Rapid dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI for small animals at 7T using 3D ultra-short echo time and golden-angle radial sparse parallel MRI

Feasibility of measuring blood-brain barrier permeability using ultra-short echo time radial magnetic resonance imaging

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of using 3-dimensional (3D) ultra-short echo time (UTE) radial imaging method for measurement of the permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to gadolinium-based contrast agent. In this study, we propose to use the golden-angle radial sparse parallel (GRASP) method with 3D center-out trajectories for UTE, hence named as 3D UTE-GRASP. We first examined the feasibility of using 3D UTE-GRASP dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE)-magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for differentiating subtle BBB disruptions induced by focused ultrasound (FUS). Then, we examined the BBB permeability changes in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology using Alzheimer's disease transgenic mice (5xFAD) at different ages.

METHODS

For FUS experiments, we used four Sprague Dawley rats at similar ages where we compared BBB permeability of each rat receiving the FUS sonication with different acoustic power (0.4-1.0 MPa). For AD transgenic mice experiments, we included three 5xFAD mice (6, 12, and 16 months old) and three wild-type mice (4, 8, and 12 months old).

RESULTS

The result from FUS experiments showed a progressive increase in BBB permeability with increase of acoustic power (p < .05), demonstrating the sensitivity of DCE-MRI method for detecting subtle changes in BBB disruption. Our AD transgenic mice experiments suggest an early BBB disruption in 5xFAD mice, which is further impaired with aging.

CONCLUSION

The results in this study substantiate the feasibility of using the proposed 3D UTE-GRASP method for detecting subtle BBB permeability changes expected in neurodegenerative diseases, such as AD.

Radial magnetic resonance image reconstruction with a deep unrolled projected fast iterative soft-thresholding network

Radially sampling of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an effective way to accelerate the imaging. How to preserve the image details in reconstruction is always challenging. In this work, a deep unrolled neural network is designed to emulate the iterative sparse image reconstruction process of a projected fast soft-threshold algorithm (pFISTA). The proposed method, an unrolled pFISTA network for Deep Radial MRI (pFISTA-DR), include the preprocessing module to refine coil sensitivity maps and initial reconstructed image, the learnable convolution filters to extract image feature maps, and adaptive threshold to robustly remove image artifacts. Experimental results show that, among the compared methods, pFISTA-DR provides the best reconstruction and achieved the highest PSNR, the highest SSIM and the lowest reconstruction errors.

Textural Features of Mouse Glioma Models Measured by Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced MR Images with 3D Isotropic Resolution

This paper investigates the effect of anisotropic resolution on the image textural features of pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters of a murine glioma model using dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MR images acquired with an isotropic resolution at 7T with pre-contrast T1 mapping. The PK parameter maps of whole tumors at isotropic resolution were generated using the two-compartment exchange model combined with the three-site-two-exchange model. The textural features of these isotropic images were compared with those of simulated, thick-slice, anisotropic images to assess the influence of anisotropic voxel resolution on the textural features of tumors. The isotropic images and parameter maps captured distributions of high pixel intensity that were absent in the corresponding anisotropic images with thick slices. A significant difference was observed in 33% of the histogram and textural features extracted from anisotropic images and parameter maps, compared to those extracted from corresponding isotropic images. Anisotropic images in different orthogonal orientations demonstrated 42.1% of the histogram and textural features to be significantly different from those of isotropic images. This study demonstrates that the anisotropy of voxel resolution needs to be carefully considered when comparing the textual features of tumor PK parameters and contrast-enhanced images.

Evaluation of cellular water exchange in a mouse glioma model using dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI with two flip angles

This manuscript aims to evaluate the robustness and significance of the water efflux rate constant (k_io) parameter estimated using the two flip-angle Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced (DCE) MRI approach with a murine glioblastoma model at 7 T. The repeatability of contrast kinetic parameters and k_io measurement was assessed by a test-retest experiment (n = 7). The association of k_io with cellular metabolism was investigated through DCE-MRI and FDG-PET experiments (n = 7). Tumor response to a combination therapy of bevacizumab and fluorouracil (5FU) monitored by contrast kinetic parameters and k_io (n = 10). Test-retest experiments demonstrated compartmental volume fractions (v_e and v_p) remained consistent between scans while the vascular functional measures (F_p and PS) and k_io showed noticeable changes, most likely due to physiological changes of the tumor. The standardized uptake value (SUV) of tumors has a linear correlation with k_io (R² = 0.547), a positive correlation with F_p (R² = 0.504), and weak correlations with v_e (R² = 0.150), v_p (R² = 0.077), PS (R² = 0.117), K^trans (R² = 0.088) and whole tumor volume (R² = 0.174). In the treatment study, the k_io of the treated group was significantly lower than the control group one day after bevacizumab treatment and decreased significantly after 5FU treatment compared to the baseline. This study results support the feasibility of measuring k_io using the two flip-angle DCE-MRI approach in cancer imaging.

