Abstract
The external electric field has emerged as a powerful tool for building molecular switches with excellent properties. In this work, we investigate the impact of an external electric field on the transition between lithium salt and electride-like molecule conformations in Li@corannulene. Remarkably, the distance between the Li atom and the corannulene bottom displays a sharp increase under the influence of an external electric field strength of F-z = 110 × 10-4 a.u. As the external electric field strength increases, the Li atom brings about different directions of charge transfer (CT). The natural population analysis (NPA) charge and the molecular electrostatic potential (ESP) results show that the intermolecular CT occurs from the Li atom to the corannulene with the F-z ranging from 0 to 100 × 10-4 a.u. Interestingly, when the external electric field reaches F-z = 110 × 10-4 a.u., the CT is oriented from the corannulene to the Li atom. Moreover, electron localization function (ELF) basins are presented under an F-z of 110 × 10-4 a.u., which indicates that Li@corannulene exhibits electride-like (e-⋯[Li@corannulene]+) molecules and lithiation salt (Li+[corannulene]-) under an F-z of 0 to 100 × 10-4 a.u. Significantly, the differences in charge transfer also contribute to a significant improvement in hyperpolarizabilities (βtot) during the conformation transition from lithiation salt (Li+[corannulene]-) to electride-like (e-⋯[Li@corannulene]+) molecules. This study explores the potential of Li@corannulene as a promising second-order NLO material, and the external electric field provides an efficient strategy for designing and developing NLO switching devices.

Abstract
The first-of-its-kind tetra-substituted sumanene derivative, featuring the push-pull chromophore architecture, has been successfully designed. The inclusion of both strong electron-withdrawing (CF3) and electron-donating (carbazole) moieties in this buckybowl compound has enhanced the charge transfer characteristics of the molecule. This enhancement was supported by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and emission spectra analyses along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The application of the title sumanene-carbazole push-pull chromophore as a selective recognition material for cesium cations (Cs+) was also presented. The title compound exhibited effective and selective Cs+-trapping ability, characterized by a high apparent binding constant value (at the level of 105) and a low limit of detection (0.09-0.13 μM). Owing to the tuned optical properties of the title push-pull chromophore, this study marks the first time in sumanene-tethered chemoreceptor chemistry where efficient tracking of Cs+ binding was possible with both absorption and fluorescence spectroscopies. This work introduces a new approach toward tuning the structure of bowl-shaped optical chemoreceptors.

Abstract
We disclose an indenoannulated tridecacyclene comprising a central cyclooctatetraene moiety with multiple adjacent pentagonal rings which is accessible in a concise synthetic sequence. The saddle-shaped geometry of the non-benzenoid polycyclic scaffold and its unique packing behavior in the solid state were characterized by X-ray crystallography. In electrochemical studies, the compound undergoes seven reversible redox events comprising five reductions and two oxidations. The dicationic and dianionic species obtained by chemical oxidation and reduction, respectively, were characterized spectroscopically in solution. Density functional theory calculations were applied to provide insights into aromaticity evolution in the respective charged species, highlighting the beneficial effect of the non-benzenoid moieties on charge stabilization.

Abstract
Mixed-valence (MV) dimers have been extensively investigated, however, the structure and properties of purely organic MV trimers based on open-shell polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons remain elusive. Herein, unprecedented MV BN-doped corannulene radical cations [BN-Cor1]3 ⋅⋅2+ ⋅ 2[BArylF 4 ]- and [BN-Cor2]3 ⋅⋅2+ ⋅ 2[BArylF 4 ]- were synthesized via chemical oxidation, and their structures were unambiguously confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These uncommon radical cations consist of three corannulene cores and two [BArylF 4 ]- anions, and three corannulene motifs [BN-Cor1]3 ⋅⋅2+ and [BN-Cor2]3 ⋅⋅2+ in the unit cell exhibit a trimer structure with a slipped π-stacking configuration. Detailed structural analyses further revealed that the corannulene cores exhibit an infinite layered self-assembly configuration, allowing their potential applications as building blocks for molecular conductors. The detection of a forbidden transition (Δms =±2) by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy further confirmed the existence of two unpaired electrons in the π-trimers and the MV characteristic of these two species. Variable-temperature EPR and conductivity measurements suggested that the BN-doped π-trimers exhibited antiferromagnetic coupling and conductivity properties.

