Abstract
BACKGROUND The burden of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) equates to 3.5 million cases, resulting in more than 90 000 deaths and 2.5 million disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) across Europe. Biological spills pose infection and safety risks for both patients and staff, so spill management is of strategic importance for containment. There is limited evidence as to the efficacy of spill kits currently in use with regard to infection control management. AIM To understand the perceptions of health professionals when using different spill kit systems. Data collection involved videos and interviews with simulated patients and health professionals (n=24). Simulated spills/scenarios were used to compare the use of both two standard (incumbent) and BIOPERL+ spill kit interventions. Data analysis was iterative and informed by the Framework Method of Analysis. FINDINGS The BIOPERL+ kit facilitates rapid identification of the appropriate spill kit to use; locating and understanding instructions in both kit types highlight how individuals learn and absorb information; there were positive views on the efficacy of the granules to absorb blood, urine, faeces and vomit of both kit types; the larger scoop of the BIOPERL+ kit was seen as a benefit, facilitating ease of use; concerns were raised over potential cross-contamination and the environmental impact of plastic components used in the kits. CONCLUSION The 'one size fits all' of the BIOPERL+ kit identified it as the spill kit to use for all biological spills, whereas choice of the two incumbent kits depended on spill type. Locating and understanding instructions in both kit types highlighted how individuals learn and absorb information differently, which may have implications for clinical practice. Participants perceived that all kits had minimal to strong odour, yet the incumbent kits emitted a chlorine-type odour, potentially posing a health risk. The BIOPERL+ large scoop size was seen as more efficacious for spillage containment compared with the smaller plastic scoop of the incumbent kits. Participants also perceived that the incumbent kits could be a source of potential cross-contamination when reusing component parts. The cardboard materials used in the BIOPERL+ kit were perceived as a benefit, potentially having less of an impact on the environment. The study identified that the BIOPERL+ kit is an effective, safe novel intervention that is both appropriate for managing human spills and environmentally friendly.

Abstract
Objective This review aims to identify the exercise rehabilitation approaches used for patients with POTS (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome). Methods An electronic literature search was conducted using the PubMed database, covering January 2005 to October 2023. Studies were included if they reported an exercise rehabilitation intervention for POTS patients and resulting clinical outcomes. Eligible study designs included randomized and non-randomized clinical trials and case reports. Results Initially, 34 publications were identified, but only 14 met the criteria for inclusion. After a thorough analysis, 7 studies were included in this scoping review. The majority of the studies stated aerobic exercise training significantly improves symptoms in most of the patients with orthostatic intolerance, reduces the frequency of syncope, enhances patient quality of life, and improves autonomic balance as assessed by heart rate variability analysis and cardiorespiratory endurance. Short-term exercise training was found to boost physical fitness and cardiorespiratory responses in patients with POTS. Therefore, exercise training can serve as an effective non-pharmacological therapy for managing POTS. Conclusion This scoping review identified different approaches used for exercise rehabilitation in POTS patients. However, more research is needed to identify the optimal exercise rehabilitation program for this patient population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To explore experiences of physiotherapists working with adults living with Long COVID in Canada. DESIGN Cross-sectional descriptive qualitative study involving online semi-structured interviews. PARTICIPANTS We recruited physiotherapists in Canada who self-identified as having clinically treated one or more adults living with Long COVID in the past year. DATA COLLECTION Using an interview guide, we inquired about physiotherapists' knowledge of Long COVID, assessment and treatment experiences, perspectives on physiotherapists' roles, contextual and implementation factors influencing rehabilitative outcomes, and their recommendations for Long COVID rehabilitation. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using a group-based thematic analytical approach. We administered a demographic questionnaire to describe sample characteristics. RESULTS 13 physiotherapists from five provinces participated; most were women (n=8; 62%) and practised in urban settings (n=11; 85%). Participants reported variable amounts of knowledge of existing guidelines and experiences working with adults living with Long COVID in the past year. Physiotherapists characterised their experiences working with adults living with Long COVID as a dynamic process involving: (1) a disruption to the profession (encountering a new patient population and pivoting to new models of care delivery), followed by (2) a cyclical process of learning curves and evolving roles of physiotherapists working with persons living with Long COVID (navigating uncertainty, keeping up with rapidly emerging evidence, trial and error, adapting mindset and rehabilitative approaches and growing prominence of roles as advocate and collaborator). Participants recommended the need for education and training, active and open-minded listening with patients, interdisciplinary models of care, and organisational- and system-level improvements to foster access to care. CONCLUSIONS Physiotherapists' experiences involved a disruption to the profession followed by a dynamic process of learning curves and evolving roles in Long COVID rehabilitation. Not all participants demonstrated an in-depth understanding of existing Long COVID rehabilitation guidelines. Results may help inform physiotherapy education in Long COVID rehabilitation.