Performance of spiral UTE-MRI of the lung in post-COVID patients

Patients recovered from COVID-19 may develop long-COVID symptoms in the lung. For this patient population (post-COVID patients), they may benefit from longitudinal, radiation-free lung MRI exams for monitoring lung lesion development and progression. The purpose of this study was to investigate the performance of a spiral ultrashort echo time MRI sequence (Spiral-VIBE-UTE) in a cohort of post-COVID patients in comparison with CT and to compare image quality obtained using different spiral MRI acquisition protocols. Lung MRI was performed in 36 post-COVID patients with different acquisition protocols, including different spiral sampling reordering schemes (line in partition or partition in line) and different breath-hold positions (inspiration or expiration). Three experienced chest radiologists independently scored all the MR images for different pulmonary structures. Lung MR images from spiral acquisition protocol that received the highest image quality scores were also compared against corresponding CT images in 27 patients for evaluating diagnostic image quality and lesion identification. Spiral-VIBE-UTE MRI acquired with the line in partition reordering scheme in an inspiratory breath-holding position achieved the highest image quality scores (score range = 2.17-3.69) compared to others (score range = 1.7-3.29). Compared to corresponding chest CT images, three readers found that 81.5% (22 out of 27), 81.5% (22 out of 27) and 37% (10 out of 27) of the MR images were useful, respectively. Meanwhile, they all agreed that MRI could identify significant lesions in the lungs. The Spiral-VIBE-UTE sequence allows for fast imaging of the lung in a single breath hold. It could be a valuable tool for lung imaging without radiation and could provide great value for managing different lung diseases including assessment of post-COVID lesions.

4D Golden-Angle Radial MRI at Subsecond Temporal Resolution

Intraframe motion blurring, as a major challenge in free-breathing dynamic MRI, can be reduced if high temporal resolution can be achieved. To address this challenge, this work proposes a highly accelerated 4D (3D + time) dynamic MRI framework with subsecond temporal resolution that does not require explicit motion compensation. The method combines standard stack-of-stars golden-angle radial sampling and tailored GRASP-Pro (Golden-angle RAdial Sparse Parallel imaging with imProved performance) reconstruction. Specifically, 4D dynamic MRI acquisition is performed continuously without motion gating or sorting. The k-space centers in stack-of-stars radial data are organized to guide estimation of a temporal basis, with which GRASP-Pro reconstruction is employed to enforce joint low-rank subspace and sparsity constraints. This new basis estimation strategy is the new feature proposed for subspace-based reconstruction in this work to achieve high temporal resolution (e.g., subsecond/3D volume). It does not require sequence modification to acquire additional navigation data, it is compatible with commercially available stack-of-stars sequences, and it does not need an intermediate reconstruction step. The proposed 4D dynamic MRI approach was tested in abdominal motion phantom, free-breathing abdominal MRI, and dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (DCE-MRI). Our results have shown that GRASP-Pro reconstruction with the new basis estimation strategy enables highly-accelerated 4D dynamic imaging at subsecond temporal resolution (with five spokes or less for each dynamic frame per image slice) for both free-breathing non-DCE-MRI and DCE-MRI. In the abdominal phantom, better image quality with lower root mean square error and higher structural similarity index was achieved using GRASP-Pro compared with standard GRASP. With the ability to acquire each 3D image in less than 1 s, intraframe respiratory blurring can be intrinsically reduced for body applications with our approach, which eliminates the need for explicit motion detection and motion compensation.

