Surface-Supported Robust 2D Lanthanide-Carboxylate Coordination Networks

Surface-supported metal-organic frameworks with geometric topological diversity via scanning tunneling microscopy

Surface-supported metal-organic frameworks (SMOFs) are long-range ordered periodic 2D lattice layers formed by inorganic metal nodes and organic ligands via coordination bonds on substrate surfaces. The atomic resolution STM lays a solid foundation for the conception and construction of SMOFs with large area, stable structure, and special function. In this review, the cutting-edge research of SMOFs from design strategy, preparation process, and how to accurately achieve structural and functional diversity are reviewed. Furthermore, we focus on the design and construction of novel and fascinating periodic and fractal structures, in which some typical honeycomb structures, Kagome lattice, hexagonal geometry, and Sierpiński triangles are summarized, and the related prospects for designing functional nanoscale systems and architectures are prospected. Finally, the challenges faced in the design and synthesis of SMOFs are denoted, and the application prospect and development trend of SMOFs are forecasted based on the current research status.

Binary Mg-1 at%Gd alloy anode for high-performance rechargeable magnesium batteries

Rechargeable magnesium batteries (RMBs) become a highly promising candidate for the large-scale energy storage system by right of the high volumetric capacity, intrinsic safety and abundant resources of Mg anode. However, the uneven Mg stripping and large overpotential will cause a severe pitting perforation and the followed failure of Mg anode. Herein, we proposed a high-performance binary Mg-1 at% Gd alloy anode prepared by the melting and hot extrusion. The introduction of 1 at% Gd element can effectively reduce the Mg2+ diffusion energy barrier (0.34 eV) on alloy surface and induces the formation of a robust and low-resistance electrolyte/anode interphase, thus enabling a uniform and fast Mg plating/stripping. As a result, the Mg-1 at.% Gd anode displays a largely enhanced life of 220 h and a low overpotential of 213 mV at a high current density of 5.0 mA cm-2 with 2.5 mAh cm-2 . Moreover, the assembled Mg-1 at.% Gd//Mo6 S8 full cell delivers a high rate performance (73.5 mAh g-1 at 5 C) and ultralong cycling stability of 8000 cycles at 5 C. This work brings new insights to design the new-type and practical Mg alloy anodes for commercial RMBs.

Size Control of On-Surface Self-Assembled Nanochains Using Soft Building Blocks

Owing to their conformational flexibility, soft molecules with side chains play a crucial role in molecular self-assembly or self-organization processes toward bottom-up building of supramolecular nanostructures. However, the influence of the rotating side chains in the confined space and subsequent surface-confined supramolecular self-assembly remains rarely explored. Herein, using the spatial confinement effect between soft building blocks, we realized size control on surface-confined supramolecular coordination self-assembly through the synergy between the repulsive steric hindrance and the attractive chemical interactions. Combining scanning tunneling microscopy with density functional theory calculations and Monte Carlo simulations, we elucidated the effective repulsive force generated by the thermal wiggling motions of the soft building blocks, allowing length tuning of the self-assembled chain structures. Through a delicate balance between the repulsive interaction induced by the spatial confinement effect and the coordinate chemical interaction, we provide a new strategy for controlling the geometry of the on-surface supramolecular nanostructures.

Synthesis of Large-Scale High-Quality Metal-Organic Frameworks on Cu(100) via Hierarchical Dehydrogenation Reactions

Thermal stimulus has been considered as a promising strategy for controlling on-surface reactions, allowing the formation of diverse products on metal substrates. Here, we successfully achieve hierarchical dehydrogenation reactions of amino groups on a Cu(100) surface. By carefully adjusting the experimental parameters, we synthesize large-scale and low-defect density surface metal-organic frameworks on copper surfaces. Our work sheds light on a controllable route for the synthesis of high-quality metal-organic coordination supramolecular structures via on-surface chemistry.

