Abstract
Valence tautomeric complexes (VT) are promising systems for creating molecular devices. From this viewpoint, valence tautomeric complexes with a hysteresis loop on the magnetic curve are of special interest as potential memory elements. The hysteresis loop is a consequence of retarded structural rearrangements which investigation is an actual problem. Recently, we have described a new VT transition taking place in a bis-dioxolene cobalt complex with imino-pyridine having a TEMPO substituent (A. A. Zolotukhin, et al., Inorg. Chem., 2017, 56, 14751-14754). Valence tautomeric transformation occurs with a hysteresis loop and is accompanied by a phase transition. The phase transition taking place during cooling is accompanied by crystal destruction. This fact makes it impossible to monitor the structural changes responsible for the hysteresis loop. The current research attempts to resolve this problem. A nickel compound of the same composition (TEMPO-imino-pyridine)Ni(3,6-DBSQ)2 was synthesized and characterized. It was established to be isostructural with the cobalt complex. It was used as an inert matrix for the dilution of the VT cobalt complex. The number of solid solutions with Co/Ni ratios of 1 : 1, 1 : 2, 1 : 4, and 1 : 8 was obtained. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements show that VT transformation with a hysteresis loop takes place in all solid solutions. The hysteresis loop is shifted to low temperatures primarily due to the shifting of its low-temperature boundary with dilution. The hysteresis width does not change significantly with dilution. DSC detected that transformations are accompanied by phase transitions at different temperatures at cooling and heating. The phase transition at the first cooling occurs at slightly lower temperatures compared with subsequent cycles. These temperatures correspond to the transition temperatures detected from the magnetic curves. The phase transition during the first cooling is accompanied by crystal destruction. Physical destruction takes place in the crystals of all solid solutions. X-ray diffraction powder patterns confirm that phase transition is accompanied by considerable reorganization of the crystal structure typical for the first order transitions. The unit cell volume of solid solutions is larger than that of pure complexes. Especially calculated crystal invariom indicated that the "lattice energy" in a solid solution is the lowest compared with that in "pure" nickel and cobalt complexes.

Abstract
The correlation consistent basis sets (cc-pVnZ with n = D, T, Q, 5) for the Ga-Br elements have been redesigned, tuning the sets for use for density functional approximations. Steps to redesign these basis sets for an improved correlation energy recovery and efficiency include truncation of higher angular momentum functions, recontraction of basis set coefficients, and reoptimization of basis set exponents. These redesigned basis sets are compared with conventional cc-pVnZ basis sets and other basis sets, which are, in principle, designed to achieve systematic improvement with respect to increasing basis set size. The convergence of atomic energies, bond lengths, bond dissociation energies, and enthalpies of formation to the Kohn-Sham limit is improved relative to other basis sets where convergence to the Kohn-Sham limit is typically not observed.

Abstract
[1,8]-Naphthyridine derivatives have been reported to possess important biological activities and may serve as attractive pharmacophores in the drug discovery process. [1,8]-Naphthyridine derivatives (1a-1l) were evaluated for inhibitory potential for isozymes of carbonic anhydrase (CA) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). CAs have been reported to carry out reversible hydration of CO2 into HCO3-, secretion of electrolytes, acid-base regulation, bone resorption, calcification, and biosynthetic reactions. Whereas ALPs hydrolyze monophosphate esters with the release of inorganic phosphate and play an important role in bone mineralization. Both enzymes have been found to be over-expressed and raised functional activities in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. The discovery of dual inhibitors of these enzymes may provide a synergistic effect to cure bone disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis. Among the test compounds, the most potent inhibitors for CA-II, CA-IX, and CA-XII were 1e, 1g, and 1a with IC50 values of 0.44 ± 0.19, 0.11 ± 0.03 and 0.32 ± 0.07 µM, respectively. [1,8]-Naphthyridine derivatives (1a-1l) were approximately 4 folds more potent than standard CA inhibitor acetazolamide. While in the case of ALPs, the most potent compounds for b-TNAP and c-IAP were 1b and 1e with IC50 values of 0.122 ± 0.06 and 0.107 ± 0.02 µM, respectively. Thus, synthesized derivatives proved to be 100 to 800 times more potent as compared to standard inhibitors of b-TNAP and c-IAP (Levamisole and L-phenyl alanine, respectively). In addition, selectivity and dual inhibition of [1,8]-Naphthyridine derivatives confer precedence over known inhibitors. Molecular docking and molecular simulation studies were also conducted in the present studies to define the type of interactions between potential inhibitors and enzyme active sites.