Self-gated, dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging with compressed-sensing reconstruction for evaluating endothelial permeability in the aortic root of atherosclerotic mice

High-risk atherosclerotic plaques are characterized by active inflammation and abundant leaky microvessels. We present a self-gated, dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) acquisition with compressed sensing reconstruction and apply it to assess longitudinal changes in endothelial permeability in the aortic root of Apoe-/- atherosclerotic mice during natural disease progression. Twenty-four, 8-week-old, female Apoe-/- mice were divided into four groups (n = 6 each) and imaged with self-gated DCE-MRI at 4, 8, 12, and 16 weeks after high-fat diet initiation, and then euthanized for CD68 immunohistochemistry for macrophages. Eight additional mice were kept on a high-fat diet and imaged longitudinally at the same time points. Aortic-root pseudo-concentration curves were analyzed using a validated piecewise linear model. Contrast agent wash-in and washout slopes (b1 and b2 ) were measured as surrogates of aortic root endothelial permeability and compared with macrophage density by immunohistochemistry. b2 , indicating contrast agent washout, was significantly higher in mice kept on an high-fat diet for longer periods of time (p = 0.03). Group comparison revealed significant differences between mice on a high-fat diet for 4 versus 16 weeks (p = 0.03). Macrophage density also significantly increased with diet duration (p = 0.009). Spearman correlation between b2 from DCE-MRI and macrophage density indicated a weak relationship between the two parameters (r = 0.28, p = 0.20). Validated piecewise linear modeling of the DCE-MRI data showed that the aortic root contrast agent washout rate is significantly different during disease progression. Further development of this technique from a single-slice to a 3D acquisition may enable better investigation of the relationship between in vivo imaging of endothelial permeability and atherosclerotic plaques' genetic, molecular, and cellular makeup in this important model of disease.

Superpixel spectral unmixing framework for the volumetric assessment of tissue chromophores: A photoacoustic data-driven approach

The assessment of tissue chromophores at a volumetric scale is vital for an improved diagnosis and treatment of a large number of diseases. Spectral photoacoustic imaging (sPAI) co-registered with high-resolution ultrasound (US) is an innovative technology that has a great potential for clinical translation as it can assess the volumetric distribution of the tissue components. Conventionally, to detect and separate the chromophores from sPAI, an input of the expected tissue absorption spectra is required. However, in pathological conditions, the prediction of the absorption spectra is difficult as it can change with respect to the physiological state. Besides, this conventional approach can also be hampered due to spectral coloring, which is a prominent distortion effect that induces spectral changes at depth. Here, we are proposing a novel data-driven framework that can overcome all these limitations and provide an improved assessment of the tissue chromophores. We have developed a superpixel spectral unmixing (SPAX) approach that can detect the most and less prominent absorber spectra and their volumetric distribution without any user interactions. Within the SPAX framework, we have also implemented an advanced spectral coloring compensation approach by utilizing US image segmentation and Monte Carlo simulations, based on a predefined library of optical properties. The framework has been tested on tissue-mimicking phantoms and also on healthy animals. The obtained results show enhanced specificity and sensitivity for the detection of tissue chromophores. To our knowledge, this is a unique framework that accounts for the spectral coloring and provides automated detection of tissue spectral signatures at a volumetric scale, which can open many possibilities for translational research.

Estimation of Contrast Agent Concentration in DCE-MRI Using 2 Flip Angles

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using 2 flip angles (FAs) with an ultrashort echo time during dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE)-magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for estimation of plasma gadolinium (Gd) concentration without using a precontrast longitudinal relaxation time T1 (T10) measurement.

METHODS

T1-weighted DCE-MRI experiments were carried out with C57BL/6J mice using the scan protocol with 2 FAs over 3 sequential segments during 1 scan. The data with 2 FAs were used to estimate T10 (T1T) during conversion of a time-intensity curve to the time-concentration curve. Three dosages of gadolinium-based contrast agent were used to achieve a wide range of variability in Gd concentrations when measured at 10 minutes postinjection: 0.05 mmol/kg (n = 6), 0.1 mmol/kg (n = 11), and 0.15 mmol/kg (n = 7). For comparison, the signal-to-concentration conversion was also conducted using the T10 measured from the precontrast scan (T1M) as well as a constant T10 (2.1 seconds) from the literature (T1C). The Gd concentrations ([Gd]) estimated using DCE-MRI data for the time of retro-orbital blood collection ([Gd]T1T, [Gd]T1M, and [Gd]T1C, respectively) were compared against the [Gd] of the blood samples measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry ([Gd]MS). In addition, contrast kinetic model analysis was conducted on mice with GL261 brain tumors (n = 5) using the 3 different methods for T10.

RESULTS

T1T strongly correlated with T1M (r = 0.81). [Gd]T1M and [Gd]T1T were significantly different from [Gd]T1C. [Gd]T1M and [Gd]T1T were in good agreement with [Gd]MS with strong correlations (mean percentage error ± standard deviation) of r = 0.70 (16% ± 56%) and r = 0.85 (15% ± 44%), respectively. In contrast, [Gd]T1C had a weak correlation of r = 0.52 with larger errors of 33% ± 24%. The contrast kinetic model parameters of GL261 brain tumors using T1T were not significantly different from those using T1M.