Abstract
The presence of prolonged symptoms after COVID infection worsens the workability and quality of life. 200 adults with long COVID syndrome were enrolled after medical, physical, and mental screening, and were divided into two groups based on their performance. The intervention group (n = 100) received supervised rehabilitation at Department of Pulmonology, Semmelweis University with the registration number 160/2021 between 01/APR/2021-31/DEC/2022, while an age-matched control group (n = 100) received a single check-up. To evaluate the long-term effects of the rehabilitation, the intervention group was involved in a 2- and 3-month follow-up, carrying out cardiopulmonary exercise test. Our study contributes understanding long COVID rehabilitation, emphasizing the potential benefits of structured cardiopulmonary rehabilitation in enhancing patient outcomes and well-being. Significant difference was found between intervention group and control group at baseline visit in pulmonary parameters, as forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume, forced expiratory volume, transfer factor for carbon monoxide, transfer coefficient for carbon monoxide, and oxygen saturation (all p < 0.05). Our follow-up study proved that a 2-week long, patient-centered pulmonary rehabilitation program has a positive long-term effect on people with symptomatic long COVID syndrome. Our data showed significant improvement between two and three months in maximal oxygen consumption (p < 0.05). Multidisciplinary, individualized approach may be a key element of a successful cardiopulmonary rehabilitation in long COVID conditions, which improves workload, quality of life, respiratory function, and status of patients with long COVID syndrome.

Abstract
Background Patients recovering from severe COVID-19 infections have experienced prolonged cognitive, physical, and psychological sequelae, including cardiorespiratory and motor deconditioning, neurological deterioration, anxiety, and depression. The impact of rehabilitation post-acute COVID-19 infection was recognized in the literature, but studies assessing and quantifying specific functional outcomes were lacking. This study aims to describe the characteristics and quantify the changes in functional outcomes of patients admitted to Qatar Rehabilitation Institute (QRI) for inpatient rehabilitation (IPR) post-COVID-19 infection during a 10-month period in 2021. Methods This is a retrospective observational cohort study, which included individuals over 18 years of age with a documented COVID-19-positive diagnosis who were admitted to QRI for IPR due to COVID-19 complications. Data was collected by the investigators from January 1, 2021, until October 30, 2021. A total of 243 patients were included in this study. The changes in functional rehabilitation outcomes were assessed and quantified at both the patient's baseline (on admission to QRI) and after completion of IPR (on discharge). The duration of the IPR program varied based on each patient's baseline assessment. Patients were given a total of 8-12 weeks to achieve their rehabilitation goals and were discharged once those goals were met. Several validated tools were utilized in this study including Functional Independence Measure (FIM), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Dynamic Gait Index (DGI), Modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) Dyspnea Scale, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and Right- and left-Hand Grip Strength. In addition, patients' diet, the need for respiratory support, and the presence of a tracheostomy tube before and after IPR were also recorded. Results In total, 84.4% of the included patients were males (n = 205); with a mean age of 52.44 ± 12.99 years. The most commonly reported comorbidities were type 2 diabetes (62.1%) and hypertension (49.8%) with 83.5% of patients experiencing critical illness neuromyopathy. The average patients' length of stay in QRI was 33.92 ± 27.72 days. A statistically significant improvement in all functional outcome scales was noted following the completion of the IPR program (p = 0.001). The number of patients requiring modification to their diet or feeding via nasogastric tube (NGT) significantly decreased by 35% and 93%, respectively (p = 0.001). Patients requiring respiratory support decreased by 98% (p = 0.001) and the need for a tracheostomy tube among patients was reduced by 95% (p = 0.001). Conclusion IPR following COVID-19 infection was associated with significant functional, motor, and cardiorespiratory improvement. Dedicating clinics for post-COVID-19 rehabilitation would ensure improved patient outcomes and enhanced recovery.