Dilute Gd hydroxycarbonate particles for localized spin qubit integration

Molecular spins are considered as the quantum hardware to build hybrid quantum processors in which coupling to superconducting devices would provide the means to implement the necessary coherent manipulations. As an alternative to large magnetically-dilute crystals or concentrated nano-scale deposits of paramagnetic molecules that have been studied so far, the use of pre-formed sub-micronic spherical particles of a doped Gd@Y hydroxycarbonate is evaluated here. Particles with an adjustable number of spin carriers are prepared through the control of both particle size and doping. Bulk magnetic properties and continuous wave and time-domain-EPR spectroscopy show that the Gd spins in these particles are potential qubits with robust quantum coherence. Monolayers of densely-packed particles are then formed interfacially and transferred successfully to the surface of Nb superconducting resonators. Alternatively, these particles are disposed at controlled localizations as isolated groups of a few particles through Dip-Pen Nanolithography using colloidal organic dispersions as ink. Altogether, this study offers new material and methodologies relevant to the development of viable hybrid quantum processors.

Lanthanide metal-organic network featuring strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy

The coordination of lanthanides atoms in two-dimensional surface-confined metal-organic networks is a promising path to achieve an ordered array of single atom magnets. These networks are highly versatile with plenty of combinations of molecular linkers and metallic atoms. Notably, with an appropriate choice of molecules and lanthanide atoms it should be feasible to tailor the orientation and intensity of the magnetic anisotropy. However, up to now only tilted and almost in-plane easy axis of magnetizations were reported in lanthanide-based architectures. Here we introduce an Er-directed two-dimensional metallosupramolecular network on Cu(111) featuring strong out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy. Our results will contribute to pave avenues for the use of lanthanides in potential applications in nanomagnetism and spintronics.

Engineering Periodic Dinuclear Lanthanide-Directed Networks Featuring Tunable Energy Level Alignment and Magnetic Anisotropy by Metal Exchange

The design of lanthanide multinuclear networks is an emerging field of research due to the potential of such materials for nanomagnetism, spintronics, and quantum information. Therefore, controlling their electronic and magnetic properties is of paramount importance to tailor the envisioned functionalities. In this work, a multidisciplinary study is presented combining scanning tunneling microscopy, scanning tunneling spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray linear dichroism, X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, density functional theory, and multiplet calculations, about the supramolecular assembly, electronic and magnetic properties of periodic dinuclear 2D networks based on lanthanide-pyridyl interactions on Au(111). Er- and Dy-directed assemblies feature identical structural architectures stabilized by metal-organic coordination. Notably, despite exhibiting the same +3 oxidation state, there is a shift of the energy level alignment of the unoccupied molecular orbitals between Er- and Dy-directed networks. In addition, there is a reorientation of the easy axis of magnetization and an increment of the magnetic anisotropy when the metallic center is changed from Er to Dy. Thus, the results show that it is feasible to tune the energy level alignment and magnetic anisotropy of a lanthanide-based metal-organic architecture by metal exchange, while preserving the network design.

Subsurface-Carbon-Induced Local Charge of Copper for an On-Surface Displacement Reaction

Transition-metal carbides have sparked unprecedented enthusiasm as high-performance catalysts in recent years. Still, the catalytic properties of copper carbide remain unexplored. By introducing subsurface carbon to Cu(111), a displacement reaction of a proton in a carboxyl acid group with a single Cu atom is demonstrated at the atomic scale and room temperature. Its occurrence is attributed to the C-doping-induced local charge of surface Cu atoms (up to +0.30 e/atom), which accelerates the rate of on-surface deprotonation via reduction of the corresponding energy barrier, thus enabling the instant displacement of a proton with a Cu atom when the molecules adsorb on the surface. This well-defined and robust Cu^δ+ surface based on subsurface-carbon doping offers a novel catalytic platform for on-surface synthesis.

