Abstract
In the present work vacuum (Vac) and multiple cumulative trapping (MCT) headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) were evaluated as alternative or combined techniques for the volatile profiling. A higher extraction performance for semi-volatiles was shown by all three techniques. Synergic combination of Vac and MCT showed up to 5-times extraction power for less volatile compounds. The hyphenation of said techniques with comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × GC) enabled a comprehensive analysis of the volatilome. Firstly, 18 targeted quality markers, previously defined by means of classical HS-SPME, were explored for their ability to classify commercial categories. The applicability of such markers proved to be limited with the alternative sampling techniques. An untargeted approach enables the selection of specific features for each technique showing a better classification capacity of the commercial categories. No misclassifications were observed, except for one extra virgin olive oil classified as virgin olive oil in 3 × 10 min Vac-MCT-HS-SPME.

Abstract
Some truffles are expensive and, therefore, are prone to food fraud. A particular problem is the differentiation of high-priced Tuber magnatum truffles from cheaper Tuber borchii truffles, both of which are white truffles with similar morphological characteristics. Using an untargeted approach, the volatiles isolated from samples of both species were screened for potential marker compounds by comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS) and statistical analysis of the obtained semiquantitative data. Results suggested bis(methylsulfanyl)methane and furan-2(5H)-one as compounds characterizing T. magnatum and T. borchii, respectively. Exact quantitation of both volatiles by conventional one-dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in combination with stable isotopologues of the target compounds as internal standards confirmed both as marker compounds. The method is suitable to be used in the routine analysis for the objective species differentiation of T. magnatum and T. borchii.

Abstract
Unsaturated aliphatic aldehyde oxidation plays a significant role in the deep oxidation of fatty acids to produce volatile chemicals. Exposing the oxidation process of unsaturated aliphatic aldehydes is crucial to completely comprehend how food flavor forms. In this study, thermal desorption cryo-trapping in conjunction with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to examine the volatile profile of (E)-4-decenal during heating, and 32 volatile compounds in all were detected and identified. Meanwhile, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used, and 43 reactions were obtained in the 24 pathways, which were summarized into the peroxide reaction mechanism (ROOH), the peroxyl radical reaction mechanism (ROO·) and the alkoxy radical reaction mechanism (RO·). Moreover, the priority of these three oxidative mechanisms was the RO· mechanism > ROOH mechanism > ROO· mechanism. Furthermore, the DFT results and experimental results agreed well, and the oxidative mechanism of (E)-4-decenal was finally illuminated.

Abstract
The reliability of analytical results is critical and indispensable when applied in regulated environments such as the pharmaceutical industry. Therefore, analytical workflows must be validated. However, validation guidelines are often designed for quantitative targeted analysis and rarely apply to qualitative untargeted approaches. In this study, we employ a risk assessment approach to identify critical parameters which might influence the qualitative results derived by online derivatisation - comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled to a high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometer (GC × GC-HR-ToF-MS) for the analysis of the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) sodium bituminosulfonate (SBS). To show the complexity and feasibility of such an approach, we focus on investigating three potential risk factors: sample preparation, vapourability, and the thermal stability of sulfonates. Through the individual evaluation of these potential risk factors due to the application of sample preparation approaches and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), we demonstrate the high derivatisation efficiency and repeatability of the online derivatisation method and confirm the absence of derivatisation-induced side reactions. In addition, we also show the potential thermal instability of an incompletely derivatised API. To address the limitation of these individual assessments, we applied a holistic evaluation step with negative electrospray ionisation Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (ESI( -) FT-ICR MS) as an orthogonal technique. This confirms that most of the API is detected via the presented GC-based method. Thereby, we demonstrated the practical feasibility of the risk assessment-based approach to ensure the validity of the qualitative data for a complex untargeted method.

Abstract
Mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOH) contain a wide structural diversity of molecules, for which the reference method of analysis is the online coupled liquid chromatography-gas chromatography with flame ionization detection (LC-GC-FID). These compounds are very heterogeneous from a toxicological viewpoint, and an accurate risk assessment when dealing with a MOH contamination can only be performed if sufficient information is available on the types of structures present (i.e., number of carbons, degree of alkylation, number of aromatic rings). Unfortunately, the separation performances of the current LC-GC-FID method are insufficient for such characterization, not even mentioning the possible coelution of interfering compounds which additionally hinder MOH determination. Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × GC), while mostly used for confirmation purposes in the past, starts to prove its relevance for overcoming the weaknesses of the LC-GC method and reaching even better the analytical requirements defined in the latest EFSA opinion. The present paper therefore aims at highlighting how GC × GC has contributed to the understanding of the MOH topic, how it has developed to meet the requirements of MOH determination, and how it could play a role in the field for overcoming many of the current analytical and toxicological challenges related to the topic.