Abstract
A mild C-H activation reaction catalysed by an Ir(III)-complex to generate chromones from salicylaldehydes at room temperature has been studied theoretically to explore the reaction mechanism. The DFT study reveals that the key point of the catalytic cycle is cyclometallation, more precisely it is in the C-H metallation step where the significance of the metal becomes obvious. The favourable pathway includes several steps, namely, coordination of the substrate with the metal catalyst, O-H metallation, C-H metallation, denitrogenation, migration insertion, proton transfer, and demetallation. On removal of one pivalic acid, the metal is activated and the C-H metallation proceeds via oxidative addition followed by reductive elimination. The DFT study clearly indicated that, although there are two possibilities for cyclometallation, it only proceeds via O-H metallation followed by stepwise C-H metallation. The effect of substituents on the mechanism was also been studied. The low energetic span obtained for this catalytic cycle implies that the reaction can proceed at room temperature, and this is consistent with the experimental result.

Abstract
Since total cross section measurements for electron scattering by Zn and Cd performed in the 1970s, the existence of p-wave shape resonances below 1 eV are well established in the literature. It was suggested that a second d-wave shape resonance could exist in both systems at an energy slightly higher than the one recorded for the p-wave but still below the inelastic threshold. We report elastic scattering calculations for electron collisions with Zn and Cd atoms below 4 eV using a semiempirical approach, as well the scattering length for both targets. Our results show that, indeed, the d-wave shape resonance is found in Zn but absent in Cd. In fact, our cross sections and the few other ones available for this energy range are in discrepancy with the available experimental total cross sections for Cd.

Abstract
This work revealed the spherical aromaticity of some inorganic E4 cages and their protonated E4 H+ ions (E=N, P, As, Sb, and Bi). For this purpose, we employed several evaluations like (0D-1D) nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS), multidimensional (2D-3D) off-nucleus isotropic shielding σiso (r), and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. The magnetic calculations involved gauge-including atomic orbitals (GIAO) with two density functionals B3LYP and WB97XD, and basis sets of Jorge-ATZP, 6-311+G(d,p), and Lanl2DZp. The Jorge-ATZP basis set showed the best consistency. Our findings disclosed non-classical aromatic characters in the above molecules, which decreased from N to Bi cages. Also, the results showed more aromaticity in E4 than E4 H+ . The NBO analysis attributed the aromaticity in the above molecules to the residual density of the overlapping σ-bonding orbitals. So, the aromaticity in these molecules is unlike the classical aromaticity that is associated with electron delocalization. Scanning 1D σiso (r) variation along E-E bonds indicated a lowering in the shielding trend from N to Bi cages. The 3D results showed a similar decrease in the relative volumetric diffusion of the magnetic activity, whereas the volumetric ratio of V1ppm /V2ppm is almost constant for all the E4 cages.

Abstract
Using high-level ab initio many-body theory, we theoretically propose that the Dy and the Ni atoms in the [Dy2Ni2(L)4(NO3)2(DMF)2] real molecular magnet as well as in its core, that is, the [Dy2Ni2O6] system, act as two-level qubit systems. Despite their spatial proximity we can individually control each qubit in this highly correlated real magnetic system through specially designed laser-pulse combinations. This allows us to prepare any desired two-qubit state and to build several classical and quantum logic gates, such as the two-qubit (binary) CNOT gate with three distinct laser pulses. Other quantum logic gates include the single-qubit (unary) quantum X, Y, and Z Pauli gates; the Hadamard gate (which necessitates the coherent quantum superposition of two many-body electronic states); and the SWAP gate (which plays an important role in Shor's algorithm for integer factorization). Finally, by sequentially using the achieved CNOT and Hadamard gates we are able to obtain the maximally entangled Bell states, for example, (12)(|00⟩ + |11⟩).

