Abstract
Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies are an effective route to fabricate tailor made scaffolds for tissue engineering (TE) and regenerative medicine with microstereo-lithography (µSLA) being one of the most promising techniques to produce high quality 3D structures. Here, we report the crosslinking studies of fully biobased unsaturated polyesters (UPs) with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) as the unsaturated monomer (UM), using thermal and µSLA crosslinking processes. The resulting resins were fully characterized in terms of their thermal and mechanical properties. Determination of gel content, water contact angle (WCA), topography and morphology analysis by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were also performed. The results show that the developed unsaturated polyester resins (UPRs) have promising properties for µSLA. In vitro cytotoxicity assays performed with 3T3-L1 cell lines showed that the untreated scaffolds exhibited a maximum cellular viability around 60 %, which was attributed to the acidic nature of the UPRs. The treatment of the UPRs and scaffolds with ethanol (EtOH) improved the cellular viability to 100%. The data presented in this manuscript contribute to improve the performance of biobased unsaturated polyesters in additive manufacturing.

Abstract
The vast majority of commodity polymers are acquired from petrochemical feedstock, and these resources will plausibly be depleted within the next 100 years. Therefore, the utilization of carbon-neutral renewable resources for the production of polymers is crucial in modern green chemistry. Herein, we report an eco-friendly strategy that uses enzyme catalysis to design biobased unsaturated (co)polyesters from muconic acid derivatives. This method is an attractive pathway for the production of well-defined unsaturated polyesters with minimum side reactions. A suite of characterization techniques was performed to probe the reaction mechanism and properties of the obtained polyesters. It is rationalized that the alkene functionality of the muconate monomers plays an important role in the enzyme catalysis mechanism. The rendered polyesters possessed excellent thermal stabilities and unreacted alkene functionality that can consecutively undergo chain extension, copolymerization, or act as an anchor for other functional groups. These properties open new avenues in the fields of unsaturated polyester resins and photosensitive coatings.

Abstract
Despite its optical clarity and good weatherability, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) cannot meet the needs of special occasions due to its deficient thermal and mechanical properties. To overcome these shortcomings, a type of novel bio-based monomer, mono-acrylated isosorbide, was used as a comonomer for the poly(methyl methacrylate) via a solution polymerization process. The chemical structure, the thermal and mechanical properties of the copolymerized PMMA were characterized. When the molar content of the mono-acrylated isosorbide was increased from 0% to 15%, the glass transition temperature Tg of the copolymerized PMMA was increased from 151.2 °C to 172.5 °C, and the initial decomposition temperature (T5%) was increased from 323.1 °C to 396.3 °C. Moreover, the impact strength of copolymerized PMMA increased from 10.59 kJ m−2 to 17.19 kJ m−2 and the tensile strength improved from 84.02 MPa to 97.56 MPa when the mono-acrylated isosorbide was incorporated with different contents. The incorporation of rigid and thermally stable isosorbide could contribute to the improved thermal and mechanical properties of PMMA, which would find important applications in the military and aeronautical materials under harsh service environments. With bio-based monoester of acrylated isosorbide as the comonomer, copolymerized poly(methyl methacrylate) showed improved thermal stability and mechanical properties.![]()

Abstract
Biobased unsaturated polyester thermosets as potential replacements for petroleum-based thermosets were designed. The target of incorporating rigid units, to yield thermosets with high thermal and mechanical performance, both in the biobased unsaturated polyester (UP) and reactive diluent (RD) while retaining miscibility was successfully achieved. The biobased unsaturated polyester thermosets were prepared by varying the content of isosorbide, 1,4-butanediol, maleic anhydride, and succinic anhydride in combination with the reactive diluent isosorbide-methacrylate (IM). Isosorbide was chosen as the main component in both the UP and the RD to enhance the rigidity of the formed thermosets, to overcome solubility issues commonly associated with biobased UPs and RDs and volatility and toxicity associated with styrene as RD. All UPs had good solubility in the RD and the viscosity of the mixtures was primarily tuned by the feed ratio of isosorbide but also by the amount of maleic anhydride. The flexural modulus and storage modulus were tailorable by altering the monomer composition The fabricated thermosets had superior thermal and mechanical properties compared to most biobased UP thermosets with thermal stability up to about 250 °C and a storage modulus at 25 °C varying between 0.5 and 3.0 GPa. These values are close to commercial petroleum-based UP thermosets. The designed tailorable biobased thermosets are, thus, promising candidates to replace their petroleum analogs.

