Abstract
The use of natural ingredients to preserve the quality of fresh fruits is a promising approach to healthier products and a more sustainable industry. The present study was carried out to assess the effect of lactic acid (LA) and guava leaf extract (GLE) as natural preservatives on the quality parameters of Khalal Barhi dates. Physicochemical properties, antioxidant activity, color parameters, firmness, sensory properties, and yeast and mold counts of date fruits were evaluated during five weeks of storage at 4 ± 1 °C. The bioactive compounds in GLE were estimated by HPLC, which exhibited that GLE contains significant amounts of bioactive compounds, mainly, phenolics and flavonoids. With prolonged storage, the moisture content decreased, while the total soluble solids (TSS) increased in all samples. Similarly, a slight decrease in the pH with a concomitant increase in titratable acidity (TA) was observed throughout the storage. Generally, the samples treated with natural preservatives revealed lower changes in moisture content, TSS, pH, and TA than the control. The results exhibited decreased total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity for all samples with extended storage. The GLE and LA + GLE treatments significantly (p < 0.05) increased TPC and antioxidant activity on day 0 and preserved higher values of both during storage. Additionally, a decrease in the L* and b* values with an increase in the a* values of all samples was observed with advancement of storage. The LA + GLE treatment minimized the changes in color parameters and maintained higher firmness values during storage. Similarly, the sensory properties of all samples decreased with prolonged storage, but insignificant (p > 0.05) differences were found among the samples. Dipping treatments inhibited microbial growth over time, with the lowest yeast and mold counts achieved by the LA + GLE treatment. It can be concluded that the LA + GLE treatment has a protective effect on Khalal Barhi dates by minimizing post-harvest changes and decreasing the microbial load.

Abstract
Spectroscopic techniques, electrochemical methods, nanozymes, computer vision, and modified chromatographic techniques are the emerging techniques for determining the quality and safety parameters (e.g., physical, chemical, microbiological, and classified parameters, as well as inorganic and organic contaminants) of tea products (such as fresh tea leaves, commercial tea, tea beverage, tea powder, and tea bakery products) effectively. By simplifying the sample preparation, speeding up the detection process, reducing the interference of other substances contained in the sample, and improving the sensitivity and accuracy of the current standard techniques, the abovementioned emerging techniques achieve rapid, cost-effective, and nondestructive or slightly destructive determination of tea products, with some of them providing real-time detection results. Applying these emerging techniques in the whole industry of tea product processing, right from the picking of fresh tea leaves, fermentation of tea leaves, to the sensory evaluation of commercial tea, as well as developing portable devices for real-time and on-site determination of classified and safety parameters (e.g., the geographical origin, grade, and content of contaminants) will not only eliminate the strong dependence on professionals but also help mechanize the production of tea products, which deserves further research. Conducting a review on the application of spectroscopic techniques, electrochemical methods, nanozymes, computer vision, and modifications of chromatographic techniques for quality and safety determination of tea products may serve as guide for other types of foods and beverages, offering potential techniques for their detection and evaluation, which would promote the development of the food industry.

Abstract
On-line elution based TLC-MS is now a well-established technique, but the quality of the data obtained can sometimes be hampered by a severe spectral background or by strong ion suppression, especially when silica gel plates are used in combination with an acidic modifier in the developing solvent. We solved this issue simply and efficiently using two pre-developments of the plates, firstly with methanol-formic acid (10:1, v/v) and secondly with acetonitrile-methanol (2:1, v/v). This solution resulted in significant improvement in the sensitivity of HPTLC-MS methods. The applicability of this approach was proven on analysis of flavan-3-ols and proanthocyanidins in crude extracts of Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica Houtt.) rhizomes. Separations on HPTLC silica gel and HPTLC silica gel MS grade plates using developing solvents toluene-acetone-formic acid (3:3:1, 6:6:1, 3:6:1, v/v) and dichloromethane-acetone-formic acid (1:1:0.1, v/v) were followed by post-chromatographic derivatization with 4-dimethylaminocinnamaldehyde (DMACA) detection reagent. Examination of the stability of the analytes on the start confirmed that the plates should be developed immediately after the application of standards and sample test solutions. In a five hours stability testing after development we discovered an unexpected phenomenon of enhanced absorption at 280nm. However, based on an experiment with post-chromatographic derivatization with DMACA detection reagent, the analytes were proven to be sufficiently stable in the time frame of an HPTLC-MS analysis. This was important for development of the first HPTLC-MS and HPTLC-MSn methods for identification of flavan-3-ols and B-type proanthocyanidins from monomers up to decamers. For the first time, based on this research methodology, trimers, trimer gallates, tetramer gallates, pentamers, pentamer gallates, hexamers, hexamer gallates, heptamers, octamers, nonamers and decamers were tentatively identified in Japanese knotweed rhizomes. Additionally, all developed HPTLC-MS methods have enabled simultaneous identification of stilbenes (resveratrol, piceatannol hexoside, piceid) and anthraquinones (emodin, emodin-O-hexoside, emodin-O-(acetyl)-hexoside and emodin-O-(6'-O-malonyl)-hexoside).