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify research priorities related to COVID rehabilitation from the perspectives of persons with lived experiences, clinicians, researchers, community organization and policy representatives. MATERIALS & METHODS We conducted five international consultations to identify key issues and research priorities in COVID rehabilitation using (i) web-based questionnaires, (ii) synchronous discussions, and (iii) content analysis of COVID rehabilitation research conference presentations. We collated responses and notes and then analyzed data using content analytical techniques. RESULTS The Framework of Research Priorities in COVID Rehabilitation includes five priorities that span health and disability across COVID-19 and Long COVID illness trajectories: (1) understanding experiences of episodic disability; (2) assessing episodic disability; (3) identifying and examining safe approaches to rehabilitation; (4) examining the role, implementation, and impact of models of rehabilitation care; and (5) examining access to safe, timely and appropriate rehabilitation and other health care provider services. The Framework identifies target populations, methodological considerations, and highlights the importance of integrated knowledge translation and exchange in advancing scientific evidence, clinical education, practice, and COVID rehabilitation policy. CONCLUSIONS This Framework provides a foundation to advance COVID, disability and rehabilitation research to advance the health and well-being of persons with COVID-19, Long COVID, and their caregivers.Implications for rehabilitationPersons with COVID-19 or Long COVID and their caregivers may experience multi-dimensional forms of disability spanning physical, cognitive, emotional health challenges, difficulties with daily function, and social inclusion, which individually and/or collectively may be unpredictable, episodic and/or chronic in nature.Rehabilitation has a role in preventing or mitigating disability and enhancing health outcomes for persons with COVID-19, Long COVID and their caregivers.The Framework of Research Priorities COVID Rehabilitation includes five overlapping research priorities spanning health and disability across COVID trajectories: (1) understanding experiences of episodic disability; (2) assessing episodic disability; (3) identifying and examining safe approaches to rehabilitation; (4) examining the role, implementation, and impact of models of rehabilitation care; and (5) examining access to safe, timely and appropriate rehabilitation and other health care provider services.The research priorities in the Framework represent a comprehensive approach to examine disability and rehabilitation across COVID illness trajectories and the broad continuums of rehabilitation care to provide a coordinated and collaborative approach to advancing evidence in COVID disability and rehabilitation.This Framework provides a foundation for international and interdisciplinary collaborations, to advance COVID disability and rehabilitation research to enhance health outcomes of persons with COVID-19, Long COVID, and their caregivers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of individuals with post-coronavirus 19 (COVID-19) condition symptoms who underwent a supervised telerehabilitation and home-based respiratory muscle training (TSHB-RMT) program. METHODS A qualitative descriptive study was conducted. Participants were recruited using purposeful sampling. The inclusion criteria consisted of: patients aged over 18 years who presented persistent COVID-19 symptoms of fatigue and dyspnea for at least 3 months after the COVID-19 diagnosis. In total, 28 patients were included. In-depth interviews and researcher field notes were used to collect the data. A thematic analysis was performed. RESULTS Three themes reflect the patients' perspective on the TSHB-RMT before the program (reasons for participating), during the treatment program, and upon completion of the study. Among the reasons for participation, participants highlighted the absence of improvement and treatment, and feeling abandoned and forgotten by the health system. The treatment required discipline on behalf of the patients. Mondays and Tuesdays were the most difficult days for performing the therapy, and the physical therapist was perceived as a tool for adherence, change, and a source of validated information. The patients perceived positive effects quite soon; however, it was necessary to extend the follow-up after completing the program because they abandoned the program due to the lack of guidance for exercise supervision. CONCLUSION This study described relevant aspects that physical therapist professionals should consider when providing TSHB-RMT treatment. IMPACT TSHB-RMT requires discipline, perseverance, effort, and a commitment to the group. The physical therapist is perceived as the tool that facilitates adherence and participation. The effects are rapidly perceived, leading to improved self-confidence and autonomy; however, it is necessary to increase the follow-up time.