Abstract
BACKGROUND Bladder diaries represent a fundamental component in the assessment of patients presenting with lower urinary tract symptoms. Nevertheless, their importance often remains underappreciated and undervalued within clinical practice. This paper aims to conduct a comprehensive review of the existing literature concerning the utility of bladder diaries, underscore the criticality of their precision, elucidate the factors contributing to noncompliance with bladder diary completion, and investigate potential strategies for enhancing patient compliance. MATERIALS AND METHODS A review of the English-language scientific literature available in the domains of Medline, Embase, Emcare, Midirs, and Cinahl was conducted. This was supplemented by discussion at the International Consultation on Incontinence Research Society Proposal session to define knowledge and identify gaps in knowledge surrounding the utility of bladder diaries. The existing evidence and outcome of the relevant discussion held in the meeting are presented. RESULTS Bladder diaries (BD) serve to characterize the nature and severity of storage lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and provide an objective record of an individual's urination patterns. They aid in the refinement and customization of treatment strategies based on the clinical responses documented in the diary, optimizing treatment outcomes. Notably, both BD and urodynamic studies (UDS) play complementary yet distinct roles in LUTS evaluation. BD offers a more comprehensive and accessible approach to assessing specific storage LUTS, particularly due to their affordability and widespread availability, especially in resource-limited settings. Nevertheless, the absence of a standardized BD format across global healthcare systems presents a significant challenge. Despite being recognized as reliable, noninvasive, validated, and cost-effective tools for evaluating patients with LUTS, the implementation and completion of BD have proven to be complex. The introduction of automated bladder diaries heralds an era of precise, real-time data collection, potentially enhancing the patient-clinician relationship. Completion of bladder diaries depends on an array of individual, social, and healthcare-specific factors. Compliance with bladder diary completion could be enhanced with clear instructions, patient education, regular follow-ups and positive re-enforcement. This study has identified four critical areas for future research: Addressing healthcare disparities between affluent and developing nations, enhancing the current functionality and effectiveness of bladder diaries, exploring the feasibility of incorporating bladder diaries into the treatment and education process and improving the quality and functionality of existing bladder diaries. CONCLUSION Bladder diaries play a pivotal role in the evaluation and management of patients with LUTS, providing a holistic perspective. When their complete potential is harnessed, they have the capacity to revolutionize the paradigm of LUTS management, ushering in a patient-centered era of care.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To develop a feasible smartphone urinary diary application (UDA), and evaluate reliability and patient acceptability as a collection, calculation, and sharing tool. MATERIALS AND METHODS We developed the UDA for smartphones, which collects voiding, leakage, fluid intake, and grade of urgency data. A two-way cross-sectional study was conducted with 60 participants, participants split into two groups. Thirty participants completed UDA for 3 days either preceded or followed by a standard paper diary. We assessed the paper app reliability of the UDA with the Kappa variable and internal correlation coefficient (ICC). RESULTS 29 (96.6%) participants completed the 3-day UDA in the first phase, 92.6% in the second phase, in comparison to 90% and 79.4% in paper form, respectively. Incomplete variable recording was observed at 10.3%-20% in the UDA group in comparison to 33.3%-34.8 % in the PF group. Of the 48 participants who experienced both diaries, 40 (83.3%) preferred the UDA. Paper app correlation was good to very good with ICC ranging from 0.60 to 0.90 for all variables (p < 0.001). Kappa values for incontinence, stress incontinence, urge incontinence, and increased frequency were 0.95, 0.94, 0.82 0.87, and 0.54; respectively (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION The performance of developed smartphone UDA is comparable with and highly correlated with paper form with most users finding the app feasible. Convergent validity with urinary incontinence and other lower urinary tract dysfunctions is required.