Abstract
The 3-Iodo-1-nitrosonaphthalene-2-ol (I-NON) was obtained by the copper(II)-mediated iodination of 1-nitroso-2-naphthol (NON). The suitable reactants and optimized reaction conditions, providing 94% NMR yield of I-NON, included the usage of Cu(OAc)2·H2O and 1:2:8 CuII/NON/I2 molar ratio between the reactants. The obtained I-NON was characterized by elemental analyses (C, H, N), high-resolution ESI+-MS, 1H and 13C{1H} NMR, FTIR, UV-vis spectroscopy, TGA, and X-ray crystallography (XRD). The copper(II) complexes bearing deprotonated I-NON were prepared as follows: cis-[Cu(I-NON-H)(I-NON)](I3) (1) was obtained by the reaction between Cu(NON-H)2 and I2 in CHCl3/MeOH, while trans-[Cu(I-NON-H)2] (2) was synthesized from I-NON and Cu(OAc)2 in MeOH. Crystals of trans-[Cu(I-NON-H)2(THF)2] (3) and trans-[Cu(I-NON-H)2(Py)2] (4) were precipitated from solutions of 2 in CHCl3/THF and Py/CHCl3/MeOH mixtures, respectively. The structures of 1 and 3-4 were additionally verified by X-ray crystallography. The characteristic feature of the structures of 1 and 3 is the presence of intermolecular halogen bonds with the involvement of the iodine center of the metal-bound deprotonated I-NON. The nature of the I···I and I···O contacts in the structures of 1 and 3, correspondingly, were studied theoretically at the DFT (PBE0-D3BJ) level using the QTAIM, ESP, ELF, NBO, and IGM methods.

Abstract
From the segmented all-electron basis set of double zeta valence quality plus polarization functions (DZP) for the elements from H to Xe, the zeroth-order regular approximation (ZORA) is used to generate a DZP-ZORA basis set, i.e., the contraction coefficients of the DZP set are re-optimized using the minimum ZORA energy criterion. To properly describe electrons distant from the nuclei, a diffuse function is added to each atomic symmetry (s, p, d, and f). The later basis set is designated as DZP-ZORA augmented. To test the effectiveness of the basis sets developed in this work, calculations of ionization energies and mean dipole polarizabilities of some elements are performed using the ZORA-CCSD(T) method. At the same level of theory, bond lengths, dissociation energies, and harmonic vibrational frequencies of some diatoms are also reported. Comparison with experimental data and recommended values available in the literature is made. Except for polarizability, scalar relativistic effects are estimated for the other properties. The performances of the ZORA and second-order Douglas-Kroll-Hess Hamiltonians are evaluated.

Abstract
Bond energy is the main characteristic of chemical bonds in general and of non-covalent interactions in particular. Simple methods of express estimates of the interaction energy, Eint, using relationships between Eint and a property which is easily accessible from experiment is of great importance for the characterization of non-covalent interactions. In this work, practically important relationships between Eint and electron density, its Laplacian, curvature, potential, kinetic, and total energy densities at the bond critical point as well as bond length were derived for the structures of the [Z-I···Hal]- and [Z-Hal···I]- types bearing halogen bonds and involving iodine as interacting atom(s) (totally 412 structures). Abstract
AbstractThe potential energy curves and the NMR properties: nuclear spin–spin coupling constants and nuclear shielding constants have been calculated for Zn2, Cd2 and Hg2 dimers using density functional theory. The calculations have been carried out using the relativistic four-component Dirac–Coulomb Hamiltonian, and, in the case of energy curves, also relativistic effective core potentials. In case of NMR parameters, the relativistic effects turned out to be critically important even for the lightest dimer, Zn2. The importance of the spin–orbit coupling depends on the internuclear distance: these effects tend to be significant for short internuclear distances.

Abstract
Relationships between interaction energy (Eint) and electron density properties at the X···X bond critical point or the d(X···X) distance were established for the large set of structures [(A)nY-X···X-Z(B)m] bearing the halogen bonds Cl···Cl, Br···Br, and I···I (640 structures in total). The best estimator of Eint is the kinetic energy density (Gb), which reasonably approximates the whole set of the structures as -Eint = 0.128Gb2 - 0.82Gb + 1.66 (R2 = 0.91, mean absolute deviation 0.39 kcal/mol) and demonstrates low dispersion. The potential and kinetic energy densities, electron density, and the d(X···X) distance behave similarly as estimators of Eint for the individual series Cl···Cl, Br···Br, and I···I. A number of the Eint(property) correlations are recommended for the practical application in the express estimates of the strength of the homo-halogen bonds.

Abstract
Precise experimental setups for detection of variation of fundamental constants, scalar dark matter, or gravitational waves, such as laser interferometers, optical cavities, and resonant-mass detectors, are directly linked to measuring changes in material size. Here we present calculated and experiment-derived estimates for both α and μ dependence of lattice constants and bond lengths of selected solid-state materials and diatomic molecules that are needed for interpretation of such experiments.