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES To explore emotional, mental health and physical symptoms up to 3 months after discharge for adults hospitalized with COVID-19. BACKGROUND 10%-30% of adults with COVID-19 experience physical and psychological symptoms 3 months or more following infection. Knowing symptoms can help direct early intervention. DESIGN A longitudinal descriptive design to study COVID-related symptoms 2 weeks, 6 weeks and 3 months after hospitalization. METHODS Sixty-six patients were recruited from a hospital system in Midwestern US (October 2020-May 2021). Participants self-reported demographics, hospital and post discharge symptoms, PROMIS measures (depression, anxiety, fatigue, cognitive function, satisfaction social roles, sleep disturbance) and Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R). Hospital length of stay, comorbidities, lowest oxygen saturation, respiratory support and resources used were collected. Descriptive and nonparametric statistics described the sample and identified correlations between variables. The STROBE checklist was used. RESULTS Data from 1 (T1) and 3 months (T2) post discharge were analysed (N = 52). A majority were female, white and married; 96% experienced ≥1 COVID-related symptoms at T1; 85% at T2. Fatigue was most prevalent, followed by shortness of breath, muscle weakness and foggy thinking. More physical symptoms during hospitalization correlated positively with number of symptoms at T1 and T2; a majority stated these impacted their normal routine 'somewhat' or 'a lot'. T1 depression highly correlated with all T2 PROMIS and IES-R scores and number of physical symptoms. More symptoms at T1 were associated with worse fatigue, lower cognitive function and lower satisfaction with social roles at T2. CONCLUSION This study adds to the growing knowledge of mental, physical and emotional symptoms and relationships between these early after hospitalization with COVID-19. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE Findings can help identify holistic nursing interventions to improve health and mitigate symptoms for people with long COVID. Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has introduced a new subset of patients with acute end-stage lung damage for which lung transplantation has been successfully performed. OBJECTIVE To describe the inpatient rehabilitation course of patients who underwent bilateral lung transplant due to severe COVID-19 pulmonary disease. DESIGN Retrospective chart review. SETTING Free-standing, academic, urban inpatient rehabilitation hospital. PARTICIPANTS Seventeen patients aged 28-67 years old (mean 53.9 ± 10.7) who developed COVID-19 respiratory failure and underwent bilateral lung transplant. INTERVENTIONS Patients participated in a comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation program including physical, occupational, and speech therapy tailored to the unique functional needs of each individual. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Primary outcome measures of functional improvements, include mobility and self-care scores on section GG of the Functional Abilities and Goals of the Improving Post-Acute Care Transformation Act, as defined as quality measures by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Other functional measures included 6 minute walk test, Berg balance scale, Mann Assessment of Swallowing Ability (MASA), and Cognition and Memory Functional Independence Measure (FIM) scores. Wilcoxon signed rank sum test was used to evaluate statistical significance of change between admission and discharge scores. RESULTS Fourteen patients completed inpatient rehabilitation. Self-care (GG0130) mean score improved from 20.9 to 36.1. Mobility (GG0170) mean score improved from 30.7 to 70.7. Mean 6-minute walk distance improved from 174.1 to 467.6 feet. Mean Berg balance scores improved from 18.6/56 to 36.3/56. MASA scores improved from 171.3 to 182.3. All functional measures demonstrated statistically significant improvements with p value ≤ .008, except for cognition and memory FIM scores, which did not show a statistically significant difference. A majority (76%) of patients discharged home. CONCLUSION This new and unique patient population can successfully participate in a comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation program and achieve functional improvements despite medical complications.