CONCLUSIONS

This study substantiates the feasibility of using the 2-FA approach during DCE-MRI scan to estimate [Gd] in the plasma without using an extra scan to perform precontrast T1 measurements.

Dynamic oxygen-17 MRI with adaptive temporal resolution using golden-means-based 3D radial sampling

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to develop a high-resolution 3D oxygen-17 (17 O) MRI method to delineate the kinetics of 17 O-enriched water (H217 O) across the entire mouse brain after a bolus injection via the tail vein.

METHODS

The dynamic 17 O signal was acquired with a golden-means-based 3D radial sampling scheme. To achieve adequate temporal resolution with preserved spatial resolution, a k-space-weighted view sharing strategy was used in image reconstruction with an adaptive window size tailored to the kinetics of the 17 O signal. Simulation studies were performed to determine the adequate image reconstruction parameters. The established method was applied to delineating the kinetics of intravenously injected H217 O in vivo in the post-stroke mouse brain.

RESULTS

The proposed dynamic 17 O-MRI method achieved an isotropic resolution of 1.21 mm (0.77 mm nominal) in mouse brain at 9.4T, with the temporal resolution increased gradually from 3 s at the initial phase of rapid signal increase to 15 s at the steady-state. The high spatial resolution enabled the delineation of the heterogeneous H217 O uptake and washout kinetics in stroke-affected mouse brain.

CONCLUSION

The current study demonstrated a 3D 17 O-MRI method for dynamic monitoring of 17 O signal changes with high spatial and temporal resolution. The method can be utilized to quantify physiological parameters such as cerebral blood flow and blood-brain barrier permeability by tracking injected H217 O. It can also be used to measure oxygen consumption rate in 17 O-oxygen inhalation studies.

Evaluation of metronomic chemotherapy response using diffusion and dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI

PURPOSE

To investigate the feasibility of using diffusion MRI (dMRI) and dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI to evaluate the treatment response of metronomic chemotherapy (MCT) in the 4T1 mammary tumor model of locally advanced breast cancer.

METHODS

Twelve Balb/c mice with metastatic breast cancer were divided into treated and untreated (control) groups. The treated group (n = 6) received five treatments of anti-metabolite agent 5-Fluorouracil (5FU) in the span of two weeks. dMRI and DCE-MRI were acquired for both treated and control groups before and after MCT. Immunohistochemically staining and measurements were performed after the post-MRI measurements for comparison.

RESULTS

The control mice had significantly (p<0.005) larger tumors than the MCT treated mice. The DCE-MRI analysis showed a decrease in contrast enhancement for the control group, whereas the MCT mice had a more stable enhancement between the pre-chemo and post-chemo time points. This confirms the antiangiogenic effects of 5FU treatment. Comparing amplitude of enhancement revealed a significantly (p<0.05) higher enhancement in the MCT tumors than in the controls. Moreover, the MCT uptake rate was significantly (p<0.001) slower than the controls. dMRI analysis showed the MCT ADC values were significantly larger than the control group at the post-scan time point.

CONCLUSION

dMRI and DCE-MRI can be used as potential biomarkers for assessing the treatment response of MCT. The MRI and pathology observations suggested that in addition to the cytotoxic effect of cell kills, the MCT with a cytotoxic drug, 5FU, induced changes in the tumor vasculature similar to the anti-angiogenic effect.

Toward precise arterial input functions derived from DCE-MRI through a novel extracorporeal circulation approach in mice

PURPOSE

Dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI can be used in pharmacokinetic models to quantify functional parameters such as perfusion and permeability. However, precise quantification in preclinical models is challenged by the difficulties to dynamically measure the true arterial blood contrast agent concentration. We propose a novel approach toward a precise and experimentally feasible method to derive the arterial input function from DCE-MRI in mice.

METHODS

Arterial blood was surgically shunted from the femoral artery to the tail vein and led through an extracorporeal circulation that resided on the head of brain tumor-bearing mice inside the FOV of a 9.4T MRI scanner. Dynamic 3D-FLASH scanning was performed after injection of gadobutrol with an effective resolution of 0.175 × 0.175 × 1 mm and a temporal resolution of 4 seconds. Pharmacokinetic modeling was performed using the extended Tofts and two-compartment exchange model.

