Understanding Cooperativity in Homo- and Heterometallic Complexes: From Basic Concepts to Design

Cooperative effects have attracted considerable attention in recent years. These effects are ubiquitous in chemistry and biology and can govern interactions of proteins with other biomolecules, mechanisms of supramolecular recognition and polymerization, catalysis, assembly of compounds on surfaces, and physical properties such as magnetic, electronic or optical properties, e. g. Consequently, the understanding of cooperative effects can lead to a structure-property relation that can pave the way to future applications in various research areas; however, with regard to cooperative effects in homo- and heterometallic complexes, we still are at the beginning of understanding. Nevertheless, concepts to describe cooperativity of metal centers as well as methodologies to investigate and model these effects have emerged over the last years. This concept article gives an overview of these existing concepts, approaches, and strategies to understand cooperative effects in homo- and heterometallic complexes. Special emphasis is put on concepts to define cooperative effects, their quantification, as well as methods to investigate cooperative effects.

Impact of Bidentate Pyridyl-Mesoionic Carbene Ligands: Structural, (Spectro)Electrochemical, Photophysical, and Theoretical Investigations on Ruthenium(II) Complexes

We present here new synthetic strategies for the isolation of a series of Ru(II) complexes with pyridyl-mesoionic carbene ligands (MIC) of the 1,2,3-triazole-5-ylidene type, in which the bpy ligands (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) of the archetypical [Ru(bpy)3]2+ have been successively replaced by one, two, or three pyridyl-MIC ligands. Three new complexes have been isolated and investigated via NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The incorporation of one MIC unit shifts the potential of the metal-centered oxidation about 160 mV to more cathodic potential in cyclic voltammetry, demonstrating the extraordinary σ-donor ability of the pyridyl-MIC ligand, while the π-acceptor capacities are dominated by the bpy ligand, as indicated by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroelectrochemistry (EPR-SEC). The replacement of all bpy ligands by the pyridyl-MIC ligand results in an anoidic shift of the ligand-centered reduction by 390 mV compared to the well-established [Ru(bpy)3]2+ complex. In addition, UV/vis/NIR-SEC in combination with theoretical calculations provided detailed insights into the electronic structures of the respective redox states, taking into account the total number of pyridyl-MIC ligands incorporated in the Ru(II) complexes. The luminescence quantum yield and lifetimes were determined by time-resolved absorption and emission spectroscopy. An estimation of the excited state redox potentials conclusively showed that the pyridyl-MIC ligand can tune the photoredox activity of the isolated complexes to stronger photoreductants. These observations can provide new strategies for the design of photocatalysts and photosensitizers based on MICs.

Synthesis, characterisation and biological evaluation of monometallic Re(I) and heterobimetallic Re(I)/Fe(II) complexes with a 1,2,3-triazolyl pyridine chelating moiety

Bioorganometallic complexes have attracted considerable interest and have shown promise for potential application in the treatment and diagnosis of cancer, as well as bioimaging agents, some acting as theranostic agents. The series of novel ferrocene, benzimidazo[1,2-a]quinoline and fluorescein derivatives with bidentate pyridyl-1,2,3-triazole and 2,2'-dipyridylamine and their tricarbonylrhenium(I) complexes was prepared and fully characterised by NMR, single-crystal X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy in biorelevant conditions. The fluorescein and benzimidazo[1,2-a]quinoline ligands and their complexes with Re(I) showed interactions with ds-DNA/RNA and HSA, characterised by thermal denaturation measurements, fluorimetric and circular dichroism titrations. The binding constants revealed that addition of Re(I) increases the affinity of fluorescein but decreases the affinity of benzimidazo[1,2-a]quinoline. The complexation of Re(I) had the opposite effect on fluorescein and benzimidazo[1,2-a]quinoline ligands' fluorimetric sensitivity upon biomacromolecule binding, Re(I) fluorescein complex emission being strongly quenched by DNA/RNA or HSA, while emission of Re(I) benzimidazo[1,2-a]quinolone complex was enhanced, particularly for HSA, making it a promising fluorescent probe. Some mono- and heterobimetallic complexes showed considerable antiproliferative activity on colon cancer cells (CT26 and HT29), with ferrocene dipyridylamine complexes exhibiting the best inhibitory activity, comparable to cisplatin. The correlation of the cytotoxicity data with the linker type between the ferrocene and the 1,2,3-triazole ring suggests that direct binding of the metallocene to the 1,2,3-triazole is favourable for antitumor activity. The Re(I) benzimidazo[1,2-a]quinolone complex showed moderate antiproliferative activity, in contrast to the Re(I) fluorescein complex, which exhibited weak activity on CT26 cells and no activity on HT29 cells. The accumulation of the Re(I) benzimidazo[1,2-a]quinolone complex in the lysosomes of CT26 cells indicates the site of its bioactivity, thus making this complex a potential theranostic agent.