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Voiding diaries are clinically useful tools for elucidating the etiology of lower urinary tract symptoms. The utility of voiding diaries is challenged by low return rate and incomplete or inaccurate data entry. OBJECTIVE The objective was to determine the effect of the use of an educational video on patient adherence, completeness of intake and voiding diaries, and patient satisfaction. STUDY DESIGN In this trial, patients who were asked to complete an intake and voiding diary in a urogynecology clinic were randomized to receive standard education or enhanced education with an instructional video on how to complete the diary. Patients returned the diaries at their follow-up visits in the clinic. The primary outcome was the return rate of the diaries. Upon follow-up, patients filled out a survey reporting their satisfaction with instructions received. Diaries were graded by 3 blinded experts. RESULTS Eighty-five patients were enrolled, 42 in the standardized instructions arm and 43 in the video arm. A total of 26 patients (30.6%) filled out and returned an intake and voiding diary. Between groups, there was no difference in the rate of return of the diaries ( P = 0.59) or in completeness of the returned voiding diaries ( P = 0.60). The educational video did not change satisfaction between the groups; patients reported identical satisfaction between groups. CONCLUSIONS The addition of an instructional video on how to complete an intake and voiding diary did not increase patients' rate of return, completeness of diaries, or satisfaction with instructions provided to complete the diary.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A voiding diary (VD) is a key element in the evaluation of patients with overactive bladder (OAB) at initial presentation and during treatment to assess its effectiveness. In order to be clinically relevant, it must be performed over 3 days according to the International Continence Society (ICS). Unfortunately, some patients find it cumbersome. We aimed to evaluate the reliability and patient satisfaction when using a connected tank device. MATERIAL AND METHOD We conducted a single-center prospective study including 41 patients. Each patient completed a paper voiding diary and then a diary with Diary Pod® (DP) or inversely depending on the study arm. Data from 34 patients were collected. After completion of both diaries, patients completed a satisfaction questionnaire sent by email via GoogleForm. Study statistics were performed with Jamovi® and Excel® software. RESULT Data from 34 patients were analyzed. There was a statically significant difference (P=0.046) between the mean volume calculated from the paper VD and that calculated from the connected VD (DP). There was no statistically significant difference (P=0.112) between the mean number of daytime voids, mean number of nighttime voids (P=0.156), mean water intake (P=0.183) reported on the paper VD and the connected VD. Thirteen (42%) paper VD and 1 connected VD did not include documentation of the presence or absence of urine leakage or urgency. There was no statistically significant difference between the two calendars regarding the presence or absence of urine leakage (P=0.180) and urinary urgency (P=0.564). Eighty-four percent (26/31) preferred the connected tank to the usual method (paper/pen), while 55% (17/31) and 29% (9/31) of the participants respectively answered that the DP was "very definitely" or "definitely" an aid for performing VD. Nevertheless, 39% (12/31) and 55% (17/31) considered its price to be high or fair and only 22% (7/31) were inclined to buy it. CONCLUSION This study showed that the Diary connected reservoir Pod® is a reliable and innovative tool for voiding schedules. It facilitates data collection for the majority of patients (83%) and could, through better patient compliance, provide better quality data and help their interpretation by the physician. These factors could encourage the implementation of the connected voiding diary as a diagnostic tool. It would also be used for the assessment of treatment effectiveness in daily clinical practice as well as in research. Its cost remains a major obstacle, judged by 39% of patients to be too high, and could therefore be proposed in specific situations requiring precise data.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Post-COVID-19 condition (PCC), colloquially known as long COVID, is a multisystem condition characterized by persistent symptoms beyond 4 weeks after the SARS-CoV-2 infection. More than 60 million people with PCC worldwide need prompt assessment, diagnosis, and monitoring, with many requiring specialist help from a multidisciplinary team of health care professionals (HCPs). Consequently, a scalable digital system is required for both people with PCC and HCPs to capture the breadth of symptoms and their impact on health, using patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and patient-reported experience measures (PREMs). OBJECTIVE We aim to develop and implement a novel PCC digital PROM (DPROM) platform for (1) securely collecting PROM and PREM data from people with PCC, (2) enabling users to monitor symptoms longitudinally and assess response to treatment, (3) generating reports for the electronic health records (EHRs), (4) providing summary reports on PCC services based on national requirements, and (5) facilitating the sharing of relevant data with authorized research teams to accelerate our understanding of this new condition and evaluate new strategies to manage PCC. METHODS We (1) undertook requirement analysis with people with PCC, HCPs, and researchers to identify the needs of the DPROM platform and determine its required functionalities; (2) designed and developed a clinically useful web portal for staff and a mobile app for patients, with a web-based alternative app to improve patient and staff choice, limit the risk of digital exclusion, and account for variability across services; (3) determined