Abstract
OBJECTIVE To systematically review studies that investigated different biomarkers of nocturia, including omics-driven biomarkers or 'Nocturomics'. MATERIALS AND METHODS PubMed® , Scopus® , and Embase® were searched systematically in May 2022 for research papers on biomarkers in physiological fluids and tissues from patients with nocturia. A distinction was made between biomarkers or candidates discovered by omics techniques, referred to as omics-driven biomarkers, and classical biomarkers, measured by standard laboratory techniques and mostly thought from pathophysiological hypothesis. RESULTS A total of 13 studies with 18 881 patients in total were included, eight of which focused on classical biomarkers including: atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), C-reactive protein (CRP), aldosterone, and melatonin. Five were 'Nocturomics', including one that assessed the microbiome and identified 27 faecal and eight urinary bacteria correlated with nocturia; and four studies that identified candidate metabolomic biomarkers, including fatty acid metabolites, serotonin, glycerol, lauric acid, thiaproline, and imidazolelactic acid among others. To date, no biomarker is recommended in clinical practice. Nocturomics are in an embryonic phase of conception but are developing quickly. Although candidate biomarkers are being identified, none of them are yet validated on a large sample, although some preclinical studies have shown a probable role of fatty acid metabolites as a possible biomarker of circadian rhythm and chronotherapy. CONCLUSION Further research is needed to validate biomarkers for nocturia within the framework of a diagnostic and therapeutic precision medicine perspective. We hope this study provides a summary of the current biomarker discoveries associated with nocturia and details future prospects for omics-driven biomarkers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the association between self-reported sleep quality and nocturia in nursing home residents. METHODS The association between self-reported poor sleep quality and nocturia was examined in eighty nursing home residents from two nursing facilities using logistic regression analysis. RESULTS Poor sleep quality was reported by 29% of the eighty participants (median age 89±7 years, 77% of women). Nocturia was more frequent in patients with versus without self-reported poor sleep quality (78% vs 47%, p=0.01). Nocturia was independently associated with self-reported poor sleep quality after controlling for age, gender, self-rated health status, cognitive frailty score, antidepressant and hypnosedative use (OR[95%CI] of 6.1[1.8-25.4]). CONCLUSION Nocturia severely impaired sleep quality in nursing home residents. Nocturia should be investigated in nursing home residents to optimize sleep quality.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the relationship between nocturia and medical history of nocturnal enuresis: two conditions where diurnal urination rhythm is disturbed. METHODS The Nagahama study is a longitudinal population-based health survey involving people aged 30-75 years in Nagahama city, Japan. Our analysis included 5,402 participants who completed enuresis and International Prostate Symptom Score questionnaires. Associations between nocturnal enuresis and nocturia were evaluated cross-sectionally and longitudinally with three models: (1) univariate analysis; (2) adjusted for basic characteristics (e.g., age, sex, body mass index, activity, alcohol, and smoking); and (3) adjusted for basic and clinical variables (e.g., hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, renal insufficiency, insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, and mental health). RESULTS In total, 1,613 participants (29.9%) had a medical history of enuresis. The mean night-time frequency was 0.73 at baseline and 0.85 at the 5-year follow-up. The cross-sectional analysis showed participants with a medical history of enuresis had night-time frequency more often than those without this history (0.84 vs. 0.68, p < .0001). Significant differences were observed in Models 2 (p < .0001) and 3 (p < .0001). The longitudinal analysis showed nocturia progression was significantly related to a history of enuresis, with odds ratios of 1.32 (p < .0001) in Model 1, 1.21 (p < .01) in Model 2, and 1.22 (p < .01) in Model 3. CONCLUSIONS Medical history of enuresis during school age was significantly related to nocturia in adulthood in the cross-sectional analysis, and to progression to nocturia in the longitudinal analysis. These two conditions may possess a common causative association.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate the association between B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and nocturia among community-dwelling males and females. METHODS A total of 1096 participants (mean age 71.9 ± 7.1 years, 518 [47.2%] males) were included in the study. The number of nocturnal voids was recorded in a self-reported urination diary, and nocturia was defined as two or more voids per night. Daytime serum concentration of the N-terminal fragment of BNP precursor (NT-proBNP) was measured. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the association between NT-proBNP and nocturia. RESULTS Nocturia was observed in 23.5% of females and 37.1% of males. Higher NT-proBNP (log pg/ml) was associated with nocturia in both gender groups (females: odds ratio [OR]: 1.67, 95% confidence interval [95% CI], 1.21-2.34, p = .002; males: OR: 1.26, 95% CI, 1.01-1.59, p = .046), independent of confounding variables including night-time blood pressure, mean voided volume, and chronic kidney disease. Although the increase in prevalence of nocturia with higher NT-proBNP was equivalent in both genders, some effect of gender on the relationship between NT-proBNP and nocturia was observed (p = .037). Nocturnal urine volume was also significantly and independently associated with NT-proBNP level (females: β = 32.9 ml, 95% CI, 5.63-60.2, p = .018; males: β = 34.6 ml, 95% CI, 9.40-59.9, p = .007). CONCLUSIONS This study revealed higher serum NT-proBNP is significantly and independently associated with the prevalence of nocturia in both males and females. This is an exploratory cross-sectional study and the analyses are post hoc, so further research works are needed to clarify the causality and clinical value.

