The Frontier of Molecular Spintronics Based on Multiple-Decker Phthalocyaninato TbIIISingle-Molecule Magnets

Controlling the Spin States of FeTBrPP on Au(111)

Spin-flip excitations of iron porphyrin molecules on Au(111) are investigated with a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. The molecules adopt two distinct adsorption configurations on the surface that exhibit different magnetic anisotropy energies. Density functional theory calculations show that the different structures and excitation energies reflect unlike occupations of the Fe 3d levels. We demonstrate that the magnetic anisotropy energy can be controlled by changing the adsorption site, the orientation, or the tip-molecule distance.

Observation of Yu-Shiba-Rusinov States and Inelastic Tunneling Spectroscopy for Intramolecule Magnetic Exchange Interaction Energy of Terbium Phthalocyanine (TbPc) Species Adsorbed on Superconductor NbSe2

We investigated the spin properties of the terbium phthalocyanine (TbPc) species adsorbed on the superconductor NbSe2 surface using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. TbPc2 is a molecule in a class of single-molecule magnets (SMMs), and the use of superconductor electrodes attracts attention for the application to the devices using the spin degree of freedom. TbPc is a building block of TbPc2 and can reveal the spin component's behavior. In the experiment, TbPc species were placed on the surface of the superconductor NbSe2. We measured Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states caused by the interaction between the superconducting state and magnetic impurity and inelastic tunneling spectroscopy (IETS) for the spin excitation, below 1 K. We also measured the Kondo state formed by the magnetic singlet formation. We detected the radical spin at the ligand position of the TbPc by the presence of the Kondo peak and demonstrated that the radical spin forms the YSR feature. In addition, the exchange interaction energy (Eex) between the spins of the radical ligand (Pc) and the center 4f metal atom (Tb3+) is determined by using the IETS technique. Eex is a critical parameter that determines the blocking temperature, below which the sample behaves as an SMM. IETS results show that the statistical distribution of Eex has peaked at 1.3, 1.6, and 1.9 meV. The energy range is comparable to the recent theoretical calculation result. In addition, we show that the energy variation is correlated with the bonding configuration of TbPc.

Comparison between DySc2N@C80 and Dy2ScN@C80 single-molecule magnetic metallofullerenes encapsulated in single-wall carbon nanotubes

Encapsulation of a metallofullerene single-molecule magnet, Dy₂ScN@C₈₀, into single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) accelerates magnetic relaxation processes. In contrast, encapsulation of DySc₂N@C₈₀ suppresses them. The effects of the encapsulation are discussed in terms of intermolecular magnetic interactions and charge transfer among metallofullerenes and SWCNTs.

Rare-earth based tetrapyrrolic sandwiches: chemistry, materials and applications

This review summarises advances in chemistry of tetrapyrrole sandwiches with rare earth elements and highlights the current state of their use in single-molecule magnetism, organic field-effect transistors, conducting materials and nonlinear optics.

Actinide Coordination Chemistry on Surfaces: Synthesis, Manipulation, and Properties of Thorium Bis(porphyrinato) Complexes

Actinide-based metal-organic complexes and coordination architectures encompass intriguing properties and functionalities but are still largely unexplored on surfaces. We introduce the in situ synthesis of actinide tetrapyrrole complexes under ultrahigh-vacuum conditions, on both a metallic support and a 2D material. Specifically, exposure of a tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) multilayer to an elemental beam of thorium followed by a temperature-programmed reaction and desorption of surplus molecules yields bis(porphyrinato)thorium (Th(TPP)₂) assemblies on Ag(111) and hexagonal boron nitride/Cu(111). A multimethod characterization including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, temperature-programmed desorption, and complementary density functional theory modeling provides insights into conformational and electronic properties. Supramolecular assemblies of Th(TPP)₂ as well as individual double-deckers are addressed with submolecular precision, e.g., demonstrating the reversible rotation of the top porphyrin in Th(TPP)₂ by molecular manipulation. Our findings thus demonstrate prospects for actinide-based functional nanoarchitectures.