Abstract
Pentagon-heptagon embedded polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have aroused increasing attention in recent years due to their unique physicochemical properties. Here, for the first time, this report demonstrates a facile method for the synthesis of a novel B2 N2 -doped PAH (BN-2) containing two pairs of pentagonal and heptagonal rings in only two steps. In the solid state of BN-2, two different conformations, including saddle-shaped and up-down geometries, are observed. Through a combined spectroscopic and calculation study, the excited-state dynamics of BN-2 is well-investigated in this current work. The resultant pentagon-heptagon embedded B2 N2 -doped BN-2 displays both prompt fluorescence and long-lived delayed fluorescence components at room temperature, with the triplet excited-state lifetime in the microsecond time region (τ = 19 µs). The triplet-triplet annihilation is assigned as the mechanism for the observed long-lived delayed fluorescence. Computational analyses attributed this observation to the small energy separation between the singlet and triplet excited states, facilitating the intersystem crossing (ISC) process which is further validated by the ultrafast spectroscopic measurements.

Abstract
Stacked teacups inspired the idea that columnar assemblies of stacked bowl-shaped molecules may exhibit a unique dynamic behavior, unlike usual assemblies of planar disc- and rod-shaped molecules. On the basis of the molecular design concept for creating higher-order discotic liquid crystals, found in our group, we synthesized a sumanene derivative with octyloxycarbonyl side chains. This molecule forms an ordered hexagonal columnar mesophase, but unexpectedly, the columnar assembly is very soft, similar to sugar syrup. It displays, upon application of a shear force on solid substrates, a flexible bending motion with continuous angle variations of bowl-stacked columns while preserving the two-dimensional hexagonal order. In general, alignment control of higher-order liquid crystals is difficult to achieve due to their high viscosity. The present system that brings together higher structural order and mechanical softness will spark interest in bowl-shaped molecules as a component for developing higher-order liquid crystals with unique mechanical and stimuli-responsive properties.

Abstract
Incorporating non-hexagonal rings into polycyclic conjugated hydrocarbons (PCHs) can significantly affect their electronic and optoelectronic properties and chemical reactivities. Here, we report the first bottom-up synthesis of a dicyclohepta[a,g]heptalene-embedded PCH (1) with four continuous heptagons, which are arranged in a "Z" shape. Compared with its structural isomer bischrysene 1 R with only hexagonal rings, compound 1 presents a distinct antiaromatic character, especially the inner heptalene core, which possesses clear antiaromatic nature. In addition, PCH 1 exhibits a narrower highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy gap than its benzenoid contrast 1 R, as verified by experimental measurements and theoretical calculations. Our work reported herein not only provides a new way to synthesize novel PCHs with non-alternant topologies but also offers the possibility to tune their electronic and optical properties.

Abstract
Perfluorinated cycloparaphenylenes (F-[n]CPP, n = 5-8), boron nitride nanohoop (F-[5]BNNH), and buckybowls (F-BBs) were proposed as anion receptors via anion-π interactions with halide anions (Cl- , Br- and I- ), and remarkable binding strengths up to -294.8 kJ/mol were computationally verified. The energy decomposition approach based on the block-localized wavefunction method, which combines the computational efficiency of molecular orbital theory and the chemical intuition of ab initio valence bond theory, was applied to the above anion-π complexes, in order to elucidate the nature and selectivity of these interactions. The overall attraction is mainly governed by the frozen energy component, in which the electrostatic interaction is included. Remarkable binding strengths with F-[n]CPPs can be attributed to the accumulated anion-π interactions between the anion and each conjugated ring on the hoop, while for F-BBs, additional stability results from the curved frameworks, which distribute electron densities unequally on π-faces. Interestingly, the strongest host was proved to be the F-[5]BNNH, which exhibits the most significant anisotropy of the electrostatic potential surface due to the difference in the electronegativities of nitrogen and boron. The selectivity of each host for anions was explored and the importance of the often-overlooked Pauli exchange repulsion was illustrated. Chloride anion turns out to be the most favorable anion for all receptors, due to the smallest ionic radius and the weakest destabilizing Pauli exchange repulsion.