Abstract
In the present work, the potential benefit of using multi-cumulative trapping headspace extraction was explored by comparing the results using solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coated with divinylbenzene/carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane and a probe-like tool coated with polydimethylsiloxane. The efficiency of a single 30-min extraction, already explored in previous work, was compared with that of multiple shorter extractions. We evaluated three different conditions, i.e., three repeated extractions for 10 min each from different sample vials (for both the probe-like tool and SPME) or from the same vial (for SPME) containing brewed coffee. The entire study was performed using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The two-dimensional plots were aligned and integrated using a tile-sum approach before any statistical analysis. A detailed comparison of all the tested conditions was performed on a set of 25 targeted compounds. Although a single 30-min extraction using the probe-like tool provided a significantly higher compound intensity than SPME single extraction, the use of multiple shorter extractions with SPME showed similar results. However, multiple extractions with the probe-like tool showed a greater increase in the number of extracted compounds. Furthermore, an untargeted cross-sample comparison was performed to evaluate the ability of the two tested tools and the different extraction procedures in differentiating between espresso-brewed coffee samples obtained from capsules made of different packaging materials (i.e., compostable capsules, aluminum capsules, aluminum multilayer pack). The highest explained variance was obtained using the probe-like tool and multiple extractions (91.6% compared to 83.9% of the single extraction); nevertheless, SPME multiple extractions showed similar results with 88.3% of variance explained.

Abstract
According to previous published works, precise modeling of the first dimensional (1D) peak in comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × GC) requires at least 3 modulated sub-peaks (MSP). This requirement is sometimes difficult to meet, e.g., in case of undersampling modulation. In the present work, the feasibility of modeling of the 1D peak with only 2 MSP was demonstrated. The effects of modulation phase (ϕ), modulation period (PM), the peak width (1σ), and the peak shape of the original 1D peak on the accuracy of the proposed method were explored. When employing PM ranging from 6 s ~ 3 s to modulate original peaks with 1σ = 1.2 s ~ 0.6 s, the maximal error of the modeled 1tR is 1.08 s, which is far less than the error generated by employing the largest MSP to estimate the 1tR. The deviation of modeled 1tR increases with the increase of peak shape distortion, and this deviation is ≤ 0.67 s when tailing factor (Tf) in the range of 0.8 to 1.5. The application of the proposed method was demonstrated by assisting identification of a monoterpene in Myrrh sample. The proposed approach could improve the accuracy in calculation of 1tR or 1I and enhance the reliability of compound identification in GC × GC analysis with undersampling modulation.

Abstract
Broa is a Portuguese maize bread with characteristic sensory attributes that can only be achieved using traditional maize varieties. This study intends to disclose the volatile compounds that are mainly associated with the baking process of broas, which can be important contributors to their aroma. Twelve broas were prepared from twelve maize flours (eleven traditional maize varieties and one commercial hybrid). Their volatile compounds were analyzed by GC×GC–ToFMS (two-dimensional gas chromatography coupled with time-of-flight mass spectrometry) for an untargeted screening of the chemical compounds mainly formed during baking. It was possible to identify 128 volatiles that belonged to the main chemical families formed during this stage. Among these, only 16 had been previously detected in broas. The most abundant were furans, furanones, and pyranones, but the most relevant for the aroma of broas were ascribed to sulfur-containing compounds, in particular dimethyl trisulfide and methanethiol. Pyrazines might contribute negatively to the aroma of broas since they were present in higher amounts in the commercial broa. This work constitutes the most detailed study of the characterization of broas volatile compounds, particularly those formed during the Maillard reaction. These findings may contribute to the characterization of other maize-based foodstuffs, ultimately improving the production of foods with better sensory features.

Abstract
The human senses shape the life in several aspects, namely well-being, socialization, health status, and diet, among others. However, only recently, the understanding of this highly sophisticated sensory neuronal pathway has gained new advances. Also, it is known that each olfactory receptor cell expresses only one type of odorant receptor, and each receptor can detect a limited number of odorant substances. Odorant substances are typically volatile or semi-volatile in nature, exhibit low relative molecular weight, and represent a wide variety of chemical families. These molecules may be released from foods, constituting clouds surrounding them, and are responsible for their aroma properties. A single natural aroma may contain a huge number of volatile components, and some of them are present in trace amounts, which make their study especially difficult. Understanding the components of food aromas has become more important than ever with the transformation of food systems and the increased innovation in the food industry. Two-dimensional gas chromatography and time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC × GC-ToFMS) seems to be a powerful technique for the analytical coverage of the food aromas. Thus, the main purpose of this review is to critically discuss the potential of the GC × GC–based methodologies, combined with a headspace solvent-free microextraction technique, in tandem with data processing and data analysis, as a useful tool to the analysis of the chemical aroma clouds of foods. Due to the broad and complex nature of the aroma chemistry subject, some concepts and challenges related to the characterization of volatile molecules and the perception of aromas will be presented in advance. All topics covered in this review will be elucidated, as much as possible, with examples reported in recent publications, to make the interpretation of the fascinating world of food aroma chemistry more attractive and perceptive.

