Abstract
PURPOSE Navigator-based correction of rigid-body motion reconciling high precision with minimal acquisition, minimal calibration and simple, fast processing. METHODS A short orbital navigator (2.3 ms) is inserted in a three-dimensional (3D) gradient echo sequence for human head imaging. Head rotation and translation are determined by linear regression based on a complex-valued model built either from three reference navigators or in a reference-less fashion, from the first actual navigator. Optionally, the model is expanded by global phase and field offset. Run-time scan correction on this basis establishes servo control that maintains validity of the linear picture by keeping its expansion point stable in the head frame of reference. The technique is assessed in a phantom and demonstrated by motion-corrected imaging in vivo. RESULTS The proposed approach is found to establish stable motion control both with and without reference acquisition. In a phantom, it is shown to accurately detect motion mimicked by rotation of scan geometry as well as change in global B0 . It is demonstrated to converge to accurate motion estimates after perturbation well beyond the linear signal range. In vivo, servo navigation achieved motion detection with precision in the single-digit range of micrometers and millidegrees. Involuntary and intentional motion in the range of several millimeters were successfully corrected, achieving excellent image quality. CONCLUSION The combination of linear regression and feedback control enables prospective motion correction for head imaging with high precision and accuracy, short navigator readouts, fast run-time computation, and minimal demand for reference data.

Abstract
PURPOSE To demonstrate for the first time the feasibility of performing prospective motion correction using spherical navigators (SNAVs). METHODS SNAVs were interleaved in a 3D FLASH sequence with an additional short baseline scan (6.8 s) for fast rotation estimation. Assessment of SNAV-based prospective motion correction was performed in six volunteers. Participant motion was guided using randomly generated stepwise prompts as well as prompts derived from real motion cases. Experiments were performed on a 3 T MRI scanner using a 32-channel head coil. RESULTS When optimized for real-time application, SNAV-based motion estimates were computed in 25.8 ± 1.3 ms. Phantom-based quantification of rotation and translation accuracy indicated mean absolute errors of 0.10 ± 0.09° and 0.25 ± 0.14 mm, respectively. Implementing SNAV-based motion estimates for prospective motion correction led to a clear improvement in image quality with minimal increase in scan time (<5%). CONCLUSION Optimization of SNAV processing for real-time application enables prospective motion correction with low latency and minimal scan time requirements.

Abstract
The suppression of motion artefacts from MR images is a challenging task. The purpose of this paper was to develop a standalone novel technique to suppress motion artefacts in MR images using a data-driven deep learning approach. A simulation framework was developed to generate motion-corrupted images from motion-free images using randomly generated motion profiles. An Inception-ResNet deep learning network architecture was used as the encoder and was augmented with a stack of convolution and upsampling layers to form an encoder-decoder network. The network was trained on simulated motion-corrupted images to identify and suppress those artefacts attributable to motion. The network was validated on unseen simulated datasets and real-world experimental motion-corrupted in vivo brain datasets. The trained network was able to suppress the motion artefacts in the reconstructed images, and the mean structural similarity (SSIM) increased from 0.9058 to 0.9338. The network was also able to suppress the motion artefacts from the real-world experimental dataset, and the mean SSIM increased from 0.8671 to 0.9145. The motion correction of the experimental datasets demonstrated the effectiveness of the motion simulation generation process. The proposed method successfully removed motion artefacts and outperformed an iterative entropy minimization method in terms of the SSIM index and normalized root mean squared error, which were 5-10% better for the proposed method. In conclusion, a novel, data-driven motion correction technique has been developed that can suppress motion artefacts from motion-corrupted MR images. The proposed technique is a standalone, post-processing method that does not interfere with data acquisition or reconstruction parameters, thus making it suitable for routine clinical practice.

Abstract
PURPOSE To demonstrate, for the first time, the feasibility of obtaining low-latency 3D rigid-body motion information from spherical Lissajous navigators acquired at extremely small k-space radii, which has significant advantages compared with previous techniques. THEORY AND METHODS A spherical navigator concept is proposed in which the surface of a k-space sphere is sampled on a 3D Lissajous curve at a radius of 0.1/cm. The navigator only uses a single excitation and is acquired in less than 5 ms. Rotation estimations were calculated with an algorithm from computer vision that exploits a rotation theorem of the spherical harmonics transform and has minimal computational cost. The effectiveness of the concept was investigated with phantom and in vivo measurements on a commercial 3T MRI scanner. RESULTS Scanner-induced in vivo motion was measured with maximum absolute errors of 0.58° and 0.33 mm for rotations and translations, respectively. In the case of real, in vivo motion, the proposed method showed good agreement with motion information from FSL image registrations (mean/maximum deviations of 0.37°/1.24° and 0.44 mm/1.35 mm). In addition, phantom measurements indicated precisions of 0.014° and 0.013 mm. The computations for complete motion information took, on average, 24 ms on an ordinary laptop. CONCLUSIONS This work demonstrates a proof of concept for obtaining accurate motion information from small-radius spherical navigators. The method has the potential to overcome several previously reported problems and could help increase the utility of navigator-based motion correction both in research and in the clinic.