A naphthalene-based heterobimetallic triazolylidene IrIII/PdII complex: regioselective to regiospecific C-H activation, tandem catalysis and a copper-free Sonogashira reaction

Heterobimetallic complexes featuring mesoionic carbene (MIC) donor ligands are gaining enormous popularity in tandem catalysis owing to the combined action of two different metal centers during catalysis. A rare version of the heterobimetallic Pd^II/Ir^III complex possessing a cyclometalated mesoionic carbene (MIC) ligand is presented along with the analogous homodinuclear Pd^II complex. A sterically controlled regiospecific cyclometalation towards the formation of a six-membered ring complex over a five-membered ring complex has been performed using a naphthalene-based bis-MIC ligand platform. The interplay between regioselective vs. regiospecific C-H bond activation for the synthesis of cyclometalated Ir^III complexes has also been demonstrated using the corresponding naphthyl-derived mono-imidazolylidene ligand. Both homodinuclear Pd^II and heterobimetallic Pd^II/Ir^III complexes have been characterized using standard spectroscopic techniques including ¹H, ¹³C{¹H}, 2D correlation NMR spectroscopy and ESI mass spectrometry. The structure of the cyclometalated heterobimetallic complex has been established by single crystal XRD. The heterobimetallic complex has been employed as a pre-catalyst in the tandem Suzuki-Miyaura/transfer hydrogenation reaction and the homobimetallic Pd^II complex has been successfully employed as a catalyst in both the Sonogashira coupling and α-arylation of 1-methyl-2-oxindole.

Towards new coordination modes of 1,2,3-triazolylidene: controlled by the nature of the 1st metalation in a heteroditopic bis-NHC ligand

An unusual effect of the nature of the first metal coordination of a heteroditopic N-heterocyclic carbene ligand (L2) towards the coordination behavior of 1,2,3-tzNHC is explored. The first metal coordination at the ImNHC site (complexes 3 and 4) was noted to substantially influence the electronics of the 1,2,3-triazolium moiety leading to an unprecedented chemistry of this MIC donor. Along this line, the Rh^III/Ir^III-orthometalation in complexes 4 makes the triazolium C₄-H more downfield shifted than C₅-H, whereas a reverse trend, although to a lesser extent, is observed in the case of the non-chelated Pd^II-coordination. This difference in behavior assisted us to achieve the selective activation of triazole C₄/C₅ positions, not observed before, as supported by the isolation of the homo- and hetero-bimetallic complexes, 5, 6 and 7-9via C₅- and C₄-metalation, respectively. Furthermore, the %V _bur calculations eliminate any considerable steric influence and the DFT studies strongly support the selectivity observed during bimetalation.

The first macrocyclic abnormally coordinating tetra-1,2,3-triazole-5-ylidene iron complex: a promising candidate for olefin epoxidation

The first macrocyclic and abnormally coordinating, mesoionic N-heterocyclic carbene iron complex has been synthesised and characterised via ESI-MS, EA, SC-XRD, CV, NMR and UV/Vis spectroscopy. ¹³C-NMR spectroscopy and CV measurements indicate a strong σ-donor ability of the carbene moieties, suggesting an efficient catalytic activity of the iron complex in oxidation reactions. Initial tests in the epoxidation of cis-cyclooctene as a model substrate confirm this assumption.

Mesoionic Imines (MIIs): Strong Donors and Versatile Ligands for Transition Metals and Main Group Substrates

We report the synthesis and the reactivity of 1,2,3‐triazolin‐5‐imine type mesoionic imines (MIIs). The MIIs are accessible by a base‐mediated cycloaddition between a substituted acetonitrile and an aromatic azide, methylation by established routes and subsequent deprotonation. C=O‐stretching frequencies in MII−CO₂ and −Rh(CO)₂Cl complexes were used to determine the overall donor strength. The MIIs are stronger donors than the N‐heterocyclic imines (NHIs). MIIs are excellent ligands for main group elements and transition metals in which they display substituent‐induced fluorine‐specific interactions and undergo C−H activation. DFT calculations gave insights into the frontier orbitals of the MIIs. The calculations predict a relatively small HOMO–LUMO gap compared to other related ligands. MIIs are potentially able to act as both π‐donor and π‐acceptor ligands. This report highlights the potential of MIIs to display exciting properties with a huge potential for future development.

