Abstract
From 2000, our two research groups independently and simultaneously designed and developed a novel family of electrophilic fluorinating reagents based on the use of Cinchona alkaloids. The chiral N-fluoro ammonium salts demonstrated the highest efficiency compared to prior art in enantioselective electrophilic fluorination for a wide range of substrates. In this account, we tell our respective stories, how the same idea germinated in our laboratories, the characterization of the chiral reagents, the use in stoichiometric quantity then the development of a catalytic version, the application to the synthesis of chiral fluorinated molecules of pharmaceutical interest, and finally the exploitation of our reagents by other teams and for other applications.

Abstract
A protocol for the stereodivergent pentafluoroethylation of N-sulfinylimines using HFC-125 with KHMDS/triglyme has been developed. Both diastereomers of the pentafluoroethylated amines can be selectively synthesized based on the presence or absence of triglyme. This additive-controlled protocol allows the KHMDS/triglyme cryptate to be a straightforward and cheap alternative to previously reported base-controlled stereodivergent trifluoromethylation using potassium hexamethyldisilazide (KHMDS) versus P4-tBu.

Abstract
Hypervalent iodine catalyst-catalyzed nucleophilic fluorination of unsaturated amides using BF3·Et2O as the fluorine source and activating reagent was reported. Various 5-fluoro-2-oxazoline derivatives were synthesized in good to excellent yields (up to 95% isolated yield) within 10 min. The process was efficient and metal-free under mild conditions. A mechanism involving a fluorination/1,2-aryl migration/cyclization cascade was proposed on the basis of previous work and experimental results.

Abstract
Catalytic asymmetric synthesis has become an essential tool for the enantioselective synthesis of pharmaceuticals, natural products, and agrochemicals (mainly fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, and pheromones). With continuous growing interest in both modern agricultural chemistry and catalytic asymmetric synthesis chemistry, this review provides a comprehensive overview of some earlier reports as well as the recent successful applications of various catalytic asymmetric syntheses methodologies, such as enantioselective hydroformylation, enantioselective hydrogenation, asymmetric Sharpless epoxidation and dihydroxylation, asymmetric cyclopropanation or isomerization, organocatalyzed asymmetric synthesis, and so forth, which have been used as key steps in the preparation of chiral agrochemicals (on R&D, piloting, and commercial scales). Chiral agrochemicals can also lead the new generation of such chemicals having specific and novel modes of action for achieving sustainable crop protection and production. Some perspectives and challenges for these catalytic asymmetric methodologies in the synthesis of chiral agrochemicals are also briefly discussed in the final section of the manuscript. This review will provide the insight regarding understanding, development, and evaluation of catalytic asymmetric systems for the synthesis of chiral agrochemicals among the agrochemists.

Abstract
Controlling the sequence of the three consecutive reactive carbon centres of Cu-allenylidene remains a challenge. One of the impressive achievements in this area is the Cu-catalyzed annulation of 4-ethynyl benzoxazinanones, which are transformed into zwitterionic Cu-stabilized allenylidenes that are trapped by interceptors to provide the annulation products. In principle, the reaction proceeds via a preferential γ-attack, while annulation reactions via an α- or β-attack are infrequent. Herein, we describe a method for controlling the annulation mode, by the manipulation of a CF3 or CH3 substituent, to make it proceed via either a γ-attack or an α- or β-attack. The annulation of CF3-substituted substrates with sulfamate-imines furnished densely functionalized N-heterocycles with excellent enantioselectivity via a cascade of an internal β-attack and an external α-attack. CH3-variants were transformed into different heterocycles that possess a spiral skeleton, via a cascade of an internal β-attack and a hydride α-migration followed by a Diels-Alder reaction.

Abstract
An amino-controlled regiodivergent asymmetric synthesis of CF3-containing spiro-pyrrolidine-pyrazolone compounds is described. With alkaloid-derived squaramide as catalyst, the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of α,β-unsaturated pyrazolone with diethyl 2-((2,2,2-trifluoroethyl)imino) malonate offered adducts in excellent yields, dr, and ee. While the cyclohexanediamine-derived squaramide was employed, the reaction afforded a series of structure isomers through a switched umpolung reaction.