Tetrairon(II) extended metal atom chains as single-molecule magnets

Iron-based extended metal atom chains (EMACs) are potentially high-spin molecules with axial magnetic anisotropy and thus candidate single-molecule magnets (SMMs). We herein compare the tetrairon(ii), halide-capped complexes [Fe4(tpda)3Cl2] (1Cl) and [Fe4(tpda)3Br2] (1Br), obtained by reacting iron(ii) dihalides with [Fe2(Mes)4] and N2,N6-di(pyridin-2-yl)pyridine-2,6-diamine (H2tpda) in toluene, under strictly anhydrous and anaerobic conditions (HMes = mesitylene). Detailed structural, electrochemical and Mössbauer data are presented along with direct-current (DC) and alternating-current (AC) magnetic characterizations. DC measurements revealed similar static magnetic properties for the two derivatives, with χMT at room temperature above that for independent spin carriers, but much lower at low temperature. The electronic structure of the iron(ii) ions in each derivative was explored by ab initio (CASSCF-NEVPT2-SO) calculations, which showed that the main magnetic axis of all metals is directed close to the axis of the chain. The outer metals, Fe1 and Fe4, have an easy-axis magnetic anisotropy (D = -11 to -19 cm-1, |E/D| = 0.05-0.18), while the internal metals, Fe2 and Fe3, possess weaker hard-axis anisotropy (D = 8-10 cm-1, |E/D| = 0.06-0.21). These single-ion parameters were held constant in the fitting of DC magnetic data, which revealed ferromagnetic Fe1-Fe2 and Fe3-Fe4 interactions and antiferromagnetic Fe2-Fe3 coupling. The competition between super-exchange interactions and the large, noncollinear anisotropies at metal sites results in a weakly magnetic non-Kramers doublet ground state. This explains the SMM behavior displayed by both derivatives in the AC susceptibility data, with slow magnetic relaxation in 1Br being observable even in zero static field.

Magnetic Hysteresis at 10 K in Single Molecule Magnet Self-Assembled on Gold

Tremendous progress in the development of single molecule magnets (SMMs) raises the question of their device integration. On this route, understanding the properties of low-dimensional assemblies of SMMs, in particular in contact with electrodes, is a necessary but difficult step. Here, it is shown that fullerene SMM self-assembled on metal substrate from solution retains magnetic hysteresis up to 10 K. Fullerene-SMM DySc2N@C80 and Dy2ScN@C80 are derivatized to introduce a thioacetate group, which is used to graft SMMs on gold. Magnetic properties of grafted SMMs are studied by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and compared to the films of nonderivatized fullerenes prepared by sublimation. In self-assembled films, the magnetic moments of the Dy ions are preferentially aligned parallel to the surface, which is different from the disordered orientation of endohedral clusters in nonfunctionalized fullerenes. Whereas chemical derivatization reduces the blocking temperature of magnetization and narrows the hysteresis of Dy2ScN@C80, for DySc2N@C80 equally broad hysteresis is observed as in the fullerene multilayer. Magnetic bistability in the DySc2N@C80 grafted on gold is sustained up to 10 K. This study demonstrates that self-assembly of fullerene-SMM derivatives offers a facile solution-based procedure for the preparation of functional magnetic sub-monolayers with excellent SMM performance.

Lanthanide-Based Single-Molecule Magnets Derived from Schiff Base Ligands of Salicylaldehyde Derivatives

The breakthrough in Ln(III)-based SMMs with Schiff base ligands have been occurred for the last decade on account of their magnetic behavior, anisotropy and relaxation pathways. Herein, we review the synthetic strategy, from a structural point of view and magnetic properties of mono, di, tri and polynuclear Ln(III)-based single-molecule magnets mainly with Schiff bases of Salicylaldehyde origin. Special attention has been given to some important breakthroughs that are changing the perspective of this field with a special emphasis on slow magnetic relaxation. An overview of 50 Ln(III)-Schiff base complexes with SMM behavior, covering the period 2008–2020, which have been critical in understanding the magnetic interactions between the Ln(III)-centers, are presented and discussed in detail.

