Abstract
The TEMPO oxoammonium cation has been proven to be both an efficient oxidizing reagent and an electrophilic substrate frequently found in organic reactions. Here, we report that this versatile chemical reagent can also be used as an efficient promoter for C- and N-glycosylation reactions through a Ferrier rearrangement with moderate to high yields. This unprecedented reactivity is explained in terms of a Lewis acid activation of glycal by TEMPO+ forming a type of glycal-TEMPO+ mesomeric structure, which occurs through an extended vinylogous hyperconjugation toward the π*(O═N+) orbital [LP(O1) → π*(C1═C2), π*(C1═C2) → σ*(C3-O3), and LP(O6) → π*(O═N+)]. This enables the formation of the respective Ferrier glycosyl cation, which is trapped by various nucleophiles. The extended hyperconjugation (or double hyperconjugation) toward the π*(O═N+) orbital, which confers the Lewis acid character of the TEMPO cation, was supported by natural bond orbital analysis at the M06-2X/6-311+G** level of theory.

Abstract
2-Phenyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl 3-oxide (PTIO•), a persistent nitronyl nitroxide radical, has been used for the detection and trapping of nitric oxide, as a redox mediator for batteries, for the activity estimation of antioxidants, and so on. However, there is no report on the reactivity of PTIO• in the presence of redox-inactive metal ions. In this study, it is demonstrated that the addition of scandium triflate, Sc(OTf)3 (OTf = OSO2CF3), to an acetonitrile (MeCN) solution of PTIO• resulted in an electron-transfer disproportionation to generate the corresponding cation (PTIO+) and anion (PTIO-), the latter of which is suggested to be stabilized by Sc3+ to form [(PTIO)Sc]2+. The decay of the absorption band at 361 nm due to PTIO•, monitored using a stopped-flow technique, obeyed second-order kinetics. The second-order rate constant for the disproportionation, thus determined, increased with increasing the Sc(OTf)3 concentration to reach a constant value. A drastic change in the cyclic voltammogram recorded for PTIO• in deaerated MeCN containing 0.10 M Bu4NClO4 was also observed upon addition of Sc(OTf)3, suggesting that the large positive shift of the one-electron reduction potential of PTIO• (equivalent to the one-electron oxidation potential of PTIO-) in the presence of Sc(OTf)3 may result in the disproportionation. When H2O was added to the PTIO•-Sc(OTf)3 system in deaerated MeCN, PTIO• was completely regenerated. It is suggested that the complex formation of Sc3+ with H2O may weaken the interaction between PTIO- and Sc3+, leading to electron-transfer comproportionation to regenerate PTIO•. The reversible disproportionation of PTIO• was also confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy.

Abstract
Integrated rate equations are straightforward to fit to experimental data to verify a proposed mechanism and to extract kinetic parameters. Such equations are derived for reversible disproportionation/comproportionation reactions with any set of initial concentrations. Extraction of forward and reverse rate constants from experimental data by fitting the rate law to the data is demonstrated for the disproportionation of 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyl-N-oxyl (TEMPO) under acidic conditions where the approach to equilibrium is observed.

Abstract
Recent advances in synthetic methodologies for selective, oxidative transformations using Bobbitt's salt (4-acetamido-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-oxopiperidinium tetrafluoroborate, 1) and its stable organic nitroxide counterpart ACT (4-acetamidoTEMPO, 4-acetamido-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl, 2) have led to increased applications across a broad array of disciplines. Current applications and mechanistic understanding of these metal-free, environmentally benign, and easily accessible organic oxidants now span well-beyond the seminal use of 1 and 2 in selective alcohol oxidations. New synthetic methodologies for the oxidation of alcohols, ethers, amines, thiols, C-H bonds and other functional groups with 1 and 2 along with the field's current mechanistic understandings of these processes are presented alongside our contributions in this area. Exciting new areas harnessing the unique properties of these oxidants include: applications to drug discovery and natural product total synthesis, the development of new electrocatalytic methods for depolymerization of lignin and modification of other biopolymers, in vitro and in vivo nucleoside modifications, applications in supramolecular catalysis, the synthesis of new polymers and materials, enhancements in the design of organic redox flow batteries, uses in organic fuel cells, applications and advancements in energy storage, the development of electrochemical sensors, and the production of renewable fuels.