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to describe the healthcare utilization, and clinical and sociodemographic features of a cohort of 74 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients admitted to a tertiary rehabilitation hospital in Toronto, Canada. A retrospective chart review was performed using 74 charts from patients admitted to a COVID-19 rehabilitation unit between 11 April 2020 and 30 April 2021. Measures of central tendency, SDs, interquartile ranges, frequencies, and proportions were calculated to analyze clinical and sociodemographic data. A total of 74 patients were included in this study, including 33 males and 41 females. The mean age was 72.8 years, with Wave 1 patients being younger than Wave 2 patients. Sixty-six percent of total patients experienced hypertension. Mean functional independence measure score across both waves was 78 at admission and 100 at discharge. Mean length of stay was 14.6 days in Wave 1 and 18.8 days in Wave 2. This study represents some of the first data on the characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 patients admitted to inpatient rehabilitation in Toronto, Canada across the initial waves of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Introduction During the COVID-19 pandemic, discharge timelines were accelerated and patients were moved across the continuum of care, from acute to post-acute care, to relieve the strain in health system capacity. This study aimed to investigate the COVID-19 care pathway from the perspective of patients, caregivers, and healthcare providers to understand their experiences with care and recovery within and across care settings. Methods A qualitative descriptive study. Patients and their families from an inpatient COVID-19 unit and healthcare providers from an acute or rehabilitation COVID-19 unit were interviewed. Results A total of 27 participants were interviewed. Three major themes were identified: 1) The perceived quality and pace of COVID-19 care improved from acute care to inpatient rehabilitation; 2) Care transitions were especially distressing; and 3) Recovery from COVID-19 stagnated in the community. Conclusion Inpatient rehabilitation was viewed as higher quality due to the slower paced care. Care transitions were distressing for stakeholders and enhanced integration between acute and rehabilitation care were suggested to improve patient handover. A lack of rehabilitation access led to recovery stagnating for patients discharged to the community. Telerehab may improve the transition to home and ensure access to adequate rehabilitation and support in the community.

Abstract
Objective To update the evidence map on the effects of interventions for post-acute COVID-19 rehabilitation. Method The search scope was defined according to the population (patients with symptomatic COVID-19 and post-acute COVID sequelae), the context (interventions for rehabilitation), and the type of study (systematic reviews, rapid reviews, scoping reviews or overviews of reviews). Following a search in PubMed and the Virtual Health Library, two independent authors selected the articles for review. The map was updated on July 27, 2022, using the same procedures employed in the initial review. Results The initial evidence map included 22 studies (four systematic reviews, four rapid reviews, four reviews of case reports, one scoping review, and nine systematic review protocols). In the present update, an additional 10 studies were included. The analysis revealed four groups of interventions (multimodal, therapeutic, complementary, and pharmacological) and seven groups of outcomes (pathological conditions, diseases/respiratory disorders, pain, physiological and metabolic markers, mental health/quality of life, sensory function, and mortality), totaling 166 associations between interventions and outcomes. The highest number of associations was observed for complementary therapies (n = 94). Among the outcomes, the highest number of associations was observed for physiological and metabolic markers, pathological conditions, and mental health/quality of life (44, 41, and 35 associations respectively). Conclusions The map update involved the analysis of 69 associations, most notably exercise (isolated, multicomponent, or multimodal intervention), with 23 positive and four potentially positive effects) and pharmacologic and complementary therapies for sensorial functions (15 associations). The high number of systematic review protocols indicates that the literature is still incipient.