Seven-coordinate LnIII complexes assembled from a bulky MesacacH ligand: their synthesis, structure, photoluminescence and SMM behaviour

The reaction of a bulky acetyl acetone ligand 1,3-dimesitylpropane-1,3-dione (MesacacH) with hydrated lanthanide chlorides in the presence of tetramethylammonium hydroxide afforded a new family of neutral mononuclear LnIII complexes [Ln(Mesacac)3(DMF)] (Ln = Dy (1); Tb (2); Y0.91Dy0.09 (3); and Er (4)). The molecular structures of these complexes were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. The coordination geometries of the LnIII centre were analysed by SHAPE analysis which revealed a capped octahedral geometry in 1-4. Photoluminescence studies showed ligand-sensitized green emissions for 2 with an appreciable quantum yield of 0.83%. Static (dc) and dynamic (ac) magnetic studies of complexes 1 and 3 were performed. The dynamic magnetic study revealed that complex 1 exhibits zero-field slow relaxation of the magnetization without showing a clear maximum in the out-of-phase ac susceptibility plots. However, magnetic dilution of 1 with the YIII metal ion (complex 3) and/or the application of a dc magnetic field induces a strong frequency dependence of the ac susceptibility signals with χ''M peaks in the 3-10 K temperature range, thus supporting field-induced SMM behaviour of 1. The relaxation process takes place through a combination of the Orbach and Raman mechanisms. The fitting of the temperature dependence of the relaxation time to the equation τ-1 = τ0-1 exp(-Ueff/kBT) + BTn, allows the extraction of the effective energy barrier Ueff/kB = 70 K (48.7 cm-1) and pre-exponential parameter of τ0 = 2.7 × 10-7 s for the Orbach mechanism (first term) and the parameters B = 0.04 s-1 K-n and n = 6.11, for the Raman mechanism (second term).

Substrate-Independent Magnetic Bistability in Monolayers of the Single-Molecule Magnet Dy2 ScN@C80 on Metals and Insulators

Magnetic hysteresis is demonstrated for monolayers of the single-molecule magnet (SMM) Dy2 ScN@C80 deposited on Au(111), Ag(100), and MgO|Ag(100) surfaces by vacuum sublimation. The topography and electronic structure of Dy2 ScN@C80 adsorbed on Au(111) were studied by STM. X-ray magnetic CD studies show that the Dy2 ScN@C80 monolayers exhibit similarly broad magnetic hysteresis independent on the substrate used, but the orientation of the Dy2 ScN cluster depends strongly on the surface. DFT calculations show that the extent of the electronic interaction of the fullerene molecules with the surface is increasing dramatically from MgO to Au(111) and Ag(100). However, the charge redistribution at the fullerene-surface interface is fully absorbed by the carbon cage, leaving the state of the endohedral cluster intact. This Faraday cage effect of the fullerene preserves the magnetic bistability of fullerene-SMMs on conducting substrates and facilitates their application in molecular spintronics.

Manipulation of the Coordination Geometry along the C4 Rotation Axis in a Dinuclear Tb3+ Triple-Decker Complex via a Supramolecular Approach