Abstract
We report the synthesis and late-stage diversification of a new class of hetero-buckybowl, BN-embedded dibenzocorannulenes (B2 N2 -DBCs). The synthesis is achieved via one-shot halogenative borylation, comprising the nitrogen-directed haloboration of alkyne and an intramolecular bora-Friedel-Crafts reaction, which provides BN-embedded dibenzocorannulene possessing two bromo substituents (B2 N2 -DBC-Br). B2 N2 -DBC-Br undergoes diversification via coupling reactions to provide a variety of arylated derivatives (B2 N2 -DBC-R), exhibiting strong blue fluorescence. An organic light-emitting diode (OLED) employing one of the derivatives as an emitter exhibited a high external quantum efficiency of 6.6 % and long operational lifetime of 907 h at an initial luminance of 1000 cd m-2 , indicating the significant potential for the development of efficient and stable hetero-buckybowl-based OLED materials.

We disclose a successive π‐expansion of pyracylene towards boat‐shaped polycyclic scaffolds. The unique structural features of the resulting compounds were revealed by X‐ray crystallographic analysis. Depending on the extent of π‐expansion the compounds display intense bathochromically shifted absorption bands in their UV/Vis spectra and are prone to several redox events as documented by cyclic voltammetry. The experimental observations are in line with the computational studies based on density functional theory, suggesting progressive narrowing of the HOMO–LUMO gap and distinct evolution of the electronic structure and aromaticity.

Abstract
The para-hydrogen (p-H2) matrix-isolation technique has been scarcely used to record electronic absorption and emission spectra. It is expected that its small matrix shifts due to diminished molecular interactions and the softness of the lattice might be advantageous to help identify the carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands. In this article, we present infrared, fluorescence excitation, and dispersed fluorescence spectra of sumanene (C21H12), a bowl-shaped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and a fragment of C60, isolated in solid p-H2. The recorded vibrational wavenumbers from infrared and dispersed fluorescence agree with the scaled harmonic vibrational wavenumbers calculated with the B3PW91/6-311++G(2d,2p) and B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,2p) methods. The recorded fluorescence excitation spectra are consistent with the spectra of jet-cooled gas-phase C21H12 reported previously by Kunishige et al. We found a rather small matrix shift of 55 cm-1 for the S1-S0 electronic transition origin located at 27 888 cm-1. Vibrational wavenumbers associated with the S1 state of C21H12 inferred from the experimental spectrum can be assigned mostly to fundamental normal modes; they are in satisfactory agreement with scaled harmonic vibrational wavenumbers calculated at the TD-B3PW91/6-311++G(2d,2p) level of theory. Significantly more vibrational modes of the S1 state were identified as compared with those in the reported gas-phase work. The potential of p-H2 matrix-isolation spectroscopy to provide electronic excitation spectra suitable for comparison to astronomical observations is discussed by comparing the spectra of C21H12 isolated in solid p-H2 and in solid Ne, a matrix host commonly employed in astrochemistry.

Abstract
The biomedical application of corannulene π-bowls is historically limited by low solubility and bioavailability despite the potential in their unique electronic properties for new functional materials. Herein, the unexpected role and molecular mechanism of Corranulene π-bowls are uncovered in biomedical applications as an effective anticancer agent for Warburg effect mediated selective tumor targeting. The corannulene triazolyl monosaccharides Cor-sugars exhibit highly potent cytotoxicity against human cancer cells and effectively inhibit xenograft growth of hyperglycolytic tumors. Particularly, the galactose-conjugated Cor-gal exhibits superior in vivo anticancer efficacy in A549 tumor models with outstanding safety profile compared to doxorubicin. Moreover, the combined treatment of Cor-gal with immune checkpoint inhibitor results in an effective synergy in treating H460 human lung carcinoma. An uptake mechanism study reveals that Cor-sugars exploit tumor-specific glucose transporter glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1) for targeted cell delivery and intra-tumoral accumulation through the cancer-specific Warburg effect. Their significant anticancer activity is attributed to multiphasic DNA-binding and cell cycle alteration effects. This study uncovers new molecular properties of corannulene buckybowl and enabling their potential new applications in biomedical engineering.

