Ethanol-Induced Hydrogen Insertion in Ultrafine IrPdH Boosts pH-Universal Hydrogen Evolution

Nitrogen-Doped CoP-Co2P-Supported Ru with Interconnected Channels through a Microwave Quasi-Solid Approach for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction over a Wide pH Range

Transition-metal phosphides (TMPs) have attracted extensive attention in energy-related fields, especially for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, it is imperative to develop a facile and time-consuming approach to prepare metal phosphides with satisfactory catalytic performance. Herein, nitrogen-doped CoP-Co2P decorated with Ru (Ru/N-CoP-Co2P) is synthesized (Ru/N-CoP-Co2P) through a hydrothermal route and following an ultrafast and simple microwave avenue within 20 s. The achieved Ru/N-CoP-Co2P possesses an interconnected porous morphology to expose abundant active sites and accelerate the mass transport. Moreover, N doping and Ru-supported decorated Ru/N-CoP-Co2P also play a key role in promoting the electrocatalytic activity. Therefore, the as-designed Ru/N-CoP-Co2P presents good catalytic performance for the HER in a wide pH range. Ru/N-CoP-Co2P merely needs overpotentials of 63, 100, and 65 mV to obtain 10 mA cm-2 in acidic, alkaline, and seawater electrolytes. This research provides a novel and efficient strategy for the synthesis of TMPs with highly efficient catalytic activity.

Cyanogel-Induced Facile Synthesis of Palladium Hydride for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction

Palladium hydride (PdHx) is one of the well-known electrocatalytic materials, yet its synthesis is still a challenge through an energy-efficient and straightforward method. Herein, we propose a new and facile cyanogel-assisted synthesis strategy for the preparation of PdH0.649 at a mild environment with NaBH4 as the hydrogen source. Unlike traditional inorganic Pd precursors, the unique Pd-CN-Pd bridge in Pdx[Pd(CN)4]y ⋅ aH2O cyanogel offers more favourable spatial sites for insertion of H atoms. The characteristic three-dimensional backbone of cyanogel also acts as a support scaffold resulting in the interconnected network structure of PdH0.649. Due to the incorporation of H atoms and interconnected network structure, the PdH0.649 achieves a high half-wave potential of 0.932 V, a high onset potential of 1.062 V, and a low activation energy, as well as a long-term lifetime for oxygen reduction reaction. Theoretical calculation demonstrates a downshift of the d-band centre of Pd in PdH0.649 owing to the dominant Pd-H incorporation that weakens the binding energies of the *OH intermediate species. Zn-air batteries (ZAB) based on PdH0.649 exhibits high power density, competitive open circuit voltage, and good stability, exceeding that of commercial Pt black. This work not only opens up a new avenue for the development of high-efficiency Pt-free catalysts but also provides an original approach and insight into the synthesis of PdHx.

Compressive Strain in Platinum-Iridium-Nickel Zigzag-Like Nanowire Boosts Hydrogen Catalysis

Strain effect in the structurally defective materials can contribute to the catalysis optimization. However, it is challenging to achieve the performance improvement by strain modulation with the help of geometrical structure because strain is spatially dependent. Here, a new class of compressively strained platinum-iridium-metal zigzag-like nanowires (PtIrM ZNWs, M = nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn) and gallium (Ga)) is reported as the efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) catalysts. Particularly, the optimized PtIrNi ZNWs with 3% compressive strain (cs-PtIrNi ZNWs) can achieve the highest HER/HOR performances among all the catalysts investigate. Their HOR mass and specific activities are 3.2/14.4 and 2.6/32.7 times larger than those of PtIrNi NWs and commercial Pt/C, respectively. Simultaneously, they can exhibit the superior stability and high CO resistance for HOR. Further, experimental and theoretical studies collectively reveal that the compressive strain in cs-PtIrNi ZNWs effectively weakens the adsorption of hydroxyl intermediate and modulates the electronic structure, resulting in the weakened hydrogen binding energy (HBE) and moderate hydroxide binding energy (OHBE), beneficial for the improvement of HOR performance. This work highlights the importance of strain tuning in enhancing Pt-based nanomaterials for hydrogen catalysis and beyond.

