Brush-like polymers: design, synthesis and applications

With the development of controlled polymerisation, almost all polymerisation strategies have been successfully transplanted to surface-initiated polymerisation. The resulting polymer brushes have emerged as an effective tool for surface functionalization and modulation of the surface properties of materials. To meet various demands it is possible to tailor a material surface with polymer brushes that have diverse dimensionalities, morphologies and compositions. The crowded environment within polymer brushes as well as the stretched conformation of polymer chains sometimes provide unique physicochemical properties, which lead to the delicate creation of inorganic-organic hybridised nanostructures, anti-fouling coatings, biomedical carriers, and materials for use in lubrication, photonics and energy storage. So far, challenges remain in the high-precision synthesis and topological control needed to realize extended applications of polymer brushes. In this Feature Article, we highlight the topology, potential application prospects and various synthetic protocols, particularly for recently established methods, for the efficient synthesis of polymer brushes, as well as their benefits and limitations.

Articular and Artificial Cartilage, Characteristics, Properties and Testing Approaches-A Review

The design and manufacture of artificial tissue for knee joints have been highlighted recently among researchers which necessitates an apt approach for its assessment. Even though most re-searches have focused on specific mechanical or tribological tests, other aspects have remained underexplored. In this review, elemental keys for design and testing artificial cartilage are dis-cussed and advanced methods addressed. Articular cartilage structure, its compositions in load-bearing and tribological properties of hydrogels, mechanical properties, test approaches and wear mechanisms are discussed. Bilayer hydrogels as a niche in tissue artificialization are presented, and recent gaps are assessed.

Stabilization of Inverse Miniemulsions by Silyl-Protected Homopolymers

Inverse (water-in-oil) miniemulsions are an important method to encapsulate hydrophilic payloads such as oligonucleotides or peptides. However, the stabilization of inverse miniemulsions usually requires block copolymers that are difficult to synthesize and/or cannot be easily removed after transfer from a hydrophobic continuous phase to an aqueous continuous phase. We describe here a new strategy for the synthesis of a surfactant for inverse miniemulsions by radical addition⁻fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, which consists in a homopolymer with triisopropylsilyl protecting groups. The protecting groups ensure the efficient stabilization of the inverse (water-in-oil, w/o) miniemulsions. Nanocapsules can be formed and the protecting group can be subsequently cleaved for the re-dispersion of nanocapsules in an aqueous medium with a minimal amount of additional surfactant.

Facile and cost-effective branched acrylic copolymers from multifunctional comonomers and multifunctional chain transfer agents

Branched acrylic copolymers were synthesised via facile conventional free-radical polymerisations taken to high conversion using comonomers containing 2-6 acrylate functional groups and chain transfer agents containing 1-8 thiol functional groups.

Polymerization-induced self-assembly of block copolymer nano-objects via RAFT aqueous dispersion polymerization

In this Perspective, we discuss the recent development of polymerization-induced self-assembly mediated by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) aqueous dispersion polymerization. This approach has quickly become a powerful and versatile technique for the synthesis of a wide range of bespoke organic diblock copolymer nano-objects of controllable size, morphology, and surface functionality. Given its potential scalability, such environmentally-friendly formulations are expected to offer many potential applications, such as novel Pickering emulsifiers, efficient microencapsulation vehicles, and sterilizable thermo-responsive hydrogels for the cost-effective long-term storage of mammalian cells.

RAFT aqueous dispersion polymerization yields poly(ethylene glycol)-based diblock copolymer nano-objects with predictable single phase morphologies

A poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) macromolecular chain transfer agent (macro-CTA) is prepared in high yield (>95%) with 97% dithiobenzoate chain-end functionality in a three-step synthesis starting from a monohydroxy PEG₁₁₃ precursor. This PEG₁₁₃-dithiobenzoate is then used for the reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) aqueous dispersion polymerization of 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA). Polymerizations conducted under optimized conditions at 50 °C led to high conversions as judged by ¹H NMR spectroscopy and relatively low diblock copolymer polydispersities (M_w/M_n < 1.25) as judged by GPC. The latter technique also indicated good blocking efficiencies, since there was minimal PEG₁₁₃ macro-CTA contamination. Systematic variation of the mean degree of polymerization of the core-forming PHPMA block allowed PEG₁₁₃-PHPMA_x diblock copolymer spheres, worms, or vesicles to be prepared at up to 17.5% w/w solids, as judged by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy studies. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) analysis revealed that more exotic oligolamellar vesicles were observed at 20% w/w solids when targeting highly asymmetric diblock compositions. Detailed analysis of SAXS curves indicated that the mean number of membranes per oligolamellar vesicle is approximately three. A PEG₁₁₃-PHPMA_x phase diagram was constructed to enable the reproducible targeting of pure phases, as opposed to mixed morphologies (e.g., spheres plus worms or worms plus vesicles). This new RAFT PISA formulation is expected to be important for the rational and efficient synthesis of a wide range of biocompatible, thermo-responsive PEGylated diblock copolymer nano-objects for various biomedical applications.