A supramolecular complex (1⋅C₆₀ ) was prepared by assembling (C60-Ih)[5,6]fullerene (C₆₀ ) with the dinuclear Tb³⁺ triple-decker complex [(TPP)Tb(Pc)Tb(TPP)] (1: Tb³⁺ =trivalent terbium ion, Pc^2- =phthalocyaninato, TPP^2- =tetraphenylporphyrinato) with quasi-D_4h symmetry to investigate the relationship between the coordination symmetry and single-molecule magnet (SMM) properties. Tb³⁺ -Pc triple-decker complexes (Tb₂ Pc₃ ) have an important advantage over Tb³⁺ -Pc double-decker complexes (TbPc₂ ) since the magnetic relaxation processes correspond to the Zeeman splitting when there are two 4f spin systems. The two Tb³⁺ sites of 1 are equivalent, and the twist angle (φ) was determined to be 3.62°. On the other hand, the two Tb³⁺ sites of 1⋅C₆₀ are not equivalent. The φ values for sites Tb1 and Tb2 were determined to be 3.67° and 33.8°, respectively, due to a change in the coordination symmetry of 1 upon association with C₆₀ . At 1.8 K, 1 and 1⋅C₆₀ undergo different magnetic relaxations, and the changes in the ground state affect the spin dynamics. Although 1 and 1⋅C₆₀ relax via QTM in a zero applied magnetic field (H), H dependencies of the magnetic relaxation times (τ) for H>1500 Oe are similar. On the other hand, for H<1500 Oe, the τ values have different behaviors since the off-diagonal terms ( B k q ; q ≠ 0 ) affect the magnetic relaxation mechanism. From temperature (T) and H dependences of τ, spin-phonon interactions along with direct and Raman mechanisms explain the spin dynamics. We believe that a supramolecular method can be used to control the magnetic anisotropy along the C₄ rotation axis and the spin dynamic properties in dinuclear Ln³⁺ -Pc multiple-decker complexes.

The Origin of Magnetic Anisotropy and Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior in Chromium(II)-Based Extended Metal Atom Chains

Chromium(II)-based extended metal atom chains have been the focus of considerable discussion regarding their symmetric versus unsymmetric structure and magnetism. We have now investigated four complexes of this class, namely, [Cr₃(dpa)₄X₂] and [Cr₅(tpda)₄X₂] with X = Cl^- and SCN^- [Hdpa = dipyridin-2-yl-amine; H₂tpda = N²,N⁶-di(pyridin-2-yl)pyridine-2,6-diamine]. By dc/ac magnetic techniques and EPR spectroscopy, we found that all these complexes have easy-axis anisotropies of comparable magnitude in their S = 2 ground state (|D| = 1.5-1.8 cm^-1) and behave as single-molecule magnets at low T. Ligand-field and DFT/CASSCF calculations were used to explain the similar magnetic properties of tri- versus pentachromium(II) strings, in spite of their different geometrical preferences and electronic structure. For both X ligands, the ground structure is unsymmetric in the pentachromium(II) species (i.e., with an alternation of long and short Cr-Cr distances) but is symmetric in their shorter congeners. Analysis of the electronic structure using quasi-restricted molecular orbitals (QROs) showed that the four unpaired electrons in Cr₅ species are largely localized in four 3d-like QROs centered on the terminal, "isolated" Cr²⁺ ion. In Cr₃ complexes, they occupy four nonbonding combinations of 3d-like orbitals centered only on the two terminal metals. In both cases, then, QRO eigenvalues closely mirror the 3d-level pattern of the terminal ions, whose coordination environment remains quite similar irrespective of chain length. We conclude that the extent of unpaired-electron delocalization has little impact on the magnetic anisotropy of these wire-like molecular species.

Mononuclear lanthanide complexes assembled from a tridentate NNO donor ligand: design of a DyIII single-ion magnet

The reaction of a tridentate NNO donor ligand, 4-nitro-2-((2-(pyridine-2-yl)hydrazono)methyl)phenol (HL) with lanthanide(iii) nitrates in the presence of triethylamine afforded a new family of neutral mononuclear LnIII complexes [Ln(NO3)(L)2(HOCH3)] (Ln = Gd; (1) Tb; (2), Dy; (3), and Ho (4). The mononuclear complexes were structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies which revealed a spherical tricapped trigonal prism geometry with a pseudo D3h symmetry around the LnIII centre. Static (dc) and dynamic (ac) magnetic studies have been performed on these complexes. Field-induced single-ion magnet behaviour was observed in the DyIII analogue with an effective energy barrier and an pre-exponential factor of Δ/kB = 68(2) K and τ0 = 1.8 × 10-7 s, respectively.

