Abstract
Over 85% of childhood cancer patients become long-term survivors. Still, cancer and its therapies are associated with a myriad of long-term complications such that childhood cancer survivors (CCS) endure excess disease burden, morbidity, and mortality throughout their lifetimes. Existing literature suggests that CCS maintain poor dietary intake and nutritional status. Thus, as childhood cancer cure rates continue to improve, the role of diet and nutrition in mitigating many of the most common adverse long-term health outcomes among CCS has gained significant interest. Herein we present an in-depth review of existing scientific literature evaluating dietary intake and nutrition status among CCS and its impact on treatment-related health complications; as well as contemporary intervention strategies aimed at overcoming distinctive barriers and improving deleterious lifestyle behaviors in this heterogeneous, at-risk population. Patient-specific, clinical, and systemic factors act as barriers to the timely conduct of comprehensive dietary/nutritional assessments and provision of tailored, risk-based recommendations. This Mini Review discusses the current state of the science, persisting research gaps, and opportunities for advancement of assessment and intervention strategies to address the unique needs of CCS. Search Strategy: We searched PubMed for peer-reviewed articles with the search terms "pediatric cancer," "pediatric malignancy," "pediatric oncology," "childhood cancer," "survivorship," "cancer late effects," "long-term follow-up," "body mass index," "nutritional status," "malnutrition," "body weight," "body weight changes," "body composition," "obesity," "overweight ", "Mediterranean diet," "DASH diet," "processed foods," "micronutrients," "antioxidants," "vitamin D," "calcium," "selenium," "zinc," "metabolic syndrome," "heart disease," "cardiovascular disease," "cardiometabolic disease," "hypertension," "hyperlipidemia," "HDL," "LDL," and "small dense LDL" from January 1, 1995, to July 21, 2023. We also selected relevant articles from our personal files and from reference lists of identified papers. We prioritized publications after 2013; however, commonly cited and highly regarded (defined by high citation count and journal impact factor) older publications were also included. Randomized controlled trials, observational studies, retrospective studies, meta-analysis, editorials, and review articles were included, whereas conference abstracts and case reports were excluded. We only searched for articles published in English, or those translated into English.

Abstract
PURPOSE Regular physical activity (PA) is essential for childhood cancer survivors (CCS), yet most CCS have difficulty participating in it. The level of PA participation among CCS in China is lower than those of western countries, leading to a worse long-term survival of CCS in China. Here, the study aims to explore the associated factors on the PA performance among CCS. METHODS From September to December 2020, the study used purposive sampling to recruit 35 families (88.9%) as sampling units among two hospitals in Hangzhou City, China. The data collection conducted two designs on semi-structured interviews with different roles under family structure - children (n = 35) and parents (n = 35) - respectively. The design of predetermined questions relied on the health belief model (HBM) as a thematic framework. The qualitative analysis applied codebook thematic analysis and used the deductive approach to finalize the main findings. RESULTS The study only presented preliminary conclusions from interviews with CCS, which resulted in four themes (changes in PA performance; perceptions on participating PA; cognitions of PA; impacts from others) with eight sub-themes. In particular, CCS replied diversity changes in PA, but most of them mentioned the inactive PA after diagnosis, especially the decline of moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA). As for the "perceptions of PA," almost all CCS had substantial perceived benefits about PA, specifically on their physical well-being. All children also expressed perceived barriers to PA, including the side effects of disease and treatment, fatigue, academic burden, changes in psychological status, and lack of companions. On the cognitions of PA, the CCS had limited realizations of regular PA and low self-efficacy on MVPA. Furthermore, CCS expressed their need for support from their parents, school teachers, and healthcare providers. But in reality, they recieved less support on PA from these important people. CONCLUSION The changes in PA after illness among CCS are apparent and unavoidable because of the interaction impacts from internal factors (e.g., personal characters, cognization, perceptions of PA) and external factors (e.g., disease effects, interpersonal supports). The findings explained the main elements under HBM but also provided explored views as the evidence on developing theories and guiding motivations and practices on PA among CCS. IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS In this exploratory study of 35 CCS, we identified the current situation of PA among CCS in China and explored the associated factors. As the first qualitative study on the CCS in mainland China, the study considered particular effects on social culture and living environment.