Abstract
An unprecedented 1,3-dipole cycloaddition between acyclic CF3-ketimines and N-benzyl azomethine ylide has been allowed by tungsten catalysis, furnishing a range of novel imidazolidines bearing a trifluoromethylated tetrasubstituted carbon center. This reaction appears as one of rare examples that challenging acyclic CF3-ketimines have been engaged in 1,3-cycloaddition reactions. The capability for gram-scale synthesis and variant derivatizations of cycloaddition adducts illustrates the synthetic potential of this approach. This protocol provides a facile access to a rapidly enlarging pool of motifs with a trifluoromethylated fully substituted carbon.

Abstract
An efficient and highly diastereoselective synthesis of CF3-dihydrobenzofurans by the reaction of in situ-generated CF3-oQMs in the presence of a base with sulphur ylides is put forward. The generality of the present developed method was well studied with diverse substrates to access the corresponding products in excellent yields. The highly reactive CF3-oQM has been utilized first time for the annulation reaction. The first [4 + 1] annulation reaction of in situ-generated highly electrophilic CF3-ortho-quinone methides with sulphur ylides has been put forth under mild reaction conditions to access CF3-dihydrobenzofurans.![]()

Abstract
Currently, more than 1,200 agrochemicals are listed and many of these are regularly used by farmers to generate the food supply to support the expanding global population. However, resistance to pesticides is an ever more frequently occurring phenomenon, and thus, a continuous supply of novel agrochemicals with high efficiency, selectivity, and low toxicity is required. Moreover, the demand for a more sustainable society, by reducing the risk chemicals pose to human health and by minimizing their environmental footprint, renders the development of novel agrochemicals an ever more challenging undertaking. In the last two decades, fluoro-chemicals have been associated with significant advances in the agrochemical development process. We herein analyze the contribution that organofluorine compounds make to the agrochemical industry. Our database covers 424 fluoro-agrochemicals and is subdivided into several categories including chemotypes, mode of action, heterocycles, and chirality. This in-depth analysis reveals the unique relationship between fluorine and agrochemicals.

Abstract
Acyl fluorides have recently gained a lot of attention as robust and versatile synthetic tools in synthetic chemistry. While several synthetic routes to acyl fluorides have been reported, a procedure involving direct insertion of the "fluoro-carbonyl" moiety using a single reagent has not yet been realized. Here we report the preparation of acyl fluorides by palladium-catalyzed fluoro-carbonylation of aryl, vinyl, and heteroaryl iodides using 2-(difluoromethoxy)-5-nitropyridine under CO-free conditions. 2-(difluoromethoxy)-5-nitropyridine is a stable, colorless solid that can be used as an alternative to the toxic gaseous formyl fluoride, which is commonly used under fluoride catalysis conditions. A wide variety of acyl fluorides are efficiently and safely obtained in high yield (up to 99%). A broad range of functional groups is tolerated under the optimized reaction conditions and the method can be applied to the late-stage fluoro-carbonylation of structurally complex Csp2-iodides, including bioactive derivatives, such as Fenofibrate, Isoxepac, and Tocopherol. Furthermore, the one-pot transformation of aryl-iodides, including drug-like molecules, into the corresponding amides by successive fluoro-carbonylation/amidation reactions, demonstrates the potential synthetic utility of this strategy.

Abstract
We disclose the Cu-catalyzed enantioselective synthesis of 3-methyl-3-propargyl-indolines, which contain a quaternary stereogenic carbon center, via the decarboxylative [4 + 1] annulation of 4-methyl-4-propargyl-benzoxazinanones with variety of sulfur ylides. The reaction proceeds predominantly through a γ-attack at the Cu-allenylidene intermediates by sulfur ylides to provide the corresponding indolines in good yield and high enantioselectivity (up to 91% ee). In contrast, the reaction of 4-trifluoromethyl-4-propargyl-benzoxazinanones with sulfur ylides delivers 3-trifluoromethyl-2-functionalized indoles in good to high yield via an unexpected α-attack at the Cu-allenylidene intermediates. Control over the α/γ-attack at the Cu-allenylidene intermediates by the same interceptors was achieved for the first time by the use of trifluoromethyl substituents.