RESULTS

Arterial input functions measured inside the extracorporeal circulation showed little noise, small interindividual variance, and typical curve shapes. Ex vivo and mass spectrometry validation measurements documented the influence of shunt flow velocity and hematocrit on estimation of contrast agent concentrations. Modeling of tumors and muscles allowed fitting of the recorded dynamic concentrations, resulting in quantitative plausible parameters.

CONCLUSION

The extracorporeal circulation allows deriving the contrast agent dynamics in arterial blood with high robustness and at acceptable experimental effort from DCE-MRI, previously not achievable in mice. It sets the basis for quantitative precise pharmacokinetic modeling in small animals to enhance the translatability of preclinical DCE-MRI measurements to patients.

Advances in Diffusion and Perfusion MRI for Quantitative Cancer Imaging

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

This article is to review recent technical developments and their clinical applications in cancer imaging quantitative measurement of cellular and vascular properties of the tumors.

RECENT FINDINGS

Rapid development of fast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technologies over last decade brought new opportunities in quantitative MRI methods to measure both cellular and vascular properties of tumors simultaneously.

SUMMARY

Diffusion MRI (dMRI) and dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE)-MRI have become widely used to assess the tissue structural and vascular properties, respectively. However, the ultimate potential of these advanced imaging modalities has not been fully exploited. The dependency of dMRI on the diffusion weighting gradient strength and diffusion time can be utilized to measure tumor perfusion, cellular structure, and cellular membrane permeability. Similarly, DCE-MRI can be used to measure vascular and cellular membrane permeability along with cellular compartment volume fractions. To facilitate the understanding of these potentially important methods for quantitative cancer imaging, we discuss the basic concepts and recent developments, as well as future directions for further development.

Estimation of cellular-interstitial water exchange in dynamic contrast enhanced MRI using two flip angles

PURPOSE

To investigate the feasibility of using multiple flip angles in dynamic contrast enhanced (DCE) MRI to reduce the uncertainty in estimation of intracellular water lifetime (τ_i ).

METHODS

Numerical simulation studies were conducted to assess the uncertainty in estimation of τ_i using dynamic contrast enhanced MRI with one or two flip angles. In vivo experiments with a murine brain tumor model were conducted at 7T using two flip angles. The in vivo data were used to compare τ_i estimation using the single-flip-angle (SFA) protocol with that using the double-flip-angle (DFA) protocol. Data analysis was conducted using the two-compartment exchange model combined with the three-site-two-exchange model for water exchange.

RESULTS

In the numerical simulation studies with a range of contrast kinetic parameters and signal-to-noise ratio = 20, the median bias of τ_i estimation decreased from 72 ms with SFA to 65 ms with DFA, and the corresponding median inter-quartile range reduced from 523 ms to 156 ms. In the in vivo studies, τ_i estimation with SFA was not successful in most voxels in the tumors, as the estimated τ_i values reached the upper limit of the parameter range (2 s). In contrast, the estimated τ_i values with DFA were mostly between 0.2 and 1.5 s and homogeneously distributed spatially across the tumor. The τ_i estimation with DFA was less sensitive to arterial input function scaling but more sensitive to pre-contrast T₁ than the other contrast kinetic parameters.

CONCLUSION

This study results demonstrate the feasibility of using multiple flip angles to encode the post-contrast time-intensity curve with different weighting of water exchange effect to reduce the uncertainty in τ_i estimation.

In vivo magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy. Technological advances and opportunities for applications continue to abound

Over the past decades, the field of in vivo magnetic resonance (MR) has built up an impressive repertoire of data acquisition and analysis technologies for anatomical, functional, physiological, and molecular imaging, the description of which requires many book volumes. As such it is impossible for a few authors to have an authoritative overview of the field and for a brief article to be inclusive. We will therefore focus mainly on data acquisition and attempt to give some insight into the principles underlying current advanced methods in the field and the potential for further innovation. In our view, the foreseeable future is expected to show continued rapid progress, for instance in imaging of microscopic tissue properties in vivo, assessment of functional and anatomical connectivity, higher resolution physiologic and metabolic imaging, and even imaging of receptor binding. In addition, acquisition speed and information content will continue to increase due to the continuous development of approaches for parallel imaging (including simultaneous multi-slice imaging), compressed sensing, and MRI fingerprinting. Finally, artificial intelligence approaches are becoming more realistic and will have a tremendous effect on both acquisition and analysis strategies. Together, these developments will continue to provide opportunity for scientific discovery and, in combination with large data sets from other fields such as genomics, allow the ultimate realization of precision medicine in the clinic.

