Comparative studies of the noncovalent interactions in the single‐crystal packing of pyrene, pyrene‐4,5‐dione, and pyrene‐4,5,9,10‐tetraone

Mechanical Bond Induced Enhancement and Purification of Pyrene Emission in the Solid State

To address key concerns on solid-state pyrene-based luminescent materials, we propose a novel and efficient mechanical bond strategy. This strategy results in a transformation from ACQ to AIE effect and a remarkable enhancement of pyrene emission in the solid state. Moreover, an unusual purification of emission is also achieved. Through computational calculation and experimental characterisation, finally determined by X-ray diffraction analysis, we prove that the excellent emissions result from mechanical bond induced refinement of molecular arrangements, including reduced π-π stacking, well-ordered packing and enhanced structural stability. This work demonstrates the potential of mechanical bond in the field of organic luminescent molecules, providing a new avenue for developing high-performance organic luminescent materials.

Synthesis and Optical Properties of a Series of Push-Pull Dyes Based on Pyrene as the Electron Donor

Fifteen push-pull dyes comprising the tetracyclic polyaromatic pyrene have been designed and synthesized. The optical properties of the fifteen dyes have been examined in twenty-two solvents of different polarities. Surprisingly, contrarily to what is classically observed for push-pull dyes of D-π-A structures, a negative solvatochromism could be found for numerous dyes. The photoluminescence and thermal properties of the dyes were also examined. Theoretical calculations were carried out to support the experimental results.

Double-layer Composite Gel Polymer Electrolyte for Organic Sodium-metal Batteries

Organic cathode materials have the advantages of abundant raw materials, high theoretical specific capacity, controllable structure and easy recycling. Pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone (PTO), as one of the typical organic cathode materials, achieves efficient storage and release of Na + . However, its good solubility in traditional organic liquid electrolytes is detrimental to the cyclic stability of batteries. To address this issue, the double-layer composite gel polymer electrolyte (DLCGPE) consisting of poly (ionic liquid) gel polymer electrolyte and plastic crystal electrolyte was developed and applied to organic sodium-metal batteries. This as-prepared DLCGPE displays an ionic conductivity of 2.17×10 -4 S cm -1 and an electrochemical window of 4.8 V. The as-fabricated sodium-symmetric batteries maintain interfacial stability after 500 h of cycling. Furthermore, the PTO/Na batteries could also retain a specific capacity of 201 mAh g -1 after 300 cycles, confirming that DLCGPE achieves the purpose of inhibiting PTO dissolution and maintaining batteries stability. This work broadens the application of asymmetric electrolytes in organic secondary battery.

Intermolecular Interactions of Pyrene and Its Oxides in Toluene Solution

In this work, the conformer-rotamer ensemble sampling tool (CREST), with the underlying semiempirical GFN2-xtb method, was used for automated geometry exploration of the homodimers of pyrene, pyrene-4,5-dione, and pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone, along with the heterodimer of pyrene and pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone. Geometries and energies of the dimers were further refined at the ωB97X-D4/def2-TZVP level of theory, both in the gas phase and in toluene solution. Computations in solution were handled using the CPCM (conductor-like polarizible continuum model) and SMD (solvation model based on density) models. Two previously unidentified pyrene-homodimer conformations were identified, and the effects of oxidation on the geometries and energies of dimerization were explored; in general, oxidation leads to stronger intermolecular interactions and decreased solubility in toluene. For selected dimers, DLPNO-CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ/SMD(Toluene) energies were determined at the DFT geometries and illustrated the accuracy of the ωB97X-D4 approach, with an MAD of 1.47 kJ/mol.

Recent Structural Engineering of Polymer Semiconductors Incorporating Hydrogen Bonds

Highly planar, extended π-electron organic conjugated polymers have been increasingly attractive for achieving high-mobility organic semiconductors. In addition to the conventional strategy to construct rigid backbone by covalent bonds, hydrogen bond has been employed extensively to increase the planarity and rigidity of polymer via intramolecular noncovalent interactions. This review provides a general summary of high-mobility semiconducting polymers incorporating hydrogen bonds in field-effect transistors over recent years. The structural engineering of the hydrogen bond-containing building blocks and the discussion of theoretical simulation, microstructural characterization, and device performance are covered. Additionally, the effects of the introduction of hydrogen bond on self-healing, stretchability, chemical sensitivity, and mechanical properties are also discussed. The review aims to help and inspire design of new high-mobility conjugated polymers with superiority of mechanical flexibility by incorporation of hydrogen bond for the application in flexible electronics.
