Abstract
Mushroom cultivation presents a viable solution for utilizing agro-industrial byproducts as substrates for growth. This process enables the transformation of low-economic-value waste into nutritional foods. Enhancing the yield and quality of preharvest edible mushrooms, along with effectively preserving postharvest mushrooms, stands as a significant challenge in advancing the industry. Implementing pre- and postharvest strategies for Pleurotus ostreatus (Jacq.) P. Kumm (oyster mushroom) within a circular economy framework involves optimizing resource use, minimizing waste, and creating a sustainable and environmentally friendly production system. This review aimed to analyze the development and innovation of the different themes and trends by bibliometric analysis with a critical literature review. Furthermore, this review outlines the cultivation techniques for Pleurotus ostreatus, encompassing preharvest steps such as spawn production, substrate preparation, and the entire mushroom growth process, which includes substrate colonization, fruiting, harvesting, and, finally, the postharvest. While novel methodologies are being explored for maintaining quality and extending shelf-life, the evaluation of the environmental impact of the entire mushroom production to identify areas for improvement is needed. By integrating this knowledge, strategies can be developed for a more sustainable and circular approach to Pleurotus ostreatus mushroom cultivation, promoting environmental stewardship and long-term viability in this industry.

Abstract
This manuscript deals with cordycepin, an interesting secondary compound produced from entomopathogenic fungus, Cordyceps. It has attracted commercial interest due to its immense pharmacological importance beneficial to human health. In this study, the contents of cordycepin and its derivatives, like adenine and adenosine, were evaluated through solid-state fermentation using combinations of various grains as substrate. Treatment with grain combination numbers 2, 7, 8, and 9 exhibited higher cordycepin content (1.621, 1.929, 1.895, and 1.996 mg/g cordycepin, respectively) than control (rice). The grain combination number 7 exhibited significantly higher adenine content (700 mg/g) than the control and all other combinations. Treatments with grain combination numbers 2, 5, and 7 exhibited higher adenosine content (2.719, 2.938, and 3.392 mg/g, respectively); however, no significant increase in adenosine content was noted in any treatments. The biomass including fresh mycelium and fruit body was found higher in grain combination numbers 7 and 9, leading to enhanced cordycepin content. Overall, the increase in the fresh biomass significantly enhanced cordycepin accumulation. The level of cordycepin was recorded as higher than that of its derivatives, adenosine and adenine. The grain combination of rice, wheat, jowar, bajra, and sugarcane bagasse added to basal medium exhibited the highest cordycepin content and was found suitable for solid-state fermentation of Cordyceps militaris. To our understanding, the present study is the first to use combinations of cereals for the production of cordycepin from C. militaris.

Abstract
Tea, the major beverage worldwide, is one of the oldest commercial commodities traded from ancient times. Apart from many of its advantages, including health, socio-economic, climatic, and agro-ecological values, FAO has recognized that the tea value chain covering its growth in the field, processing and marketing, and finally, the hot cup at the user's hand needs to be made sustainable during all these stages. Tea generates a lot of waste in different forms in different stages of its growth and processing, and these wastes, if not managed properly, may cause environmental pollution. A planned utilization of these wastes as feedstocks for various processes can generate more income, create rural livelihood opportunities, help grow tea environmentally sustainable, avoid GHG emissions, and make a real contribution to SDGs. Thermochemical and biological conversion of tea wastes generates value-added products. This review provides an overview on the impacts of the tea wastes on the environment, tea waste valorization processes, and applications of value-added products. The application of value-added products for energy generation, wastewater treatment, soil conditioners, adsorbents, biofertilizers, food additives, dietary supplements, animal feed bioactive chemicals, dye, colourant, and phytochemicals has been reviewed. Further, the challenges in sustainable utilization of tea wastes and opportunities for commercial exploitation of value-added products from tea wastes have been reviewed.