Abstract
Literature data about semi-volatile organic compounds in plants and the effect of cerium oxide nanoparticles on them are scarce. Surface modification of nanoparticles may change nanoparticle-environment interaction, and therefore affects compounds in plants. In this research, uncoated and glucose-, levan-, and pullulan-coated cerium oxide nanoparticles were used for wheat and pea treatment during the growth. The aim was the screening of semi-volatile organic compounds from plants' shoots using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, a powerful separation technique allowing to reach unique separation resolution, and investigation of qualitative changes after the treatment with coated cerium oxide nanoparticles. The results were analyzed by the identification of individual peaks and fingerprint analysis by image processing. Wheat samples contained a higher number of semi-volatile organic compounds (108) compared to pea (77) but were less affected by the treatments with coated nanoparticles. The highest number of compounds was detected in wheat after the treatment with levan- and pullulan-coated nanoparticles, and in pea after treatment with levan-coated nanoparticles. This article reports a successful application of a semi-volatile organic compounds profile presented only as categorical variables and unique fingerprint images for the inter-cultivar recognition. This method may be useful in screening nanoparticles' effects on different plants.

Abstract
Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with parallel mass spectrometry and flame ionization detection (GC × GC-MS/FID) enables effective chromatographic fingerprinting of complex samples by comprehensively mapping untargeted and targeted components. Moreover, the complementary characteristics of MS and FID open the possibility of performing multi-target quantitative profiling with great accuracy. If this synergy is applied to the complex volatile fraction of food, sample preparation is crucial and requires appropriate methodologies capable of providing true quantitative results. In this study, untargeted/targeted (UT) fingerprinting of extra-virgin olive oil volatile fractions is combined with accurate quantitative profiling by multiple headspace solid phase microextraction (MHS-SPME). External calibration on fifteen pre-selected analytes and FID predicted relative response factors (RRFs) enable the accurate quantification of forty-two analytes in total, including key-aroma compounds, potent odorants, and olive oil geographical markers. Results confirm good performances of comprehensive UT fingerprinting in developing classification models for geographical origin discrimination, while quantification by MHS-SPME provides accurate results and guarantees data referability and results transferability over years. Moreover, by this approach the extent of internal standardization procedure inaccuracy, largely adopted in food volatiles profiling, is measured. Internal standardization yielded an average relative error of 208 % for the fifteen calibrated compounds, with an overestimation of + 538% for (E)-2-hexenal, the most abundant yet informative volatile of olive oil, and a -89% and -80% for (E)-2-octenal and (E)-2-nonenal respectively, analytes with a lower HS distribution constant. Compared to existing methods based on 1D-GC, the current procedure offers better separation power and chromatographic resolution that greatly improve method specificity and selectivity and results in lower LODs and LOQs, high calibration performances (i.e., R2 and residual distribution), and wider linear range of responses. As an artificial intelligence smelling machine, the MHS-SPME-GC × GC-MS/FID method is here adopted to delineate extra-virgin olive oil aroma blueprints; an objective tool with great flexibility and reliability that can improve the quality and information power of each analytical run.

Abstract
Ozonation might increase the risk of wastewater due to byproduct formation, especially in the presence of bromide. In this study, a new analytical method was developed to identify new brominated disinfection byproducts (Br-DBPs) during ozonation, using comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography-single quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC×GC-qMS) connected with an electron capture detector in parallel. The obtained data were analyzed using a mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) difference extraction method. Over 1304 DBPs were detected in an ozonated phenylalanine solution. Further screening of 635 DBPs was conducted using the m/z difference extraction method. Finally, the structures for 12 Br-DBPs were confirmed and for 4 Br-DBPs were tentatively proposed by comparison with the NIST library and standard compounds. Eight of the confirmed Br-DBPs are first reported and identified: 2-bromostyrene, 1-bromo-1-phenylethylene, 2-bromobenzaldehyde, 3-bromobenzaldehyde, 4-bromobenzaldehyde, 2-bromophenylacetonitrile, 3-bromophenylacetonitrile and 4-bromophenylacetonitrile. These DBPs and 2,4,6-tribromophenol were detected at nanogram- to microgram-per-liter concentrations during ozonation of authentic water samples like algal bloom waters, wastewater treatment plant effluents, and surface water. The toxicities of these compounds were generally higher than that of bromate. The developed analytical method is a powerful technique for analyzing complex compounds and provides a novel way of identifying byproducts in future studies.

