Simultaneous multislice imaging with slice-multiplexed RF pulses

Local T2 measurement employing longitudinal Hadamard encoding and adiabatic inversion pulses in porous media

Band selective adiabatic inversion radio frequency pulses were employed for multi-slice T2 distribution measurements in porous media samples. Multi-slice T2 measurement employing longitudinal Hadamard encoding has an inherent sensitivity advantage over slice-by-slice local T2 measurements. The slice selection process is rendered largely immune to B1 variation by employing hyperbolic secant adiabatic inversion pulses, which simultaneously invert spins in several well-defined slices. While Hadamard encoding is well established for local spectroscopy, the current work is the first use of Hadamard encoding for local T2 measurement.

Combined simulated annealing and Shinnar-Le Roux pulse design of slice-multiplexed RF pulses for multi-slice imaging

Slice-multiplexed RF pulses have recently been introduced for simultaneous multi-slice imaging. Their novel aspect is that each slice is given a different linear phase profile, and hence a different slice-rephasing requirement, by the pulse. During readout, extra slice gradients are applied such that when one slice is rephased, the others are dephased to prevent aliasing. In this paper, an improved method of designing slice-multiplexed RF pulses is presented: component pulses which are optimized with simulated annealing for a specific rephasing are combined using Shinnar-Le Roux methods. In this way, non-linearities at higher flip angles are taken into account and more slices can be excited. Bloch simulations show the phase and amplitude profile of component pulses are faithfully preserved in the multiplexed pulse. Three- and four-slice multiplex pulses are demonstrated in gradient- and spin-echo in-vivo imaging.

Parallel imaging of hyperpolarized helium-3 with simultaneous slice excitation

Hyperpolarized (HP) gas imaging of the lungs is an ideal potential application for parallel imaging. This is due to the fact that there is limited scan time (breath hold of 20 s) and limited non-renewable polarization. Reduced phase encode parallel imaging is demanding on hardware in that it requires multiple receivers. In this work, simultaneous parallel acquisition of hyperpolarized (HP) 3He images from multiple slices was demonstrated in phantoms and in vivo using a simultaneous slice excitation method, at a field strength of 1.5 T. The pulse sequence allows simultaneous acquisition of n slices per RF excitation, thus reducing the number of RF pulses needed to fully cover a given volume with multi-slicing. Unlike conventional parallel imaging, this method does not require prior reference scan information, which would consume some of the finite longitudinal polarization in lung ventilation studies with HP gas.
