Abstract
Both aryl and benzyl polybromides have gained significant importance as reactive building blocks in polymer and materials chemistry. Their preparation primarily relies on established synthetic methods using molecular bromine or N-bromosuccinimide, known for their reliability and effectiveness. However, from a sustainability perspective, these methods suffer from the generation of stoichiometric amounts of byproducts and often encounter selectivity troubles. To mitigate these issues, we extended the greener peroxide-bromide halogenation method, initially developed for monobromides, to afford aryl-cored polybromides in high yields. The same method can be employed in two variants modulated by light irradiation. This external switch can be used to selectively trigger side-chain or core halogenation.

Abstract
Organic solid-state lasers are essential for various photonic applications, yet current-driven lasing remains a great challenge. Charge transfer (CT) complexes formed with p-/n-type organic semiconductors show great potential in electrically pumped lasers, but it is still difficult to achieve population inversion owing to substantial nonradiative loss from delocalized CT states. Here, we demonstrate the lasing action of CT complexes based on exciton funneling in p-type organic microcrystals with n-type doping. The CT complexes with narrow bandgap were locally formed and surrounded by the hosts with high-lying energy levels, which behave as artificial light-harvesting systems. Excitation light energy captured by the hosts was delivered to the CT complexes, functioning as exciton funnels to benefit lasing actions. The lasing wavelength of such composite microcrystals was further modulated by varying the degree of CT. The results offer a comprehensive understanding of exciton funneling in light-harvesting systems for the development of high-performance organic lasing devices.

Abstract
The chiral, triangular-shape hexaimine macrocycles (trianglimines), bearing bulky alkynyl or aryl substituents were synthesized and studied by means of experimental and theoretical methods. The macrocyclization reactions are driven by the extraordinary stability of the trianglimine ring and provided products with high yields. Electrostatic repulsion between imine nitrogen atoms and the substituents forced an anti conformation of the aromatic linkers. Although the DFT-optimized structure of 7 is D3 symmetrical, in the crystal, the macrocycle adopts a bowl-like molecular shape. The macrocycle self-assembles into tail-to-tail dimers by mutual interdigitation of aromatic moieties. In contrast, macrocycle 8 adopts a rigid pillararene-like conformation. The nature of the substituent significantly affects the electronic properties of the linker. As a result, unexpectedly high exciton Cotton effects are observed in the electronic circular dichroism (ECD) spectra. The origin of these effects was subject of an in-depth study.

Abstract
Pentacene is one of the most versatile organic semiconductors. New synthetic strategies to construct the pentacene skeleton are imperative to produce pentacene derivatives with appropriate solubility, stability, and optoelectronic properties for various applications. This paper describes a template-directed approach to pentacene derivatives. In the retrosynthesis, the acene skeleton is viewed as a laddered double strand polyene instead of the more intuitive linearly fused hexagons. Based on this vision, the template strand of polyene is constructed with Wittig olefination, whereas the second strand is accomplished with Knoevenagel condensation to produce pentacene and tetracene derivatives. The synthetic scheme is flexible enough to generate an array of acene derivatives with substitution patterns that were hitherto difficult to access. Amphiphilic pentacene and tetracene derivatives were also synthesized by the template strategy. One pentacene based amphiphilic rod-coil molecule undergoes self-assembly to form helical wire structures that were visualized with TEM.

Abstract
Miniaturized lasers with multicolor output and high spectral purity are of crucial importance for yielding more compact and more versatile photonic devices. However, multicolor lasers usually operate in multimode, which largely restricts their practical applications due to the lack of an effective mode selection mechanism that is simultaneously applicable to multiple wavebands. We propose a mutual mode selection strategy to realize dual-color single-mode lasing in axially coupled cavities constructed from two distinct organic self-assembled single-crystal nanowires. The unique mode selection mechanism in the heterogeneously coupled nanowires was elucidated experimentally and theoretically. With each individual nanowire functioning as both the laser source and the mode filter for the other nanowire, dual-color single-mode lasing was successfully achieved in the axially coupled heterogeneous nanowire resonators. Furthermore, the heterogeneously coupled resonators provided multiple nanoscale output ports for delivering coherent signals with different colors, which could greatly contribute to increasing the integration level of functional photonic devices. These results advance the fundamental understanding of the lasing modulation in coupled cavity systems and offer a promising route to building multifunctional nanoscale lasers for high-level practical photonic integrations.

