Abstract
In developing countries, Norovirus is the second-leading cause of acute diarrhea, after rotavirus. The approved gold standard method for diagnosis of norovirus infection is RT-PCR. The rapid immunochromatographic test is a novel and expedient method for diagnosing norovirus that is relatively affordable. However, the use of the rapid immunochromatographic test remains controversial because of its accuracy. This study aimed to explore whether the rapid immunochromatographic test could be used for diagnosing norovirus-related diarrhea in children. Rapid immunochromatographic test (QuickNaviTM-Norovirus2) and RT-PCR on stool samples was used to diagnose norovirus. Stool samples were obtained from pediatric patients aged between 1 and 60 months who had diarrhea and were admitted to the pediatric ward at Dr. Soetomo General Hospital Surabaya, between April 2013 and March 2014. Ninety-four subjects provided stool samples that were tested using QuickNaviTM-Noro2 and RT-PCR. Using the test, 64 samples tested positive for norovirus and 30 tested negatives. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy of the rapid immunochromatographic test were consecutively 90.3%, 42.9%, 43.8%, 90%, and 58.5%. RT-PCR was used to test all samples to assess the accuracy, which showed that one from 31 samples contained the GI strain (1.1%), while 30 samples (32%) contained the GII strain. This study definitively establishes that the rapid immunochromatography test is not sufficiently accurate for use as a screening or diagnostic tool in norovirus-related diarrhea cases in children.

Abstract
Background: The objective of this study was to investigate the clinical manifestation of norovirus infection between norovirus genogroup and severity of acute diarrhea in pediatric patients at the Dr. Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya, Indonesia. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved 31 participants aged 1-60 months admitted to the hospital with acute diarrhea from April 2012 to March 2013. Norovirus genogroups (GI and II) were identified from patient stool using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Severity was measured using the Ruuska and Vesikari scoring system. Results: In total, 94 stool samples were obtained, of which 31 (19%) were norovirus positive. Norovirus GI was found in one sample with mild diarrhea. Norovirus GII was found in 30 samples (96.8%); one sample with mild diarrhea (3.3%), 20 samples with moderate diarrhea (66.7%), and nine samples with severe diarrhea (30%). Conclusion: Norovirus GII was the most prevalent cause of acute diarrhea and 30% of the cases manifested as severe diarrhea.

Abstract
Noroviruses are a major cause of viral gastroenteritis. The burden of the norovirus in low-resource settings is not well-established due to limited data. This study reviews the norovirus prevalence, epidemiology, and genotype diversity in lower-middle-income countries (LMIC) and in low-income countries (LIC). PubMed was searched up to 14 January 2019 for norovirus studies from all LIC and LMIC (World Bank Classification). Studies that tested gastroenteritis cases and/or asymptomatic controls for norovirus by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) were included. Sixty-four studies, the majority on children <5 years of age, were identified, and 14% (95% confidence interval; CI 14–15, 5158/36,288) of the gastroenteritis patients and 8% (95% CI 7–9, 423/5310) of healthy controls tested positive for norovirus. In LMIC, norovirus was detected in 15% (95% CI 15–16) of cases and 8% (95% CI 8–10) of healthy controls. In LIC, 11% (95% CI 10–12) of symptomatic cases and 9% (95% CI 8–10) of asymptomatic controls were norovirus positive. Norovirus genogroup II predominated overall. GII.4 was the predominant genotype in all settings, followed by GII.3 and GII.6. The most prevalent GI strain was GI.3. Norovirus causes a significant amount of gastroenteritis in low-resource countries, albeit with high levels of asymptomatic infection in LIC and a high prevalence of coinfections.