Abstract
The development of high-performing nanocomposites of homogeneously dispersed graphene oxide in a waterborne polyester matrix with controlled interfacial interactions is a daunting challenge owing to the presence of strong cohesive energy in both. Thus, in this study, graphene oxide was functionalized with toluene diisocyanate and butane diol through a simple method and incorporated into the waterborne polyester matrix through a facile in situ bulk polymerization technique without using any compatibilizing agent or organic solvent for the first time. The thermoset of the nanocomposite was formed by curing it with hyperbranched epoxy of glycerol and poly(amido amine). The resultant thermosetting nanocomposites with 0.1-1 wt % functionalized graphene oxide exhibited significant enhancement in mechanical properties such as elongation at break (245-360%), tensile strength (7.8-39.4 MPa), scratch hardness (4 to >10 kg), toughness (17.18-86.35 MJ/m3), Young's modulus (243-358 MPa), impact resistance (8.3 to >9.3 kJ/m), and thermostability. Further, the Halpin-Tsai model was used to predict the alignment of graphene oxide. The nanocomposite was also biodegradable against the Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterial strain. Furthermore, this nanocomposite exhibited strong catalytic activity for the aza-Michael addition reaction. Thus, the nanocomposite can be utilized as a high-performing sustainable material in different potential applications including as heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract
A straightforward method for immobilizing in situ generated silver nanoparticles on the surface of a photoactivable isosorbide-derived monomer is developed with the objective to design a functional material having antibacterial properties. The photoinduced thiol-ene mechanism involved in these syntheses is described by the electron spin resonance/spin trapping technique. The resulting materials with or without silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) were used as films or as coatings on glass substrate. The surface of the synthesized materials was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy, and their thermal and mechanical properties were evaluated by dynamic-mechanical thermal tests, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analyses, along with pencil hardness, nanoindentation, and scratch resistance tests. The photoinduced formation of Ag NPs is also confirmed by UV spectrophotometry. Finally, a primary investigation demonstrates the antibacterial properties of the isosorbide-derived material against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, as well as its cytocompatibility toward NIH 3T3 fibroblastic cells.

Abstract
Bio-based commercially available succinate, itaconate and 1,4-butanediol are enzymatically co-polymerized in solution via a two-stage method, using Candida antarctica Lipase B (CALB, in immobilized form as Novozyme® 435) as the biocatalyst. The chemical structures of the obtained products, poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and poly(butylene succinate-co-itaconate) (PBSI), are confirmed by 1H- and 13C-NMR. The effects of the reaction conditions on the CALB-catalyzed synthesis of PBSI are fully investigated, and the optimal polymerization conditions are obtained. With the established method, PBSI with tunable compositions and satisfying reaction yields is produced. The 1H-NMR results confirm that carbon-carbon double bonds are well preserved in PBSI. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) results indicate that the amount of itaconate in the co-polyesters has no obvious effects on the glass-transition temperature and the thermal stability of PBS and PBSI, but has significant effects on the melting temperature.

Abstract
The telomerisation of 1,3-butadiene with a Pd/TPPTS catalytic system in water or an organic solvent was used for the synthesis of C8 ethers from isosorbide, an agro-based diol. The use of water/oil biphasic reaction conditions allowed the selective synthesis of monoethers with improved rates upon using inorganic bases as promotors. As isosorbide is a non-symmetric diol, the two hydroxyl groups display different reactivities. 2-O-substituted-monoethers were preferentially obtained if water was used as the solvent, whereas in DMSO 5-O-substituted monoethers were the major products. Complete conversions of isosorbide with up to 94% monoether selectivities were obtained. The optimized reaction conditions were successfully applied to isomannide and isoidide for the selective synthesis of the derived ethers. An improved reactivity of the endo-hydroxy groups of isosorbide and isomannide versus the exo-hydroxy groups of isosorbide and isoidide was observed if the reaction was performed in DMSO instead of water.