Abstract
Different constituents of the cultivation substrate have significant effect on the yield and quality of edible mushrooms. The residue after the extraction of instant tea has exhibited to be biologically significant, and could be used as a substrate for cultivation. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of tea extraction residue (TER) on button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) cultivation, as an ingredient in the substrate, and assess the growth status, nutritional values, and sensory characteristics of fruiting body. The results showed that the strains could grow well on the cultivated substrate with 20% addition of TER. The total amount of hydrolyzed amino acids in the fruiting bodies of three TER-based groups (TER accounted for 10%, 20%, and 37.5%, respectively) was higher than that of the control group, and the total amount of essential amino acids was increased by 33.33%, 22.47%, and 9.92% compared with the control group, respectively. In addition, the results of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) revealed that the addition of TER to the cultivation of substrate significantly enhanced the content of typical mushroom-flavor compounds in button mushroom, such as 1-octen-3-ol, 3-octanol, and 1-octen-3-one. It can be concluded that TER may be an ideal choice for the substrate in commercial cultivation of button mushroom.

Abstract
Mushrooms are capable of bioconverting organic residues into food. Understanding the relationship between high-quality yields and substrate biomass from these residues is critical for mushroom farms when choosing new strains. The objective of this exploratory study was, therefore, to analyze whether exotic mushrooms, namely, Pleurotus eryngii, Flammulina velutipes, and Agrocybe aegerita, could biologically convert the substrate into edible mushrooms as effectively as Lentinula edodes (baseline). Five experiments were carried out. Biological efficiency, biodegradability coefficient, mass balance and chemical characterization of the substrate were evaluated. Strategically hydrating the sawdust enabled L. edodes to achieve the greatest biodegradability and biological efficiency of 0.5 and 94.2 kg dt−1, respectively. The values for L. edodes on wheat straw without hydration were 0.2 and 68.8 kg dt−1, respectively. From 1000 kg of fresh substrate, P. eryngii produced 150.1 kg of edible mushrooms, making it technically competitive with L. edodes on wheat straw (195.9 kg). Hence, P. eryngii was the most reliable option for scaling among the exotic mushrooms. The analytical insights from our study provide further knowledge to advance the field’s prominence in high-throughput mushroom-producing systems, particularly for exotic mushrooms.

Abstract
Tea plant (Camellia sinensis) is an important economic beverage crop. Drought stress seriously affects the growth and development of tea plant and the accumulation of metabolites, as well as the production, processing, yield and quality of tea. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the reaction mechanism of tea plant under drought conditions and find efficient control methods. Based on transcriptome sequencing technology, this study studied the difference of metabolic level between sexual and asexual tea plants under drought stress. In this study, there were multiple levels of up-regulation and down-regulation of differential genes related to cell composition, molecular function and biological processes. Transcriptomic data show that the metabolism of tea plants with different propagation modes of QC and ZZ is different under drought conditions. In the expression difference statistics, it can be seen that the differential genes of QC are significantly more than ZZ; GO enrichment analysis also found that although differential genes in biological process are mainly enriched in the three pathways of metabolic, single organism process and cellular process, cellular component is mainly enriched in cell, cell part, membrane, and molecular function, and binding, catalytic activity, and transporter activity; the enrichment order of differential genes in these pathways is different in QC and ZZ. This difference is caused by the way of reproduction. The further study of these differential genes will lay a foundation for the cultivation methods and biotechnology breeding to improve the quality of tea.

Abstract
To reduce the burning of lemon basil straw (LBS)—the byproduct of basil seed production—we propose utilizing LBS as a replacement substrate for mushroom cultivation. LBS can stimulate both mycelial growth and percentage biological efficiency; however, the rigidity of this material limits particle size reduction. In this work, aqueous extractions were facilely performed without using either hazardous chemicals or complex procedures to valorize LBS as a stimulator for gray oyster mushroom cultivation. An aqueous extraction at solid-to-liquid of 50 g/L was employed. The macerated-LBS and decocted-LBS extracts were tested for mycelial growth in potato dextrose agar and sorghum grains. Following this, both aqueous extracts were applied as a wetting agent in cylindrical baglog cultivation to estimate mycelial growth, biological efficiency, and productivity. It was found that LBS extracts insignificantly enhanced the mycelia growth rate on all media, while the diluted LBS (1:1 v/v) extracts improved 1.5-fold of percentage biological efficiency. Gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer results indicated 9-octadecaenamide is a major component in LBS aqueous extract. Results demonstrated that the LBS extract is a good stimulator for the production of Pleurotus mushroom.