Night-time frequency of urination as a manifestation of sleep-disordered breathing: the Nagahama study. Sleep Med 2020; 77:288-294. Abstract
AIMS Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is a well-known risk factor for cardiovascular outcomes. Studies of patients with SDB have identified frequent night-time urination as a manifestation related to SDB. We aimed to clarify whether night-time frequency of urination is independently associated with SDB in a general population. We also investigated whether night-time frequency of urination can help presumptive diagnose SDB. METHODS Study participants consisted of 7151 community residents. Oxygen saturation during sleep was measured for four nights using a pulse oximeter. SDB was defined as ≥15 events per hour in which oxygen desaturation exceeded or equal to 3% during an actigraphy-determined sleep period. Night-time frequency of urination was recorded for one week using a sleep diary. RESULTS Significant positive correlations were evident between night-time frequency of urination and SDB (none, 5.8%; once/night, 14.1%; twice/night, 20.1%; thrice/night, 28.7%; >thrice/night, 44.1%, P < 0.001). This association was independent of possible covariates, including sleep duration (adjusted odds ratio: once/night = 1.50, twice/night = 2.15, thrice/night = 3.07, >thrice/night = 3.73, P < 0.001). Other factors significantly associated with SDB were age, sex, obesity, observation of sleep apnea, and short sleep duration. The area under the curve of the risk score for SDB consisting of these conventional six items (0.834) significantly improved (0.842, P = 0.001) when night-time frequency of urination was considered as a risk score item. CONCLUSION Night-time frequency of urination was associated with SDB. Our findings suggest that the urination frequency should be considered a manifestation of SDB even in a general population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We investigated the association between sleep symptoms, which cause sleep disorder, and quality of life (QoL) among people with type 2 diabetes (T2D). METHODS In this cross-sectional study of 342 people with T2D, the Japan National Health and Wellness Survey (NHWS) database 2016 were used. We treated the respondents who reported experiencing any of the sleep symptoms as having sleep disorders. To examine health-related QoL (HRQoL), we used the physical component summary (PCS) and the mental component summary (MCS) from the 36-Item short-form and the EuroQol 5 Dimension (EQ-5D) survey instruments. Overall activity impairment was used for assessment of the effect on the individual's ability to perform regular daily activities. We used t-test and one-way ANOVA test for comparison QoL scores between the participants with and without sleep disorders. RESULTS 66.4% of the participants with T2D reported having a sleep disorder. The PCS, MCS, EQ-5D, and overall activity impairment of people with sleep disorder was significantly poorer than those of the people without. Specific sleep symptoms, such as waking up to go to the bathroom, daytime sleepiness, and waking up too early (before the alarm clock), had high prevalence (35.4, 27.8 and 20.2%). The participants who experienced waking up to go to the bathroom or daytime sleepiness demonstrated significantly poorer QoL on all scores related to QoL, but those who experienced waking up too early only demonstrated significantly poorer QoL on the EQ-5D. CONCLUSIONS Two-thirds of people with T2D in this study suffer from sleep disorders. The people who experience waking up to go to the bathroom or daytime sleepiness had significantly poorer QoL than those without these symptoms. Thus, sleep disorders, especially the symptoms of waking up to go to the bathroom or daytime sleepiness, might be the treatment targets for QOL of people with T2DM.