Abstract
Integrated positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (PET/MRI) is an imaging technology that provides complementary anatomical and functional information for medical diagnostics. Both PET and MRI are highly susceptible to motion artifacts due, in part, to long acquisition times. The simultaneous acquisition of the two modalities presents the opportunity to use MRI navigator techniques for motion correction of both PET and MRI data. For this task, we propose spherical navigator echoes (SNAVs)-3D k-space navigators that can accurately and rapidly measure rigid body motion in all six degrees of freedom. SNAVs were incorporated into turbo FLASH (tfl)-a product fast gradient echo sequence-to create the tfl-SNAV pulse sequence. Acquiring in vivo brain images from a healthy volunteer with both sequences first compared the tfl-SNAV and product tfl sequences. It was observed that incorporation of the SNAVs into the image sequence did not have any detrimental impact on the image quality. The SNAV motion correction technique was evaluated using an anthropomorphic brain phantom. Following a stationary reference image where the tfl-SNAV sequence was acquired along with simultaneous list-mode PET, three identical PET/MRI scans were performed where the phantom was moved several times throughout each acquisition. This motion-up to 11° and 14 mm-resulted in motion artifacts in both PET and MR images. Following SNAV motion correction of the MRI and PET list-mode data, artifact reduction was achieved for both the PET and MR images in all three motion trials. The corrected images have improved image quality and are quantitatively more similar to the ground truth reference images.

Abstract
PURPOSE To develop and evaluate a tool for accurate, reproducible, and programmable motion control of imaging phantoms for use in motion sensitive magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) appli cations. METHODS In this paper, the authors introduce a compact linear motion stage that is made of nonmagnetic material and is actuated with an ultrasonic motor. The stage can be positioned at arbitrary positions and orientations inside the scanner bore to move, push, or pull arbitrary phantoms. Using optical trackers, measuring microscopes, and navigators, the accuracy of the stage in motion control was evaluated. Also, the effect of the stage on image signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), artifacts, and B0 field homogeneity was evaluated. RESULTS The error of the stage in reaching fixed positions was 0.025 ± 0.021 mm. In execution of dynamic motion profiles, the worst-case normalized root mean squared error was below 7% (for frequencies below 0.33 Hz). Experiments demonstrated that the stage did not introduce artifacts nor did it degrade the image SNR. The effect of the stage on the B0 field was less than 2 ppm. CONCLUSIONS The results of the experiments indicate that the proposed system is MRI-compatible and can create reliable and reproducible motion that may be used for validation and assessment of motion related MRI applications.

Abstract
PURPOSE To develop and evaluate a rapid spherical navigator echo (SNAV) motion correction technique, then apply it for retrospective correction of brain images. METHODS The pre-rotated, template matching SNAV method (preRot-SNAV) was developed in combination with a novel hybrid baseline strategy, which includes acquired and interpolated templates. Specifically, the SNAV templates are only rotated around X- and Y-axis; for each rotated SNAV, simulated baseline templates that mimic object rotation about the Z-axis were interpolated. The new method was first evaluated with phantom experiments. Then, a customized SNAV-interleaved gradient echo sequence was used to image three volunteers performing directed head motion. The SNAV motion measurements were used to retrospectively correct the brain images. Experiments were performed using a 3.0T whole-body MRI scanner and both single and 8-channel head coils. RESULTS Phantom rotations and translations measured using the hybrid baselines agreed to within 0.9° and 1mm compared to those measured with the original preRot-SNAV method. Retrospective motion correction of in vivo images using the hybrid preRot-SNAV effectively corrected for head rotation up to 4° and 4mm. CONCLUSIONS The presented hybrid approach enables the acquisition of pre-rotated baseline templates in as little as 2.5s, and results in accurate measurement of rotations and translations. Retrospective 3D motion correction successfully reduced motion artifacts in vivo.

Abstract
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has now been used clinically for more than 30 years. Today, MRI serves as the primary diagnostic modality for many clinical problems. In this article, historical developments in the field of MRI will be discussed with a focus on technological innovations. Topics include the initial discoveries in nuclear magnetic resonance that allowed for the advent of MRI as well as the development of whole-body, high field strength, and open MRI systems. Dedicated imaging coils, basic pulse sequences, contrast-enhanced, and functional imaging techniques will also be discussed in a historical context. This article describes important technological innovations in the field of MRI, together with their clinical applicability today, providing critical insights into future developments.

Abstract
We introduce a novel method of prospectively compensating for subject motion in neuroanatomical imaging. Short three-dimensional echo-planar imaging volumetric navigators are embedded in a long three-dimensional sequence, and the resulting image volumes are registered to provide an estimate of the subject's location in the scanner at a cost of less than 500 ms, ~ 1% change in contrast, and ~3% change in intensity. This time fits well into the existing gaps in sequences routinely used for neuroimaging, thus giving a motion-corrected sequence with no extra time required. We also demonstrate motion-driven selective reacquisition of k-space to further compensate for subject motion. We perform multiple validation experiments to evaluate accuracy, navigator impact on tissue intensity/contrast, and the improvement in final output. The complete system operates without adding additional hardware to the scanner and requires no external calibration, making it suitable for high-throughput environments.
