Crystalline, Highly Oriented MOF Thin Film: the Fabrication and Application

Large-Area Conductive MOF Ultrathin Film Controllably Integrating Dinuclear-Metal Sites and Photosensitizers to Boost Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction with H2O as an Electron Donor

Owing to the electrical conductivity and periodic porosity, conductive metal-organic framework (cMOF) ultrathin films open new perspectives to photocatalysis. The space-selective assembly of catalytic sites and photosensitizers in/on cMOF is favorable for promoting the separation of photogenerated carriers and mass transfer. However, the controllable integration of functional units into the cMOF film is rarely reported. Herein, via the synergistic effect of steric hindrance and an electrostatic-driven strategy, the dinuclear-metal molecular catalysts (DMC) and perovskite (PVK) quantum dot photosensitizers were immobilized into channels and onto the surface of cMOF ultrathin films, respectively, affording [DMC@cMOF]-PVK film photocatalysts. In this unique heterostructure, cMOF not only facilitated the charge transfer from PVK to DMC but also guaranteed mass transfer. Using H2O as an electron donor, [DMC@cMOF]-PVK realized a 133.36 μmol·g-1·h-1 CO yield in photocatalytic CO2 reduction, much higher than PVK and DMC-PVK. Owing to the excellent light transmission of films, multilayers of [DMC@cMOF]-PVK were integrated to increase the CO yield per unit area, and the 10-layer device realized a 1115.92 μmol·m-2 CO yield in 4 h, which was 8-fold higher than that of powder counterpart. This work not only lightens the development of cMOF-based composite films but also paves a novel avenue for an ultrathin film photocatalyst.

Generic Air-Gen Effect in Nanoporous Materials for Sustainable Energy Harvesting from Air Humidity

Air humidity is a vast, sustainable reservoir of energy that, unlike solar and wind, is continuously available. However, previously described technologies for harvesting energy from air humidity are either not continuous or require unique material synthesis or processing, which has stymied scalability and broad deployment. Here, a generic effect for continuous energy harvesting from air humidity is reported, which can be applied to a broad range of inorganic, organic, and biological materials. The common feature of these materials is that they are engineered with appropriate nanopores to allow air water to pass through and undergo dynamic adsorption-desorption exchange at the porous interface, resulting in surface charging. The top exposed interface experiences this dynamic interaction more than the bottom sealed interface in a thin-film device structure, yielding a spontaneous and sustained charging gradient for continuous electric output. Analyses of material properties and electric outputs lead to a "leaky capacitor" model that can describe how electricity is harvested and predict current behaviors consistent with experiments. Predictions from the model guide the fabrication of devices made from heterogeneous junctions of different materials to further expand the device category. The work opens a wide door for the broad exploration of sustainable electricity from air.

Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Derivatives-Based Nanostructure with Different Dimensionalities for Supercapacitors

With the urgent demand for the achievement of carbon neutrality, novel nanomaterials, and environmentally friendly nanotechnologies are constantly being explored and continue to drive the sustainable development of energy storage and conversion installations. Among various candidate materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives with unique nanostructures have attracted increasing attention and intensive investigation for the construction of next generation electrode materials, benefitting from their unique intrinsic characteristics such as large specific surface area, high porosity, and chemical tunability as well as the interconnected channels. Nevertheless, the poor electrochemical conductivity severely limits their application prospects, hence a variety of nanocomposites with multifarious structures have been designed and proposed from different dimensionalities. In this review, recent advances based on MOFs and their derivatives in different dimensionalities ranging from 1D nanopowders to 2D nanofilms and 3D aerogels, as well as 4D self-supporting electrodes for supercapacitors are summarized and highlighted. Furthermore, the key challenges and perspectives of MOFs and their derivatives-based materials for the practical and sustainable electrochemical energy conversion and storage applications are also briefly discussed, which may be served as a guideline for the design of next-generation electrode materials from different dimensionalities.

