Abstract
In this paper, we use nested tensor-train contractions to compute vibrational and ro-vibrational energy levels of molecules with five and six atoms. At each step, we fully exploit symmetry by using symmetry adapted basis functions obtained from an irreducible tensor method. Contracted basis functions are determined by diagonalizing reduced dimensional Hamiltonian matrices. The size of matrices of eigenvectors, used to account for coupling between groups of coordinates, is reduced by discarding rows and columns. The size of the matrices that must be diagonalized is thus substantially reduced, making it possible to use direct eigensolvers, even for molecules with five and six atoms. The symmetry-adapted contracted vibrational basis functions have been used to compute J = 0 energy levels of the CH3CN (C3v) and J > 0 levels of CH4.

Abstract
The analysis and modeling of high-resolution spectra of nonrigid molecules require a specific Hamiltonian and group-theoretical formulation that differs significantly from that of more familiar rigid systems. Within the framework of Hougen-Bunker-Johns (HBJ) theory, this paper is devoted to the construction of a nonrigid Hamiltonian based on a suitable combination of numerical calculations for the nonrigid part in conjunction with the irreducible tensor operator method for the rigid part. For the first time, a variational calculation from ab initio potential energy surfaces is performed using the HBJ kinetic energy operator built from vibrational, large-amplitude motion, and rotational tensor operators expressed in terms of curvilinear and normal coordinates. Group theory for nonrigid molecules plays a central role in the characterization of the overall tunneling splittings and is discussed in the present approach. The construction of the dipole moment operator is also examined. Validation tests consisting of a careful convergence study of the energy levels as well as a comparison of results obtained from independent computer codes are given for the nonrigid molecules CH2, CH3, NH3, and H2O2. This work paves the way for the modeling of high-resolution spectra of larger nonrigid systems.

Abstract
The present paper is devoted to the implementation and validation of a second-order perturbative approach to anharmonic vibrations, followed by variational treatment of strong couplings (GVPT2) based on curvilinear internal coordinates. The main difference with respect to the customary Cartesian-based formulation is that the kinetic energy operator is no longer diagonal, and has to be expanded as well, leading to additional terms which have to be taken into proper account. It is, however, possible to recast all the equations as well-defined generalizations of the corresponding Cartesian-based counterparts, thus achieving a remarkable simplification of the new implementation. Particular attention is paid to the treatment of Fermi resonances with significant number of test cases analyzed fully, validating the new implementation. The results obtained in this work confirm that curvilinear coordinates strongly reduce the strength of inter-mode couplings compared to their Cartesian counterparts. This increases the reliability of low-order perturbative treatments for semi-rigid molecules and paves the way toward the reliable representation of more flexible molecules where small- and large-amplitude motions can be safely decoupled and treated at different levels of theory.

Abstract
In this paper, a novel methodology is presented for the construction of ab initio effective rotation-vibration spectroscopic models from potential energy and dipole moment surfaces. Non-empirical effective Hamiltonians are obtained via the block-diagonalization of selected variationally computed eigenvector matrices. For the first time, the derivation of an effective dipole moment is carried out in a systematic way. This general approach can be implemented quite easily in most of the variational computer codes and turns out to be a clear alternative to the rather involved Van Vleck perturbation method. Symmetry is exploited at all stages to translate first-principles calculations into a set of spectroscopic parameters to be further refined on experiment. We demonstrate on H2CO, PH3, CH4, C2H4, and SF6 that the proposed effective model can provide crucial information to spectroscopists within a very short time compared to empirical spectroscopic models. This approach brings a new insight into high-resolution spectrum analysis of polyatomic molecules and will be also of great help in the modeling of hot atmospheres where completeness is important.

Abstract
In this paper, we show that the standard second-order vibrational perturbation theory (VPT2) for Abelian groups can be used also for non-Abelian groups without employing specific equations for two- or threefold degenerate vibrations but rather handling in the proper way all the degeneracy issues and deriving the peculiar spectroscopic signatures of non-Abelian groups (e.g., l -doubling) by a posteriori transformations of the eigenfunctions. Comparison with the results of previous conventional implementations shows a perfect agreement for the vibrational energies of linear and symmetric tops, thus paving the route to the transparent extension of the equations already available for asymmetric tops to the energies of spherical tops and the infrared and Raman intensities of molecules belonging to non-Abelian symmetry groups. The whole procedure has been implemented in our general engine for vibro-rotational computations beyond the rigid rotor/harmonic oscillator model and has been validated on a number of test cases.

Abstract
While powerful techniques exist to accurately account for anharmonicity in vibrational molecular spectroscopy, they are computationally very expensive and cannot be routinely employed for large species and/or at non-zero vibrational temperatures. Motivated by the study of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) emission in space, we developed a new code, which takes into account all modes and can describe all infrared transitions including bands becoming active due to resonances as well as overtone, combination, and difference bands. In this article, we describe the methodology that was implemented and discuss how the main difficulties were overcome, so as to keep the problem tractable. Benchmarking with high-level calculations was performed on a small molecule. We carried out specific convergence tests on two prototypical PAHs, pyrene (C16H10) and coronene (C24H12), aiming at optimising tunable parameters to achieve both acceptable accuracy and computational costs for this class of molecules. We then report the results obtained at 0 K for pyrene and coronene, comparing the calculated spectra with available experimental data. The theoretical band positions were found to be significantly improved compared to harmonic density functional theory calculations. The band intensities are in reasonable agreement with experiments, the main limitation being the accuracy of the underlying calculations of the quartic force field. This is a first step toward calculating moderately high-temperature spectra of PAHs and other similarly rigid molecules using Monte Carlo sampling.