Abstract
Hydroxylamines, represented by 1-hydroxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine (TEMPOH), are widely involved as active species in various chemical and electrochemical oxidations. The electrochemical behavior of TEMPOH is crucial to understanding the mechanisms of TEMPO-mediated redox sequences. However, compared to abundant studies on TEMPOH electrochemistry in aqueous solutions, the sole value of its oxidation potential Eox(TEMPOH) in organic solutions was reported to be 0.7 V (vs Fc in acetonitrile), seemingly conflicting with experimentally observed facile oxidation of TEMPOH. Herein, the electrochemistry of TEMPOH derivatives in acetonitrile was revisited, featuring much smaller oxidation potentials (about 0 V) than literature ones. Acid/base effects and kinetic studies lent credibility to these new values. Such a 0.7 V energy discrepancy impelled us to review the thermodynamic properties and oxidation mechanisms of TEMPOH deduced from the old value.

Abstract
The reaction of the 2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (dpph•) with resveratrol in methanol (kMeOH = 192 M-1 s-1) is greatly accelerated in the presence of stable nitroxyl radical TEMPO• (kmixMeOH = 1.4 × 103 M-1 s-1). This synergistic effect is surprising because TEMPO• alone reacts with dpph• relatively slowly (kS = 31 M-1 s-1 in methanol and 0.03 M-1 s-1 in nonpolar ethyl acetate). We propose a putative mechanism in which a mutual activation occurs within the acid-base pair TEMPO•/RSV to the resveratrol (RSV) anion and TEMPOH•+ radical cation, both being extremely fast scavengers of the dpph• radical. The fast initial reaction is followed by a much slower but continuous decay of dpph• because a nitroxyl radical is recovered from the TEMPOnium cation, which is reduced directly by RSV/RSV- to TEMPO• or recovered indirectly via a reaction with methanol, producing TEMPOH subsequently oxidized by dpph• to TEMPO•.

Abstract
The binding of aminoxyls to polymers extends their potential use as antioxidants and EPR-reporting groups and opens up new horizons for tailoring new smart materials. In this work, we synthesized and characterized non-sulfated and N-sulfated water-soluble amphiphilic chitosans with a critical micelle concentration of 0.02-0.05 mg/mL that contain 13-18% of aminoglycosides bound with various aminoxyls. Chitosan-polyaminoxyls (CPAs) formed micelles with hydrodynamic radii Rh of ca. 100 nm. The EPR spectra of CPAs were found to depend on the rigidity of the aminoxyl-polymer bond and structural changes caused by sulfation. CPAs demonstrated antioxidant capacity/activity in three tests against reactive oxygen species (ROS) of various nature. The charge of micelles and structure of aminoxyls significantly affected their antioxidant properties. CPAs were low toxic against tumor (HepG2, HeLa, A-172) and non-cancerous (Vero) cells (IC50 > 0.8 mM of aminoglycosides). Sulfated CPAs showed better water solubility and the ability of binding and retaining the anti-tumor antibiotic daunorubicin (DAU). DAU-loaded micelles of CPAs (CPAs-DAU) demonstrated a 1.5-4-fold potentiation of DAU cytotoxicity against several cell lines. CPAs-DAU micelles were found to affect the cell cycle in a manner markedly different from that of free DAU. Our results demonstrated the ability of CPAs to act as bioactive drug delivery vehicles.

Abstract
The strong polycation poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) and the weak polyanion poly(ethylene-alt-maleic acid) (P(E-alt-MA)) were used to build polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) up to 31 layers. A spin-label (SL) was covalently attached to the polyanion for studying the rotational dynamics of the polyacid backbone in a swollen state of the PEMs using continuous-wave (CW) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. In the first step, the spin-labeled poly(ethylene-alt-maleic acid) (SL-P(E-alt-MA)) was used in every polyanion layer to monitor the PEMs growth by analyzing the integrated intensity of the spectra. The buildup was found to be pH-dependent resulting in PEM with different thicknesses. In the second step, SL-P(E-alt-MA) was selectively placed in a single polyanion layer to study the rotational dynamics of the polyacid backbone. The rotational diffusion coefficient of the polyacid backbone RS and the internal rotational diffusion coefficient of the SL attached to the polymer backbone RI were found to be higher at pH 5 than at pH 4, which is related to enhanced mobility.