Porous crystalline materials for memories and neuromorphic computing systems

Porous crystalline materials usually include metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) and zeolites, which exhibit exceptional porosity and structural/composition designability, promoting the increasing attention in memory and neuromorphic computing systems in the last decade. From both the perspective of materials and devices, it is crucial to provide a comprehensive and timely summary of the applications of porous crystalline materials in memory and neuromorphic computing systems to guide future research endeavors. Moreover, the utilization of porous crystalline materials in electronics necessitates a shift from powder synthesis to high-quality film preparation to ensure high device performance. This review highlights the strategies for preparing porous crystalline materials films and discusses their advancements in memory and neuromorphic electronics. It also provides a detailed comparative analysis and presents the existing challenges and future research directions, which can attract the experts from various fields (e.g., materials scientists, chemists, and engineers) with the aim of promoting the applications of porous crystalline materials in memory and neuromorphic computing systems.

Self-assembled BiFeO3@MIL-101 nanocomposite for antimicrobial applications under natural sunlight

In this paper, we report on the synthesis of a new hybrid photocatalytic material activated by natural sunlight irradiation. The material consists of multiferroic nanoparticles of bismuth ferrite (BFO) modified through the growth of the Fe-based MIL-101 framework. Material characterization, conducted using various techniques (X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, FTIR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies), confirmed the growth of the MIL-101 metal-organic framework on the BFO surface. The obtained system possesses the intrinsic photo-degradative properties of BFO nanoparticles significantly enhanced by the presence of MIL-101. The photocatalytic activity of this material was tested in antibacterial experiments conducted under natural sunlight exposure within the nanocomposite concentration range of 100-0.20 µg/ml. The MIL-modified BFO showed a significant decrease in both Minimum Inhibiting Concentration and Minimum Bactericide Concentration values compared to bare nanoparticles. This confirms the photo-activating effect of the MIL-101 modification. In particular, they show an increased antimicrobial activity against the tested Gram-positive species and the ability to begin to inhibit the growth of the four Escherichia coli strains, although at the maximum concentration tested. These results suggest that the new nanocomposite BiFeO3@MOF has been successfully developed and has proven to be an effective antibacterial agent against a wide range of microorganisms and a potential candidate in disinfection processes.

Synthesis of Bioactive Yttrium-Metal-Organic Framework as Efficient Nanocatalyst in Synthesis of Novel Pyrazolopyranopyrimidine Derivatives and Evaluation of Anticancer Activity

Novel Yttrium-metal-organic framework (Y-MOF) was synthesized under optimal conditions of microwave with a power of 20 W, the temperature of 30 degrees of centigrade, and time duration of 10 min. The products were characterized by SEM (morphology and size distribution), TGA (thermal stability), BET technique (surface area), and FTIR (characterization of the related group). The Yttrium-metal-organic framework (Y-MOF) synthesized in this study, after identifying and confirming the structure, was used as an efficient and recyclable catalyst in the synthesis of new pyrazolopyranopyrimidine derivatives. Following the study of the properties and applications of Y-MOF, its anticancer properties on breast cancer cells based on the MTT method were evaluated, and significant results were observed. In addition, the anticancer properties of the pyrazolopyranopyrimidine derivatives were investigated.

The Growth of Metal–Organic Frameworks in the Presence of Graphene Oxide: A Mini Review

Integrated metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with graphene oxide (GO) have aroused huge interest in recent years due to their unique properties and excellent performance compared to MOFs or GO alone. While a lot of attention has been focused on the synthesis methodologies and the performance analysis of the composite materials in recent years, the fundamental formation/crystallization mechanism(s) is (are) still not fully understood. Ascribed to the distinctive structural and functional properties of GO, the nucleation and crystallization process of MOFs could be altered/promoted, forming MOF/GO composite materials with different nanostructures. Furthermore, the MOF’s parental structure could also influence how the GO and MOF bond together. Thus, this short review attempted to provide critical and indepth discussions of recent research results with a particular focus on the factors that influence the directional growth of parent MOFs in the presence of graphene oxide. Due to the unique structure and enhanced properties, the derived MOF/GO composites have a wide range of applications including gas separation, electrochemistry, and photocatalysis. We hope this review will be of interest to researchers working on MOF design, crystal structure control (e.g., orientation), and composite materials development.