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Dyspnea, fatigue, and reduced exercise tolerance are common in post-COVID-19 patients. In these patients, rehabilitation can improve functional capacity, reduce deconditioning after a prolonged stay in the intensive care unit, and facilitate the return to work. Thus, the present study verified the effects of cardiopulmonary rehabilitation consisting of continuous aerobic and resistance training of moderate-intensity on pulmonary function, respiratory muscle strength, maximum and submaximal tolerance to exercise, fatigue, and quality of life in post-COVID-19 patients. METHODS Quasi-experimental study with a protocol of 12 sessions of an outpatient intervention. Adults over 18 years of age (N = 26) with a diagnosis of COVID-19 and hospital discharge at least 15 days before the first evaluation were included. Participants performed moderate-intensity continuous aerobic and resistance training twice a week. Maximal and submaximal exercise tolerance, lung function, respiratory muscle strength, fatigue and quality of life were evaluated before and after the intervention protocol. RESULTS Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation improved maximal exercise tolerance, with 18.62% increase in peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) and 29.05% in time to reach VO2 peak. VE/VCO2 slope reduced 5.21% after intervention. We also observed increased submaximal exercise tolerance (increase of 70.57 m in the 6-min walk test, p = 0.001), improved quality of life, and reduced perceived fatigue after intervention. DISCUSSION Patients recovered from COVID-19 can develop persistent dysfunctions in almost all organ systems and present different signs and symptoms. The complexity and variability of the damage caused by this disease can make it difficult to target rehabilitation programs, making it necessary to establish specific protocols. In this work, cardiopulmonary rehabilitation improved lung function, respiratory muscle strength, maximal and submaximal exercise tolerance, fatigue and quality of life. Continuous aerobic and resistance training of moderate intensity proved to be effective in the recovery of post-COVID-19 patients.

Abstract
Post COVID-19 condition can occur following infection with SARS-CoV-2 and is characterised by persistent symptoms, including fatigue, breathlessness and cognitive dysfunction, impacting everyday functioning. This study explored how people living with post COVID-19 experienced an eight-week inspiratory muscle training (IMT) rehabilitation programme. Individualised semi-structured interviews with 33 adults (29 female; 49 ± 10 years; 6–11 months post-infection) explored expectations of IMT prior to the intervention, and post intervention interviews explored perceptions of IMT and its impact on recovery. Inductive thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. IMT helped many to feel proactive in managing their symptoms and was associated with perceived improvements in respiratory symptoms, exercise and work capacity, and daily functioning. IMT was well perceived and offers significant potential for use as part of a holistic recovery programme, although it is important to consider the complex, varied symptoms of post COVID-19, necessitating an individually tailored rehabilitation approach.

Abstract
Objective To systematically map the current evidence about the characteristics of health systems, providers and patients to design rehabilitation care for post coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) condition. Methods We conducted a scoping review by searching the databases: MEDLINE®, Embase®, Web of Science, Cochrane COVID-19 Registry and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, from inception to 22 April 2022. The search strategy included terms related to (i) post COVID-19 condition and other currently known terminologies; (ii) care models and pathways; and (iii) rehabilitation. We applied no language or study design restrictions. Two pairs of researchers independently screened title, abstracts and full-text articles and extracted data. We charted the evidence according to five topics: (i) care model components and functions; (ii) safe delivery of rehabilitation; (iii) referral principles; (iv) service delivery settings; and (v) health-care professionals. Findings We screened 13 753 titles and abstracts, read 154 full-text articles, and included 37 articles. The current evidence is conceptual and expert based. Care model components included multidisciplinary teams, continuity or coordination of care, people-centred care and shared decision-making between clinicians and patients. Care model functions included standardized symptoms assessment, telehealth and virtual care and follow-up system. Rehabilitation services were integrated at all levels of a health system from primary care to tertiary hospital-based care. Health-care workers delivering services within a multidisciplinary team included mostly physiotherapists, occupational therapists and psychologists. Conclusion Key policy messages include implementing a multilevel and multiprofessional model; leveraging country health systems' strengths and learning from other conditions; financing rehabilitation research providing standardized outcomes; and guidance to increase patient safety.