Abstract
Peripherally π-extended corannulenes bearing quintuple azahelicene units, 10 and 11, were prepared and their dynamic behaviors were studied experimentally and theoretically. The fused corannulenes were synthesized from sym-pentabromocorannulene in three steps. X-Ray diffraction analysis for 10 displayed a conformer possessing a P(M) bowl chirality and a PPMPM (PMPMM) helical chirality, which was found to be the most stable conformer(s). Variable-temperature NMR measurements of 10 and 11 revealed that their structural isomers can be interconvertible in solution, depending on the steric congestion around the helical scaffolds. Automated search for conformers in the equilibrium and transition states by Artificial Force Induced Reaction (AFIR) method revealed their interconversion networks, including bowl-inversion and helical-inversion. This analysis indicated that the co-existing corannulene and azahelicene moieties influence the conformational dynamics, which leads to mitigation of the activation energy barriers for isomerization.

Abstract
We report an anti-folded bowl-shaped bisdibenzocorannulene (BDBC) featuring a new chair-cyclohexane-like hexagon as a bridge of two dibenzocorannulene moieties. The neutral compound showed multiple redox-active properties and could be converted to the corresponding redox states through chemical reduction or oxidation. Chemical reduction of BDBC by stoichiometric addition of metallic potassium in the presence of [18]crown-6 ether, provided a radical anion BDBC.- and a dianion BDBC2- , respectively; while chemical oxidation by silver hexafluoroantimonate(V), converted the neutral compound to an open-shell singlet diradical dication (BDBC.. )2+ . The structural consequences of both electron-reduction and oxidation were closely related to the release of ring-strain of the bowl-shaped π-scaffold and imposed steric hindrance of the hexagonal bridge. In addition, the unusual open-shell nature of the dication could mainly be attributed to the changing of localized antiaromaticity in the closed-shell structure to delocalized character in the biradical, and thus the emergence of weakly bonded π-electrons.

Abstract
The encapsulation of the tetracationic palladium metallosquare with four pyrene-bis-imidazolylidene ligands [1]4+ with a series of organic molecules was studied by Electrospray ionization Travelling Wave Ion-Mobility Mass Spectrometry (ESI TWIM-MS). The method allowed to determine the Collision Cross Sections (CCSs), which were used to assess the size changes experienced by the host upon encapsulation of the guest molecules. When fullerenes were used as guests, the host is expanded ΔCCS 13 Å2 and 23 Å2 , for C60 or C70 , respectively. The metallorectangle [1]4+ was also used for the encapsulation of a series of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and naphthalenetetracarboxylic diimide (NTCDI), to form complexes of formula [(NTCDI)2 (PAH)@1]4+ . For these host:guest adducts, the ESI IM-MS studies revealed that [1]4+ is expanded by 47-49 Å2 .. The energy-minimized structures of [1]4+ , [C60 @1]4+ , [C70 @1]4+ , [(NTCDI)2 (corannulene)@1]4+ in the gas phase were obtained by DFT calculations.Introduction.

Abstract
The introduction of chalcogen atoms into a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon structure is an established method to tune material properties. In the context of corannulene (C20 H10 ), a fragment of fullerene C60 , such structural adjustments have given rise to an emerging class of functional and responsive molecular materials. In this minireview, our aim is to discuss the synthesis and properties of such chalcogen (sulfur, selenium, and tellurium) derivatives of corannulene.

Abstract
Flat corannulene has been considered so far only as a transition state of the bowl-to-bowl inversion process. This study was driven by the prediction that substituents with strong steric repulsion could destabilize the bowl-shaped conformation of this molecule to such an extent that the highly unstable planar geometry would become an isolable molecule. To examine the substituents' effect on the corannulene bowl depth, optimized structures for the highly-congested decakis(t-butylsulfido)corannulene were calculated. The computations, performed with both the M06-2X/def2-TZVP and the B3LYP/def2-TZVP methods (the latter with and without Grimme's D3 dispersion correction), predict that this molecule can achieve two minimum structures: a flat carbon framework and a bowl-shaped structure, which are very close in energy. This rather unusual compound was easily synthesized from decachlorocorannulene under mild reaction conditions, and X-ray crystallographic studies gave similar results to the theoretical predictions. This compound crystallized in two different polymorphs, one exhibiting a completely flat corannulene core and the other having a bowl-shaped conformation.