Synthesis of MIL-Modified Fe3O4 Magnetic Nanoparticles for Enhancing Uptake and Efficiency of Temozolomide in Glioblastoma Treatment

A nanometric hybrid system consisting of a Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles modified through the growth of Fe-based Metal-organic frameworks of the MIL (Materials Institute Lavoiser) was developed. The obtained system retains both the nanometer dimensions and the magnetic properties of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles and possesses increased the loading capability due to the highly porous Fe-MIL. It was tested to load, carry and release temozolomide (TMZ) for the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme one of the most aggressive and deadly human cancers. The chemical characterization of the hybrid system was performed through various complementary techniques: X-ray-diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, FT-IR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. The nanomaterial showed low toxicity and an increased adsorption capacity compared to bare Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). It can load about 12 mg/g of TMZ and carry the drug into A172 cells without degradation. Our experimental data confirm that, after 48 h of treatment, the TMZ-loaded hybrid nanoparticles (15 and 20 μg/mL) suppressed human glioblastoma cell viability much more effectively than the free drug. Finally, we found that the internalization of the MIL-modified system is more evident than bare MNPs at all the used concentrations both in the cytoplasm and in the nucleus suggesting that it can be capable of overcoming the blood-brain barrier and targeting brain tumors. In conclusion, these results indicate that this combined nanoparticle represents a highly promising drug delivery system for TMZ targeting into cancer cells.

Synthesis and Mechanical Properties of sub 5-µm PolyUiO-66 Thin Films on Gold Surfaces

Metal-organic framework (MOF) thin films currently lack the mechanical stability needed for electronic device applications. Polymer-based metal-organic frameworks (polyMOFs) have been suggested to provide mechanical advantages over MOFs, however, the mechanical properties of polyMOFs have not yet been characterized. In this work, we developed a method to synthesize continuous sub-5 µm polyUiO-66(Zr) films on Au substrates, which allowed us to undertake initial mechanical property investigations.  Comparisons between polyUiO-66 and UiO-66 thin films determined polyUiO-66 thin films exhibit a lower modulus but similar hardness to UiO-66 thin films. The initial mechanical characterization indicates that further development is needed to leverage the mechanical property advantages of polyMOFs over MOFs. Additionally, the demonstration in this work of a continuous surface-supported polyUiO-66 thin film also enables utilization of the emerging class of polyMOF materials in sensors and devices applications.

Infrared crystallography for framework and linker orientation in metal-organic framework films

Pore alignment and linker orientation influence diffusion and guest molecule interactions in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and play a pivotal role for successful utilization of MOFs. The crystallographic orientation and the degree of orientation of MOF films are generally determined using X-ray diffraction. However, diffraction methods reach their limit when it comes to very thin films, identification of chemical connectivity or the orientation of organic functional groups in MOFs. Cu-based 2D MOF and 3D MOF films prepared via layer-by-layer method and from aligned Cu(OH)2 substrates were studied with polarization-dependent Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy in transmission and attenuated total reflection configuration. Thereby, the degrees for in-plane and out-of-plane orientation, the aromatic linker orientation and the initial alignment during layer-by-layer MOF growth, which is impossible to investigate by laboratory XRD equipment, was determined. Experimental IR spectra correlate with theoretical explanations, paving the way to expand the principle of IR crystallography to oriented, organic-inorganic hybrid films beyond MOFs.