Tuning the Magnetic Anisotropy of Lanthanides on a Metal Substrate by Metal-Organic Coordination

Taming the magnetic anisotropy of lanthanides through coordination environments is crucial to take advantage of the lanthanides properties in thermally robust nanomaterials. In this work, the electronic and magnetic properties of Dy-carboxylate metal-organic networks on Cu(111) based on an eightfold coordination between Dy and ditopic linkers are inspected. This surface science study based on scanning probe microscopy and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, complemented with density functional theory and multiplet calculations, reveals that the magnetic anisotropy landscape of the system is complex. Surface-supported metal-organic coordination is able to induce a change in the orientation of the easy magnetization axis of the Dy coordinative centers as compared to isolated Dy atoms and Dy clusters, and significantly increases the magnetic anisotropy. Surprisingly, Dy atoms coordinated in the metallosupramolecular networks display a nearly in-plane easy magnetization axis despite the out-of-plane symmetry axis of the coordinative molecular lattice. Multiplet calculations highlight the decisive role of the metal-organic coordination, revealing that the tilted orientation is the result of a very delicate balance between the interaction of Dy with O atoms and the precise geometry of the crystal field. This study opens new avenues to tailor the magnetic anisotropy and magnetic moments of lanthanide elements on surfaces.

Lanthanide-porphyrin species as Kondo irreversible switches through tip-induced coordination chemistry

Metallosupramolecular chemical protocols are applied to in situ design dysprosium porphyrin complexes on Au(111) by sequential deposition of 2H-4FTPP species and Dy, resulting in the production of premetallated Dy-2H-4FTPP, partially metallated Dy-1H-4FTPP and fully metallated Dy-0H-4FTPP complexes, as determined by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. A zero bias resonance is found in the Dy-2H-4FTPP species which, upon study of its spatial distribution and behavior with temperature, is assigned to a Kondo resonance resulting from an unpaired spin in the molecular backbone, featuring a Kondo temperature (TK) of ≈ 21 K. Notably, the Kondo resonance can be switched off by removing one hydrogen atom of the macrocycle through tip-induced voltage pulses with submolecular precision. The species with this Kondo resonance can be laterally manipulated illustrating the potential to assemble artificial Kondo lattices. Our study demonstrates that the pre-metallation of macrocycles by lanthanides and their controlled manipulation is a novel strategy to engineer in situ tunable Kondo nanoarchitectures, enhancing the potential of coordination chemistry for spintronics.

On-surface preparation of coordinated lanthanide-transition-metal clusters

The study of lanthanide (Ln)-transition-metal (TM) heterometallic clusters which play key roles in various high-tech applications is a rapid growing field of research. Despite the achievement of numerous Ln-TM cluster compounds comprising one Ln atom, the synthesis of Ln-TM clusters containing multiple Ln atoms remains challenging. Here, we present the preparation and self-assembly of a series of Au-bridged heterometallic clusters containing multiple cerium (Ce) atoms via on-surface coordination. By employing different pyridine and nitrile ligands, the ordered coordination assemblies of clusters containing 2, 3 and 4 Ce atoms bridged by Au adatoms are achieved on Au(111) and Au(100), as revealed by scanning tunneling microscopy. Density functional theory calculations uncover the indispensable role of the bridging Au adatoms in constructing the multi-Ce-containing clusters by connecting the Ce atoms via unsupported Ce-Au bonds. These findings demonstrate on-surface coordination as an efficient strategy for preparation and organization of the multi-Ln-containing heterometallic clusters.

Stabilisation of tri-valent ions with a vacant coordination site at a corrole-metal interface

By exploiting an established on-surface metallation strategy, we address the ability of the corrolic macrocycle to stabilise transition metal ions in high-valent (III) oxidation states in metal-supported molecular layers. This approach offers a route to engineer adsorbed metal complexes that cannot be easily fabricated by organic synthesis methods and bear a vacant axial coordination site for catalytic conversions.

2-D assembly of supramolecular nanoarchitectures on Mg(0001)

In this work, a Mg(0001) single crystal is used as a novel template to grow 2D supramolecular nano-architectures. By using scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and high-resolution X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HR-XPS), the formation of either a homo-molecular or metal-organic network is reported for carboxylic or amino functionalized molecules, respectively.