Abstract
Spent tea leaves (STL) are generated after the extraction of liquor from processed tea leaves and are regarded as an underutilized waste. STL are rich in essential amino acids, ω-6 and ω-3 fatty acids, alkaloids (theobromine and caffeine), polyphenols (catechin, theaflavins and rutin) and minerals (Ca, P, K, Mg, Mn) that could be utilized for the production of industrially important products. Vermicomposting, anaerobic digestion, silage preparation and fermentation are currently used as low cost methods for the bioconversion of STL to a usable form. Structural, morphological and chemical modification of STL after suitable bioconversion enables its application in the development of biopolymers, biofuels, catechin derivatives, biochar, absorbents for dye, and for removal of Cd, Hg, Cr(IV), As(V) and aspirin. This review discusses the composition, characterization, bioconversion and value added product generation from STL while highlighting prospective applications of STL in developing battery electrodes, nanocatalysts, insulation materials and edible bioactive peptides.

Abstract
The global challenge of feeding an ever-increasing world population is leading scientists' attention towards nutritious and sustainable foods whose production should have low impacts on environment, economy and society. In case the input feedstock can be waste nutrients, the label of such productions becomes even greener. Nutrients circularity is nowadays an important circular economy practice. This mini-review focuses on the valorisation of food waste as precious biomass to grow new food and feed. In particular, three functional edibles are discussed in the present paper: mushrooms, microalgae and insects. These foods are part of people diets since ages in certain areas of the world and the original aspect of their cultivation and breeding found on waste nutrients recovery is here reviewed. Proofs of such food waste biorefinery viability are already given by several researches featuring the main traits of a suitable growing medium: optimal pool of nutrients and optimal pH. However, lot of work still needs to be done in order to assess the optimal growth and cultivation conditions and the health security of the harvested/bred edibles. A SWOT factors analysis was performed.

Abstract
This study evaluated the ability of Aspergillus niger and Trichoderma koningii to improve the quality of tea dregs (TDs) through solid-state fermentation as well as the value of the fermented tea dregs (FTDs) produced for use as bio-feed additives. After fermentation, FTDs differed in color and structure. Fermentation with A. niger and T. koningii increased the contents of crude protein, crude fiber, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber of TDs. Compared to the unfermented group, the contents of reducing sugar, total flavonoids, total polyphenols, and theasaponins were increased in A. niger FTDs, while in T. koningii FTDs caffeine was completely degraded, the theasaponins were lower, and the contents of reducing sugar and caffeine higher. Regarding free amino acids, A. niger FTDs had the highest content of total amino acids, total essential amino acids, total non-essential amino acids, total aromatic amino acids, total branched-chain amino acids, and total non-protein amino acids, and all types of essential amino acids, followed by T. koningii FTDs and the control TDs. Fungal fermentation had similar effects on the content of various hydrolytic amino acids as those on above free amino acids, and increased the content of bitter and umami components. The composition of essential amino acids of TDs or FTDs was similar to that of the standard model, except for sulfur-containing amino acids and isoleucine. Solid-state fermentation with A. niger and T. koningii effectively improved the nutritional value of TDs, increased the contents of functional substances, and improved the flavor of TDs. This study demonstrated a feasible approach to utilize TDs that not only increases animal feed resources, but also reduces the production of resource waste and pollution.