Abstract
Rotaviruses and noroviruses are the most important viral causes of acute gastroenteritis in children. While previous studies of acute gastroenteritis in Indonesia mainly focused on rotavirus, here, we investigated the burden and epidemiology of norovirus and rotavirus disease. Children less than five years of age hospitalized with acute gastroenteritis were enrolled in this study from January to December 2015 at three participating hospitals. Rotavirus was detected by enzyme immunoassay (EIA), followed by genotyping by reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR). Norovirus genogroups were determined by TaqMan-based quantitative RT-PCR. Among 406 enrolled children, 75 (18.47%), 223 (54.93%) and 29 (7.14%) cases were positive for norovirus, rotavirus and both viruses (mixed infections), respectively. Most cases clinically presented with fever, diarrhea, vomiting and some degree of dehydration. The majority (n = 69/75 [92%]) of the noroviruses identified belonged to genogroup II, and several genotypes were identified by sequencing a subset of samples. Among 35 samples tested for rotavirus genotype, the most prevalent genotype was G3P[8] (n = 30/35 [85.6%]). Our study suggests that the burden of norovirus diseases in Indonesian children should not be underestimated. It also shows the emergence of rotavirus genotype G3P[8] in Indonesia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diarrhea significantly contributes to the global burden of diseases, particularly in developing countries. Rotavirus and norovirus are the most dominant viral agents responsible for diarrheal disease globally. The aim of this review was to conduct a comprehensive assessment of rotavirus and norovirus study in Indonesia. DATA SOURCES Articles about rotavirus and norovirus surveillance in Indonesia were collected from databases, including PubMed and Google Scholar. Manual searching was performed to identify additional studies. Furthermore, relevant articles about norovirus diseases were included. RESULTS A national surveillance of rotavirus-associated gastroenteritis has been conducted for years, resulting in substantial evidence about the high burden of the diseases in Indonesia. In contrast, norovirus infection received relatively lower attention and very limited data are available about the incidence and circulating genotypes. Norovirus causes sporadic and epidemic gastroenteritis globally. It is also emerging as a health problem in immunocompromised individuals. During post-rotavirus vaccination era, norovirus potentially emerges as the most frequent cause of diarrheal diseases. CONCLUSIONS Our review identifies knowledge gaps in Indonesia about the burden of norovirus diseases and the circulating genotypes. Therefore, there is a pressing need to conduct national surveillance to raise awareness of the community and national health authority about the actual burden of norovirus disease in Indonesia. Continuing rotavirus surveillance is also important to assess vaccine effectiveness and to continue tracking any substantial changes of circulating rotavirus genotypes.

Abstract
Norovirus (NoV) is a major cause of nonbacterial acute gastroenteritis worldwide in all age groups, and asymptomatic individuals may contribute to NoV transmission as a reservoir. Nonetheless, little information is available regarding asymptomatic NoV infection in Indonesia. We performed an epidemiological analysis of NoV infection among asymptomatic healthy volunteers in the city of Surabaya, Indonesia (population ~2.75 million). A total of 512 stool samples from 18 individuals (age range 20-42years) collected from July 2015 to June 2016 were examined. The detection of NoV and the genotype classification were carried out by a reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) direct sequencing method. NoV was detected in 14 of the 512 stool samples (2.7%), with 7 individuals (38.9%) having at least 1 positive stool sample. All 14 of the NoV strains detected belonged to genogroup GII. The phylogenetic analysis indicated that 10 strains (71.4%) were grouped with GII.2, 2 (14.3%) were GII.17, 1 was GII.4 Sydney 2012, and 1 was GII.1. The circulation of GII.Pg/GII.1 and GII.Pe/GII.4 Sydney 2012 recombinant variants was detected among an asymptomatic population in Surabaya, Indonesia. Of the 7 positive individuals, 2 were repeatedly infected with the same strain and heterogenous strains. Taken together, our results suggest that the excretion of NoV from healthy individuals is one of the sources of NoV outbreak.

Abstract
Noroviruses (NoVs) are a major cause of nonbacterial acute gastroenteritis. The molecular epidemiology of NoV infections in China has not been well characterized. To study the incidence of NoV infections and the nature of the circulating NoV genotypes, 403 specimens were collected from adult outpatients with acute gastroenteritis in Beijing, China, between October 2007 and September 2008. Samples were examined for NoV by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and sequences corresponding to both the NoV polymerase and capsid regions were characterized. Among the 403 specimens, 48 (11.9%) were positive for NoV and 1/3 NoV-associated gastroenteritis cases occurred during the colder months (November and December). Based on polymerase region sequences, 6 NoV genotypes (GII-4, GII-b, GII-6, GI-2, GI-3, and GI-4) were identified with GII-4 2006b being the most predominant genotype (37/48, 77.1%). Eleven distinct genotype sequences in polymerase and capsid regions were identified, indicating a genetic diversity among NoV isolates. This study suggested NoVs were an important pathogen responsible for sporadic acute gastroenteritis in adults in Beijing, China.

Abstract
AIM Noroviruses (NoVs) are an important cause of acute gastroenteritis but knowledge on the disease burden and epidemiology in children in the developing countries remains limited. In this study, we performed a surveillance of NoV gastroenteritis in children of China to address some of the questions. METHODS Faecal specimens from children (<5 years of age) at outpatient clinics of the Nan Fang Hospital in Guangzhou, China during the fall-winter seasons in 2003-2006 were tested for rotaviruses (RVs) and NoVs. A questionnaire on clinical records and hygiene habits was collected from each patient. RESULTS Among 957 stool specimens tested, 488 (51%) specimens were positive for RVs. NoVs were detected in 112 (24%) of the 469 RV negative specimens. The Genogroup II (GII), particularly GII-4, viruses were predominant. No significant difference of clinical symptoms, hospitalisation and patient care expenses were found between children infected with NoVs and RVs. Consumption of uncooked food is a risk for NoV infection. Contact with diarrhoea patients is a suspected risk factor. Cutting nails frequently is a protective factor against NoV infection. CONCLUSIONS NoVs are an important cause of acute gastroenteritis in children which need special attention of patient care at the clinics in addition to RVs. The awareness of those risk factors may help future disease control and prevention.