Electrostatically induced Furfural-Derived carbon Dots-CdS hybrid for solar Light-Driven hydrogen production

Carbon dots (CDs) exhibit distinctive optical, electronic, and physicochemical properties, rendering them effective cocatalysts to enhance the photocatalytic performance of light-absorbing materials. The interplay between CDs and substrates is pivotal in manipulating photogenerated charge separation, transfer, and redistribution, significantly influencing overall photocatalytic efficiency. This study introduces a novel electrostatic interaction strategy to interface positively charged CdS nanorods (CdS NRs) with negatively charged furfural-derived CDs. The resulting optimized composite (25-CDs@CdS NRs), showcases photocatalytic hydrogen production at a rate of 1076 μmol g-1h-1. Experimental analyses and theoretical simulations offer insights into the structure-activity relationship, underscoring the crucial role of enhanced electrostatic interaction between CDs and CdS NRs in facilitating efficient charge transfer, activating reaction sites, and improving reaction kinetics. This research establishes an adaptable strategy for integrating CDs with metal-based semiconductors, opening new avenues for developing photocatalytic hybrid assemblies.

Metal-organic framework derived transition metal sulfides grown on carbon nanofibers as self-supported catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction

Metal-organic framework (MOF) derived transition metal-based electrocatalysts have received great attention as substitutes for noble metal-based hydrogen evolution catalysts. However, the low conductivity and easy detachments from electrodes of raw MOF have seriously hindered their applications in hydrogen evolution reaction. Herein, we report the facile preparation of Co-NSC@CBC84, a porous carbon-based and self-supported catalyst containing Co9S8 active species, by pyrolysis and sulfidation of in-situ grown ZIF-67 on polydopamine-modified biomass bacterial cellulose (PDA/BC). As a binder-free and self-supported electrocatalyst, Co-NSC@CBC84 exhibits superior electrocatalytic properties to other reported cobalt-based sulfide catalytic materials and has good stability in 0.5 M H2SO4 electrolyte. At the current density of 10 mA cm-2, only an overpotential of 138 mV was required, corresponding to a Tafel slope of 123 mV dec-1, owing to the strong synergy effect between Co-NSC nanoparticles and CBC substrate. This work therefore provides a feasible approach to prepare self-supported transition metal sulfides as HER catalysts, which is helpful for the development of noble metal-free catalysts and biomass carbon materials.

Low-loaded Ru on hollow SnO2 for enhanced electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

In response to the challenges of intermediate poisoning and the high cost of noble metal catalysts in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), we develop a Ru-doped SnO2 catalyst. This Ru-SnO2 catalyst has the characteristics of low Ru loading and a hollow structure, which endow it with good electrocatalytic activity and stability for the HER.

Hollow cubic ternary PdCuB nanocage electrocatalysts with greatly enhanced catalytic performance for formic acid oxidation

The prepared PdCuB Ngs/C catalysts exhibited outstanding catalytic activity and stability in the formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR). The improvement in electrocatalytic performance is due to the introduction of Cu and B atoms and the hollow nanocage structure, which changes the electronic structures of Pd, increases the reactive sites, and accelerates the reaction mass transfer rates.

Microwave Phosphine-Plasma-Assisted Ultrafast Synthesis of Halogen-Doped Ru/RuP2 with Surface Intermediate Adsorption Modulation for Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Anionic modification engineering is a crucial approach to develop highly efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction. Herein, halogen elements (X = Cl, Br, and I)-modified Ru-based nanosheets (X-Ru/RuP2 ) are designed by rapid and eco-friendly microwave-phosphide plasma approach within 60 s. Experimental and density functional theory calculations verify that the introduced halogen element, especially Br, can optimize the surface intermediates adsorption. Specially, the designed Br-Ru/RuP2 favors the water dissociation and following hydrogen adsorption/desorption process. Then, the as-synthesized Br-Ru/RuP2 exhibits low overpotential of 34 mV to reach 10 mA cm-2 coupled with small Tafel slope of 27 mV dec-1 in alkaline electrolyte with excellent long-term stability. Moreover, the electrocatalytic performances in acid and neutral media are also boosted via Br element modification. This work paves a novel way to regulate the electronic structure of Ru-based compounds, and then can boost the electrocatalytic kinetics.