Abstract
In this paper, the mechanistic studies on the isomerization of hydroxyl and silyl derivatives of bicyclic cyclopropanes under the catalytic action of Zeise's salt have been reported. The catalytic activity of both the monomeric and the dimeric forms of Zeise's salt has been studied by applying the high-level quantum mechanical method. Results from this investigation reveal that the reaction goes favorably under the catalysis of the dimeric form of Zeise's salt. The calculated activation barrier for the catalytic process using Zeise's dimer reveals that the rearrangement occurs with an activation barrier of 19-25 kcal mol-1. Depending on the nature of substituents present on the substrate, formation of various products has been explained. This study also includes the heteronuclear counter part of Zeise's dimer where one of the Pt-metals is replaced by palladium (Pd) and nickel (Ni) successively. The calculated activation barrier using these heteronuclear catalysts is found to be close enough to that calculated for the catalytic pathway using Zeise's dimer.

Abstract
Structure, spectrophotometric and protolytic properties of the styryl dye 2-[4-(dimethylamino)styryl]-1-ethylquinolinium iodide (R) as well as its complex with tungsten were studied. The selective protonation of dimethylamino group was confirmed by density functional theory investigation through the computation of Fukui function, NPA partial atomic charges, and NICS(0) aromaticity indexes. The TD-DFT study explains the experimental change of color by excluding the dimethylamino group from HOMO orbital upon protonation. The acid dissociation constant, the optimum wavelength and the molar absorptivity of R were found to be: 3.02, 501nm and 4.0×104Lmol-1cm-1, respectively. The protolytic properties of the reagent were found to change significantly in the presence of tungsten(VI). Analysis of bond critical points between the anions and Quinaldine Red cation gives the selectivity raw HWO4->MoO4->H2VO4->ReO4->ClO4-, that perfectly match with the experimental data. Based on this observation, a non-extractive sequential-injection spectrophotometric method for the determination of tungsten was developed. The absorbance of the colored extracts obeys Beer's law up to 55.2mgL-1 of W at 520nm wavelength. The limit of detection calculated from a blank test (n=10) based on 3s was 0.96mgL-1. The developed method was applied for the determination of tungsten in model samples.

Abstract
2,4-Bis(1,3,7-trimethyl-pteridine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione-6-yl)-2,3-dihydro-2-methyl-1H-1,5-benzodiazepine (DLMBZD) has been prepared and its molecular and crystal structures have been determined from spectral and XRD data. The benzodiazepine ligand was reacted with zinc(ii), cadmium(ii) and mercury(ii) chloride, bromide and iodide to give complexes with general formula [M(DLMBZD)X2]. The complexes have been synthesized and characterized by IR, NMR and elemental analysis. The structure of seven complexes has been obtained by single crystal X-ray diffraction. In all the cases, the metal is (2 + 2 + 1)-five-coordinated by two halide ligands, two nitrogen atoms from pyrazine and diazepine rings and a carbonyl oxygen from a pteridine ring. The coordinated-metal environment is a square-based pyramid, with increasing trigonality from Hg(ii) to Zn(ii) complexes. To coordinate the metals, the ligand folds itself, establishing four intramolecular σ-π interactions with the pyrimidine and pyrazine rings. A topological analysis of the electron density using the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules and the complexes stability has been performed.

Abstract
For over a decade, amine-borane has been considered as a potential chemical hydrogen vector in the context of a search for cleaner energy sources. When catalyzed by organometallic complexes, the reaction mechanisms currently considered involve the formation of β-BH agostic intermediates. A thorough understanding of these intermediates may constitute a crucial step toward the identification of ideal catalysts. Topological approaches such as QTAIM and ELF revealed to be particularly suitable for the description of β-agostic interactions. When studying model catalysts, accurate theoretical calculations may be carried out. However, for a comparison with experimental data, calculations should also be carried out on large organo-metallic species, often including transition metals belonging to the second or the third row. In such a case, DFT methods are particularly attractive. Unfortunately, triple-ζ all electrons basis sets are not easily available for heavy transition metal elements. Thus, a subtle balance should be reached between the affordable level of calculations and the required accuracy of the electronic description of the systems. Herein we propose the use of B3LYP functional in combination with the LanL2DZ pseudopotential for the metal atom and 6-311++G(2d,2p) basis set for the other atoms, followed by a single point using the DKH2 relativistic Hamiltonian in combination with the B3LYP/DZP-DKH level, as a "minimum level of theory" leading to a consistent topological description of the interaction within the ELF and QTAIM framework, in the context of isolated (gas-phase) group 4 metallocene catalysts.