Abstract
Monobromo-, tetrabromo-, and pentachloro-corannulene are subjected to nucleophilic substitution reactions with tolyl selenide and phenyl telluride-based nucleophiles generated in situ from the corresponding dichalcogenides. In the case of selenium nucleophile, the reaction provides moderate yields (52-77 %) of the targeted corannulene selenoethers. A subsequent oxidation of the selenium atoms proceeds smoothly to furnish corannulene selenones in 81-93 % yield. In the case of tellurides, only monosubstitution of the corannulene scaffold could be achieved albeit with concomitant oxidation of the tellerium atom. Unexpectedly, this monotelluroxide derivative of corannulene (RR'Te=O, R=Ph, R'=corannulene) is observed to form a linear coordination polymer chain in the crystalline state. In this chain, Te-O constitutes the polymer backbone around which the aromatic groups (R and R') arrange as polymer side-chains. The polymer crystal is stabilized through intramolecular π-π stacking interactions of the side-chains and intermolecular hydrogen and halogen bonding interactions with the solvent (chloroform) molecules. Interestingly, each diad of the polymer chain is racemic. Therefore, in terms of stereoregularity, the polymer chain can be described as syndiotactic.

Abstract
A new synthetic route to tetraindenopyrene (TIP)—a bowl‐shaped cut‐out structure of C70—is reported. The key step in this approach is a fourfold palladium‐catalyzed C−H activation that increases the yield more than 50 times in comparison to the approach originally described by Scott and co‐workers. Besides examination of its optoelectronic properties and study of its aggregation in solution, TIP was also re‐investigated by dispersion‐corrected DFT methods, which showed that dispersion interactions significantly increase the bowl‐to‐bowl inversion barrier. Furthermore, TIP was used as a semiconductor in p‐channel thin‐film transistors (TFTs).

Abstract
An octapodal corannulene-based supramolecular system has been prepared by introducing eight corannulene moieties in a porphyrin scaffold. Despite the potential of this double picket fence porphyrin for double-tweezer behavior, NMR titrations show exclusive formation of 1:1 adducts. The system exhibits very strong affinity for C60 and C70 (K1 = (2.71 ± 0.08) × 104 and (2.13 ± 0.1) × 105 M-1, respectively), presenting selectivity for the latter. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that, in addition to the four corannulene units, the relatively flexible porphyrin tether actively participates in the recognition process, resulting in a strong synergistic effect. This leads to a very strong interaction with C60, which in turn also induces a large structural change on the other face (second potential binding site), leading to a negative allosteric effect. We also introduced Zn2+ in the porphyrin core in an attempt to modulate its flexibility. The resulting metalloporphyrin also displayed single-tweezer behavior, albeit with slightly smaller binding constants for C60 and C70, suggesting that the effect of the coordination of fullerene to one face of our supramolecular platform was still transmitted to the other face, leading to the deactivation of the second potential binding site.

Abstract
A tetragold(I) rectangle-like metallocage containing two pyrene-bis-imidazolylidene ligands and two carbazolyl-bis-alkynyl linkers is used for the encapsulation of a series of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), including corannulene. The binding affinities obtained for the encapsulation of the planar PAHs guests in CD2 Cl2 are found to exponentially increase with the number of π-electrons of the guest (1.3 > logK >6.6). For the bowl-shaped molecule of corannulene, the association constant is much lower than the expected one according to its number of electrons. The molecular structure of the host-guest complex formed with corannulene shows that the molecule of the guest is compressed, while the host is expanded, thus showing an interesting case of artificial mutual induced-fit arrangement.