Interface Engineering and Boron Modification of Pd-B/Pd Hetero-Metallene Synergistically Accelerate Oxygen Reduction Catalysis

2D metallene possess high surface area and excellent electron transport capability, thus enabling efficient application in oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the interface regulation and electronic structure optimization of metallene are still great challenges. Herein, Pd-B/Pd hetero-metallene is constructed by interface engineering and B modification strategies for efficient electrocatalytic ORR. The 2D configuration of Pd-B/Pd hetero-metallene exposes a large number of surface atoms and unsaturated defect sites, thus providing abundant catalytic active sites and exhibiting high electron mobility. More importantly, interface engineering and B modification synergistically optimizing the electronic configuration of the metallene system. This work not only provides an effective strategy for the rational regulation of the electronic configuration of metallene, but also offers a reference for the construction of efficient ORR catalysts.

Ternary Rare Earth Alloy Pt3-xIrxSc Nanoparticles Modulate Negatively Charged Pt via Charge Transfer To Facilitate pH-Universal Hydrogen Evolution

Rare earth (RE) elements possess electronic configurations that can provide additional pathways for tailoring the electronic structures of active elements through alloying, making it an important area of exploration in electrocatalysis. However, the large negative redox potential between RE and Pt has hindered the development of RE nanoalloys. In this study, a solid-phase synthesis strategy was employed to synthesize ternary Pt3-xIrxSc nanoparticles (NPs). By leveraging the electronegativity difference between Pt (2.28), Ir (2.20), and Sc (1.36), a charge-balance strategy was implemented to stabilize and enhance the catalytic performance of the alloy. The electron transfer from Sc to Pt/Ir results in the latter being negatively charged, and the Ir modifies the electron density of Pt, enabling favorable adsorption of active H species during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Pt2IrSc exhibits enhanced HER activity at all pH values, achieving low overpotentials at 10 mA cm-2 of only 13, 18, and 25 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4, 1 M PBS, and 1 M KOH, respectively. This electrocatalyst also exhibits robust electrocatalytic stability even after 20,000 cycles. This work represents an application of the charge balance strategy to RE nanoalloys, and it is expected to inspire the design and synthesis of highly reactive RE nanoalloys.

Recent advances of H-intercalated Pd-based nanocatalysts for electrocatalytic reactions

The intercalation of H into Pd-based nanocatalysts plays a crucial role in optimizing the catalytic performance by tailoring the structural and electronic properties. We herein present a comprehensive review about the recent progress of interstitial hydrogen atom modified Pd-based nanocatalysts for various energy-related electrocatalytic reactions. Before systematically manifesting the great potential of Pd-based hydrides for electrocatalytic applications, we have briefly illustrated the synthesis strategies and corresponding mechanisms for the Pd-based hydrides. This is followed by a comprehensive discussion about the fundamentals and functions of H intercalation in tailoring their physicochemical and electrochemical properties. Subsequently, we focus on the widespread application of Pd-based hydrides for electrocatalytic reactions, with the emphasis on the role of H intercalation played in determining electrocatalytic performance. Finally, the future direction and perspectives regarding the development of more efficient Pd-based hydrides are also manifested.

Bismuth Incorporation in Palladium Hydride for the Electrocatalytic Ethanol Oxidation with Enhanced CO Tolerance

Introducing nonmetal and oxophilic metal into palladium (Pd)-based catalysts is beneficial for boosting electrocatalysis, especially regarding the improvement of mass activity (MA) and CO tolerance. Herein, the stable bismuth-doped palladium hydride (Bi/PdH) networks have been successfully fabricated through a simple one-step method. The intercalation of interstitial H atoms expands the lattice of Pd, and the doping of oxophilic metal Bi restrains the adsorption of poisonous intermediates on the surface of Pd, thereby improving the activity and durability of the as-prepared catalysts in the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). The obtained Bi/PdH networks manifest a remarkable MA of 8.51 A·mgPd-1, which is 11.18 times higher than that of commercial Pd/C (0.76 A·mgPd-1). The CO-stripping analysis results indicate that Bi doping can significantly prohibit CO adsorption on the surface of the Bi/PdH networks. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations also reveal that Bi doping enhances the OH* adsorption on the catalyst surface and mitigates the interaction between Pd and CO* intermediates, providing deeper insights into the origin of the enhanced EOR activity and CO tolerance. This work describes an impactful path for producing high-performance and durable PdH-based nanocatalysts.