A mesoionic carbene complex of manganese in five oxidation states

Reaction between a carbazole-based mesoionic carbene ligand and manganese(II) iodide results in the formation of a rare air-stable manganese(IV) complex after aerobic workup. Cyclic voltammetry reveals the complex to be stable in five oxidation states. The electronic structure of all five oxidation states is elucidated chemically, spectroscopically (NMR, high-frequency EPR, UV-Vis, MCD), magnetically, and computationally (DFT, CASSCF).

Multinuclear mesoionic 1,2,3-triazolylidene complexes: design, synthesis, and applications

The chemistry of multinuclear metal complexes bearing by N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands, is an area of fast growing interest in modern organometallic chemistry. In particular, complexes supported by mesoionic (MIC) 1,2,3-triazolylidenes are attracting a great deal attention due to their postulated superior donor capacity compared to classical NHC ligands. Despite the readily available synthetic routes to MIC-based ligand platforms featuring several substitution levels, most of the coordination chemistry of triazolylidenes is still dominated by mononuclear complexes. In this short review article, recent progress on the design and synthesis of multinuclear triazolylidene complexes (ranging from di- to tetranuclear species) is discussed. Special emphasis is placed on their structural features, electronic properties and catalytic applications.

Chemistry of Compounds Based on 1,2,3-Triazolylidene-Type Mesoionic Carbenes

Mesoionic carbenes (MICs) of the 1,2,3-triazolylidene type have established themselves as a popular class of compounds over the past decade. Primary reasons for this popularity are their modular synthesis and their strong donor properties. While such MICs have mostly been used in combination with transition metals, the past few years have also seen their utility together with main group elements. In this paper, we present an overview of the recent developments on this class of compounds that include, among others, (i) cationic and anionic MIC ligands, (ii) the donor/acceptor properties of these ligands with a focus on the several methods that are known for estimating such donor/acceptor properties, (iii) a detailed overview of 3d metal complexes and main group compounds with these MIC ligands, (iv) results on the redox and photophysical properties of compounds based on MIC ligands, and (v) an overview on electrocatalysis, redox-switchable catalysis, and small-molecule activation to highlight the applications of compounds based on MIC ligands in contemporary chemistry. By discussing several aspects from the synthetic, spectroscopic, and application point of view of these classes of compounds, we highlight the state of the art of compounds containing MICs and present a perspective for future research in this field.

N-Heterocyclic carbene iron complexes catalyze the ring-opening polymerization of lactide

Poly(lactic acid), PLA, which holds great promise as a biodegradable substitute of fossil resource-derived polyolefins, is industrially produced by the ring-opening polymerization of lactide using a potentially harmful tin catalyst. Based on mechanistic insights into the reaction of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) iron complexes with carbonyl substrates, we surmised and demonstrate here that such complexes are excellent catalysts for the bulk polymerization of lactide. We show that an iron complex with a triazolylidene NHC ligand is active at lactide/catalyst ratios of up to 10 000 : 1, produces polylactide with relatively high number-average molecular weights (up to 50 kg mol⁻¹) and relatively narrow dispersity (Đ ∼ 1.6), and features an apparent polymerization rate constant k_app of up to 8.5 × 10⁻³ s⁻¹, which is more than an order of magnitude higher than that of the industrially used tin catalyst. Kinetic studies and end-group analyses support that the catalytically active species is well defined and that the polymerization proceeds via a coordination–insertion mechanism. The robustness of the catalyst allows technical grade lactide to be polymerized, thus offering ample potential for application on larger scale in an industrially relevant setting.

Iron(ii) complexes containing a mesoionic triazolylidene ligand are highly efficient catalyst precursors for the ring opening polymerization of lactide to poly(lactic acid), surpassing other iron complexes and also industrially utilized Sn(oct)₂.

Bimetallic PdII complexes with NHC/Py/PCy3 donor set ligands: applications in α-arylation, Suzuki–Miyaura and Sonogashira coupling reactions

Bimetallic PdII complexes bearing mixed NHC/Py/PCy3 donor set ligands are presented. A complex with a mixed NHC/PCy3 donor set ligands shows superior activity compared to the PEPPSI type complexes in α-arylation and Sonogashira coupling reactions.

Spin-state control of cobalt(II) and iron(II) complexes with click-derived tripodal ligands through non-covalent and fluorine-specific interactions

The fine-tuning of intermolecular or intramolecular non-covalent interactions (NCIs) and thus the precise synthesis of metal complexes in which the spin states can be controlled by NCIs remains challenging, even though several such complexes have been intensively studied. In this regard, we present mononuclear cobalt(II) and iron(II) complexes with "click"-derived tripodal ligands that contain fluorinated benzyl substituents in the secondary coordination sphere. The complexes were co-crystallized with different solvent molecules to decipher the effect of the crystallized solvents on NCIs, and on the spin state of the metal ion. Additionally, the fluorine-specific interactions in the secondary coordination sphere were examined. We present a first structure-property correlation between the nature of interaction of the (per)fluorinated aromatic substituents on the ligand periphery, and the spin state of the metal complexes. In particular, the TF₅TA containing ligand show interesting stacking motifs depending on the used solvent, and these interactions have an influence on the spin state of the cobalt(II) complexes. Furthermore, the iron(II) complex thereof, Fe(TF₅TA)₂(BF₄)₂·2EtOH displays spin crossover (SCO).

