An orthogonal shim coil for 3T brain imaging

Balanced-force shim system for correcting magnetic-field inhomogeneities in the heart due to implanted cardioverter defibrillators

Background

In the US, 1.4 million people have implanted ICDs for reducing the risk of sudden death due to ventricular arrhythmias. Cardiac MRI (cMR) is of particular interest in the ICD patient population as cMR is the optimal imaging modality for distinguishing cardiac conditions that predispose to sudden death, and it is the best method to plan and guide therapy. However, all ICDs contain a ferromagnetic transformer which imposes a large inhomogeneous magnetic field in sections of the heart, creating large image voids that can mask important pathology. A shim system was devised to resolve these ICD issues. A shim coil system (CSS) that corrects ICD artifacts over a user-selected Region-of-Interest (ROI), was constructed and validated.

Methods

A shim coil was constructed that can project a large magnetic field for distances of ~15 cm. The shim-coil can be positioned safely anywhere within the scanner bore. The CSS includes a cantilevered beam to hold the shim coil. Remotely controlled MR-conditional motors allow 2 mm-accuracy three-dimensional shim-coil position. The shim coil is located above the subjects and the imaging surface-coils. Interaction of the shim coil with the scanner's gradients was eliminated with an amplifier that is in a constant current mode. Coupling with the scanners' radio-frequency (rf) coils, was reduced with shielding, low-pass filters, and cable shield traps. Software, which utilizes magnetic field (B0) mapping of the ICD inhomogeneity, computes the optimal location for the shim coil and its corrective current. ECG gated single- and multiple-cardiac-phase 2D GRE and SSFP sequences, as well as 3D ECG-gated respiratory-navigated IR-GRE (LGE) sequences were tested in phantoms and N = 3 swine with overlaid ICDs.

Results

With all cMR sequences, the system reduced artifacts from >100 ppm to <25 ppm inhomogeneity, which permitted imaging of the entire left ventricle in swine with ICD-related voids. Continuously acquired Gradient recalled echo or Steady State Free Precession images were used to interactively adjust the shim current and coil location.

Conclusion

The shim system reduced large field inhomogeneities due to implanted ICDs and corrected most ICD-related image distortions. Externally-controlled motorized translation of the shim coil simplified its utilization, supporting an efficient cardiac MRI workflow.

Prediction of motion induced magnetic fields for human brain MRI at 3 T

OBJECTIVE

Maps of B0 field inhomogeneities are often used to improve MRI image quality, even in a retrospective fashion. These field inhomogeneities depend on the exact head position within the static field but acquiring field maps (FM) at every position is time consuming. Here we propose a forward simulation strategy to obtain B0 predictions at different head-positions.

METHODS

FM were predicted by combining (1) a multi-class tissue model for estimation of tissue-induced fields, (2) a linear k-space model for capturing gradient imperfections, (3) a dipole estimation for quantifying lower-body perturbing fields (4) and a position-dependent tissue mask to model FM alterations caused by large motion effects. The performance of the combined simulation strategy was compared with an approach based on a rigid body transformation of the FM measured in the reference position to the new position.

RESULTS

The transformed FM provided inconsistent results for large head movements (> 5° rotation, approximately), while the simulation strategy had a superior prediction accuracy for all positions. The simulated FM was used to optimize B0 shims with up to 22.2% improvement with respect to the transformed FM approach.

CONCLUSION

The proposed simulation strategy is able to predict movement-induced B0 field inhomogeneities yielding more precise estimates of the ground truth field homogeneity than the transformed FM.