Abstract
Purpose: Adolescent and young adult survivors of childhood cancer (AYA) are at risk for long-term health problems that are exacerbated by not meeting health behavior recommendations (e.g., exercise). To identify AYA at risk for not meeting health behavior recommendations, we explored demographic (e.g., age) and cancer-specific (e.g., intensity of treatment) factors associated with not meeting specific health behavior recommendations that have implications for cancer prevention and control. Methods: Regression (linear/binary) was used to examine demographic and cancer-specific associates regarding fruit/vegetable intake, binge drinking, sleep duration, sunscreen use, tobacco use, and physical activity among 307 AYA (Mage = 20.33, range = 15-34) across three combined studies, treated at a pediatric cancer center. Health behavior measures were adapted from The Health Behaviors Survey and the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System questionnaire. Results: AYA in general did not meet health behavior recommendations. Compared with AYA with public insurance, AYA with private insurance (β = -0.19, p < 0.01) were more likely to meet multiple health behavior recommendations. AYA at greatest risk for not meeting specific health behaviors were more likely to be diagnosed in middle childhood (11.35years) compared with early childhood (8.38years), be closer to diagnosis (8.77years vs. 11.76years) and closer to treatment completion (6.97years vs. 9.91years), and have a solid tumor (32.7%) compared with a brain tumor (10.6%). Conclusion: Not meeting health behavior recommendations is common among AYA survivors of childhood cancer. Early education in the context of survivorship care is critical to provide teachable moments to AYA; such interventions might impact future long-term health and reduce risk for secondary cancers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The links between nutrition and chronic disease are well established, but consumption of fruits and vegetables is low among young adult childhood cancer survivors (YACS) worldwide. Ensuring equitable access to fresh produce is a significant, persistent public health challenge. OBJECTIVE The purposes of this report are to describe patterns of access to fresh produce, daily intake of fruits/vegetables, and nutrition education preferences among a sample of YACS and to highlight early development of a mentored gardening intervention. METHODS A cross-sectional descriptive study design was used to assess dietary intake, access to fruits/vegetables, and preferences for nutrition education among 124 YACS through a comprehensive cancer survivorship program in a large pediatric cancer center. RESULTS Most participants (71.8%) live more than 10 minutes' walking distance from a supermarket, and 88.7% do not meet the recommended daily intake of 5 or more servings of fruit and vegetables. A total of 91% of participants express that nutrition is important, and 81.5% desire dietary improvement. Most (78.2%) are likely to use either their computer or cell phone for nutrition content. To establish healthy nutrition habits, many seek the support of a nutritionist (63.7%) or another survivor (41.9%). CONCLUSIONS Study findings underscore the need for advocacy to support equitable access to fresh produce and technology-enhanced nutrition education among YACS. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE To improve access to fresh produce and food literacy among YACS, providers can collaborate with community stakeholders to build capacity for sustainable, technology-enhanced, and mentored gardening interventions at the individual, family, and community level.

Abstract
Background: Cancer survivors are at increased risk of long-term adverse effects related to the disease or treatment. Thus, it is important for cancer survivors to adopt a health-promoting lifestyle (HPL). This study aims to: (1) describe health behavior self-efficacy (HBSE) and HPL of adolescent survivors of childhood cancer, (2) examine the relationships between HBSE, HPL, and various demographic factors, and (3) identify determinants of HPL among adolescent survivors of childhood cancer. Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with adolescent survivors of childhood cancer, ranged in age from 11 to 19 years (n = 82). Participants were recruited from pediatric oncology follow-up clinics at two medical centers in southern Taiwan. Data for each participant were collected from questionnaires assessing HBSE and HPL. Results: Only 61% of the adolescent survivors were considered as normal weight. The exercise was the lowest scoring HBSE subscale. Factors associated with better HPL included: education level, HBSE, well-being, and a healthy diet. Specifically, survivors diagnosed with cancer during adolescence exhibited significantly greater self-efficacy with stress management (F = 3.20, p = .04) compared with those diagnosed at pre-school ages. HBSE scores for well-being and a healthy diet were significant predictors of HPL, accounting for 43.8% of the total variance observed. Discussion: Our findings suggest that the age of diagnosis of childhood cancer significantly modulates the frequency of health-promoting behaviors of adolescent survivors. Thus, interventions designed to enhance adolescents' well-being and the management of a healthy diet may enhance HPL in survivors of childhood cancer.