Growth of ZIF-8 MOF Films with Tunable Porosity by using Poly (1-vinylimidazole) Brushes as 3D Primers

This work reports on a novel and versatile approach to control the structure of metal-organic framework (MOFs) films by using polymeric brushes as 3D primers, suitable for triggering heterogeneous MOF nucleation. As a proof-of-concept, this work explores the use of poly(1-vinylimidazole) brushes primer obtained via surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) for the synthesis of Zn-based ZIF-8 MOF films. By modifying the grafting density of the brushes, smooth porous films were obtained featuring inherently hydrophobic microporosity arising from ZIF-8 structure, and an additional constructional interparticle mesoporosity, which can be employed for differential adsorption of targeted adsorbates. It was found that the grafting density modulates the constructional porosity of the films obtained; higher grafting densities result in more compact structures, while lower grafting density generates increasingly inhomogeneous films with a higher proportion of interparticle constructional porosity.

Metal-Organic Framework for Transparent Electronics

Electronics allowing for visible light to pass through are attractive, where a key challenge is to make the core functional units transparent. Here, it is shown that transparent electronics can be constructed by epitaxial growth of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) on single-layer graphene (SLG) to give a desirable transparency of 95.7% to 550 nm visible light and an electrical conductivity of 4.0 × 104 S m-1. Through lattice and symmetry match, collective alignment of MOF pores and dense packing of MOFs vertically on SLG are achieved, as directly visualized by electron microscopy. These MOF-on-SLG constructs are capable of room-temperature recognition of gas molecules at the ppb level with a linear range from 10 to 108 ppb, providing real-time gas monitoring function in transparent electronics. The corresponding devices can be fabricated on flexible substrates with large size, 3 × 5 cm, and afford continuous folding for more than 200 times without losing conductivity or transparency.

The Growth of Photoactive Porphyrin-Based MOF Thin Films Using the Liquid-Phase Epitaxy Approach and their Optoelectronic Properties

This study reports on the optoelectronic properties of porphyrin-based metal–organic framework (MOF) thin films fabricated by a facile liquid-phase epitaxy approach. This approach affords the growth of MOF thin films that are free of morphological imperfections, more suitable for optoelectronic applications. Chemical modifications such as the porphyrin ligand metallation have been found to preserve the morphology of the grown films making this approach particularly suitable for molecular alteration of MOF thin film optoelectronic properties without compromising its mesoscale morphology significantly. Particularly, the metallation of the ligand was found to be effective to tune the MOF bandgap. These porphyrin-based MOF thin films were shown to function effectively as donor layers in solar cells based on a Fullerene-C₆₀ acceptor. The ability to fabricate MOF solar cells free of a liquid-phase acceptor greatly simplifies device fabrication and enables pairing of MOFs as light absorbers with a wide range of acceptors including non-fullerene acceptors.

Fabrication of [Cu2(bdc)2(bpy)]n thin films using coordination modulation-assisted layer-by-layer growth

We take the advantage of the layer-by-layer process to adapt it to the coordination modulation method to fabricate highly oriented [Cu₂(bdc)₂(bpy)]_n films.

The Tuning of Optical Properties of Nanoscale MOFs-Based Thin Film through Post-Modification

Optical properties, which determine the application of optical devices in different fields, are the most significant properties of optical thin films. In recent years, Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based optical thin films have attracted increasing attention because of their novel optical properties and important potential applications in optical and photoelectric devices, especially optical thin films with tunable optical properties. This study reports the first example of tuning the optical properties of a MOF-based optical thin film via post-modification. The MOF-based optical thin film was composed of NH₂-MIL-53(Al) nanorods (NRs) (MIL: Materials from Institute Lavoisier), and was constructed via a spin-coating method. Three aldehydes with different lengths of carbon chains were chosen to modify the MOF optical thin film to tune their optical properties. After post-modification, the structural color of the NH₂-MIL-53(Al) thin film showed an obvious change from purple to bluish violet and cyan. The reflection spectrum and the reflectivity also altered in different degrees. The effective refractive index (n_eff) of MOFs thin film can also be tuned from 1.292 to 1.424 at a wavelength of 750 nm. The success of tuning of the optical properties of MOFs thin films through post-modification will make MOFs optical thin films meet different needs of optical properties in various optical and optoelectronic devices.