Abstract
A general method for the construction of trifluoromethylated 2-quinolinones has been established herein by using a trifluoromethylative ring expansion of isatin with trifluorodiazoethane. The strategy provides a platform for the rapid synthesis of a wide range of substituted 3-hydroxy-4-trifluoromethyl-2-quinolinones. This operationally simple and robust Ag-catalyzed protocol successfully transforms isatin ketimines to 3-amino-4-trifluoromethylquinolinones in excellent yields. The utility of this novel method is further illustrated by the conversion of the products into various synthetically and medicinally relevant molecules.

Abstract
The enantioselective 5-exo-fluorocyclization of ene-oxime compounds was demonstrated under phase-transfer catalysis. Although deprotonative fluorinations competed, the chemical yields and the ee values of the desired isoxazoline products were generally moderate to good. The absolute stereochemistry of the major isomer was determined to be S by comparison with the literature after transformation of the product to the corresponding iodinated isoxazoline.

Abstract
The organo-catalyzed enantioselective benzylation reaction of α-trifluoromethoxy indanones afforded α-benzyl-α-trifluoromethoxy indanones with a tetrasubstituted stereogenic carbon center in excellent yield with moderate enantioselectivity (up to 57% ee). Cinchona alkaloid-based chiral phase transfer catalysts were found to be effective for this transformation, and both enantiomers of α-benzyl-α-trifluoromethoxy indanones were accessed, depended on the use of cinchonidine and cinchonine-derived catalyst. The method was extended to the enantioselective allylation reaction of α-trifluoromethoxy indanones to give the allylation products in moderate yield with good enantioselectivity (up to 76% ee).

Abstract
A micro-flow nucleophilic trifluoromethylation of carbonyl compounds using gaseous fluoroform was developed. This method also allows the first micro-flow transformation of N-sulfinylimines into trifluoromethyl amines with excellent diastereoselectivity. To demonstrate the synthetic utility of this micro-flow synthesis, the formal micro-flow synthesis of Efavirenz is described.

Abstract
Direct access to pharmaceutically attractive benzo-fused nine-membered heterocyclic alkenes 3 with a trifluoromethyl carbinol moiety was achieved via a palladium-catalyzed double-decarboxylative formal ring-expansion process from six-membered trifluoromethyl benzo[d][1,3]oxazinones 1 to nine-membered trifluoromethyl benzo[c][1,5]oxazonines 3 in the presence of vinylethylene carbonates 2. Generation of a Pd-π-allyl zwitterionic intermediate was proposed in the catalytic cycle. The trifluoromethyl group in the benzoxazinanones 1 plays an important role throughout the transformation. Diastereoselective chemical transformations of products 3 were also demonstrated.

Abstract
Conscious of the potential bioactivity of fluorine, an investigation was conducted using various fluorine-containing diaryliodonium salts in order to study and compare their biological activity against human lymphoma U937 cells. Most of the compounds tested are well-known reagents for fluoro-functionalized arylation reactions in synthetic organic chemistry, but their biological properties are not fully understood. Herein, after initially investigating 18 fluoro-functionalized reagents, we discovered that the ortho-fluoro-functionalized diaryliodonium salt reagents showed remarkable cytotoxicity in vitro. These results led us to synthesize more compounds, previously unknown sterically demanding diaryliodonium salts having a pentafluorosulfanyl (SF5) functional group at the ortho-position, that is, unsymmetrical ortho-SF5 phenylaryl-λ3-iodonium salts. Newly synthesized mesityl(2-(pentafluoro-λ6-sulfanyl)phenyl)iodonium exhibited the greatest potency in vitro against U937 cells. Evaluation of the cytotoxicity of selected phenylaryl-λ3-iodonium salts against AGLCL (a normal human B cell line) was also examined.

Abstract
The synthesis of pyrazole triflones containing a triflyl group at the 3-position is disclosed. Treatment of 2-diazo-1-phenyl-2-((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)ethan-1-one with nitroalkenes under basic conditions gave pharmaceutically attractive pyrazole 3-triflones in good to high yields. The generation of anionic triflyldiazomethane species followed by the [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction with nitroalkenes is proposed for this transformation. 3-(Difluoromethanesulfonyl)pyrazoles were also synthesized by using a previously unknown anionic (difluoromethanesulfonyl)diazomethane species under a similar strategy.
