Abstract
AIM To synthesize evidence regarding the effectiveness of technology-based psychosocial interventions in improving health-related outcomes among family caregivers of stroke survivors. DESIGN A systematic review and meta-analysis was reported by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. METHODS Randomized controlled trials that investigated the effects of psychosocial interventions delivered through information and communication technologies on self-efficacy, caregiving competence, caregiver burden, perceived social support, anxiety, depression, health-related quality of life and cost-effectiveness were included. Two researchers independently selected studies, extracted data, and appraised the quality of the included studies. Subgroup analysis, sensitivity analysis, and narrative synthesis were conducted. DATA SOURCES Ten electronic databases (PubMed, CENTRAL, Web of Science, Scopus, CINHAL, Embase, Institution of Electrical Engineers Xplore, Ovid Medline, PsycINFO, ProQuest Dissertations and Thesis) were searched up to February 2023. RESULTS Nineteen studies involving 1717 participants fulfilled the eligibility criteria. Technology-based psychosocial interventions significantly improved self-efficacy (SMD = .62), caregiving competence (SMD = .55), depression (SMD = -.25) and anxiety (SMD = -.35). However, perceived social support, caregiver burden, and health-related quality of life did not show significant improvements. Subgroup analyses revealed that the interventions, lasting from 4 to 6 weeks and encompassing comprehensive contents, exhibited larger effect sizes. None of the studies measured cost-effectiveness. CONCLUSION The technology-based psychosocial interventions are effective in enhancing self-efficacy and caregiving competence, as well as alleviating anxiety, and depression among family caregivers of stroke survivors. Future research should investigate interventions delivered through various digital platforms using well-designed RCTs with in-depth qualitative data collection and measurement of health and cost-effectiveness outcomes. IMPACT Through psychosocial interventions, healthcare providers in clinical and community settings, particularly nurses, could incorporate technologies into current stroke care practices. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION It is not applicable as this is a systematic review. REGISTRATION The protocol was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42023402871).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES A large gap exists in the development of culturally sensitive interventions to reduce stress related to dementia care among Chinese Americans, one of the fastest growing minority populations in the United States. We developed and pilot tested the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a peer mentoring program for Chinese American dementia caregivers. METHOD A pilot randomized controlled trial was conducted among 38 Chinese American caregivers in New York City. Four outcome variables-caregiving competence, loneliness, caregiver burden, and depressive symptoms-were measured at baseline and 3-month and 9-month follow-ups. The study protocol and preliminary results are available at clinicltrial.gov [NCT04346745]. RESULTS The feasibility of the intervention was high, as indicated by an acceptable retention rate, fidelity, and positive feedback from caregivers and mentors. Compared with the control group, the intervention group had greater reductions in scores for loneliness at 3-month follow-up and for caregiver burden and depressive symptoms at 9-month follow-up. We did not find significant differences in caregiving competence between the two groups. CONCLUSION The results indicated the high feasibility and potential efficacy of empowering existing human resources of experienced caregivers in the same ethnic community to improve the mental health of Chinese caregivers. Further research is needed to test the efficacy in a larger sample of this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Brain tumor patients confront numerous challenges arising from diagnosis and treatment, and these impact the patient's physical, mental, and social functions at all levels. Primary informal caregivers assume a pivotal role in home-based patient care. Of particular importance are the coping strategies employed by family caregivers, as they can influence both their own health and the overall quality of home care. This study aimed to explore the associations among family function, caregiving competence, and coping strategies among primary informal caregivers. METHODS This study adopted a cross-sectional correlational design and convenience sampling to survey the primary informal caregivers of 111 brain tumor patients. The study instruments included the Family Assessment Device General Function, Caregiving Competence Scale, and Revised Ways of Coping Checklist. RESULTS The findings of this study revealed a significant positive correlation between the family function of primary informal caregivers and their employment of emotion-focused coping (r = 0.209, p < 0.05). Furthermore, caregiving competence exhibited a positive association with problem-focused coping (r = 0.242, p < 0.05) and emerged as a significant predictor of problem-focused coping (β = 0.182, p < 0.05). However, neither family function (r = 0.059, p < 0.05) nor caregiving competence (r = 0.031, p < 0.05) demonstrated significant associations with total coping strategies. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study affirmed that enhancing the caregiving competence of primary informal caregivers of brain tumor patients can facilitate the adoption of problem-focused coping strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stroke can cause a variety of physical and psychosocial disturbances for both survivors and their family caregivers (i.e., stroke dyads). Dyadic psychoeducation appears to be a promising approach for providing knowledge of stroke and self-care or caregiving skills to improve stroke dyads' health outcomes. Therefore, a family-focused psychoeducation intervention was designed and tested to improve the health outcomes of stroke dyads. OBJECTIVE To examine the effects of a family-focused dyadic psychoeducational intervention on the functional and psychosocial outcomes of stroke survivors and family caregivers. DESIGN A single-blinded, parallel-group randomised controlled trial with repeated-measures