the PROMs and PREMs that PCC services would prefer to use on the platform; and (4) designed the summary report function that can be generated for each user for the EHR and for reporting to national health authorities. RESULTS A DPROM platform to record PCC symptom profile, condition severity, functional disability, and quality of life, based on the C19-YRS (Yorkshire Rehabilitation Scale) and other PROMs and PREMs, was developed. Individual-level medical information and details on the COVID-19 illness can be captured systematically. The platform generates easy-to-understand scores, radar plots and line graphs for people with PCC to self-monitor their condition and for HCPs to assess the natural course of the condition and the response to interventions. Clinics can configure a suite of PROMs and PREMs based on their local and national service and commissioning requirements and support research studies which require large-scale data collection on PROMs. The DPROM platform enables automatic aggregate data analysis for services to undertake service evaluation and cost-effectiveness analysis. The DPROM platform generated summary report can be uploaded to the EHRs of people with PCC. CONCLUSIONS A multifunctional DPROM platform to assess, grade, and monitor PCC has been developed. Future research will analyze the system's usability in specialist PCC clinical services and other long-term conditions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lower urinary tract symptoms affect a large number of people of all ages and sexes. The clinical assessment typically involves a bladder diary and uroflowmetry test. Conventional paper-based diaries are affected by low patient compliance, whereas in-clinic uroflowmetry measurement face challenges such as patient stress and inconvenience factors. Home uroflowmetry and automated bladder diaries are believed to overcome these limitations. OBJECTIVE In this study, we present our first-year experience of managing urological patients using Minze homeflow, which combines home uroflowmetry and automated bladder diaries. Our objective was 2-fold: first, to provide a description of the reasons for using homeflow and second, to compare the data obtained from homeflow with the data obtained from in-clinic uroflowmetry (hospiflow). METHODS A descriptive retrospective analysis was conducted using Minze homeflow between July 2019 and July 2020 at a tertiary university hospital. The device comprises a Bluetooth-connected gravimetric uroflowmeter, a patient smartphone app, and a cloud-based clinician portal. Descriptive statistics, Bland-Altman plots, the McNemar test, and the Wilcoxon signed rank test were used for data analysis. RESULTS The device was offered to 166 patients, including 91 pediatric and 75 adult patients. In total, 3214 homeflows and 129 hospiflows were recorded. Homeflow proved valuable for diagnosis, particularly in cases where hospiflow was unreliable or unsuccessful, especially in young children. It confirmed or excluded abnormal hospiflow results and provided comprehensive data with multiple measurements taken at various bladder volumes, urge levels, and times of the day. As a result, we found that approximately one-fourth of the patients with abnormal flow curves in the clinic had normal bell-shaped flow curves at home. Furthermore, homeflow offers the advantage of providing an individual's plot of maximum flow rate (Q-max) versus voided volume as well as an average or median result. Our findings revealed that a considerable percentage of patients (22/76, 29% for pediatric patients and 24/50, 48% for adult patients) had a Q-max measurement from hospiflow falling outside the range of homeflow measurements. This discrepancy may be attributed to the unnatural nature of the hospiflow test, resulting in nonrepresentative uroflow curves and an underestimation of Q-max, as confirmed by the Bland-Altman plot analysis. The mean difference for Q-max was -3.1 mL/s (with an upper limit of agreement of 13 mL/s and a lower limit of agreement of -19.2 mL/s), which was statistically significant (Wilcoxon signed rank test: V=2019.5; P<.001). Given its enhanced reliability, homeflow serves as a valuable tool not only for diagnosis but also for follow-up, allowing for the evaluation of treatment effectiveness and home monitoring of postoperative and recurrent interventions. CONCLUSIONS Our first-year experience with Minze homeflow demonstrated its feasibility and usefulness in the diagnosis and follow-up of various patient categories. Homeflow provided more reliable and comprehensive voiding data compared with hospiflow.