Abstract
Background Herbal tea residue (HTR) is generally considered to be the waste of herbal tea beverage production while it still retains rich nutrients and active substances. The main aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of fermentation technology on improving the quality of HTRs, and focus on the fermented HTR-induced alleviation of summer heat stress in fattening cattle. Results In this study, the waste HTR was fermented and then fed to a total of 45 fattening cattle that were divided into 3 groups (fermented HTR replaced 0, 15, 30% of the forage component of the diet), and the feeding experiment was lasted for 40 days. The physiological indexes, growth performance and fecal microbiota of fattening cattle were evaluated and results showed that fermented HTR could effectively reduce the respiratory rate and rectal temperature of fattening cattle under heat stress, increase the daily feed intake and daily gain, and improve the antioxidant content and blood immune index. In addition, we studied the fecal microbiota composition of 6 fattening cattle in control and 30% HTR substitution groups and found fermented HTR significantly changed the composition of fecal microbiota and increased microbial diversity, and correlation analysis suggested that the bacteria were closely related to fecal SCFA levels of fattening cattle under heat stress. Conclusions In this study, fermented HTR replaced 30% of the forage component of the diet that can change the intestine microorganisms, maintain health and alleviate the heat stress of fattening cattle. Abstract
The increasing production of essential oils has generated a significant amount of vegetal waste that must be discarded, increasing costs for farmers. In this context, fungi, due to their ability to recycle lignocellulosic matter, may be used to turn this waste into new products, thus generating additional income for essential oil producers. The objectives of our work, within the framework of the European ALCOTRA project FINNOVER, were two-fold. The first was to cultivate Pleurotus ostreatus on solid waste of lavender used for essential oil production. The second was to provide, at the same time, new products that can increase the income of small and medium farms in the Ligurian Italian Riviera. This paper presents two pilot tests in which P. ostreatus was grown on substrates with five different concentrations of lavender waste, ranging from 0 to 100% (w/w). Basidiomata grown on all the substrates and their biochemical profiles were characterized using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The biochemical analysis of mushrooms proved the presence of molecules with antioxidant and potential pharmacological properties, in particular in mushrooms grown on lavender-enriched substrates. The results open the possibility of producing mushrooms classified as a novel food. Furthermore, the results encourage further experiments aimed at investigating how different substrates positively affect the metabolomics of mushrooms.

Abstract
A total of 16 biochar adsorbents were produced from four types of spent mushroom substrates to investigate the effect of pyrolysis temperature and raw material composition on the Cu(II) adsorption performance of the resulting biochars. It was determined that the pyrolysis temperature and substrate composition markedly influenced the thermal stability, the degree of carbonization, surface functional group content, and structural morphology of the biochars, but did not affect the adsorption isotherms or kinetics. Optimal results were obtained with an initial pH of 5, adsorbent dosage of 1 g/L, Cu(II) concentration of 50 mg/L, and temperature of 25 °C. The four best-performing biochars conformed to the Langmuir isotherm model and followed pseudo-second-order kinetics with maximum Cu(II) adsorption between 52.6 and 65.6 mg/g. Precipitation was the dominant mechanism for Cu(II) adsorption onto Lentinus edodes spent substrate-derived biochar pyrolyzed at 600 °C (LESS600), whereas complexation with surface functional groups was the prominent mechanism of Cu(II) removal by Auricularia auricula spent substrate-derived biochar pyrolyzed at 500 °C (AASS500). The Flammulina velutipes and Pleurotus ostreatus spent substrate-derived biochars pyrolyzed at 600 °C (FVSS600 and POSS600, respectively) removed Cu(II) ions using both precipitation and Cu2+-π complexation interactions. The findings indicate that biochar derived from spent mushroom substrates containing abundant lignin and pyrolyzed at high temperatures (500 or 600 °C) demonstrate effective Cu(II) removal because of the various physico-chemical properties discussed herein.

Abstract
Hydrophobins are small secreted proteins with important physiological functions and potential applications. Here, Pleurotus ostreatus hydrophobin genes were systematically analyzed: they were characterized, classified, and their expression profiles and gene functions were explored. In total, 40 P. ostreatus hydrophobin genes were found and showed genetic diversity, of which 15 were newly identified. The hydrophobin protein sequences were diverse but all contained eight cysteine residues with a conserved spacing pattern, and 33 of them were class I hydrophobins. The expression profile analyses showed that Vmh3 and Hydph20 were abundant in monokaryotic and dikaryotic mycelia, whereas Hydph17, Po.hyd16, Hydph8 were specifically expressed in monokaryotic mycelia and Po.hyd10 were specific in dikaryotic mycelia. Furthermore, Vmh3, Hydph20, Po.hyd7, and Po.hyd10 were abundant when dikaryotic mycelia cultivated on PDA, which are different from on substrate (Vmh2, Vmh3, Hydph7, Po.hyd3, Po.hyd7, Po.hyd9); Hydph12, POH1, and Po.hyd4 can be induced by natural light and cold stimulation during development from mycelia to primordia; Vmh3, FBH1, Hydph12, Po.hyd1-Po.hyd5, and Po.hyd8 were highly expressed in primordia and young fruiting bodies; Hydph12, Po.hyd1, Po.hyd4, and Po.hyd5 were specifically expressed in pilei. In addition, RNAi transformants of FBH1 exhibited slower growth rates and had fewer primordia and fruiting bodies, which suggests FBH1 affects the growth rate and primordia formation of P. ostreatus. Therefore, P. ostreatus hydrophobin genes belong to a large family and are temporally and spatially expressed to meet the developmental needs of mushroom.