Shim Coils Tailored for Correcting B0 Inhomogeneity in the Human Brain (SCOTCH): Design Methodology and 48-Channel Prototype Assessment in 7-Tesla MRI

Increased static field inhomogeneities are a burden for human brain MRI at Ultra-High-Field. In particular they cause enhanced Echo-Planar image distortions and signal losses due to magnetic susceptibility gradients at air-tissue interfaces in the subject's head. In the past decade, Multi-Coil Arrays (MCA) have been proposed to shim the field in the brain better than the 2nd or 3rd order Spherical Harmonic (SH) coils usually offered by MRI manufacturers. Here we present a novel MCA, named SCOTCH, optimized for whole brain shimming. Based on a cylindrical structure, it features several layers of small coils whose shape, size and location are found from a principal component analysis of ideal stream functions computed from an internal 100-brain fieldmap database. From an Open-Access external database of 126 brains, our SCOTCH implementation is shown to be equivalent to a partial 7th-order SH system with unlimited power, outperforming all known existing MCA prototypes. This result is further confirmed by a low-cost  30-cm diameter SCOTCH prototype built with 48 coils on 3 layers, and tested on 7 volunteers at 7T with a parallel-transmit RF coil made to be inserted in SCOTCH. Echo-Planar images of the subject brains before and after SCOTCH shimming show large signal recoveries, especially in the prefrontal cortex.

Physical limits to human brain B0 shimming with spherical harmonics, engineering implications thereof

OBJECTIVE

As the MRI main magnetic field rises for improved signal-to-noise ratio, susceptibility-induced B0-inhomogeneity increases proportionally, aggravating related artifacts. Considering only susceptibility disparities between air and biological tissue, we explore the topological conditions for which perfect shimming could be performed in a Region of Interest (ROI) such as the human brain or part thereof.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

After theoretical considerations for perfect shimming, spherical harmonic (SH) shimming simulations of very high degree are performed, based on a 100-subject database of 1.7-mm-resolved brain fieldmaps acquired at 3T . In addition to the whole brain, shimmed ROIs include slabs targeting the prefrontal cortex, both or single temporal lobes, or spheres in the frontal brain above the nasal sinus.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

We show "perfect" SH shimming is possible only if the ROI can be contained in a sphere that does not enclose sources of magnetic field inhomogeneity, which are gathered at the air-tissue interface. We establish a [Formula: see text]Hz inhomogeneity hard shim limit at 7T for whole brain SH shimming, that can only be attained at shimming degree higher than 90. On the other hand, under limited power and SH degree resources, 3D region-specific shimming is shown to greatly improve homogeneity in critical zones such as the prefrontal cortex and around ear canals.

Recent Advances in Radio-Frequency Coil Technologies: Flexible, Wireless, and Integrated Coil Arrays

Radio-frequency (RF) coils are to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners what eyes are to the human body. Because of their critical importance, there have been constant innovations driving the rapid development of RF coil technologies. Over the past four decades, the breadth and depth of the RF coil technology evolution have far exceeded the space allowed for this review article. However, these past developments have laid the very foundation on which some of the recent technical breakthroughs are built upon. Here, we narrow our focus on some of the most recent RF coil advances, specifically, on flexible, wireless, and integrated coil arrays. To provide a detailed review, we discuss the theoretical underpinnings, experimental implementations, promising results, as well as future outlooks covering these exciting topics. These recent innovations have greatly improved patient comfort and ease of scan, while also increasing the signal-to-noise ratio, image resolution, temporal throughput, and diagnostic and treatment accuracy. Together with advances in other MRI subfields, they will undoubtedly continue to drive the field forward and lead us to an ever more exciting future. A 31-channel integrated "AC/DC" B0 shim and radiofrequency receive array coil for improved 7T MRI

PURPOSE

To test an integrated "AC/DC" array approach at 7T, where B0 inhomogeneity poses an obstacle for functional imaging, diffusion-weighted MRI, MR spectroscopy, and other applications.

METHODS

A close-fitting 7T 31-channel (31-ch) brain array was constructed and tested using combined Rx and ΔB0 shim channels driven by a set of rapidly switchable current amplifiers. The coil was compared to a shape-matched 31-ch reference receive-only array for RF safety, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and inter-element noise correlation. We characterize the coil array's ability to provide global and dynamic (slice-optimized) shimming using ΔB0 field maps and echo planar imaging (EPI) acquisitions.

RESULTS

The SNR and average noise correlation were similar to the 31-ch reference array. Global and slice-optimized shimming provide 11% and 40% improvements respectively compared to baseline second-order spherical harmonic shimming. Birdcage transmit coil efficiency was similar for the reference and AC/DC array setups.