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS The objectives of this study are (1) to assess practice patterns among urogynecology/female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery (FPMRS) providers regarding the use of bladder diaries (BD) and (2) to review the literature regarding BD. METHODS For the first objective, a survey was emailed to United States-based urogynecology providers in 2019 querying frequency of use of bladder diaries (FBD), indications, problems, patient education methods, and perception of utility. Chi-square tests and multiple logistic regression were performed. For the second objective, we reviewed literature published in English by searching the terms "voiding," "bladder," or "incontinence," in combination with "diary," "log," or "questionnaire." RESULTS A total of 371 of 851 (43.5%) contacted providers responded. Nearly 80% were attending physicians, 75.5% of whom completed the FPMRS fellowship; 20.8% of all respondents and nearly 25% of fellowship-trained attendings reported FBD <20% in the last year. FPMRS providers were more likely to report FBD >80%. A total of 97.5% of respondents cited difficulty in using BD. Most (71.6%) taught patients to use BD themselves or shared responsibility with a nonphysician staff member (53.4%). BD is a validated and valuable instrument; however, there are obstacles to its use. Despite recent innovations including electronic and automated BD, there is a paucity of data regarding the provider-viewed challenges in implementing BD. CONCLUSIONS The literature supports the use of BD; however, many survey respondents, including fellowship-trained attendings, never or rarely use BD. Most respondents reported difficulty in using BD. More research is needed to improve the ease, accuracy, and widespread adaptation of BD use in clinical practice.

Abstract
Objective Frequency voiding charts are commonly used to gain better insight into the voiding and drinking behaviours of patients with voiding symptoms. Non-compliance when filling out a chart is known to be high. The use of a digital application might increase adherence, but little research has been conducted on this topic. The aim of this study is to compare the quality (number of correctly filled out charts) and quantity (number of complete charts) of digital versus paper frequency voiding charts among children and their parents. Methods A multi-centre parallel randomised controlled trial was conducted. Participants were assigned either a 48-h digital frequency voiding chart or a 48-h paper frequency voiding chart. Completion rates were scored based on a predefined scoring method and transcribed into a percentage. Secondary objectives included user friendliness, feasibility, degree of the child's participation, and attractiveness. Trail registry data: NTR NL9383. Results Ninety-seven patients were randomised to either a digital (N = 53) or paper (N = 44) frequency voiding chart. No significant difference in complete and accurately filled out frequency voiding charts was seen between the groups, with 35% (N = 18) for digital and 50% (N = 22) for paper, p = 0.12. Subjects considered the digital application more appealing, more educative, and more inviting compared to the paper chart (p < 0.05). Conclusions In this underpowered study, no significant difference appeared between the groups in the number of complete and accurately filled out frequency voiding charts. Implementation of e-health did not seem to improve compliance. In daily practice, personal preference might offer the best solution.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Urine flowmetry (UF) is a key non-invasive urodynamic test for the evaluation of the voiding phase in patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). Traditional free urodynamic testing (FUT) performed on a one-time basis in the office is limited by difficulty in capturing normal voiding and high intrapatient variability in urine flow parameters. Home measurement of urine flow by the patient could be a way to obtain multiple data in real-life conditions, addressing its limitations. The objective of this article was to review the literature on the different techniques of home uroflowmetry (HUF) and their clinical interest in comparison with FUT. MATERIAL AND METHODS A search on the PubMed database using the key words "Urodynamics, Uroflowmetry, non-invasive urodynamics, Ambulatory urodynamics, bladder outlet obstruction, male LUTS" was performed to find articles in English or French that had been published with no time limit and March 2022. The sorting by reading the abstract allowed the selection of all articles describing and/or evaluating a HUF technique that were read entirely according to the same collection grid to propose a narrative synthesis. RESULTS Thirty-one articles were identified, selected, and analyzed. Simple and inexpensive techniques by timing or use of funnels reliably and reproducibly estimate the average and maximum urine flow in relation to the FUT, without providing a complete flow curve. More sophisticated electronic or sonometric methods, some using connected mobile applications, present results that are more consistent with ICS recommendations for flow measurement. With the possibility of studying the average of several values of the maximum urinary flow (Qmax) captured during micturition in physiological conditions, some studies suggest a gain in diagnostic value in the evaluation of the emptying phase and lower urinary tract symptoms in men. However, the literature is sparse, old and the clinical benefits are not yet proven. CONCLUSION There is a wide range of techniques for measuring urine flow in the patient's home, all of which aim to fill the gaps in conventional urine flow measurement. Further studies are needed to demonstrate the acceptability of this type of measurement by patients, the existence of a real clinical benefit, to assess the cost/benefit balance and finally to define a possible place for home uroflowmetry in daily practice, compared with traditional free flowmetry and invasive urodynamics (pressure-flow test).