On-surface structural and electronic properties of spontaneously formed Tb2Pc3 single molecule magnets

The single molecule magnet (SMM) bis(phthalocyaninato)terbium(iii) (TbPc2) has received significant and increasing attention as an exemplar system for realizing molecule-based spin electronics. Attaining higher nuclearity via multi-decker TbPc systems has remained an outstanding challenge, as known examples of Tb2Pc3 systems are only those containing Pc rings with substituents (e.g. alkyl, alkoxyl). Here we report on the spontaneous formation of Tb2Pc3 species from TbPc2 precursors via sublimation in ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) onto an Ag(111) surface. The presence of Tb2Pc3 molecules on the surface are inspected using scanning probe microscopy with submolecular resolution supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations and additional chemical analysis. We observe the selective presence of a Kondo resonance (30 K) in the Tb2Pc3 species, that we attribute to differences in the orientation of the internal molecular ligands. Formation of triple-decker complexes offers new possibilities to study and control magnetic interactions not accessible with standard TbPc2 molecules.

Observation of Cooperative Electronic Quantum Tunneling: Increasing Accessible Nuclear States in a Molecular Qudit

As an extension of two-level quantum bits (qubits), multilevel systems, so-called qu dits, where d represents the Hilbert space dimension, have been predicted to reduce the number of iterations in quantum-computation algorithms. This has been tested in the well-known [TbPc₂]⁰ single-molecule magnet (SMM), which allowed implementation of the Grover algorithm in a single molecular unit. In the quest for molecular systems possessing an increased number of accessible nuclear spin states, we explore herein a dimeric Tb₂-SMM via single-crystal μ-SQUID measurements at sub-Kelvin temperatures. We observe ferromagnetic interactions between the Tb^III ions and cooperative quantum tunneling of the electronic spins with spin ground state | J _z = ±6⟩. Strong hyperfine coupling with the Tb^III nuclear spins leads to a multitude of spin-reversal paths, leading to seven strong hyperfine-driven tunneling steps in the hysteresis loops. Our results show the possibility of reading out the Tb^III nuclear spin states via cooperative tunneling of the electronic spins, making the dimeric Tb₂-SMM an excellent nuclear spin qu dit candidate with d = 16.

Fabricating Bis(phthalocyaninato) Terbium SIM into Tetrakis(phthalocyaninato) Terbium SMM with Enhanced Performance through Sodium Coordination

The non-peripherally substituted 1,4,8,11,15,18,22,25-octa(butoxy)-phthalocyanine-involved unsymmetrical heteroleptic bis(phthalocyaninato) terbium double-decker, Tb(Pc){H[Pc(α-OC₄ H₉ )₈ ]} (Pc=unsubstituted phthalocyanine) (1), was revealed to exhibit typical single ion magnet (SIM) behavior with effective energy barrier, 180 K (125 cm^-1 ), and blocking temperature, 2 K, due to the severe deviation of the terbium coordination polyhedron from square-antiprismatic geometry. Fabrication of this double-decker compound into the novel tetrakis(phthalocyaninato) terbium pseudo-quadruple-decker Na₂ {Tb(Pc)[Pc(α-OC₄ H₉ )₈ ]}₂ (2) single molecule magnet (SMM) not only optimizes the coordination polyhedron of terbium ion towards the square-antiprismatic geometry and intensifies the coordination field strength, but more importantly significantly enhances the molecular magnetic anisotropy in the unsymmetrical bis(phthalocyaninato) double-decker unit, along with the change of the counter cation from H⁺ of 1 to Na⁺ of 2, leading to an significantly enhanced magnetic behavior with spin-reversal energy barrier, 528 K (367 cm^-1 ), and blocking temperature, 25 K. The present result is surely helpful towards developing novel tetrapyrrole lanthanide SMMs through rational design and self-assembly from bis(tetrapyrrole) lanthanide single ion magnet (SIM) building block.