design. SETTINGS Two general hospitals and one rehabilitation facility in Jinan, China. PARTICIPANTS Stroke survivors and family caregivers (N = 162 dyads). METHODS The dyads were randomly allocated to either psychoeducation or control group with usual care only (N = 81 dyads per group). The intervention included three structured face-to-face education sessions (one hour per session) in hospital pre-discharge and four weekly telephone counselling calls post-discharge. Study outcomes included survivor functioning and caregiver burden (primary outcomes), and other secondary outcomes (i.e., caregiving competence, dyads' coping, depressive and anxiety symptoms, family functioning, and dyadic relationship, as well as survivor healthcare utilisation and caregiving-related injury). Data were collected at baseline (T0) and immediately (T1) and 3 months post-intervention (T2). The intervention effects were estimated using generalised estimating equation models. RESULTS Participants in the psychoeducation group revealed significantly greater reductions on caregiver burden than the control group at T1 (β = -6.01, p = 0.026) and T2 (β = -6.73, p = 0.039), but non-significant effects on survivor functioning, except in emotion domain at T1 (β = 7.22, p = 0.015). In addition, the intervention demonstrated significantly greater improvements on caregiving competence (β = 0.98, p = 0.013; β = 1.58, p < 0.001), survivors' depressive symptoms (β = -1.56, p = 0.007; β = -2.06, p = 0.005), and dyadic relationship (β = 0.26, p = 0.012; β = 0.27, p = 0.022) at T1 and T2, as well as on survivor coping at T2 (β = 6.73, p = 0.008). CONCLUSIONS Our study added values on the benefits of family-focused dyadic psychoeducation to routine stroke rehabilitation and family care. Future research can evaluate its long-term effects for families of stroke survivors with diverse socio-demographic and stroke-related characteristics. Abstract
BACKGROUND Provision of care for frail older adults with multiple chronic diseases (multimorbidity) poses increasing challenge for family caregivers. Our study aims to evaluate to what extent caregiving competence, social support and positive aspects of caregiving can mitigate the effect of burden experienced by family caregivers of frail older adults with multimorbidity. METHODS A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in 2 primary care clinics. Family caregivers of older adults aged 65 years and above were invited to complete interviewer-administered questionnaires. Descriptive statistics were used to describe sociodemographic and clinical data. Caregiver's burden was measured using the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI). Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare differences in Caregiving Competence Scale (CCS), short Positive Aspects of Caregiving (S-PAC) and modified Medical Outcome Study Social support (mMOS-SS). Multivariable logistic regression was used to analyse factors associating with caregiver burden. RESULTS A total of 188 participants were recruited. 71.8% reported caregiver burden (ZBI score ≥ 10). Caregivers who perceived burden had significantly lower CCS, S-PAC and mMOS-SS scores than those who did not (10.0 vs 11.6; 26.8 vs 29.8; 24.8 vs 31.4, p < 0.001 respectively). Factors significantly associated with higher odds of perceived burden were presence of alternative caregivers (OR 3.3, 95% CI 1.09, 10.19, p = 0.04), use of community resources (OR 4.4, 95% CI 1.15, 16.83, p = 0.03) and time spent caregiving per week (OR 1.1, 95% CI 1.02, 1.10, p = 0.003). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION This study found that caregivers had high perception of burden as demand in caregiving may increase. Anticipating caregiver burden and social support needs may be important part of managing these frail older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability in China and worldwide, affecting the health and well-being of both stroke survivors and their family caregivers (i.e. stroke dyads). Dyadic interventions targeting both as active participants can be beneficial for the dyads' health and well-being. Psychoeducation is a potentially acceptable approach to developing participants' knowledge about their disease management to promote their recovery. This study aims to explore the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effects of a family-focused dyadic psychoeducational intervention for stroke dyads. METHODS This study was a single-blinded, parallel-group randomised controlled trial. Totally, a convenience sample of 40 stroke dyads was recruited. The intervention included three in-hospital face-to-face education sessions and four weekly post-discharge follow-up telephone counselling sessions. Feasibility was assessed by the rates of recruitment, attritions, and adherence to the intervention. Acceptability was evaluated via semi-structured qualitative interviews. Preliminary intervention effects were evaluated on primary (survivors' functioning and caregivers' burden) and secondary (caregivers' competence and dyads' coping, depressive and anxiety symptoms, family functioning, and dyadic relationship) outcomes. RESULTS Intervention feasibility was established with satisfactory recruitment (76.9%), attrition (10%), and intervention completion (75%) rates. Qualitative interviews suggested that the intervention was acceptable and useful to stroke dyads. The intervention effects on survivors' functioning were significant in the memory and thinking (F = 8.39, p = 0.022, η = 0.18) and mobility (F = 5.37, p = 0.026, η = 0.12) domains, but not significant on their overall functioning (F = 2.39, p = 0.131). Caregiver burden in the intervention group was significantly greater reduced at post-test than the control group, with a large effect size (F = 7.55, p = 0.013, η = 0.28). For secondary outcomes, this intervention suggested a significant effect on caregivers' competence (F = 5.20, p = 0.034, η = 0.22), but non-significant effects on other outcomes. CONCLUSIONS The family-focused dyadic psychoeducation programme was feasible and acceptable for stroke dyads and showed preliminary effects for stroke dyads. These findings support a larger-scale controlled trial to further examine its intervention effects over a longer-term follow-up. TRIAL REGISTRATION This study was retrospectively registered as a randomised controlled trial in the ISRCTN Registry. Registration Date: October 10, 2022. REGISTRATION NUMBER ISRCTN18158500.

