Activation Strategies of Perovskite-Type Structure for Applications in Oxygen-Related Electrocatalysts

Design Principles and Mechanistic Understandings of Non-Noble-Metal Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Zinc-Air Batteries

Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are promising energy storage systems because of high theoretical energy density, safety, low cost, and abundance of zinc. However, the slow multi-step reaction of oxygen and heavy reliance on noble-metal catalysts hinder the practical applications of ZABs. Therefore, feasible and advanced non-noble-metal electrocatalysts for air cathodes need to be identified to promote the oxygen catalytic reaction. In this review, we initially introduced the advancement of ZABs in the past two decades and provided an overview of key developments in this field. Then, we discussed the working mechanism and the design of bifunctional electrocatalysts from the perspective of morphology design, crystal structure tuning, interface strategy, and atomic engineering. We also included theoretical studies, machine learning, and advanced characterization technologies to provide a comprehensive understanding of the structure-performance relationship of electrocatalysts and the reaction pathways of the oxygen redox reactions. Finally, we discussed the challenges and prospects related to designing advanced non-noble-metal bifunctional electrocatalysts for ZABs.

Solid-State Electrolytes and Electrode/Electrolyte Interfaces in Rechargeable Batteries

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) are considered to be one of the most promising candidates for next-generation energy storage systems due to the high safety, high energy density and wide operating temperature range of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) they use. Unfortunately, the practical application of SSEs has rarely been successful, which is largely attributed to the low chemical stability and ionic conductivity, ineluctable solid-solid interface issues including limited ion transport channels, high energy barriers, and poor interface contact. A comprehensive understanding of ion transport mechanisms of various SSEs, interactions between fillers and polymer matrixes and the role of the interface in SSBs are indispensable for rational design and performance optimization of novel electrolytes. The categories, research advances and ion transport mechanism of inorganic glass/ceramic electrolytes, polymer-based electrolytes and corresponding composite electrolytes are detailly summarized and discussed. Moreover, interface contact and compatibility between electrolyte and cathode/anode are also briefly discussed. Furthermore, the electrochemical characterization methods of SSEs used in different types of SSBs are also introduced. On this basis, the principles and prospects of novel SSEs and interface design are curtly proposed according to the development requirements of SSBs. Moreover, the advanced characterizations for real-time monitoring of interface changes are also brought forward to promote the development of SSBs.

Phosphorus-Modulated Generation of Defective Molybdenum Sites as Synergistic Active Centers for Durable Oxygen Evolution

It is well known that electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities primarily depend on the active centers of electrocatalysts. In some oxide electrocatalysts, high-valence metal sites (e.g., molybdenum oxide) are generally not the real active centers for electrocatalytic reactions, which is largely due to their undesired intermediate adsorption behaviors. As a proof-of-concept, molybdenum oxide catalysts are selected as a representative model, in which the intrinsic molybdenum sites are not the favorable active sites. Via phosphorus-modulated defective engineering, the inactive molybdenum sites can be regenerated as synergistic active centers for promoting OER. By virtue of comprehensive comparison , it is revealed that the OER performance of oxide catalysts is highly associated with the phosphorus sites and the molybdenum/oxygen defects. Specifically, the optimal catalyst delivers an overpotential of 287 mV to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm-2 , accompanied by only 2% performance decay for continuous operation up to 50 h. It is expected that this work sheds light on the enrichment of metal active sites via activating inert metal sites on oxide catalysts for boosting electrocatalytic properties.

Surface Reconstruction of Covellite CuS Nanocrystals for Enhanced OER Catalytic Performance in Alkaline Solution

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is one of the important half-reactions in energy conversion equipment such as water-spitting devices, rechargeable metal-air batteries, and so on. It is beneficial to develop efficient and low-cost catalysts that understand the reaction mechanism of OER and analyze the reconstruction phenomenon of transition metal sulfide. Interestingly, copper sulfide and cuprous sulfide with the same components possess different reconstruction behaviors due to their different metal ion valence states and different atomic arrangement modes. Because of a unique atomic arrangement sequence and certain cationic defects, the reconstruction phenomenon of CuS nanomaterials are that S2- is firstly oxidized to SO4 2- and then Cux + is converted into CuO via Cu(OH)2 . In addition, the specific "modified hourglass structure" of CuS with excellent conductivity is easier to produce intermediates. Compared with Cu2 S, CuS exhibits excellent OER activity with a lower overpotential of 192 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and remarkable electrochemical stability in 1.0 m KOH for 120 h. Herein, this study elucidates the reconstruction modes of CuS and Cu2 S in the OER process and reveals that CuS has a stronger CuS bond and a faster electronic transmission efficiency due to "modified hourglass structure," resulting in faster reconstruction of CuS than Cu2 S.

Controlling the Cation Exsolution of Perovskite to Customize Heterostructure Active Site for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Perovskite oxides are an important class of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts offering an ordered atomic arrangement and a highly flexible electronic structure. Currently, understanding and adjusting the dynamic reconstruction of perovskite during the OER process remains a formidable challenge. Here, we report the artificial construction of a heterostructure by the cation exsolution of perovskite to control the active site formation and reconstruction. The deliberately made La deficiency in LaNiO₃ perovskite facilitates the original segregation of NiO from the parent matrix and forms a well-defined interface between perovskite parent and NiO exsolution phase. The dynamic formation process of such heterojunction was studied by density functional theory computation and high quality imaging characterization. Due to the valence redistribution of Ni ions caused by the interfacial electron transfer, the in situ formed LaNiO₃/NiO heterostructure displays high electroactivity. Therefore, the LaNiO₃/NiO heterostructure exhibits a dynamic surface evolution feature with the generation of the highly active NiOOH layer under a low anodic potential (∼1.35 V vs RHE) during the OER process, which is very different from the conventional LaNiO₃ with a stoichiometry and NiO catalysts. With the newly formed heterostructure, the reconstructed catalysts impart a 4.5-fold increase in OER activity and a 3-fold improvement in stability against La and Ni dissolution during the OER process. This work provides a feasible interface engineering strategy for artificially controlling the reconstruction of the active phase in high-performance perovskite-based electrocatalytic materials.

Water electrolysis: from textbook knowledge to the latest scientific strategies and industrial developments

Replacing fossil fuels with energy sources and carriers that are sustainable, environmentally benign, and affordable is amongst the most pressing challenges for future socio-economic development. To that goal, hydrogen is presumed to be the most promising energy carrier. Electrocatalytic water splitting, if driven by green electricity, would provide hydrogen with minimal CO2 footprint. The viability of water electrolysis still hinges on the availability of durable earth-abundant electrocatalyst materials and the overall process efficiency. This review spans from the fundamentals of electrocatalytically initiated water splitting to the very latest scientific findings from university and institutional research, also covering specifications and special features of the current industrial processes and those processes currently being tested in large-scale applications. Recently developed strategies are described for the optimisation and discovery of active and durable materials for electrodes that ever-increasingly harness first-principles calculations and machine learning. In addition, a technoeconomic analysis of water electrolysis is included that allows an assessment of the extent to which a large-scale implementation of water splitting can help to combat climate change. This review article is intended to cross-pollinate and strengthen efforts from fundamental understanding to technical implementation and to improve the 'junctions' between the field's physical chemists, materials scientists and engineers, as well as stimulate much-needed exchange among these groups on challenges encountered in the different domains.