CONCLUSION

Adding ΔB0 shim capability to a 31-ch 7T receive array can significantly boost 7T brain B0 homogeneity without sacrificing the array's rdiofrequency performance, potentially improving ultra-high field neuroimaging applications that are vulnerable to off-resonance effects.

Distortion-free, high-isotropic-resolution diffusion MRI with gSlider BUDA-EPI and multicoil dynamic B0 shimming

PURPOSE

We combine SNR-efficient acquisition and model-based reconstruction strategies with newly available hardware instrumentation to achieve distortion-free in vivo diffusion MRI of the brain at submillimeter-isotropic resolution with high fidelity and sensitivity on a clinical 3T scanner.

METHODS

We propose blip-up/down acquisition (BUDA) for multishot EPI using interleaved blip-up/blip-down phase encoding and incorporate B₀ forward-modeling into structured low-rank reconstruction to enable distortion-free and navigator-free diffusion MRI. We further combine BUDA-EPI with an SNR-efficient simultaneous multislab acquisition (generalized slice-dithered enhanced resolution ["gSlider"]), to achieve high-isotropic-resolution diffusion MRI. To validate gSlider BUDA-EPI, whole-brain diffusion data at 860-μm and 780-μm data sets were acquired. Finally, to improve the conditioning and minimize noise penalty in BUDA reconstruction at very high resolutions where B₀ inhomogeneity can have a detrimental effect, the level of B₀ inhomogeneity was reduced by incorporating slab-by-slab dynamic shimming with a 32-channel AC/DC coil into the acquisition. Whole-brain 600-μm diffusion data were then acquired with this combined approach of gSlider BUDA-EPI with dynamic shimming.

RESULTS

The results of 860-μm and 780-μm datasets show high geometry fidelity with gSlider BUDA-EPI. With dynamic shimming, the BUDA reconstruction's noise penalty was further alleviated. This enables whole-brain 600-μm isotropic resolution diffusion imaging with high image quality.

CONCLUSIONS

The gSlider BUDA-EPI method enables high-quality, distortion-free diffusion imaging across the whole brain at submillimeter resolution, where the use of multicoil dynamic B₀ shimming further improves reconstruction performance, which can be particularly useful at very high resolutions.

Dynamic B0 shimming for multiband imaging using high order spherical harmonic shims

PURPOSE

To describe and implement a strategy for dynamic slice-by-slice and multiband B₀ shimming using spherical harmonic shims in the human brain at 7T.

THEORY

For thin axial slices, spherical harmonic shims can be divided into pairs of shims (z-degenerate and non-z-degenerate) that are spatially degenerate, such that only ½ of the shims (non-z-degenerate) are required for single slice optimizations. However, when combined, the pairs of shims can be used to simultaneously generate the same in-plane symmetries but with different amplitudes as a function of their z location. This enables multiband shimming equivalent to that achievable by single slice-by-slice optimization.

METHODS

All data were acquired at 7T using a spherical harmonic shim insert enabling shimming up through 4th order with two additional 5th order shims (1st-4th+). Dynamic shim updating was achieved using a 10A shim power supply with 2 ms ramps and constrained optimizations to minimize eddy currents.

RESULTS

In groups of eight subjects, we demonstrated that: 1) dynamic updating using 1st-4th+ order shims reduced the SD of the B₀ field over the whole brain from 32.4 ± 2.6 and 24.9 ± 2 Hz with 1st-2nd and 1st-4th+ static global shimming to 15.1 ± 1.7 Hz; 2) near equivalent performance was achieved when dynamically updating only the non-z-degenerate shims (14.3 ± 1.5 Hz), or when a using multiband shim factor of 2, MB_s = 2, and all shims (14.4 ± 2.0 Hz).

CONCLUSION

High order spherical harmonics provide substantial improvements over static global shimming and enable dynamic multiband shimming with near equivalent performance to that of dynamic slice-by-slice shimming. This reduces distortion in echo planar imaging.