Abstract
Family caregivers provide round-the-clock care to their family members who had a stroke. The detrimental effects of caregiving on caregiver's health would lead to the abandonment of caregiver role and institutionalization of stroke survivors. This study aims to determine the factors associated with the perceived health status of family caregivers to stroke survivors. This study conducted a secondary analysis of the baseline data of 142 family caregivers of stroke survivors nested within a longitudinal randomized controlled trial. Potential factors were identified according to the Pittsburgh Mind-Body Center model and were analyzed with hierarchical multiple regression models. The results indicated that stroke caregivers exhibited comparable perceived physical health with general population but poorer perceived mental health. Severity of depressive symptoms (β = -0.37, P < .001) remained the strongest and most significant factor associated with perceived mental health, followed by confidence in problem-solving (β = -0.21, P < .05). Moreover, caregiving competence (β = 0.29, P < .001) was the sole significant psychological factor associated with perceived physical health. Caregiving competence, problem-solving abilities, and severity of depressive symptoms are significant modifiable correlates of the perceived health of caregivers. Intervention for improving these psychological responses of caregivers is suggested incorporated in stroke rehabilitation programs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND For family caregivers, sudden stroke events and heavy caring works are stressful events. At present, controversies about the factors affecting caregivers' stress response and their correlation with coping styles still exist. OBJECTIVE To explore the influencing factors and coping styles of mental health stress responses of stroke caregivers and promote caregivers to adopt positive coping styles for diseases and caring works. METHODS The convenience sampling method is used to select stroke caregivers as the research objects. The general information questionnaires, Relative Stress Scale (RSS), General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), Social Support Rate Scale (SSRS), Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), and Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire (SCSQ) are utilized for investigation. RESULTS 205 valid questionnaires are returned. Analysis suggests that the influential factors of mental health stress responses of stroke caregivers include the course of the disease, the impact of the disease on economic conditions, obligation to take care of other family members, understanding of stroke-associated diseases, and whether the patient is at risk. Social support and self-efficacy are negatively correlated with stress responses, while negative coping style is significantly positively correlated with stress responses. CONCLUSIONS By increasing social support and self-efficacy, medical workers can guide stroke caregivers to take positive coping styles, thereby reducing their mental health stress responses.

Abstract
PURPOSE (1) To identify measures used to evaluate the impact of caregiving among caregivers of persons with stroke, spinal cord injury, and amputation; and (2) to systematically evaluate their clinimetric properties reported in validation studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two separate systematic reviews (Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Pubmed/Medline) were conducted. COSMIN guidelines were used to assess clinimetric properties and methodological quality of studies. RESULTS (1) 154 studies published between 2008 and May 2019 were included, in which 48 measures were used, mostly describing negative impact. Thirty measures were used only once and not further described. (2) In general, structural validity, internal consistency, and hypothesis testing were often investigated. Reliability, cross-cultural and criterion validity to a lesser extent, and scale development and content validity were rarely described. Tests of measurement error and responsiveness were exceptional. Most supporting evidence was found for the Zarit Burden Interview Short Form, Caregiver Burden Scale and Positive Aspects of Caregiving Questionnaire. CONCLUSIONS There is a wide variety of impact of caregiving measures. The present study provided a detailed overview of what is known about clinimetric characteristics of 18 different measures repeatedly used in research. The overview provides clinicians a guidance of appropriate measure selection. PROSPERO REGISTRATION CRD42018094796IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONClinicians should be aware that information about measure development and clinimetric properties for most measures used to assess impact of informal caregiving is incomplete. Most supporting evidence was found for the Zarit Burden Interview Short Form, Caregiver Burden Scale and Positive Aspects of Caregiving Questionnaire. This overview of clinimetric properties provides clinicians guidance for selection of an appropriate measure.