Abstract
We propose a method for solving the vibrational Schrödinger equation with which one can compute spectra for molecules with more than ten atoms. It uses sum-of-product (SOP) basis functions stored in a canonical polyadic tensor format and generated by evaluating matrix-vector products. By doing a sequence of partial optimizations, in each of which the factors in a SOP basis function for a single coordinate are optimized, the rank of the basis functions is reduced as matrix-vector products are computed. This is better than using an alternating least squares method to reduce the rank, as is done in the reduced-rank block power method. Partial optimization is better because it speeds up the calculation by about an order of magnitude and allows one to significantly reduce the memory cost. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the new method by computing vibrational spectra of two molecules, ethylene oxide (C2H4O) and cyclopentadiene (C5H6), with 7 and 11 atoms, respectively.

Abstract
Computation of full infrared (IR) and Raman spectra (including absolute intensities and transition energies) for medium- and large-sized molecular systems beyond the harmonic approximation is one of the most interesting challenges of contemporary computational chemistry. Contrary to common beliefs, low-order perturbation theory is able to deliver results of high accuracy (actually often better than those issuing from current direct dynamics approaches) provided that anharmonic resonances are properly managed. This perspective sketches the recent developments in our research group toward the development of a robust and user-friendly virtual spectrometer rooted in second-order vibrational perturbation theory (VPT2) and usable also by non-specialists essentially as a black-box procedure. Several examples are explicitly worked out in order to illustrate the features of our computational tool together with the most important ongoing developments.

Abstract
We present a theoretical framework for the computation of anharmonic vibrational frequencies for large systems, with a particular focus on determining adsorbate frequencies from first principles. We give a detailed account of our local implementation of the vibrational self-consistent field approach and its correlation corrections. We show that our approach is both robust, accurate and can be easily deployed on computational grids in order to provide an efficient computational tool. We also present results on the vibrational spectrum of hydrogen fluoride on pyrene, on the thiophene molecule in the gas phase, and on small neutral gold clusters.

Abstract
The equilibrium structure of acetylene (also named ethyne) has been reinvestigated to resolve the small discrepancies noted between different determinations. The size of the system as well as the large amount of available experimental data provides the quite unique opportunity to check the magnitude and relevance of various contributions to equilibrium structure as well as to verify the accuracy of experimental results. With respect to pure theoretical investigation, quantum-chemical calculations at the coupled-cluster level have been employed together with extrapolation to the basis set limit, consideration of higher excitations in the cluster operator, inclusion of core correlation effects as well as relativistic and diagonal Born-Oppenheimer corrections. In particular, it is found that the extrapolation to the complete basis set limit, the inclusion of higher excitations in the electronic-correlation treatment and the relativistic corrections are of the same order of magnitude. It also appears that a basis set as large as a core-valence quintuple-zeta set is required for accurately accounting for the inner-shell correlation contribution. From a pure experimental point of view, the equilibrium structure has been determined using very accurate rotational constants recently obtained by a "global analysis" (that is to say that all non-negligible interactions are explicitly included in the Hamiltonian matrix) of rovibrational spectra. Finally, a semi-experimental equilibrium structure (where the equilibrium rotational constants are obtained from the experimental ground state rotational constants and computed rovibrational corrections) has been obtained from the available experimental ground-state rotational constants for ten isotopic species corrected for computed vibrational corrections. Such a determination led to the revision of the ground-state rotational constants of two isotopologues, thus showing that structural determination is a good method to identify errors in experimental rotational constants. The three structures are found in a very good agreement, and our recommended values are r(CC) = 120.2958(7) pm and r(CH) = 106.164(1) pm.

Abstract
Two recently developed methods for solving the molecular vibrational Schrodinger equation, namely, the parallel vibrational multiple window configuration interaction and the vibrational mean field configuration interaction, are presented and compared on the same potential energy surface of ethylene oxide, c-C(2)H(4)O. It is demonstrated on this heptatomic system with strong resonances that both approaches converge towards the same fundamental frequencies. This confirms their ability to tackle the vibrational problem of large molecules for which full configuration interaction calculations are not tractable.

Abstract
In this article, we introduce a new method for solving the electronic Schrodinger equation. This new method follows the same idea followed by the mean-field configuration interaction method already developed for molecular vibrations; i.e., groups of electronic degrees of freedom are contracted together in the mean field of the other degrees. If the same partition of electronic degrees of freedom is iterated, a self-consistent field method is obtained. Making coarser partitions (i.e., including more degrees in the same groups) and discarding the high energy states, the full configuration interaction limit can be approached. In contrast with the usual group function theory, no strong orthogonality condition is enforced. We have made use of a generalized version of the fundamental formula defining a Hopf algebra structure to derive Hamiltonian and overlap matrix element expressions which respect the group structure of the wave function as well as its fermionic symmetry. These expressions are amenable to a recursive computation.