Oxygen-Bridged Stabilization of Single Atomic W on Rh Metallenes for Robust and Efficient pH-Universal Hydrogen Evolution

Highly efficient and durable electrocatalysts are of the utmost importance for the sustainable generation of clean hydrogen by water electrolysis. Here, we present a report of an atomically thin rhodium metallene incorporated with oxygen-bridged single atomic tungsten (Rh-O-W) as a high-performance electrocatalyst for pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction. The Rh-O-W metallene delivers ascendant electrocatalytic HER performance, characterized by exceptionally low overpotentials, ultrahigh mass activities, excellent turnover frequencies, and robust stability with negligible deactivation, in pH-universal electrolytes, outperforming that of benchmark Pt/C, Rh/C and numerous other reported precious-metal HER catalysts. Interestingly, the promoting feature of -O-W single atomic sites is understood via operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy characterization and theoretical calculations. On account of electron transfer and equilibration processes take place between the binary components of Rh-O-W metallenes, fine-tuning of the density of states and electron localization at Rh active sites is attained, hence promoting HER via a near-optimal hydrogen adsorption.

Defect-Rich PdIr Bimetallene Nanoribbons with Interatomic Charge Localization for Isopropanol-Assisted Seawater Splitting

Metallene with outstanding physicochemical properties is an efficient two-dimensional electrocatalysts for sustainable hydrogen (H₂ ) production applications. However, the controllable fabrication of extended atomically thin metallene nanoribbons remains a formidable challenge. Herein, this work proposes a controllable preparation strategy for atomically thin defect-rich PdIr bimetallene nanoribbons (PdIr BNRs) with a thickness of only 1.5 nm for the efficient and stable isopropanol-assisted seawater electrolytic H₂ production. When using PdIr BNRs as catalyst to build an isopropanol-assisted seawater electrolysis system, a voltage of only 0.38 V is required at @10 mA cm^-2 to achieve energy-saving H₂ production, while producing high value-added acetone at the anode. The aberration-corrected high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) clearly reveals that the PdIr BNRs possess abundant structural defects, which can additionally serve as highly catalytically active sites. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies reveal that the introduction of Ir atoms can induce the formation of a localized charge region and shift the d-band center of Pd down, thereby reducing the adsorption energy on the catalyst in favor of the rapid desorption of H₂ . This work opens the way for the controllable design and construction of defect-rich atomically thin metallene nanoribbons for efficient electrocatalytic applications.

Controlled synthesis of Crx-FeCo2P nanoarrays on nickel foam for overall urea splitting

Urea splitting is a highly promising technology for hydrogen production to cope with the fossil energy crisis, which requires the development of catalysts with high electrocatalytic activity. In this article, Cr_x-FeCo₂P/NF catalysts were synthesized by hydrothermal and low-temperature phosphorylation and used in the overall urea splitting process. Cr_0.15-FeCo₂P/NF and Cr_0.1-FeCo₂P/NF exhibited excellent urea oxidation reaction (UOR) activity (potential of 1.355 V at 100 mA cm^-2) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity (overpotential of 173 mV at 10 mA cm^-2) in 0.5 M urea solution containing 1 M KOH. In the assembled Cr_0.15-FeCo₂P/NF//Cr_0.1-FeCo₂P/NF electrolytic cell, only a small voltage of 1.50 V is needed to reach 10 mA cm^-2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation results demonstrate that an appropriate amount of Cr doping accelerates the kinetic performance of hydrogen production as well as improving the metallic properties of the electrode.

Cyanogel-Induced Synthesis of RuPd Alloy Networks for High-Efficiency Formic Acid Oxidation

For direct formic acid fuel cells (DFAFC), palladium (Pd)-based alloy catalysts with competitive morphology and elemental composition are essential to boost the performance of the formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR) in the anode zone. Herein, we design and synthesize RuPdx alloy nano-network structures (ANs) via the facile wet-chemical reduction of Pd-Ru cyanogel (Pdx [Ru(CN)6]y·aH2O) as an effective electrocatalyst for the FAOR. The formation of Pd-Ru cyanogel depends on the facile coordination of K2PdCl4 and K3 [Ru(CN)6]. The unique structure of cyanogel ensures the presentation of a three-dimensional mesoporous morphology and the homogeneity of the elemental components. The as-prepared RuPd3 ANs exhibit good electrocatalytic activity and stability for the FAOR. Notably, the RuPd3 ANs achieve a mass-specific activity of 2068.4 mA mg−1 in FAOR, which shows an improvement of approximately 16.9 times compared to Pd black. Such a competitive FAOR performance of RuPd3 ANs can be attributed to the advantages of structure and composition, which facilitate the exposure of more active sites, accelerate mass/electron transfer rates, and promote gas escape from the catalyst layer, as well as enhance chemical stability.