Abstract
Human norovirus (NoV) has been studied extensively as an important cause of gastroenteritis outbreaks worldwide. While oysters are a primary vehicle for infection, few studies have examined the wider distribution of NoV in the estuarine environment. Active shellfish-harvesting areas in Georgia were examined for the prevalence, genotype diversity, and concentrations of NoV in a variety of estuarine sample types over the course of 1 year. Of the 225 samples (9 oyster, 72 water, 72 63- to 200-microm plankton, and 72 >200-microm plankton) collected from 12 stations across two estuaries, 21 samples (9.3%) tested positive for NoV. By sample type, 55.0% (5/9) of oysters, 8.3% (6/72) of water samples, 11.1% (8/72) of 63- to 200-microm plankton samples, and 2.8% (2/72) of >200-microm plankton samples were positive for human NoV. The two NoV-positive >200-microm plankton samples, which contained mainly zooplankton, had the greatest quantity of NoV genomes (3.5 x 10(13) and 1.7 x 10(15) genomes g(-1)) of any sample tested. The majority, 90.5% (19/21), of the samples tested positive for genogroup I NoV, and only 9.5% (2/21) of the samples tested positive for genogroup II. The high concentrations of NoV in plankton samples compared to water and oyster samples were unexpected and provide new insights into the presence and distribution of human NoV in the water environment.

Abstract
Noroviruses have received increased attention in recent years because their role as etiologic agents in acute gastroenteritis outbreaks is now clearly established. Our inability to grow them in cell culture and the lack of an animal model hinder the characterization of these viruses. More recently, molecular approaches have been used to study the genetic relationships that exist among them. In the present study, environmental samples from seawater, estuarine water, and effluents of sewage treatment plants were analyzed in order to evaluate the role of environmental surface contamination as a possible vehicle for transmission of norovirus genogroups I and II. Novel broad-range reverse transcription-PCR/nested assays targeting the region coding for the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase were developed, amplifying fragments of 516 bp and 687 bp in the nested reactions for genogroups II and I, respectively. The assays were evaluated and compared against widely used published assays. The newly designed assays provide long regions for high-confidence BLAST searches in public databases and therefore are useful diagnostic tools for molecular diagnosis and typing of human noroviruses in clinical and environmental samples, as well as for the study of molecular epidemiology and the evolution of these viruses.

Abstract
An atypically high level of norovirus activity was noticed in Hong Kong beginning in early May 2006. A study was carried out to investigate whether this was caused by a new norovirus variant. Epidemiological data including monthly positivity rates and the numbers of outbreaks per month from January to July 2006 were analyzed and compared to those from 2002 to 2005. In a comparison with the epidemiological data from 2001 to 2005, an atypical peak of norovirus-associated gastroenteritis outbreak was observed beginning in May 2006, concurring with a striking increase in norovirus activity. Most of the outbreaks (>60%) were located in homes for the elderly. Phylogenetic analysis for both RdRp and 5' capsid regions showed that this epidemic was caused by a new genogroup II/4 variant. This variant was genetically distinct from the predominant variants of 2002 and 2004 but was closely related to one of the 95/96-subset variants which caused an epidemic in Hong Kong in 2001, suggesting that the 95/96 subset may be starting to recirculate.

Abstract
Norovirus (NV) (formerly called Norwalk-like virus) is the most common etiological agent of acute viral gastroenteritis outbreaks worldwide. Recent reports have shown that two new GII.4 variants caused epidemics in Europe. To investigate if it is also the case in Hong Kong, a molecular epidemiological study was undertaken between January 2002 and June 2005. During this period, there was a substantial increase in acute cases of gastroenteritis caused by NV. Phylogenetic analysis showed that GII.2 and GII.4 are the major circulating genotypes. Two new GII.4 variants (variants C and D) were identified in 2002 and 2004, which quickly became the predominant strains. They were almost identical to the variants causing epidemics in Europe recently. Since geographically distinct areas were involved within a short period of time, it is possible that GII.4 has a particular propensity for causing pandemics.