Abstract
Cyclic oxoammonium salts and DMSO are known as important reagents for their diverse and unique reactivity. In the present work, we have studied the reaction of six- and five-membered oxoammonium salts with DMSO. The reaction includes ∼100% selective transfer of the O atom from the >N+═O group to the S atom of DMSO and structural rearrangement of the remaining cationic framework, leading to the formation of hydrolytically unstable iminium salts. The logarithms of the bimolecular rate constants k of the reaction correlated linearly with the reduction potentials E>N+═O/>N-O•, a relationship known for other electrophile-nucleophile combinations. The kinetic data and results of the DFT calculations allow for the suggestion that the studied process proceeds via the prereactive charge-transfer complex >N+═O···S (O)Me2 and its direct concerted rearrangement to the iminium salts. An alternative mechanism that includes intermediate steps with discrete nitrenium cations can be ruled out on the basis of product analysis and DFT computations. The obtained results allow a deeper understanding of the redox chemistry of a pair of nitroxide radicals-oxoammonium cations.

Abstract
EPR spectroscopy of diamagnetic bio-macromolecules is based on site-directed spin labeling (SDSL). Herein, a novel labeling strategy for proteins is presented. A nitroxide-based spin label has been developed and synthesized that can be ligated to proteins by an inverse-electron-demand Diels-Alder (DAinv ) cycloaddition to genetically encoded noncanonical amino acids. The nitroxide moiety is shielded by a photoremovable protecting group with an attached tetra(ethylene glycol) unit to achieve water solubility. SDSL is demonstrated on two model proteins with the photoactivatable nitroxide for DAinv reaction (PaNDA) label. The strategy features high reaction rates, combined with high selectivity, and the possibility to deprotect the nitroxide in Escherichia coli lysate.

Abstract
The oxidation of [MII (3,5-DTBCat)(DTBbpy)] (M=Ni ([Ni]), Pd ([Pd]), and Pt ([Pt]); 3,5-DTBCat=3,5-di-tert-butylcatecholato; DTBbpy=4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine) afforded the dimeric {[NiII (3,5-DTBSQ)(DTBbpy)](PF6 )}2 ({[Ni](PF6 )}2 ; 3,5-DTBSQ=3,5-di-tert-butylsemiquinonato) and monomeric semiquinonato (SQ) complexes [MII (3,5-DTBSQ)(DTBbpy)](PF6 ) (M=Pd ([Pd](PF6 )) and Pt ([Pt](PF6 ))). The negative solvatochromic properties of the SQ complexes allowed us to estimate the relative order of their dipole moments: [Pd](PF6 )>[Pt](PF6 )>{[Ni](PF6 )}2 . The complexes [Pd](PF6 ) and [Pt](PF6 ) adopt monomeric structures and are stable in CH2 Cl2 and toluene, whereas they gradually disproportionate at room temperature to [M] and 3,5-di-tert-butylbenzoquinone (3,5-DTBBQ) in polar solvents such as THF, MeOH, EtOH, DMF, or DMSO. The results of spectroscopic studies suggested that the oxidized nickel complex adopts a monomeric structure ([Ni](PF6 )) in CH2 Cl2 , but a dimeric structure ({[Ni](PF6 )}2 ) in the other investigated solvents. In polar solvents, {[Ni](PF6 )}2 may disproportionate to [Ni] and 3,5-DTBBQ at 323 K, thereby demonstrating a significant solvent- and metal-dependence in temperature. The relative activities of {[Ni](PF6 )}2 and [M](PF6 ) toward disproportionation are related to the electrochemically estimated Kdis values in CH2 Cl2 and DMF. The present work demonstrates that solvent polarity and the dipole moments of the SQ complexes promote disproportionation, which can be controlled by a judicious choice of the metal ion, solvent, and temperature.