Abstract
Chemical investigation of Cicer microphyllum resulted in the isolation and characterization of eight natural products viz. Stigmasterol, Oleanolic acid-3-acetate, Oleanolic acid, Biochanin A, Genistein, Pratensein, Chrysoeriol, and Luteolin. Herein, we report a novel, accurate, and cost-effective high-performance thin-layer chromatography method for the simultaneous quantification of the isolated natural products on silica-gel 60F254 plates using the solvent system n-hexane/ethyl acetate/formic acid (9.0:6.5:0.8, v/v/v). Natural products were quantified after postchromatographic derivatization with ceric ammonium sulfate. The method was validated as per the International Conference on Harmonization guidelines. All calibration curves showed a good linear relationship (r > 0.9943) within the test range. Precision was assessed by intra- and interday tests with relative standard deviations <1.82%, accuracy validation recovery 98.38-99.57% with relative standard deviations <1.00%. On quantification, Pratensein was a major constituent (0.921%). The screening for cytotoxic activity using a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay resulted into identification of Luteolin as potent molecule with IC50 3.5 and 25.6 μg/mL against murine melanoma and human epidermoid carcinoma cell lines, respectively.

Abstract
Green tea (Camellia sinensis) preparations are among the top selling products in the United States dietary supplements market. Numerous manufacturers claim different levels of specific catechin markers in their products while many others use total phenolic concentration instead, or not at all. Limited quality control results have been published for green tea dietary supplements over the past seven years. Thus, the goal of this work was to correlate determined levels of phenolics, catechins, and caffeine with manufacturer label claims for selected dietary supplement products (26 total) purchased in the United States. The Folin-Ciocalteu (FC) method was used to determine the total phenolic content while reversed-phase (RP) HPLC was used to quantify the major catechins: epicatechin (EC), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG). The developed HPLC method was validated for accuracy and precision. It utilized a C8 column with gradient elution of acetonitrile in 0.1% aqueous formic acid over 11 min total run time. Peak detection was performed at 280 nm. Caffeine was also included in the HPLC method as another non-phenolic alkaloid marker commonly found in green tea. Both methods showed a good correlation between the content of catechins and polyphenolic compounds in the selected products. The ranges of total catechins and polyphenol concentrations were 3.8-70.2% and 3.6-95.8%, respectively, while that of caffeine was 0.8-11.2%. The selected products displayed a wide range of marker levels. A lack of conformity in disclosing the actual levels of marker compounds was also noticed in the labeling of many products.

Abstract
Rapid evolution of influenza RNA virus has resulted in limitation of vaccine effectiveness, increased emergence of drug-resistant viruses and occurrence of pandemics. A new effective antiviral is therefore needed for control of the highly mutative influenza virus. Teas prepared by the infusion method were tested for their anti-influenza activity against clinical influenza A (H1N1) isolates by a 19-h influenza growth inhibition assay with ST6Gal I-expressing MDCK cells (AX4 cells) using fluorogenic quantification and chromogenic visualization. Guava tea markedly inhibited the growth of A/Narita/1/2009 (amantadine-resistant pandemic 2009 strain) at an IC(50) of 0.05% and the growth of A/Yamaguchi/20/06 (sensitive strain) and A/Kitakyushu/10/06 (oseltamivir-resistant strain) at similar IC(50) values ranging from 0.24% to 0.42% in AX4 cells, being 3.4- to 5.4-fold more potent than green tea (IC(50) values: 0.27% for the 2009 pandemic strain and 0.91% to 1.44% for the seasonal strains). In contrast to both teas, oseltamivir carboxylate (OC) demonstrated high potency against the growth of A/Narita/1/09 (IC(50) of 3.83nM) and A/Yamaguchi/20/06 (IC(50) of 11.57nM) but not against that of A/Kitakyushu/10/06 bearing a His274-to-Tyr substitution (IC(50) of 15.97μM). Immunofluorescence analysis under a confocal microscope indicated that both teas inhibited the most susceptible A/Narita/1/2009 virus at the initial stage of virus infection. This is consistent with results of direct inhibition assays showing that both teas inhibited viral hemagglutination at concentrations comparable to their growth inhibition concentrations but inhibited sialidase activity at about 8-times higher concentrations. Guava tea shows promise to be efficacious for control of epidemic and pandemic influenza viruses including oseltamivir-resistant strains, and its broad target blockage makes it less likely to lead to emergence of viral resistance.