Abstract
To valorize tea waste (TW), catalytic pyrolysis was done as a practical measure for recovering energy as a form of syngas. Considering CO2 as a reactive gas medium in place of conventional pyrolysis gas, a sustainable pyrolysis platform was established. In addition, mechanistic effectiveness of CO2 on TW pyrolysis was examined. In the presence of CO2, homogeneous reaction with volatile organic compounds (VOCs) derived from TW pyrolysis contributed to CO formation. To enhance the formation of syngas at low pyrolysis temperature, catalytic pyrolysis over a Ni/SiO2 was investigated. The synergistic effects of Ni/SiO2 catalyst and CO2 promoted thermal cracking of VOCs and further homogeneous reaction with CO2, thereby resulting in the substantial enhancement (28 times more) of H2 and CO production than non-catalytic pyrolysis. It was also confirmed that CO2 could be considered a reactive gas medium to produce biochar (34-35 wt.% yield), having competitive porosity and surface area, in comparison to that from pyrolysis in N2. Therefore, CO2 can be employed to build a sustainable waste conversion platform for energy and biochar production through pyrolysis instead of using N2.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In this study, renewable tea waste hydrolysate was used as a sole carbon source for carotenoids and lipid production. A novel Rhodosporidium toruloides mutant strain, RM18, was isolated through atmospheric and room-temperature plasma mutagenesis and continuous domestication in tea waste hydrolysate from R. toruloides ACCC20341. RESULTS RM18 produced a larger biomass and more carotenoids and α-linolenic acid compared with the control strain cultured in tea waste hydrolysate. The highest yields of torularhodin (481.92 μg/g DCW) and torulene (501 μg/g DCW) from RM18 cultured in tea waste hydrolysate were 12.86- and 1.5-fold higher, respectively, than that of the control strain. In addition, α-linolenic acid production from RM18 in TWH accounted for 5.5% of total lipids, which was 1.58 times more than that of the control strain. Transcriptomic profiling indicated that enhanced central metabolism and terpene biosynthesis led to improved carotenoids production, whereas aromatic amino acid synthesis and DNA damage checkpoint and sensing were probably relevant to tea waste hydrolysate tolerance. CONCLUSION Tea waste is suitable for the hydrolysis of microbial cell culture mediums. The R. toruloides mutant RM18 showed considerable carotenoids and lipid production cultured in tea waste hydrolysate, which makes it viable for industrial applications.

Abstract
Polypores are diverse macrofungi that have been extensively studied for their lignocellulolytic enzyme production capabilities. Currently, these enzymes are being used for many industrial purposes. However, the high cost associated with their production is the main barrier to their broader application. This work aimed to study the optimal medium and conditions for endoglucanase production using solid state fermentation. Seven polypore strains were used for endoglucanase activity screening. The fermentation experiments were carried out in 250 ml Erlenmeyer flasks with green tea waste as a substrate. Notably, Microporus xanthopus strain KA038 showed the best level of activity (38.62 IU/gds). Various parameters such as moisture content, nitrogen source, initial pH value, inoculum size and incubation time were considered to determine the optimal conditions for endoglucanase production. The optimal medium consisted of green tea leaves as a carbon source, beef extract as an organic nitrogen source, NH4H2PO4 as an inorganic nitrogen source, pH 7.0 and an incubation temperature at 30°C for 4 days resulted in a high enzyme yield with M. xanthopus strain KA038 (81.8 IU/gds).This article has an associated First Person interview with the first author of the paper.