Abstract
The photobleaching of an unsubstituted phthalocyanine (gallium(III) phthalocyanine chloride (GaPc)) and a substituted phthalocyanine (1,4-(tetrakis[4-(benzyloxy)phenoxy]phthalocyaninato) indium(III) chloride (InTBPPc)) was monitored for the free photosensitizers and for the phthalocyanines encapsulated into nanoparticles of PEGylated poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA-PEG). Phosphate-buffered solutions (PBS) and organic solutions of the free GaPc or the free InTBPPc, and suspensions of each encapsulated photosensitizer (2-15μmol/L) were irradiated using a laser diode of 665nm with a power of 1-104mW and a light dose of 7.5J/cm2. The relative absorbance (RA) of the free GaPc dissolved in 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (MP) decreased 8.4 times when the laser power increased from 1mW to 104mW. However, the free or encapsulated GaPc did not suffer the photobleaching in PBS solution. The RA values decreased 2.4 times and 22.2 times for the free InTBPPc dissolved in PBS solution and in dimethylformamide (DMF), respectively, but the encapsulated InTBPPc was only photobleached when the laser power was 104mW at 8μmol/L. The increase of the free GaPc concentration favored the photobleaching in MP until 8μmol/L while the increase from 2μmol/L to 5μmol/L reduced the photodegradation in PBS solution. However, the photobleaching of the free InTBPPc in DMF or in PBS solution, and of each encapsulated photosensitizer was not influenced by increasing the concentration. The influence of the photobleaching on the capability of the free and encapsulated GaPc and InTBPPc to photooxidate the simple molecules was investigated monitoring the fluorescence of dimethylanthracene (DMA) and the tryptophan (Trp). Free InTBPPc was 2.0 and 1.8 times faster to photooxidate the DMA and Trp than it was the free GaPc, but the encapsulated GaPc was 3.4 times more efficient to photooxidize the Trp than it was the encapsulated InTBPPc due to the photodegradation suffered by the encapsulated InTBPPc. The participation of the singlet oxygen was confirmed with the sodium azide in the photobleaching of all free and encapsulated photosensitizer, and in the photooxidation of the DMA and Trp. The asymmetry of InTBPPc increased the solubility of the free compound, decreasing the aggregation state of the photosensitizer and favoring the photobleaching process. The encapsulation shows capability in decreasing the photobleaching of both photosensitizers but the confocal micrographs showed that the increase of the solubility favored the InTBPPc photobleaching during the acquisition of optical cross section.

Abstract
The photophysical properties of 4-(2-dimethylaminoethyloxy)-N-octadecyl-1,8-naphthalimide (DON) consisting of donor and acceptor units were investigated in different solutions. Changing from a non-polar to a polar solvent increased the solvent interaction and both the excitation and emission spectra were shifted to longer wavelength and intensity decreased through taking advantage of twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and spectral analyses revealed that such fluorophores were capable of sensing protons by intramolecular charge transfer (ICT). Empirical and quantum mechanical calculations showed that the electron donating effect of the dimethylamino group decreased the change in dipole moment on excitation which resulted in a fluorescence quantum yield remarkably enhanced as the solvent polarity increased. In alkaline media the fluorescence of DON was quenched owing to photoinduced electron transfer being disabled in acidic media. The pK(a) of the 1,8-naphthailimide dye was 6.70, which defines the dye as a highly efficient "off-on" switch. DON exhibited a typical aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) behavior that it is virtually nonemissive in organic solvent but highly luminescent in water, as a result of the restriction of free intramolecular rotation of a C-N bond and the non-planar configuration in the aggregate state. The hydrophobicity of octadecyl group provided DON with a fluorescent response to water based on AIEE and the water-dependent spectral characteristics of DON, and the AIEE of DON caused by the effect of water and formation of J-aggregation states. In the range of 0-79.8% (v/v), the fluorescence intensity of DON in acetone solution increased as a linear function of the water content. The optimum detection limits were of 0.011%, 0.0021%, and 0.0033% of water in acetone, ethanol, and acetonitrile, respectively. Satisfactory reproducibility, reversibility and a short response time were realized.