Assembly of Robust Holmium-Directed 2D Metal-Organic Coordination Complexes and Networks on the Ag(100) Surface

We describe the formation of lanthanide-organic coordination networks and complexes under ultra-high-vacuum conditions on a clean Ag(100) surface. The structures comprise single Ho atoms as coordination centers and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (from terephtalic acid, TPA) as molecular linkers. Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, we find two different chiral phases of surface-supported metal-organic structures incorporating Ho atoms. Density functional theory calculations can explain the structure of both binding motifs and give possible reasons for their varying formation under the respective Ho/TPA ratios, as well as deposition and annealing temperatures. Metal-ligand interactions drive the formation of cloverleaf-shaped mononuclear Ho-TPA₄ complexes establishing supramolecular arrays stabilized through hydrogen bonding. A 2D lanthanide-organic reticulation is observed when changing the stoichiometry between the two building blocks. The combined insights from scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory reveal the relative stability, charge transfer, and bonding environment of both motifs.

Ho-Mediated Alkyne Reactions at Low Temperatures on Ag(111)

Low-temperature approaches to catalytic conversions promise efficiency, selectivity, and sustainable processes. Control over certain coupling reactions can be obtained via the pre-positioning of reactive moieties by self-assembly. However, in the striving field of on-surface synthesis atomistic precision and control remains largely elusive, because the employed coupling reactions proceed at temperatures beyond the thermal stability of the supramolecular templates. Here, utilizing scanning tunneling microscopy, we demonstrate terminal alkyne on-surface reactions mediated by Ho atoms at a weakly reactive Ag(111) substrate at low-temperatures. Density functional theory calculations confirm the catalytic activity of the involved adatoms. Pre-deposited Ho induces alkyne dehydrogenation starting at substrate temperatures as low as 100 K. Ho arriving at molecularly pre-covered surfaces held at 130 and 200 K produces covalent enyne-linked dimers and initiates cyclotrimerization, respectively. Statistical product analysis indicates a two-step pathway for the latter, whereby the enyne intermediates influence the distribution of the products. High chemoselectivity results from the absence of cyclotetramerization and diyne-forming homocoupling. Our analysis indicates that mainly the arriving Ho adatoms enable the coupling. These findings support the concept of dynamic heterogeneity by single-atom catalysts and pave the way for alternative means to control on-surface reactions.

Lanthanide-Directed Assembly of Interfacial Coordination Architectures-From Complex Networks to Functional Nanosystems

Metallo-supramolecular engineering on surfaces provides a powerful strategy toward low-dimensional coordination architectures with prospects for several application fields. To date, most efforts have relied on transition metal centers, and only recently did we pioneer lanthanide-directed assembly. Coordination spheres and motifs with rare-earth elements generally display distinct properties and structural features. The size of the cations and shielding role of the 4f orbitals induces high coordination numbers, frequently entailing flexible coordination geometries. Following Pearson's hard and soft acid-base theory, lanthanide cations are hard Lewis acids and thus feature strong affinity for nitrile, terpyridine, and carboxylate donor moieties. The prevailing oxidation state is +3, although in certain compounds stable +2 or +4 cations occur. The chemistry of rare-earth elements is currently receiving widespread attention, as they are key ingredients for established and emerging 21st century science and technology with relevance for energy conversion, sensing, catalysis, magnetism, photonics, telecommunications, superconductivity, biomedicine, and quantum engineering. In this Account, we review recent advances toward the design of interfacial supramolecular nanoarchitectures incorporating lanthanide centers. We apply controlled ultrahigh vacuum conditions whereby atomistically clean substrates are prepared and exposed to ultrapure atomic and molecular beams of the chosen sublimable constituents. We focus on direct molecular-level investigations and in situ assembly operative close to equilibrium conditions. Our scanning probe microscopy techniques provide atomistic insights regarding the formation, stability, and manipulability of metal-organic compounds and networks. In order to gain deeper insights into the experimental findings, complementary computational analysis of bond characteristics, electronic properties, and coordination motifs has been performed for several case studies. Exemplary elements under consideration include cerium, gadolinium, dysprosium, and europium. By the use of ditopic molecular linkers equipped with carbonitrile moieties, adaptive coordination spheres are unveiled, yielding vertices with two- to sixfold symmetry. The respective coordination nodes underlie the expression of complex networks, such as semiregular Archimedean tessellations for cerium- or gadolinium-directed assemblies and random-tiling quasicrystalline characteristics for europium. Tunability via constituent stoichiometry regulation is revealed for bimolecular arrangements embedding europium centers, simultaneously connecting to carbonitrile and terypyridine ligands. Ditopic carboxylate linkers yield robust reticular networks based on a lateral coordination number of 8 for either gadolinium or dysprosium complexation, featuring a prevalent ionic nature of the coordination bond. Orthogonal insertion protocols give rise to d-f reticular architectures exploiting macrocyclic tetradentate cobalt complexation and peripheral carbonitrile-gadolinium coordination, respectively. Furthermore, lanthanides may afford metalation of adsorbed free-base tetrapyrrole species and can be engaged for interfacial synthesis of sandwich compounds, thus providing prospects for columnar design of coordination architectures. Finally, direct manipulation experiments achieved lateral displacement of single supramolecules and molecular rotation of sandwich or other molecular units. These findings evidence prospects for advancing molecular machinery components. The presented accomplishements herald further advancements in metallo-supramolecular design on surfaces, with versatile nanosystems and architectures emanating from the flexible coordination spheres. The embedding and systematic rationalization of lanthanide centers in tailored interfacial environments are keys to establishing relations between structure and physicochemical characteristics toward the generation of novel functionalities with technological significance.