Self-efficacy in symptom management for adolescents and young adults with cancer: a systematic review. Support Care Cancer 2021; 29:2851-2862. Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) have more frequent and intense adverse effects from cancer therapy than other age groups. Self-efficacy, the ability for persons to maintain health-related behavior change, may assist with symptom management but the role it plays in AYAs with cancer has not been thoroughly investigated. This review explores the role that self-efficacy has in symptom management for AYAs with cancer and provides guidance for clinicians to utilize self-efficacy as a means to reduce side effects of therapy. METHODS A systematic review of peer-reviewed literature was conducted to identify works discussing self-efficacy and symptom management for AYAs with cancer. Five databases were searched with key terms and articles that discussed relationships between self-efficacy and cancer therapy symptoms were retained for analysis. FINDINGS Twelve manuscripts representing 1180 individuals age 12 to 43 years were identified. Self-efficacy was found to be related to (1) health management behaviors, (2) psychosocial health, (3) sexual and reproductive health, and (4) physical symptoms. Self-efficacy had direct correlations with physical activity, nutritional intake, symptom regulation, mental health, sexual health, and fertility preservation. The included studies did not find significant relationships with medication adherence or pain management. DISCUSSION Self-efficacy is an attribute that impacts behavior change, health maintenance, and overall wellness and can be changed over time and through interventions to improve symptoms of cancer therapy. Self-efficacy should be evaluated as a construct in relevant studies aimed at improving side effects of cancer therapy to better understand outcomes from interventions. Symptoms, toxicities, and adverse effects of cancer therapy may be improved by increasing self-efficacy of patients.

Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the impact of a series of one-day events delivered by Trekstock, a charity supporting young adults with cancer in the United Kingdom. Methods: Data on physical activity, mood, perceived support, self-efficacy, and confidence to be active were collected at three time points: before, after, and 2 weeks following the Meet & Move events. Results: Ninety-seven young adults with cancer (mean age: 29 years, 35% still receiving active treatment) attended a Trekstock Meet & Move event and participated within the evaluation. Baseline data demonstrated that before attending a Meet & Move event, 27% (n = 23) of young adults reported feeling their cancer excluded them from engaging in exercise, 44% (n = 37) reported concern that exercise will cause pain or injury, and only 38% (n = 32) knew what exercise they could do. Data collected post-event and at follow-up indicated that Meet & Move had a positive impact upon attendees' self-efficacy and confidence to be active with more than half reporting they felt inspired after attending. There was also a significant reduction in reported worry that exercise may cause pain or injury and reported perception of feeling left out of exercise because of cancer (p < 0.05). Following engagement in the Meet & Move events, 45% of attendees had either signed up for an additional Trekstock physical activity program or initiated engagement in a new type of physical activity on their own. Conclusion: Trekstock Meet & Move events inspire and motivate young adults with cancer in their 20s and 30s to be active.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can protect adolescent survivors of pediatric cancer against chronic diseases such as obesity and cardiovascular disease. In this study, we examined the attitudes of adolescent survivors of pediatric cancer and their parents toward improving lifestyle behaviors after cancer treatment, including their preferences for intervention delivery and perceived barriers and benefits to healthy eating and exercise. METHODS We recruited adolescent survivors of childhood cancer aged 11-19 years and their parents, from two hospitals. Participants completed a questionnaire via mail or at routine oncology clinic visits. RESULTS Thirty-three adolescents (response rate 39%, mean age 15, 61% male) and 32 parents (representing 30 parent-child dyads) participated. Parents were significantly more interested in having their child participate in a lifestyle intervention than adolescents (41% of adolescents and 72% of parents, P = .012). Both groups preferred that the survivor receive lifestyle support face to face rather than online. Adolescents preferred to involve their friends (39% of adolescents and 19% of parents) whereas parents preferred to involve the family in a lifestyle intervention (15% of adolescents and 47% of parents, P = .006). Adolescents and their parents perceived a dislike of the taste of fruits and vegetables, fatigue, lack of motivation, and fear of injury as barriers to change. They perceived that keeping healthy and having more energy were benefits to participation. Participants indicated that interventions that provide face-to-face personal training and dietary education at a local gym would be well accepted. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents who have had cancer in childhood have a preference for face-to-face contact with health professionals to overcome the barriers to participation in a lifestyle intervention.
