Improved motion correction in brain MRI using 3D radial trajectory and projection moment analysis

PURPOSE

To develop a generalized rigid body motion correction method in 3D radial brain MRI to deal with continuous motion pattern through projection moment analysis.

METHODS

An assumption was made that the multichannel coil moves with the head, which was achieved by using a flexible head coil. A two-step motion correction scheme was proposed to directly extract the motion parameters from the acquired k-space data using the analysis of center-of-mass with high noise robustness, which were used for retrospective motion correction. A recursive least-squares model was introduced to recursively estimate the motion parameters for every single spoke, which used the smoothness of motion and resulted in high temporal resolution and low computational cost. Five volunteers were scanned at 3 T using a 3D radial multidimensional golden-means trajectory with instructed motion patterns. The performance was tested through both simulation and in vivo experiments. Quantitative image quality metrics were calculated for comparison.

RESULTS

The proposed method showed good accuracy and precision in both translation and rotation estimation. A better result was achieved using the proposed two-step correction compared to traditional one-step correction without significantly increasing computation time. Retrospective correction showed substantial improvements in image quality among all scans, even for stationary scans.

CONCLUSIONS

The proposed method provides an easy, robust, and time-efficient tool for motion correction in brain MRI, which may benefit clinical diagnosis of uncooperative patients as well as scientific MRI researches.

Cramér-Rao Bound Optimized Subspace Reconstruction in Quantitative MRI

We extend the traditional framework for estimating subspace bases that maximize the preserved signal energy to additionally preserve the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) of the biophysical parameters and, ultimately, improve accuracy and precision in the quantitative maps. To this end, we introduce an approximate compressed CRB based on orthogonalized versions of the signal's derivatives with respect to the model parameters. This approximation permits singular value decomposition (SVD)-based minimization of both the CRB and signal losses during compression. Compared to the traditional SVD approach, the proposed method better preserves the CRB across all biophysical parameters with negligible cost to the preserved signal energy, leading to reduced bias and variance of the parameter estimates in simulation. In vivo, improved accuracy and precision are observed in two quantitative neuroimaging applications, permitting the use of smaller basis sizes in subspace reconstruction and offering significant computational savings.

Synthetic MR: Physical principles, clinical implementation, and new developments

Current clinical MR imaging practices rely on the qualitative assessment of images for diagnosis and treatment planning. While contrast in MR images is dependent on the spin parameters of the imaged tissue, pixel values on MR images are relative and are not scaled to represent any tissue properties. Synthetic MR is a fully featured imaging workflow consisting of efficient multiparameter mapping acquisition, synthetic image generation, and volume quantitation of brain tissues. As the application becomes more widely available on multiple vendors and scanner platforms, it has also gained widespread adoption as clinicians begin to recognize the benefits of rapid quantitation. This review will provide details about the sequence with a focus on the physical principles behind its relaxometry mechanisms. It will present an overview of the products in their current form and some potential issues when implementing it in the clinic. Three-dimensional simultaneous brain mapping of T1, T2, T2∗ and magnetic susceptibility with MR Multitasking

PURPOSE

To develop a new technique that enables simultaneous quantification of whole-brain T1 , T2 , T 2 ∗ , as well as susceptibility and synthesis of six contrast-weighted images in a single 9.1-minute scan.

METHODS

The technique uses hybrid T2 -prepared inversion-recovery pulse modules and multi-echo gradient-echo readouts to collect k-space data with various T1, T2, and T 2 ∗ weightings. The underlying image is represented as a six-dimensional low-rank tensor consisting of three spatial dimensions and three temporal dimensions corresponding to T1 recovery, T2 decay, and multi-echo behaviors, respectively. Multiparametric maps were fitted from reconstructed image series. The proposed method was validated on phantoms and healthy volunteers, by comparing quantitative measurements against corresponding reference methods. The feasibility of generating six contrast-weighted images was also examined.

RESULTS

High quality, co-registered T1 , T2 , and T 2 ∗ susceptibility maps were generated that closely resembled the reference maps. Phantom measurements showed substantial consistency (R2 > 0.98) with the reference measurements. Despite the significant differences of T1 (p < .001), T2 (p = .002), and T 2 ∗ (p = 0.008) between our method and the references for in vivo studies, excellent agreement was achieved with all intraclass correlation coefficients greater than 0.75. No significant difference was found for susceptibility (p = .900). The framework is also capable of synthesizing six contrast-weighted images.

CONCLUSION

The MR Multitasking-based 3D brain mapping of T1 , T2 , T 2 ∗ , and susceptibility agrees well with the reference and is a promising technique for multicontrast and quantitative imaging.