Stabilizing surface Ag adatoms into tunable single atom arrays by terminal alkyne assembly

Ordered two-dimensional arrays of silver adatoms with tunable metal atom density stabilized by 1,4-diethynyl-2,5-dimethylbenzene, a terminal alkyne, were prepared on Ag(111) and scrutinized by scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory calculations. Stabilization of the adatom arrays was attributed to the substrate-mediated electron localizations of the Ag adatom and terminal alkynyl in the molecule.

Ubiquitous deprotonation of terephthalic acid in the self-assembled phases on Cu(100)

We performed an exhaustive study of terephthalic acid (TPA) self-assembly on a Cu(100) surface, where first-layer molecules display three sequential phase transitions in the 200–400 K temperature range, corresponding to different stages of molecular deprotonation.

Construction of molecular regular tessellations on a Cu(111) surface

Through thermal treatment, three regular molecular tessellations are constructed on Cu(111) with a linear DOD precursor.

Influence of Relativistic Effects on Assembled Structures of V-Shaped Bispyridine Molecules on M(111) Surfaces Where M = Cu, Ag, Au

The self-assembly behavior of a V-shaped bispyridine, 1,3-bi(4-pyridyl)benzene (BPyB), was studied by scanning tunneling microscopy on the (111) surfaces of Cu, Ag, and Au. BPyB molecules coordinately bonded with active Cu adatoms on Cu(111) in the form of complete polygonal rings at low coverages. On Ag(111), BPyB molecules aggregated into two-dimensional islands by relatively weak intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The coexistence of hydrogen bonds and coordination interaction was observed on the BPyB-covered Au(111) substrate. Density functional theory calculations of the metal-molecule binding energy and Monte Carlo simulations were performed to help understand the forming mechanism of molecular superstructures on the surfaces. In particular, the comprehensive orbital composition analysis interprets the observed metal-organic complexes and reveals the importance of relativistic effects for the extraordinary activity of gold adatoms. The relativistic effects cause the energy stability of the Au 6s atomic orbital and decrease the energy separation between the Au 6s and 5d orbitals. The enhanced sd hybridization strengthens the N-Au-N bond in BPyB-Au-BPyB complexes.

Prediction and clarification of structures of (bio)molecules on surfaces

The design of future materials for biotechnological applications via deposition of molecules on surfaces will require not only exquisite control of the deposition procedure, but of equal importance will be our ability to predict the shapes and stability of individual molecules on various surfaces. Furthermore, one will need to be able to predict the structure patterns generated during the self-organization of whole layers of (bio)molecules on the surface. In this review, we present an overview over the current state of the art regarding the prediction and clarification of structures of biomolecules on surfaces using theoretical and computational methods.

Dysprosium-carboxylate nanomeshes with tunable cavity size and assembly motif through ionic interactions