Increased cerebral vascularization and decreased water exchange across the blood-brain barrier in aquaporin-4 knockout mice

Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) plays an important role in regulating water exchange across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and brain-cerebrospinal fluid interface. Studies on AQP-4 knockout mice (AQP4-KO) have reported considerable protection from brain edema induced by acute water intoxication and ischemic stroke, identifying AQP4 as a potential target for therapeutic interventions. However, the long-term effects of chronic AQP4 suppression are yet to be elucidated. In the current study, we evaluated the physiological and structural changes in adult AQP4-KO mice using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and immunohistochemical analysis. Water exchange across BBB was assessed by tracking an intravenous bolus injection of oxygen-17 (¹⁷O) water (H₂¹⁷O) using ¹⁷O-MRI. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) was quantified using arterial spin-labeling (ASL) MRI. Capillary density was determined by immunohistochemical staining for glucose transporter-1 (GLUT1). Compared to wildtype control mice, AQP4-KO mice showed a significant reduction in peak and steady-state H₂¹⁷O uptake despite unaltered CBF. Interestingly, a 22% increase in cortical capillary density was observed in AQP4-KO mice. These results suggest that increased cerebral vascularization may be an adaptive response to chronic reduction in water exchange across BBB in AQP4-KO mice.

[Elimination of Gibbs artifact based on local subpixel shift and interlaced local variation]

OBJECTIVE

To extend the application of Gibbs artifact reduction method that exploits local subvoxel- shifts (LSS) to zero- padded k-space magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data.

METHODS

We investigated two approaches to extending the application of LSS-based method to under-sampled data. The first approach, namely LSS+ interpolation, utilized the original LSS-based method to minimize the local variation on nonzero-padding reconstructed images, followed by image interpolation to obtain the final images. The second approach, interlaced local variation, used zero-padded Fourier transformation followed by elimination of Gibbs artifacts by minimizing a novel interlaced local variations (iLV) term. We compared the two methods with the original LSS and Hamming window filter algorithms, and verified their feasibility and robustness in phantom and in vivo data.

RESULTS

The two methods proposed showed better performance than the original LSS and Hamming window filters and effectively eliminated Gibbs artifacts while preserving the image details. Compared to LSS + interpolation method, iLV method better preserved the details of the images.

CONCLUSIONS

The iLV and LSS+interpolation methods proposed herein both extend the application of the original LSS method and can eliminate Gibbs artifacts in zero-filled k-space data reconstruction images, and iLV method shows a more prominent advantage in retaining the image details.

Ultrashort echo time magnetic resonance fingerprinting (UTE-MRF) for simultaneous quantification of long and ultrashort T2 tissues

PURPOSE

To demonstrate an ultrashort echo time magnetic resonance fingerprinting (UTE-MRF) method that allows quantifying relaxation times for muscle and bone in the musculoskeletal system and generating bone enhanced images that mimic CT scans.

METHODS

A fast imaging steady-state free precession MRF sequence with half pulse excitation and half projection readout was designed to sample fast T₂ decay signals. Varying echo time (TE) of a sinusoidal pattern was applied to enhance sensitivity for tissues with short and ultrashort T₂ values. The performance of UTE-MRF was evaluated via simulations, phantom, and in vivo experiments.

RESULTS

A minimal TE of 0.05 ms was achieved. Simulations indicated the sinusoidal TE sampling increased T₂ quantification accuracy in the cortical bone and tendon but had little impact on long T₂ muscle quantifications. For the rubber phantom, the averaged relaxometries from UTE-MRF (T₁ = 162 ms and T₂ = 1.07 ms) compared well with the gold standard (T₁ = 190 ms and T 2 ∗ = 1.03 ms). For the long T₂ agarose phantom, the linear regression slope between UTE-MRF and gold standard was 1.07 (R² = 0.991) for T₁ and 1.04 (R² = 0.994) for T₂ . In vivo experiments showed the detection of the cortical bone (averaged T₂ = 1.0 ms) and Achilles tendon (averaged T₂ = 15 ms). Scalp structures from the bone enhanced image show high similarity with CT.

CONCLUSION

The UTE-MRF with sinusoidal TEs can simultaneously quantify T₁ , T₂ , proton density, and B₀ in long, short, even ultrashort T₂ musculoskeletal structures. Bone enhanced images can be achieved in the brain with UTE-MRF.