Abstract
Boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) and its derivatives are known to be efficient photon-harvesting chromophores. However, their study as active materials in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells is still scarce. In this study, the development of new synthetic ways to design original BODIPY-based dumbbell-shape molecules, including a first 2,3,5,6-tetravinyl aromatic BODIPY molecule, is reported. High fill factors can be obtained in BHJ solar cells when blended with a fullerene derivative, leading to a new record BODIPY-based power conversion efficiency of 5.8 %.

Abstract
New synthetic approaches to substituted aromatic compounds are reported. Ring-closing olefin metathesis (RCM)/dehydration and RCM/tautomerization are the key processes in the synthesis of substituted benzenes 3 and phenols 6, respectively. Readily accessible 1,5,7-trien-4-ols 7, which are the precursors of benzenes, were prepared from beta-halo-alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes 11 or beta-halo-alpha,beta-unsaturated esters 19 by utilizing reliable transformations in which cross-coupling with vinylic metal reagents 12 and allylation with allylic metal reagents 13 were employed as carbon-carbon bond forming reactions. RCM of 7, followed by dehydration, afforded a wide variety of substituted benzenes 3. In addition, RCM of 1,5,7-trien-4-ones 9, which were prepared by oxidation of 7, furnished various substituted phenols 6 by automatic tautomerization.

Abstract
Novel solid-emissive indeno[1,2-b]benzo[4,5-e]pyran-11-one-type fluorophores having non-planar structures with sterically hindered substituents (R = butyl, phenyl, and thienyl) have been designed and conveniently synthesized. The fluorescence quantum yields of in 1,4-dioxane were (Phi = 0.053) >> (Phi = 0.013) > (Phi = 0.003). On the other hand, the solid-state fluorescence quantum yields of the fluorophores were (Phi = 0.39) > (Phi = 0.15) > (Phi = 0.06). To elucidate the large differences in the quantum yields in solution and in the solid state and among the fluorophores , we performed time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopic measurements, semi-empirical molecular orbital calculations (AM1 and INDO/S), and X-ray crystallographic analyses of . The comparison of the values of the radiative and non-radiative rate constants determined by the time-resolved spectroscopic measurements in solution and in the crystalline state supported that non-radiative decay is reduced by restriction of the rotation of the phenyl and thienyl rings in the solid state. In addition, the X-ray crystal structures demonstrated that, in and , the non-planar structure with sterically hindered substituents prevents the fluorophores from forming short pi-pi contacts and produces strong solid-state fluorescence. On the other hand, in the crystal of , the formation of continuous intermolecular CH[dot dot dot]S bonding between neighboring fluorophores was found to increase short pi-pi contacts and reduce the fluorescence intensity.

Abstract
Novel heterocyclic quinol-type fluorophores (4 a-c) and (5 a-c) that contain substituents (R = Me, Bu, Ph) with nonconjugated linkages to the chromophore skeleton have been synthesized and their photophysical properties have been investigated in solution and in the solid state. Considerable differences in the absorption and fluorescence spectra were observed between the two states. Quinols 4 a-c and 5 a-c exhibited almost the same absorption and fluorescence spectra in solution; however, their solid-state fluorescence excitation and emission spectra in the crystalline state were quite different. We performed X-ray crystallographic analyses to elucidate the dramatic effect of the substituents of the nonconjugated linkage on the solid-state fluorescence excitation and emission spectra. The relationships between the solid-state photophysical properties and the chemical and crystal structures of 4 a-c and 5 a-c are discussed on the basis of the X-ray crystal structures.

Abstract
We have studied the structural and optical properties of four 2,5-diphenyl-1,4-distyrylbenzene derivatives with all cis double bonds. These compounds belong to a class of nonplanar conjugated compounds possessing a typical Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) property that has no emission in solution but intense emission in crystal. The four molecules are packed in different stacking modes with different intermolecular interactions, resulting in different crystalline state photoluminescence (PL) efficiency. The torsional molecular configuration increases the intermolecular distances effectively in the crystalline state, which decreases the difference of the optical properties from the frozen isolated molecules to the crystalline state. The Stokes shifts of these compounds are very large and the PL spectra have only one broad emission band with poor structure, due to the relatively large configuration difference between the ground state and the first singlet excited state, and the abundant vibration energy levels of the torsional molecule with changeable conformation.