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The COVID-19 disease frequently causes neurological symptoms. Critically ill patients often require neurorehabilitation for manifestations like intensive care unit (ICU) acquired weakness or encephalopathy. The outcome of these patients, however, is largely unknown. Here we report the clinical course of critical affected COVID-19 patients from hospital admission to discharge from inpatient neurorehabilitation. METHODS Prospective cohort study. COVID-19 patients admitted to neurorehabilitation were included based on a laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection. Assessments [modified Rankin Scale (mRS), Barthel-Index, Fatigue-Severity-Scale-7 and health-related quality of life (EQ-5D-5L)] were conducted at admission and before discharge from inpatient care. Data were compared to the preclinical health status. RESULTS Sixty-one patients (62 ± 13 years, 16 female) were included in the analysis. Most patients had been treated on ICU (n = 58; 57 ± 23 days) and had received invasive ventilation (n = 57; 46 ± 21 days). After discharge from ICU, patients spent on average 57 ± 26 days in neurorehabilitation. The most frequent neurological diagnoses were ICU-acquired weakness (n = 56) and encephalopathy (n = 23). During rehabilitation overall disability improved [mRS median (IQR) 4.0 (1.0) at inclusion and 2.0 (1.0) at discharge]. However, the preclinical health state [mRS 0.0 (0.0)] was not regained (p < 0.001). This was also reflected by the Barthel-Index [preclinical 100.0 (0.0), at inclusion 42.5 (35.0), at discharge 65.0 (7.5); p < 0.001]. Patients had only minor fatigue during inpatient care. Quality of life generally improved but was still low at discharge from hospital. CONCLUSION Patients with neurological sequelae after critical COVID-19 disease showed substantial deficits at discharge from inpatient care up to 4 months after the initial infection. They were restricted in activities of daily living and had reduced health-related quality of life. All patients needed continued medical support and physical treatment.

Abstract
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the causal agent of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a pandemic disease declared in 2020. The clinical manifestations of this pathology are heterogeneous including fever, cough, dyspnea, anosmia, headache, fatigue, taste dysfunction, among others. Survivors of COVID-19 have demonstrated several persistent symptoms derived from its multisystemic physiopathology. These symptoms can be fatigue, dyspnea, chest pain, dry and productive cough, respiratory insufficiency, and psychoemotional disturbance. To reduce and recover from the post-COVID-19 sequelae is fundamental an early and multifactorial medical treatment. Integral post-COVID-19 physiotherapy is a tool to reduce dyspnea, improve lung capacity, decrease psychoemotional alterations, as well as increase the muscle strength affected by this disease. Thus, the aim of this study was to establish a novel physiotherapeutic plan for post-COVID-19 patients, evaluating the effect of this treatment in the reduction of the sequelae in terms of lung capacity, cardio-respiratory, and muscular strength improvements. This was a cross-sectional study in which a protocol of 12 sessions in 4 weeks of physiotherapy was implemented in the patients enrolled. We conducted a medical assessment, an interview, a DASS-21 test, a spirometry, a 6-min walk test, and a hand dynamometer test to evaluate the post-COVID condition of patients before and after the sessions. A total of 42 patients participated in the program. Results of this work showed a decrease of around 50% of post-COVID-19 sequelae and an improvement in the psychoemotional status of patients. Also, we observed an increase of 7.16% in the FEV1 value and 7.56% for FVC. In addition, the maximal functional capacity increased by 0.577 METs, the 6-min walk test performance increased by 13%, and the SpO2 improved by 1.40%. Finally, the handgrip strength test showed an improvement in the left hand and right hand of 2.90 and 2.24 Kg, respectively. We developed this study to propose a novel methodology to provide information for a better treatment and management of post-COVID-19 patients.