Abstract
Tea plant is an important economic crop and is vulnerable to drought. A good understanding of tea drought tolerance mechanisms is required for breeding robust drought tolerant tea varieties. Previous studies showed mesophyll cells' ability to maintain K+ is associated with its stress tolerance. Here, in this study, 12 tea varieties were used to investigate the role of mesophyll K+ retention ability towards tea drought stress tolerance. A strong and negative correlation (R2 = 0.8239, P < 0.001) was found between PEG (mimic drought stress)-induced K+ efflux from tea mesophyll cells and overall drought tolerance in 12 tea varieties. In agreement with this, a significantly higher retained leaf K+ content was found in drought tolerant than the sensitive tea varieties. Furthermore, exogenous applied K+ (5 mM) significantly alleviated drought-induced symptom in tea plants, further supporting our finding that mesophyll K+ retention is an important component for drought tolerance mechanisms in tea plants. Moreover, pharmacological experiments showed that the contribution of K+ outward rectifying channels and non-selective cation channels in controlling PEG-induced K+ efflux from mesophylls cells are varied between drought tolerant and sensitive tea varieties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Concentrations of 16 rare earth elements (REEs) and two actinides were determined for the first time both in cultivated mushrooms and in their production substrates by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy. Moreover, the effect of REEs on cultivation parameters and composition of the final product was assessed, together with their potential use for authentication purposes. RESULTS The concentrations of REEs varied greatly among seven cultivation substrates and correlated with measurements in Cyclocybe cylindracea mushrooms; no such correlation was established in Pleurotus ostreatus. Reduction of hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin in substrates during P. ostreatus cultivation was positively correlated with REE concentrations, which also affected the production performance depending on the species examined. In all cases, a negative correlation was established between bioconcentration factors (BCF) in mushrooms and REE content in substrates, while the effect of substrate composition on BCF values varied according to the element studied. The estimated daily intake values of REEs through mushroom consumption was at much lower levels than those reported as potentially harmful for human health. CONCLUSION The content of REEs in cultivation substrates and in mushrooms revealed that the bioaccumulation of elements differed in each fungus. The nature/origin of substrates seemed to affect the concentration of REEs in mushrooms to a considerable extent. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In commercial production of Cordyceps militaris (a famous Chinese medicine), cereal grains are usually utilized as cultivation substrates. This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of agricultural wastes as substitute materials in the low-cost production of C. militaris. Cottonseed shells (CS), corn cob particles (CCP), Italian poplar sawdusts (IPS) and substrates spent by Flammulina velutipes (SS) were employed to cultivate C. militaris, using rice medium as control. RESULTS CS and CCP were suitable for fruit body formation of C. militaris, with yields of 22 and 20 g per bottle respectively. Fruit bodies grown on CCP showed the highest levels of cordycepin and adenosine, up to 9.45 and 5.86 mg g-1 respectively. The content of d-mannitol in fruit bodies obtained on CS was 120 mg g-1 (80% of the control group), followed by that on CCP, 100 mg g-1 . Fruit bodies cultivated on CCP displayed a high crude polysaccharide level of 26.9 mg g-1 , which was the closest to that of the control group (34.5 mg g-1 ). CONCLUSION CS and CCP are effective substrates for the production of fruit bodies and bioactive compounds by C. militaris. This study provides a new approach to decreasing the cost of C. militaris cultivation and dealing with these agricultural wastes. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
The effects of selenium enrichment on the biological efficiency, phenolic compounds, amino acid profile, antioxidant capacity, and cellular antioxidant activity (CAA) were evaluated in Pleurotus ostreatus fruiting bodies (FB) harvested during three sequential flushes. Sodium selenate was used to reach selenium content of 17.5 or 5.8 mg/kg in the sorghum straw substrate. Biological efficiency and total selenium content increased. One of the main differences among treatments was in ergothioneine content, an indicator of oxidative stress that was positively related with valine and isoleucine contents and negatively related to leucine and phenylalanine. Besides ergothioneine, nucleosides derived from adenine and uracyl were the major peaks observed in all treatments, and coumaric and ferulic acids were found in the bound phenolics extract. Selenium enrichment also affected the antioxidant capacity, and particularly the methanolic extract obtained from the second flush of FB cultivated in selenium-enriched substrate (17.5 mg/kg) had the best CAA.