Abstract
It is shown in this work that high electron affinity can be combined with high solubility and practical accessibility in corannulene-based electron acceptors. The electron affinity originates from the presence of three different types of electron-withdrawing groups (imide, sulfone, and trifluoromethyl) on the aromatic scaffold. The imide substituent further hosts a long alkyl chain (C18 H37 ) to boast solubility in a wide range of organic solvents. The synthesis is modular and consists of three simple steps from a commonly available corannulene derivative with an overall isolated yield of 22-27 %.

Abstract
Modifications in the electronic transitions of a popular 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (boron dipyrromethene, BODIPY) dye caused by quasi-parallel stacking with corannulene (C) were studied by means of time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) with the CAM-B3LYP functional. The effects of the electron-withdrawing (CN) and electron-donating (NH2) substituents at the meso (8) position in the BODIPY core and the corannulene rim position on the character, location, and oscillator strengths (f) of some transitions of complexes were also discussed. To understand better the nature of the transitions, their occupied and virtual orbitals involved into the first electronic transitions as well as the electron density difference plots between excited and ground states of the complexes were investigated. The S0 → S1 transitions of 8H-B/C and 8NH2-B/C complexes have a small admixture of the charge transfer (CT) character in direction from BODIPY to corannulene (B → C). They located at 2.80 and 3.11 eV, respectively, and have f of ∼0.15. The 8CN-B/C complex with a stronger acceptor BODIPY part has the S0 → S1 transition with a higher degree of CT (B → C) at 2.32 eV with f = 0.08. The 8H-B/2NH2-C complex with a stronger donor corannulene part has the S0 → S1 transition with an expressed CT(B → C)-character at 2.58 eV with f = 0.003, whereas the S0 → S2 transition acquires in a some extent the features of the LE(B → B) character. A much interesting situation exists in the case of the 8NH2-B/2CN-C complex. Here we can find both CT (B → C) and CT (C → B) among the first five states. Besides this, different, higher in energy CT states and states delocalized on both molecules were observed.

Abstract
We report the use of a tetraborylated perylenediimide as starting material for the preparation of a tetracorannulene-perylenediimide that is able to bind up to two fullerene-C60 molecules by host-guest molecular recognition with preference over C70. Titration with fullerene-C60 is followed by a dramatic shift of the aromatic signals in 1H NMR and an initial increase in the fluorescence of the system. By this simple mechanism, fluorogenic sensing of fullerene-C60 is easily accomplished by an unprecedented fluorescent turn-on mechanism.

Abstract
The incorporation of eight pyrene units in a single porphyrin core exhibits a great synergistic effect, resulting in high affinity toward C60 and C70. This octapyrene porphyrin is easily accessible by a straightforward two-step synthetic approach that involves an octuple Suzuki reaction. The new supramolecular platform can present single- or double-tweezer fullerene hosting behavior. The switch from double- to single-tweezer behavior is triggered by the simple coordination of Zn2+ to the porphyrin. Both the octapyrene porphyrin 2HPOP and its zinc metalloporphyrin analogue ZnPOP show very high affinity for C60 and C70, while simultaneously allowing the discrimination of C70 over C60 in a C60/C70 mixture. The use of 2HPOP and ZnPOP for the enrichment of real fullerene mixtures is also demonstrated.

Abstract
Solution-phase synthesis of buckybowls remains a big challenge, and there are limited reports on the fragments of C70. Herein, we report a new basic subunit of C70 with C2v symmetry, the dicyclopenta[4,3,2,1- ghi:4',3',2',1'- pqr]perylene (2CP-Per). Its aryl-substituted derivative 2CP-Per-Ar was synthesized and shows a bowl-shaped geometry according to X-ray crystallographic analysis. A fast bowl-to-bowl inversion process was observed above 183 K by variable temperature nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), with a small inversion energy barrier. 2CP-Per-Ar displays amphoteric redox behavior with a small electrochemical energy gap (1.29 eV). Different from many other aromatic buckybowls, 2CP-Per exhibits global antiaromaticity with a strong paratropic ring current associated with the 16π-electrons rim, as revealed by NMR measurements and theoretic calculations. Its dianion is aromatic, similar to its isoelectronic structure coronene. Its dication is predicted to be aromatic, with a [6]annulene-within-[14]annulene structure.
