section is the best for rod-like subperiosteal devices for rapid bone bonding.

Biomimetic composite scaffolds containing bioceramics and collagen/gelatin for bone tissue engineering - A mini review

Bone is a natural composite material consisting of an organic phase (collagen) and a mineral phase (calcium phosphate, especially hydroxyapatite). The strength of bone is attributed to the apatite, while the collagen fibrils are responsible for the toughness and visco-elasticity. The challenge in bone tissue engineering is to develop such biomimetic composite scaffolds, having a balance between biological and biomechanical properties. This review summarizes the current state of the field by outlining composite scaffolds made of gelatin/collagen in combination with bioactive ceramics for bone tissue engineering application.

Covalently immobilised type I collagen facilitates osteoconduction and osseointegration of titanium coated implants

Background/Objective

Plasma-sprayed titanium coating (TC) with rough surfaces has been successfully applied in hip or knee prostheses. This study aimed to investigate the osteoconduction and osseointegration of Type I collagen covalently immobilised on TC (TC-AAC) compared with those of TC.

Methods

In vitro, the migration of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) on TC and TC-AAC was observed by scanning electron microscopy and visualised fluorescent live/dead assay. In vivo, a rabbit model with femur condyle defect was employed, and implants of TC and TC-AAC were embedded into the femur condyles.

Results

Collagen immobilised on TC could promote hMSCs' migration into the porous structure of the TC. Micro computed tomography images showed that bone trabeculae were significantly more abundant around TC-AAC implants than around TC implants. Fluorescence micrographs indicated more active new-bone formation around implants in the TC-AAC group than in the TC group. The measurement of bone–implant contact on histological sections indicated significantly greater osteointegration around TC-AAC implants than around TC ones.

Conclusion

Immobilised Type I collagen could improve the osteoconduction and osseointegration of TC implants.

Application of dental nanomaterials: potential toxicity to the central nervous system

Nanomaterials are defined as materials with one or more external dimensions with a size of 1-100 nm. Such materials possess typical nanostructure-dependent properties (eg, chemical, biological, optical, mechanical, and magnetic), which may differ greatly from the properties of their bulk counterparts. In recent years, nanomaterials have been widely used in the production of dental materials, particularly in light polymerization composite resins and bonding systems, coating materials for dental implants, bioceramics, endodontic sealers, and mouthwashes. However, the dental applications of nanomaterials yield not only a significant improvement in clinical treatments but also growing concerns regarding their biosecurity. The brain is well protected by the blood-brain barrier (BBB), which separates the blood from the cerebral parenchyma. However, in recent years, many studies have found that nanoparticles (NPs), including nanocarriers, can transport through the BBB and locate in the central nervous system (CNS). Because the CNS may be a potential target organ of the nanomaterials, it is essential to determine the neurotoxic effects of NPs. In this review, possible dental nanomaterials and their pathways into the CNS are discussed, as well as related neurotoxicity effects underlying the in vitro and in vivo studies. Finally, we analyze the limitations of the current testing methods on the toxicological effects of nanomaterials. This review contributes to a better understanding of the nano-related risks to the CNS as well as the further development of safety assessment systems.

Natural-based nanocomposites for bone tissue engineering and regenerative medicine: a review

Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine has been providing exciting technologies for the development of functional substitutes aimed to repair and regenerate damaged tissues and organs. Inspired by the hierarchical nature of bone, nanostructured biomaterials are gaining a singular attention for tissue engineering, owing their ability to promote cell adhesion and proliferation, and hence new bone growth, compared with conventional microsized materials. Of particular interest are nanocomposites involving biopolymeric matrices and bioactive nanosized fillers. Biodegradability, high mechanical strength, and osteointegration and formation of ligamentous tissue are properties required for such materials. Biopolymers are advantageous due to their similarities with extracellular matrices, specific degradation rates, and good biological performance. By its turn, calcium phosphates possess favorable osteoconductivity, resorbability, and biocompatibility. Herein, an overview on the available natural polymer/calcium phosphate nanocomposite materials, their design, and properties is presented. Scaffolds, hydrogels, and fibers as biomimetic strategies for tissue engineering, and processing methodologies are described. The specific biological properties of the nanocomposites, as well as their interaction with cells, including the use of bioactive molecules, are highlighted. Nanocomposites in vivo studies using animal models are also reviewed and discussed.

Significance of calcium phosphate coatings for the enhancement of new bone osteogenesis--a review

A systematic analysis of results available from in vitro, in vivo and clinical trials on the effects of biocompatible calcium phosphate (CaP) coatings is presented. An overview of the most frequently used methods to prepare CaP-based coatings was conducted. Dense, homogeneous, highly adherent and biocompatible CaP or hybrid organic/inorganic CaP coatings with tailored properties can be deposited. It has been demonstrated that CaP coatings have a significant effect on the bone regeneration process. In vitro experiments using different cells (e.g. SaOS-2, human mesenchymal stem cells and osteoblast-like cells) have revealed that CaP coatings enhance cellular adhesion, proliferation and differentiation to promote bone regeneration. However, in vivo, the exact mechanism of osteogenesis in response to CaP coatings is unclear; indeed, there are conflicting reports of the effectiveness of CaP coatings, with results ranging from highly effective to no significant or even negative effects. This review therefore highlights progress in CaP coatings for orthopaedic implants and discusses the future research and use of these devices. Currently, an exciting area of research is in bioactive hybrid composite CaP-based coatings containing both inorganic (CaP coating) and organic (collagen, bone morphogenetic proteins, arginylglycylaspartic acid etc.) components with the aim of promoting tissue ingrowth and vascularization. Further investigations are necessary to reveal the relative influences of implant design, surgical procedure, and coating characteristics (thickness, structure, topography, porosity, wettability etc.) on the long-term clinical effects of hybrid CaP coatings. In addition to commercially available plasma spraying, other effective routes for the fabrication of hybrid CaP coatings for clinical use still need to be determined and current progress is discussed.

Current perspectives: calcium phosphate nanocoatings and nanocomposite coatings in dentistry

The purpose of coatings on implants is to achieve some or all of the improvements in biocompatibility, bioactivity, and increased protection from the release of harmful or unnecessary metal ions. During the last decade, there has been substantially increased interest in nanomaterials in biomedical science and dentistry. Nanocomposites can be described as a combination of two or more nanomaterials. By this approach, it is possible to manipulate mechanical properties, such as strength and modulus of the composites, to become closer to those of natural bone. This is feasible with the help of secondary substitution phases. Currently, the most common composite materials used for clinical applications are those selected from a handful of available and well-characterized biocompatible ceramics and natural and synthetic polymers. This approach is currently being explored in the development of a new generation of nanocomposite coatings with a wider range of oral and dental applications to promote osseointegration. The aim of this review is to give a brief introduction into the new advances in calcium phosphate nanocoatings and their composites, with a range of materials such as bioglass, carbon nanotubes, silica, ceramic oxide, and other nanoparticles being investigated or used in dentistry.