Abstract
The 2,2'-biphenylene-bridged bis(iminosemiquinone) complexes ( tBuClip)M [ tBuClipH4 = 4,4'-di- tert-butyl- N, N'-bis(3,5-di- tert-butyl-2-hydroxyphenyl)-2,2'-diaminobiphenyl; M = Pd, Pt] can be reduced to the bis(aminophenoxide) complexes ( tBuClipH2)M by reaction with hydrazobenzene (M = Pd) or by catalytic hydrogenation (M = Pt). The palladium complex with one aminophenoxide ligand and one iminosemiquinone ligand, ( tBuClipH)Pd, is generated by comproportionation of ( tBuClip)Pd with ( tBuClipH2)Pd in a process that is both slow (0.06 M-1 s-1 in toluene at 23 °C) and only modestly favorable ( Kcom = 1.9 in CDCl3), indicating that both N-H bonds have essentially the same bond strength. The mono(iminoquinone) complex ( tBuClipH)Pt has not been observed, indicating that the platinum analogue shows no tendency to comproportionate ( Kcom < 0.1). The average bond dissociation free energies (BDFE) of the complexes have been established by equilibration with suitably substituted hydrazobenzenes, and the palladium bis(iminosemiquinone) is markedly more oxidizing than the platinum compound, with hydrogen transfer from ( tBuClipH2)Pt to ( tBuClip)Pd occurring with Δ G° = -8.9 kcal mol-1. The palladium complex ( tBuClipH2)Pd reacts with nitroxyl radicals in two observable steps, with the first hydrogen transfer taking place slightly faster than the second. In the platinum analogue, the first hydrogen transfer is much slower than the second, presumably because the N-H bond in the monoradical complex ( tBuClipH)Pt is unusually weak. Using driving force-rate correlations, it is estimated that this bond has a BDFE of 55.1 kcal mol-1, which is 7.1 kcal mol-1 weaker than that of the first N-H bond in ( tBuClipH2)Pt. The two radical centers in the platinum, but not the palladium, complex thus act in concert with each other and display a strong thermodynamic bias toward two-electron reactivity. The greater thermodynamic and kinetic coupling in the platinum complex is attributed to the stronger metal-ligand π interactions in this compound.

Abstract
The review is devoted to diarylnitroxides, which constitute an important type of organic radicals. These compounds are much less investigated than their alkyl counterparts. Meanwhile, they are of great interest, since they provide extensive opportunities for targeted structural modification and control of electronic properties of a molecule for a particular practical application. The existing trends of molecular design of stable diarylnitroxides and general approaches to their synthesis are discussed. Structural details and spin density distribution in diarylnitroxides are considered. Factors determining the stability of both the diarylnitroxide radicals and their oxidized and reduced forms and the redox properties of this class of organic radicals are addressed.
The bibliography includes 128 references.

Abstract
We pioneer a versatile surface modification strategy based on mussel-inspired oxidative catecholamine polymerization for the design of nitroxide-containing thin polymer films. A 3,4-dihydroxy-l-phenylalanine (l-DOPA) monomer equipped with a 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-derived oxidation-labile hydroxylamine functional group is employed as a universal coating agent to generate polymer scaffolds with persistent radical character. Various types of materials including silicon, titanium, ceramic alumina, and inert poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) were successfully coated with poly(DOPA-TEMPO) thin films in a one-step dip-coating procedure under aerobic, slightly alkaline (pH 8.5) conditions. Steadily growing polymer films (∼1.1 nm h-1) were monitored by ellipsometry, and their thicknesses were critically compared with those obtained from atomic force microscopic cross-sectional profiles. The heterogeneous composition of surface-adherent nitroxide scaffolds examined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was correlated to that examined by in-solution polymer analysis via high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, revealing oligomeric structures with up to six repeating units, mainly composed of covalently linked dihydroxyindole along the polymer backbone. Critically, the reversible redox-active character of the nitroxide-containing polymer scaffolds was investigated by cyclic voltammetric measurements, revealing a convenient and facile access route to electrochemically active nitroxide polymer coatings with potential application in electronic devices such as organic radical batteries.