Abstract
Air quality is a worldwide problem. Nowadays, thousands of chemicals may be found in the atmosphere from biogenic and anthropogenic sources due to numerous atmospheric reactions. Unfortunately, throughout the world only a small group of organic compounds is monitored on a regular basis. Therefore, an important environmental task involves discovering the most important pollutants for particular cities and regions for regular monitoring in the future. Direct measurements of contaminants in the atmosphere are not always efficient as air represents an extremely dynamic medium. Thus indirect analysis by using precipitations becomes a more popular method of environmental analysis. Over 700 organic compounds belonging to the various classes of chemicals were identified in the Moscow rainwater samples collected in the spring of 2017 using GC/MS instruments including the most analytically powerful modern technique - GC × GC-HRMS. Here we report the nature and levels of 160 priority pollutants and emerging contaminants belonging to the most relevant classes from the environmental point of view: polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, organophosphates, dialkylphthalates, phenols, and alkylpyridines. This is the first work dealing with GC-MS analysis of the rainwater in Moscow (Russia).

Abstract
The development of instrumental analytical techniques provided the opportunity for in-depth characterization of many food matrices. In particular, the use of gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry gives impressive results in terms of quality and authenticity testing, conducting food freshness evaluations and contamination assessments. A new variant of gas chromatography, namely two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × GC), and various versions of mass spectrometry have been developed since last 15 years, and they still remain at the time of their renaissance. The present critical review is focused on the use of GC × GC coupled with mass spectrometry for qualitative and quantitative reasons in food analysis. It is explained how powerful analytical tool is above-mentioned technical solution. Special attention is devoted to the issues related to the development of this technique during last years in terms of key construction elements, such as modulators and MS detectors. Finally, the critical discussion on many various aspects including advantages and more important disadvantages, caused probable moderate interest of this solution, in food analytics is concerned.

Abstract
The European and American methods for the determination of polychlorodibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorodibenzofurans in stationary source emissions require a high-resolution mass spectrometer detector. At the same time, all of the 17 toxic 2,3,7,8-chlorine-substituted isomers have to be separated by an appropriate chromatographic method. The resulting analysis has long runtimes and sometimes a double-column run is needed, which results in a huge waste of time, money and manual labor. To obtain a fast and cost-effective but still reliable analytical system, a single-column gas chromatography with hydrogen as carrier gas and tandem mass spectrometry detection is proposed. The use of hydrogen as the carrier gas is a good choice to shorten runtimes and improve the chromatographic resolution, while tandem mass spectrometry is a well-known alternative for this analysis. All the chromatographic and mass spectrometric parameters fill the requirements of the reference methods with a 35% reduction of runtimes. The accuracy is tested with three fly ash samples of a proficiency interlaboratory test. A good correlation between the results is obtained (R2 = 0.992, slope = 0.9675), and no coelutions are noted. The system robustness is tested during 5 years of constant use and the maximal relative standard deviation of the relative response factor is 18.8%.

Abstract
A solid-phase nanoextraction method has been developed for the extraction and preconcentration of polychlorinated biphenyls using carboxyl multiwalled carbon nanotubes as a solid nano-sorbent. Parameters affecting extraction efficiency such as sorbent amount, desorption solvent type and volume, extraction time, pH, and salt content have been studied. Under optimized conditions, the correlation coefficient was up to 0.9989, the limits of detection was in the range of 1.4-3.5 ng/L, and limits of quantification was between 4.8 and 11.6 ng/L. The recoveries were in the range of 99-106% for different spiked analytes. The relative standard deviation for water samples spiked with two different spiking levels has been between 4 and 10%. The proposed sustainable method is rapid, easy to use, and small consumption of organic solvent for the detection and determination of trace levels of polychlorinated biphenyls in environmental waters.

Abstract
The task of lipid analysis has always challenged separation scientists, and new techniques in chromatography were often developed for the separation of lipids; however, no single technique or methodology is yet capable of affording a comprehensive screening of all lipid species and classes. This review acquaints the role of supercritical fluid chromatography within the field of lipid analysis, from the early developed capillary separations based on pure CO2 , to the most recent techniques employing packed columns under subcritical conditions, including the niche multidimensional techniques using supercritical fluids in at least one of the separation dimensions. A short history of supercritical fluid chromatography will be introduced first, from its early popularity in the late 1980s, to the sudden fall and oblivion until the last decade, experiencing a regain of interest within the chromatographic community. Afterwards, the subject of lipid nomenclature and classification will be briefly dealt with, before discussing the main applications of supercritical fluid chromatography for food analysis, according to the specific class of lipids.