Abstract
Norovirus (NoV) is one of the most common causes of acute gastroenteritis in children and adults. To study the prevalence and genetic variability of NoV in children with acute gastroenteritis in São Paulo State, Brazil, we examined 234 stool samples from children with or without gastroenteritis during a 5-year period (1995 to 1999). NoV RNA was detected by reverse transcription-PCR and confirmed by DNA sequence analysis. We used two different oligonucleotide primer sets targeting the 3' end of the RNA polymerase gene (region B), as well a partial capsid region at the 3' end of the VP1 gene (region D). A total of 78 (33.3%) of the samples tested positive for NoV, and in region B, of the 66 strains sequenced, 4 (6.1%) belonged to GI, 52 (78.7%) belonged to GII, and five samples (7.6%) contained a mixture of the GI and GII genotypes. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the majority (40 of 66 [60.6%]) of the strains belonged to genotype GII.4. The nucleotide sequence identity of three strains was lower than 77.9% compared to a region B reference sequence database but showed 85.3 to 88.8% identity with GII.2 Melksham strain in region D, indicating the circulation of a possible recombinant NoV strain. One sample (GII.3) was sequenced only in region D. In conclusion, we have a total of 67 sequenced strains. This is the first report that describes the predominance of GII.4 NoV strains in children visiting the ambulatory of different hospitals in São Paulo State, Brazil, and we show that mixtures of different strains can be found in individual samples, including some possible new recombinant strains.

Abstract
Noroviruses are a major cause of sporadic cases and epidemic outbreaks of gastroenteritis. The development of molecular diagnostic assays has led to an increased recognition of the significance of these viruses as causes of gastroenteritis in all age groups. This article reviews the epidemiology, clinical manifestations and pathogenesis of norovirus infection, and it describes the diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to this disease.

Abstract
Noroviruses (Norwalk-like viruses) are recognized as major causes of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. Outbreaks of norovirus gastroenteritis are often associated with consumption of oysters. In this study, oysters imported into Hong Kong from 11 countries over a 3-year period were screened by RT-PCR. Overall, 53 out of 507 (10.5%) samples were positive for norovirus-RNA, and a wide variety of strains were found. Two novel genetic clusters were detected, which could indicate novel human or animal norovirus strains. However, whether these two new clusters are of human or animal origin is not known. Thirteen outbreaks, in which oysters were implicated as the source of infection were investigated: Norovirus RNA sequences could be detected in oysters from six outbreaks, but only in one outbreak the strains isolated from patients and oysters matched (>98% homology). Therefore, RT-PCR was of use in detecting norovirus contamination of oysters implicated in an outbreak, but was less useful in demonstrating an actual molecular epidemiological link with human cases. It was shown that contamination by noroviruses could be demonstrated in oysters worldwide, and therefore oysters may serve as an important vehicle for introducing novel norovirus strains.

Abstract
Surveillance using molecular diagnostic methods developed in the past decade shows that human caliciviruses, particularly the Noroviruses, are the most important cause of pediatric acute gastroenteritis, next to rotavirus. Noroviruses also cause severe gastroenteritis in children, requiring hospitalization. The Sapovirus, a morphologically and genetically distinct genus of calicivirus, cause mainly milder endemic pediatric gastroenteritis. Noroviruses and Sapoviruses are genetically and antigenetically diverse, and multiple genetic types cocirculate in the same community. Human caliciviruses still cannot be cultivated in cell culture or in an animal model. Significant progress has been made in the past decade in the classification, diagnosis, and vaccine development, as well as in the recent discovery of Norovirus recognizing human histoblood group antigens as receptors. Major developments in this field are expected to occur in the near future.

Abstract
Noroviruses (Norwalk-like viruses (NLV)) are recognised as major causes of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. Numerous studies had been carried out on the molecular epidemiology of norovirus in outbreaks but relatively few on sporadic cases. In this study, the molecular epidemiology of noroviruses in sporadic and outbreak cases of acute gastroenteritis in Hong Kong was examined over a 12-month period from July 2001 to June 2002. Specimens from three groups of patients were used in this study. Nine hundred ninety-five specimens from patients enrolled in the Acute Diarrhoeal Diseases Surveillance Programme of the Department of Health, Hong Kong Government; 735 clinical specimens from hospital patients with acute gastroenteritis, and 122 specimens from 44 norovirus outbreaks. Ninety-two (9.2%) surveillance specimens were positive for norovirus RNA by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), compared to 123 (16.7%) clinical and 101 (82.8%) outbreak specimens. For the first 6 months of the study period, the predominant strain was the Bristol strain that belongs to genogroup II (GII). In the latter 6 months of the study, genogroup I (GI) and strains belonging to other clusters of GII were seen more commonly. The vast majority of strains belonging to the Bristol virus cluster were closely related to the 95/96-US subset that was associated with pandemic infection from 1995 onwards. This study clearly establishes the importance of norovirus as a cause of sporadic cases of acute gastroenteritis in all age groups in Hong Kong.
