Abstract
The precise sequence of a protein's primary structure is essential in determining its folding pathways. To emulate the complexity of these biomolecules, functional block copolymers consisting of segmented triblocks with distinct functionalities positioned in a sequence-specific manner are designed to control the polymer chain compaction. Triblock polymers P- b -C- b -F and P- b -F- b -C and random diblock copolymer P- b -C- r -F consist of a hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) block and a hydrophobic block with coumarin (C) and ferrocene (F) moieties that are grafted in a sequence-specific or random manner onto the hydrophilic block. External stimuli such as UVB light, redox, and chemical cues influence the functional hydrophobic block to alter the packing parameters that are monitored with spectroscopic and scattering techniques. Interestingly, the positioning of the stimuli-responsive moiety within the hydrophobic block of P- b -C- b -F, P- b -F- b -C, and P- b -C- r -F affects the extent of the hydrophobic-hydrophilic balance in block copolymers that renders orthogonal control in stimuli-responsive transformation of self-assembled vesicles to micelles.

Abstract
A set of ionic quasi-block copolymers were investigated to determine the effects of their composition and structure on their performance in their application as solid-state battery electrolytes. Diffusion and electrochemical tests have shown that these new quasi-block electrolytes have comparable performance to traditional block copolymers reaching ionic conductivities of 3.8 × 10-4 S cm-1 and lithium-ion diffusion of 4.6 × 10-12 m2 s-1 at 80 °C. It was illustrated that the mechanical properties of each quasi-block electrolyte are highly dependent on the order of monomer addition in polymer synthesis while the phase morphology hints at each of the quasi-blocks' unique compositional make up.

Abstract
In order to improve the water solubility and, therefore, bioavailability and therapeutic activity of anticancer hydrophobic drug α-tocopherol succinate (α-TOS), in this work, copolymers were synthesized via free radicals from QMES (1-[4,7-dichloroquinolin-2-ylmethyl]-4-methacryloyloxyethyl succinate) and VP (N-vinyl-2-pirrolidone) using different molar ratios, and were used to nanoencapsulate and deliver α-TOS into cancer cells MCF-7. QMES monomer was chosen because the QMES pendant group in the polymer tends to hydrolyze to form free 4,7-dichloro-2-quinolinemethanol (QOH), which also, like α-TOS, exhibit anti-proliferative effects on cancerous cells. From the QMES-VP 30:70 (QMES-30) and 40:60 (QMES-40) copolymers obtained, it was possible to prepare aqueous suspensions of empty nanoparticles (NPs) loaded with α-TOS by nanoprecipitation. The diameter and encapsulation efficiency (%EE) of the QMES-30 NPs loaded with α-TOS were 128.6 nm and 52%; while for the QMES-40 NPs loaded with α-TOS, they were 148.8 nm and 65%. The results of the AlamarBlue assay at 72 h of treatment show that empty QMES-30 NPs (without α-TOS) produced a marked cytotoxic effect on MCF-7 breast cancer cells, corresponding to an IC50 value of 0.043 mg mL-1, and importantly, they did not exhibit cytotoxicity against healthy HUVEC cells. Furthermore, NP-QMES-40 loaded with α-TOS were cytotoxic with an IC50 value of 0.076 mg mL-1, demonstrating a progressive release of α-TOS; however, the latter nanoparticles were also cytotoxic to healthy cells in the range of the assayed concentrations. These results contribute to the search for a new polymeric nanocarrier of QOH, α-TOS or other hydrophobic drugs for the treatment of cancer or others diseases treatable with these drugs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We developed a novel polymer insect repellent conjugate for extended release and decreased skin permeation of the volatile insect repellent p-menthane-3,8-diol (PMD). METHODS PMD was conjugated with acryloyl chloride via an ester bond to form acryloyl-PMD, which was subsequently copolymerised with acrylic acid at varying molar ratios. Copolymer structures were characterised by 1H NMR and FT-IR, analysed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), molecular weights and reactivity ratios determined, and repellent loading assessed. RESULTS Using porcine liver esterases, ~45% of the insect repellent was released over five days. Penetration and permeation studies of the copolymer and free repellent using excised, full-thickness porcine ear skin showed no detectable permeation of the copolymer through skin compared to the PMD. Moreover, tape stripping revealed that over 90% of the copolymer remained on the outer surface of the skin, whereas free PMD was within all skin layers. A planarian toxicity fluorescence assay indicated that that the copolymer is unlikely to be a significant irritant when applied topically. CONCLUSIONS this study demonstrates the feasibility of the copolymer approach to develop extended-release insect repellents while reducing skin uptake and transdermal permeation of the small-molecular-weight active ingredient, in order to minimise any adverse effects.

Abstract
In this work, we studied the question of whether it is possible to develop a one-step approach for the creation of microphase-separated materials with long-range order with the help of spontaneous gradient copolymers, i.e., formed during controlled copolymerization solely due to the large difference in the reactivity ratios. To that end, we studied the polymerization-induced microphase separation in bulk on the example of a monomer pair with realistic parameters based on styrene (S) and vinylpirrolydone (VP) by means of computer simulation. We showed that for experimentally reasonable chain lengths, the structures with long-range order start to appear at the conversion degree as low as 76%; a full phase diagram in coordinates (fraction of VP-conversion degree) was constructed. Rather rich phase behavior was obtained; moreover, at some VP fractions, order-order transitions were observed. Finally, we studied how the conversion degree at which the order-disorder transition occurs changes upon varying the maximum average chain length in the system.