On the Origins of Nitroxide Mediated Polymerization (NMP) and Reversible Addition–Fragmentation Chain Transfer (RAFT)

The early experiments on radical polymerization, which were to lead to a study of nitroxide trapping of the initiation step and the interest in defect groups, particularly the macromonomers formed by termination by disproportionation, are discussed. Results from the nitroxide trapping clearly show that the initiation step ranges from simple clean addition to the head of the monomer, to complex addition/abstraction reactions. Careful selection of the monomer/initiation system is emphasized with particular reference to two common monomers, styrene and methyl methacrylate, and two initiating radicals, t-butoxy and benzoyloxy. The discovery of nitroxide mediated polymerization (NMP) from observations made during the nitroxide trapping work is reported and the ability to have a living radical system demonstrated with numerous examples. Similarly, the study of the copolymerization of macromonomers, formed by disproportionation of the propagating chains, is discussed with the discovery of β-scission and an early form of addition–fragmentation reported. The evolution of reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) to a highly versatile and commercially attractive radical system is reported and the detailed chemistry behind the discovery of this living radical system discussed. Both NMP and RAFT enable the synthesis of structures not previously possible by radical polymerization and in some cases not possible by any other process.

Molecularly imprinted polymers by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer precipitation polymerization for preconcentration of atrazine in food matrices

Controlled/living free radical polymerization (CLRP) has been accepted as an effective technique in preparation of polymers because of its inherent advantages over traditional free radical polymerization. In this work, reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, the ideal candidate for CLRP, was applied to prepare atrazine molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) by precipitation polymerization. The resultant RAFT-MIPs demonstrated uniform spherical shape with rough surface containing significant amounts of micropores, leading to an improvement in imprinting efficiency compared with that of the MIPs prepared by traditional precipitation polymerization (TR-MIPs). The maximum binding capacities of the RAFT-MIPs and TR-MIPs were 2.89 mg g(-1) and 1.53 mg g(-1), respectively. The recoveries ranging from 81.5% to 100.9% were achieved by one-step extraction by using RAFT-MIPs for preconcentration and selective separation of atrazine in spiked lettuce and corn samples. These results provided the possibility for the separation and enrichment of atrazine from complicated matrices by RAFT-MIPs.

Free-standing membranes via covalent cross-linking of polyelectrolyte multilayers with complementary reactivity

Polyelectrolyte multilayers were prepared by the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique from polyanions bearing aldehyde and polycations with 4-methylpyridinium moieties. The aldol reaction of these complementary reactive groups can be followed by the formation of fluorescent merocyanine dyes, resulting in cross-linked, ultrathin polymer films. The efficient stabilization of the polymer films allows for their intact removal from high surface energy supports, such as glass or surface oxidized silicon wafers, by simple treatment with salt solutions, yielding free-standing membranes. Increasing separation of the reactive polycation and polyanion layers with layers of inert polycation and polyanion analogues only gradually prevents the coupling reaction. From this dependence, polyions assembled in consecutive adsorption layers seem to be able to penetrate into as far as three neighboring layers.

A Bipedal Silica-Immobilized Azo-Initiator for Surface-Confined Radical Polymerizations

The present study introduces the silica-anchored azo-initiator 4,4′-azobis(4-cyano-N-(3″-triethoxysilylpropyl)-valeric amide) (ACTA) for the surface-initiated polymerization of methyl acrylate (MA) with and without additional grafted reversible addition–fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agents 1,4-bis(3′-trimethoxysilylpropyltrithiocarbonylmethyl)benzene and 1,6-bis(o,p-2′-trimethoxysilylethylbenzyltrithiocarbonyl)hexane. While the sole use of silica-linked ACTA produced grafted poly(methyl acrylate) (pMA) of high molecular weight, due to a 2D Trommsdorff effect, the polymerization in combination with the fixed RAFT agents exhibited living behaviour with increasing molecular weights during polymerization. Silica-pMA hybrids were further analyzed via thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy, which revealed significant differences between the three approaches.