Abstract
Objectives To evaluate the usefulness of a novel acoustic uroflowmetry- (UFM-) based mobile application (app) voiding diary (VD) focusing on the (1) compliance and (2) correlation with a conventional paper-based VD. Materials and Methods A total of 78 patients were included between December 2019 and June 2020, and a subsequent review of all data was performed. The analyzed data were as follows: (1) survey of convenience/satisfaction/preference comparing the two methods, (2) compliance regarding the completeness of both methods, and (3) correlation of each metric (24-hour urine volume, nocturnal urine volume, nocturnal polyuria index, total number of voids, number of daytime voids, number of nocturnal voids, and maximal bladder capacity) between the two methods. Results The survey results of convenience, satisfaction, and preference were as follows. With regard to convenience and satisfaction area, higher scores are reported in the mobile app VD (mean ± standard deviation (SD); convenience: 7.47 ± 2.19 [app] vs. 4.20 ± 2.49 [paper]; satisfaction: 7.36 ± 2.17 [app] vs. 5.07 ± 2.65 [paper]). The median score of the overall preference for using the mobile app instead of the paper-based VD was 9 out of 10 (mean ± SD7.82 ± 2.68). We also found a good correlation between the two methods for nocturnal urine volume (r = 0.55, p = 0.04), nocturnal polyuria index (r = 0.66, p = 0.23), total number of voids (r = 0.9, p = 0.02), number of nocturnal voids (r = 0.83, p = 0.02), and maximal bladder capacity (r = 0.89, p = 0.04). Conclusion The acoustic UFM-based mobile app VD demonstrated favorable findings compared to the conventional paper-based VD.

Abstract
AIM To validate an electronic 3-day bladder diary (BD) as an easy-to-use app for smart-phone (eDM3d). METHODS Descriptive and cross-sectional prospective study. One hundred and thirty-six patients with overactive bladder syndrome (OABs) or nocturia who had a smart-phone and attended the urology clinics of a tertiary hospital from June to November 2017 were included. Patients filled the eDM3d (test) and the Spanish validated paper BD (DM3d) and questionnaires ICIQ-UISF and BASQ during the first week. Two weeks later, they repeated the eDM3d (retest). We assessed feasibility of the eDM3d (percentage of variables completed), test-retest reliability (qualitative variables: McNemar test; quantitative variables: ICC), paper-app correlation (qualitative variables: Kappa index; quantitative variables: ICC) and convergent validity (correlation between eDM3d and questionnaires, Spearman's rank test). Patients answered a question about satisfaction: "If you had to repeat a BD again, would you choose paper or the app version?" RESULTS One hundred and twenty-three (90.4%) participants completed all the variables of the first eDM3d. There were no significant differences in the proportion of patients classified as positive for each symptom between test and retest. ICC ranged from 0.73 to 0.94 for all variables (P < 0.001) in the test-retest assessment. Paper-app correlation was good to excellent for all variables (ICC 0.76-0.95, P < 0.001; Kappa index 0.56-0.84, P < 0.001). Correlation between the eDM3d and the questionnaires ranged from 0.23 to 0.6 (P < 0.01). 120 (88.2%) patients would choose the eDM3d if they had to repeat a BD. CONCLUSION The eDM3d presents suitable feasibility, reliability, and validity to assess patients with OABs or nocturia who have a smart-phone.