Abstract
Structural relaxation in polymers occurs at temperatures in the glass transition range and below. At these temperatures, crystallization is controlled by diffusion and nucleation. A sequential occurrence of structural relaxation, nucleation, and crystallization was observed for several homopolymers during annealing in the range of the glass transition. It is known from the literature that all of these processes are strongly influenced by geometrical confinements. The focus of our work is copolymers, in which the confinements are caused by the random sequence of monomer units in the polymer chain. We characterize the influence of these confinements on structure formation and relaxation in the vicinity of the glass transition. The measurements were performed with a hydrogenated nitrile-butadiene copolymer (HNBR). The kinetics of the structural relaxation and the crystallization was measured using fast differential scanning calorimetry (FDSC). This technique was selected because of the high sensitivity, the fast cooling rates, and the high time resolution. Crystallization in HNBR causes a segregation of non-crystallizable segments in the macromolecule. This yields a reduction in mobility in the vicinity of the formed crystals and as a consequence an increased amount of so-called "rigid amorphous fraction" (RAF). The RAF can be interpreted as self-assembled confinements, which limit and control the crystallization. An analysis of the crystallization and the relaxation shows that the kinetic of both is identical. This means that the Kohlrausch exponent of relaxation and the Avrami exponent of crystallization are identical. Therefore, the crystallization is not controlled by nucleation but by diffusion and is terminated by the formation of RAF.

Abstract
Here we report on the preparation and mechanical characterization of a 2-D self-assembled membrane formed by ionically crosslinking the polyelectrolyte parts of a gradient amphiphilic copolymer at oil and water interfaces. To fabricate these membranes, chloroform solutions of styrene-acrylic acid copolymers were suspended as pendant drops in an aqueous embedding phase. Due to the amphiphilic nature of these molecules, the copolymer chains migrate to the oil-water interface creating an interfacial layer. Upon the addition of zinc acetate to the embedding phase, crosslinks between copolymer molecules are formed via zinc-carboxylate complexes. While ionically crosslinked block copolymer membranes were critically damaged after one expansion cycle, ionically crosslinked gradient copolymers formed durable membranes that maintained their physical integrity through multiple expansion-compression-expansion cycles. This difference in mechanical behavior is attributed to the fact that gradient copolymers are more effective interfacial modifiers and have a significantly different molecular alignment at the oil-water interface. Additionally by changing the incubation time from 20 to 30 minutes, the low-strain dilatational modulus of these membranes was significantly increased due to higher interfacial coverage and crosslinking density. Longer incubation times also led to a distinct yield point and plastic deformation behavior at larger strains. Further mechanical characterization of the membranes showed that they can be quite robust and that by replacing the internal oil phase with an aqueous solution, future testing of membrane filtration and permeation may be possible.

Abstract
Gradient copolymers with differential sequences linearly changing from methyl methacrylate (MMA) to dodecyl methacrylate (DMA) were efficiently synthesized by a concurrent tandem catalysis in the ruthenium-catalyzed living radical (co)polymerization coupled with the in situ transesterification of MMA with 1-dodecanol assisted by titanium isopropoxide [Ti(Oi-Pr)4]. The key is to perfectly synchronize the two reactions throughout the tandem catalysis by using molecular sieves (MSs), which facilitates the MMA transesterification into DMA by removing the resulting methanol. The MMA/DMA gradient copolymers had an extremely broad glass transition temperature range (i.e., hardly detectable by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)), in sharp contrast to the random and the block counterparts of similar compositions.

Abstract
Sequence regulation of monomers is undoubtedly a challenging issue as an ultimate goal in polymer science. To efficiently produce sequence-controlled copolymers, we herein developed the versatile tandem catalysis, which concurrently and/or sequentially involved ruthenium-catalyzed living radical polymerization and in situ transesterification of methacrylates (monomers: RMA) with metal alkoxides (catalysts) and alcohols (ROH). Typically, gradient copolymers were directly obtained from the synchronization of the two reactions: the instantaneous monomer composition in feed gradually changed via the transesterification of R(1)MA into R(2)MA in the presence of R(2)OH during living polymerization to give R(1)MA/R(2)MA gradient copolymers. The gradient sequence of monomers along a chain was catalytically controlled by the reaction conditions such as temperature, concentration and/or species of catalysts, alcohols, and monomers. The sequence regulation of multimonomer units was also successfully achieved in one-pot by monomer-selective transesterification in concurrent tandem catalysis and iterative tandem catalysis, providing random-gradient copolymers and gradient-block counterparts, respectively. In contrast, sequential tandem catalysis via the variable initiation of either polymerization or in situ transesterification led to random or block copolymers. Due to the versatile adaptability of common and commercially available reagents (monomers, alcohols, catalysts), this tandem catalysis is one of the most efficient, convenient, and powerful tools to design tailor-made sequence-regulated copolymers.