Elucidation of Dual Magnetic Relaxation Processes in Dinuclear Dysprosium(III) Phthalocyaninato Triple-Decker Single-Molecule Magnets Depending on the Octacoordination Geometry

When applying single-molecule magnets (SMMs) to spintronic devices, control of the quantum tunneling of the magnetization (QTM) as well as a spin-lattice interactions are important. Attempts have been made to use not only coordination geometry but also magnetic interactions between SMMs as an exchange bias. In this manuscript, dinuclear dysprosium(III) (Dy^III ) SMMs with the same octacoordination geometry undergo dual magnetic relaxation processes at low temperature. In the dinuclear Dy^III phthalocyaninato (Pc^2- ) triple-decker type complex [(Pc)Dy(ooPc)Dy(Pc)] (1) (ooPc^2- =2,3,9,10,16,17,23,24-octakis(octyloxy)phthalocyaninato) with a square-antiprismatic (SAP) geometry, the ground state is divided by the Zeeman effect, and level intersection occurs when a magnetic field is applied. Due to the ground state properties of 1, since the Zeeman diagram where the levels intersect in an H_dc of 2500 Oe, two kinds of QTM and direct processes occur. However, dinuclear Dy^III -Pc systems with C₄ geometry, which have a twist angle (ϕ) of less than 45° do not undergo dual magnetic relaxation processes. From magnetic field and temperature dependences, the dual magnetic relaxation processes were clarified.

Synthesis and magnetochemistry of heterometallic triangular FeLnIII (Ln = La, Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho) and FeYIII complexes

A series of Fe₂Ln (Ln = La, Gd, Tb, Dy and Ho) and Fe₂Y complexes have been synthesized via metal substitution and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. All the molecules are isostructural and have a Fe₂LnO triangular core with the oxygen atom existing as an μ₃-oxo^2- anion. DC and AC magnetic susceptibility studies were performed on all the molecules. For Fe₂Ln (Ln = Gd, La) and Fe₂Y, the data were fitted to Van Vleck equations and the magnetic coupling constants were obtained. In all cases, the two Fe(iii) spins were found to be antiparallel to each other in the ground state leaving the heterometal to remain essentially uncoupled.

Microwave-Mediated Synthesis of Bulky Lanthanide Porphyrin-Phthalocyanine Triple-Deckers: Electrochemical and Magnetic Properties

Five heteroleptic lanthanide porphyrin-bis-phthalocyanine triple-decker complexes with bulky peripheral groups were prepared via microwave-assisted synthesis and characterized in terms of their spectroscopic, electrochemical, and magnetic properties. These compounds, which were easily obtained under our preparative conditions, would normally not be accessible in large quantities using conventional synthetic methods, as a result of the low yield resulting from steric congestion of bulky groups on the periphery of the phthalocyanine and porphyrin ligands. The electrochemically investigated triple-decker derivatives undergo four reversible one-electron oxidations and three reversible one-electron reductions. The sites of oxidation and reduction were assigned on the basis of redox potentials and UV-vis spectral changes during electron-transfer processes monitored by thin-layer spectroelectrochemistry, in conjunction with assignments of electronic absorption bands of the neutral compounds. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on two derivatives containing Tb^III and Dy^III metal ions reveal the presence of ferromagnetic interactions, probably resulting from magnetic dipolar interactions. The Tb^III derivative shows SMM behavior under an applied field of 0.1 T, where the direct and Orbach process can be determined, resulting in an energy barrier of U_eff = 132.0 K. However, Cole-Cole plots reveal the presence of two relaxation processes, the second of which takes place at higher frequencies, with the data conforming to a 1/t ∝ T⁷ relation, thus suggesting that it can be assigned to a Raman process. Attempts were made to form two-dimensional (2D) self-assembled networks on a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) surface but were unsuccessful due to bulky peripheral groups on the two Pc macrocycles.

Immobilization of alkynyl functionalized manganese phthalocyanine via click electrochemistry for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction

Modified electrodes (ITO/PANI-N₃-MnPc and GCE/PANI-N₃-MnPc) were constructed by click electrochemistry (CEC). The GCE/PANI-N₃-MnPc electrode was tested as a potential electrocatalyst for water splitting reaction.