Abstract
AIMS To develop a 3 day bladder diary (BD) as an easy-to-use application for smart-phone (eDM3d). To test its feasibility and acceptance in a reduced number of patients. METHODS An external agency developed the eDM3d following the structure of the Spanish validated 3 day BD (DM3d©), which includes a frequency-volume chart, the assessment of the grade of urgency, the incontinence events and fluid intake. The eDM3d consisted in a main interface of four buttons ("wake up," "go to bed," "urinate," "drink") which had to be clicked to create an event. Results were automatically transferred to an internet server to obtain an electronic report. We recruited 25 patients with overactive bladder syndrome or nocturia and previous experience on paper BD. They were asked to complete the eDM3d. Finally, a direct question about satisfaction was answered: "If you had to complete a BD again, would you choose the paper or the app version?" RESULTS Three patients (12%) did not complete the eDM3d, 1 patient (4%) completed 2 days of the eDM3d and did not register volumes of micturition nor fluid intake, 1 patient (4%) completed all 2 days variables and 20 patients (80%) completed all 3 day variables. Regarding satisfaction, 19 patients (86.4%) would choose the app version, 2 patients (9.1%) would choose a paper version and 1 patient (4.5%) would choose either indistinctly. CONCLUSIONS The eDM3d is a useful tool easily filled in by patients with a high satisfaction rate. Adequate validation of the eDM3d is required.

Abstract
Voiding dysfunction is a common disease that contributes to a lower quality of life and has an increased prevalence in the elderly population. Noninvasive and objective methods such as uroflowmetry (UFM) and voiding diaries (VDs) are essential for exact diagnosis and effective treatment of this condition because patients with different causes of voiding dysfunction can complain of the same lower urinary tract symptoms. Further, different treatment options can be determined based on the diagnosis made from these symptoms. In order to improve the quality of UFM and VDs and to provide a convenient testing environment, several advances have been made by previous investigators. In this study, we investigate the history and technological mechanisms of UFM and VDs. We also aim to review UFM from the viewpoint of clinical and at-home uses, including the recently proposed toilet-shaped UFM and electronic VDs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Self-administered survey questionnaires are an important data collection tool in clinical practice, public health research and epidemiology. They are ideal for achieving a wide geographic coverage of the target population, dealing with sensitive topics and are less resource-intensive than other data collection methods. These survey questionnaires can be delivered electronically, which can maximise the scalability and speed of data collection while reducing cost. In recent years, the use of apps running on consumer smart devices (i.e., smartphones and tablets) for this purpose has received considerable attention. However, variation in the mode of delivering a survey questionnaire could affect the quality of the responses collected. OBJECTIVES To assess the impact that smartphone and tablet apps as a delivery mode have on the quality of survey questionnaire responses compared to any other alternative delivery mode: paper, laptop computer, tablet computer (manufactured before 2007), short message service (SMS) and plastic objects. SEARCH METHODS We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, IEEEXplore, Web of Science, CABI: CAB Abstracts, Current Contents Connect, ACM Digital, ERIC, Sociological Abstracts, Health Management Information Consortium, the Campbell Library and CENTRAL. We also searched registers of current and ongoing clinical trials such as ClinicalTrials.gov and the World Health Organization (WHO) International Clinical Trials Registry Platform. We also searched the grey literature in OpenGrey, Mobile Active and ProQuest Dissertation & Theses. Lastly, we searched Google Scholar and the reference lists of included studies and relevant systematic reviews. We performed all searches up to 12 and 13 April 2015. SELECTION CRITERIA We included parallel randomised controlled trials (RCTs), crossover trials and paired repeated measures studies that compared the electronic delivery of self-administered survey questionnaires via a smartphone or tablet app with any other delivery mode. We included data obtained from participants completing health-related self-administered survey questionnaire, both validated and non-validated. We also included data offered by both healthy volunteers and by those with any clinical diagnosis. We included studies that reported any of the following outcomes: data equivalence; data accuracy; data completeness; response rates; differences in the time taken to complete a survey questionnaire; differences in respondent's adherence to the original sampling protocol; and acceptability to respondents of the delivery mode. We included studies that were published in 2007 or after, as devices that became available during this time are compatible with the mobile operating system (OS) framework that focuses on apps. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two review authors independently extracted data from the included studies using a standardised form created for this systematic review in REDCap. They then compared their forms to reach consensus. Through an initial systematic mapping on the included studies, we identified two settings in which survey completion took place: controlled and uncontrolled. These settings differed in terms of (i) the location where surveys were completed, (ii) the frequency and intensity of sampling protocols, and (iii) the level of control over potential confounders (e.g., type of technology, level of help offered to respondents). We conducted a narrative synthesis of the evidence because a meta-analysis was not appropriate due to high levels of clinical and methodological diversity. We reported our findings for each outcome according to the setting in which the studies were conducted. MAIN RESULTS We included 14 studies (15 records) with a total of 2275 participants; although we included only 2272 participants in the final analyses as there were missing data for three participants from one included study.Regarding data equivalence, in both controlled and uncontrolled settings, the included studies found no significant differences in the mean overall scores between apps and other delivery modes, and that all correlation coefficients exceeded the recommended thresholds for data equivalence. Concerning the time taken to complete a survey questionnaire in a controlled setting, one study found that an app was faster than paper, whereas the other study did not find a significant difference between the two delivery modes. In an uncontrolled setting, one study found that an app was faster than SMS. Data completeness and adherence to sampling protocols were only reported in uncontrolled settings. Regarding the former, an app was found to result in more complete records than paper, and in significantly more data entries than an SMS-based survey questionnaire. Regarding adherence to the sampling protocol, apps may be better than paper but no different from SMS. We identified multiple definitions of acceptability to respondents, with inconclusive results: preference; ease of use; willingness to use a delivery mode; satisfaction; effectiveness of the system informativeness; perceived time taken to complete the survey questionnaire; perceived benefit of a delivery mode; perceived usefulness of a delivery mode; perceived ability to complete a survey questionnaire; maximum length of time that participants would be willing to use a delivery mode; and reactivity to the delivery mode and its successful integration into respondents' daily routine. Finally, regardless of the study setting, none of the included studies reported data accuracy or response rates. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS Our results, based on a narrative synthesis of the evidence, suggest that apps might not affect data equivalence as long as the intended clinical application of the survey questionnaire, its intended frequency of administration and the setting in which it was validated remain unchanged. There were no data on data accuracy or response rates, and findings on the time taken to complete a self-administered survey questionnaire were contradictory. Furthermore, although apps might improve data completeness, there is not enough evidence to assess their impact on adherence to sampling protocols. None of the included studies assessed how elements of user interaction design, survey questionnaire design and intervention design might influence mode effects. Those conducting research in public health and epidemiology should not assume that mode effects relevant to other delivery modes apply to apps running on consumer smart devices. Those conducting methodological research might wish to explore the issues highlighted by this systematic review.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The goal of this study was to compare a novel wireless phone and web based technology to record and store overactive bladder symptoms (OAB-S) to a traditional pen and paper micturition chart. METHODS Overactive bladder symptoms were recorded over a period of 3 days using both an electronic micturition chart (EMC) and the standard pen and paper micturition chart (MC). Twenty-nine men, with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), were included in the study. Dropout rate, patient's preference, and correlation between the quality of life measures (QoL) and symptoms recorded with EMC versus MC, were assessed and compared. RESULTS Of the total number of 29 patients enrolled into the study, 24 completed the full 3-day trial using MC and 27 using EMC. MC was preferred by 50%, while EMC was preferred by 50% of participants. Using MC, 21% of patients forgot to record at least one episode of urgency, versus 17% using EMC, 17% forgot to record at least one micturition using MC versus 8% using EMC. A statistically significant correlation was found between lower severity of OAB-S and higher QoL, using both recording methods. CONCLUSIONS In this study population, recording symptoms with EMC did not prove to be preferable compared to MC; however, EMC provided the same level of accuracy with the same or better adherence to the study protocol.