Coupling of CO2 and epoxides catalysed by novel N-fused mesoionic carbene complexes of nickel(II)

We report the syntheses of two rigid mesoionic carbene (MIC) ligands with a carbazole backbone via an intramolecular Finkelstein-cyclisation cascade and investigate their coordination behavior towards nickel(II) acetate. Despite the nickel(II) carbene complexes 4a,b showing only minor differences in their chemical composition, they display curious differences in their chemical properties, e.g. solubility. Furthermore, the potential of these novel MIC complexes in the coupling of carbon dioxide and epoxides as well as the differences in reactivity compared to classical NHC-derived complexes are evaluated.

A gold(I) 1,2,3-triazolylidene complex featuring the interaction between gold and methine hydrogen

A mesoionic N-heterocyclic carbene-gold(I) complex with a unique Au⋯H-C(methine) intramolecular hydrogen bonding interaction has been investigated in the solid state. The structure of this new neutral gold(I)-carbene was characterized by FT-IR and NMR spectroscopy, TGA, and X-ray diffraction techniques. Density functional theory (DFT) and atoms-in-molecule (AIM) analysis revealed that the gold-hydrogen bonding situation is more favored. Besides, the photophysical properties of the gold(I) complex were also investigated.

Click-Derived Triazoles and Triazolylidenes of Manganese for Electrocatalytic Reduction of CO2

A series of new fac-[Mn(L)(CO)₃Br] complexes where L is a bidentate chelating ligand containing mixed mesoionic triazolylidene-pyridine (MIC^py, 1), triazolylidene-triazole (MIC^trz, 2), and triazole-pyridine (trz^py, 3) ligands have been prepared and fully characterized, including the single crystal X-ray diffraction studies of 1 and 2. The abilities of 1–3 and complex fac-[Mn(MIC^MIC)(CO)₃Br] (4) to catalyze the electroreduction of CO₂ has been assessed for the first time. It was found that all complexes displayed a current increase under CO₂ atmosphere, being 3 and 4 the most active complexes. Complex 3, bearing a N^N-based ligand exhibited a good efficiency and an excellent selectivity for reducing CO₂ to CO in the presence of 1.0 M of water, at low overpotential. Interestingly, complex 4 containing the strongly electron donating di-imidazolylidene ligand exhibited comparable activity to 3, when the experiments were performed in neat acetonitrile at slightly higher overpotential (−1.86 vs. −2.14 V).

Mesoionic Carbenes in Low- to High-Valent Vanadium Chemistry

We report the synthesis of vanadium(V) oxo complex 1 with a pincer-type dianionic mesoionic carbene (MIC) ligand L1 and the general formula [VOCl(L1)]. A comparison of the structural (SC-XRD), electronic (UV-vis), and electrochemical (cyclic voltammetry) properties of 1 with the benzimidazolinylidene congener 2 (general formula [VOCl(L2)]) shows that the MIC is a stronger donor also for early transition metals with low d-electron population. Since electrochemical studies revealed both complexes to be reversibly reduced, the stronger donor character of MICs was not only demonstrated for the vanadium(V) but also for the vanadium(IV) oxidation state by isolating the reduced vanadium(IV) complexes [Co(Cp*)2][1] and [Co(Cp*)2][2] ([Co(Cp*)2] = decamethylcobaltocenium). The electronic structures of the compounds were investigated by computational methods. Complex 1 was found to be a moderate precursor for salt metathesis reactions, showing selective reactivity toward phenolates or secondary amides, but not toward primary amides and phosphides, thiophenols, or aryls/alkyls donors. Deoxygenation with electron-rich phosphines failed to give the desired vanadium(III) complex. However, treatment of the deprotonated ligand precursor with vanadium(III) trichloride resulted in the clean formation of the corresponding MIC vanadium(III) complex 6, which undergoes a clean two-electron oxidation with organic azides yielding the corresponding imido complexes. The reaction with TMS-N3 did not afford a nitrido complex, but instead the imido complex 10. This study reveals that, contrary to popular belief, MICs are capable of supporting early transition-metal complexes in a variety of oxidation states, thus making them promising candidates for the activation of small molecules and redox catalysis.

(Hetero)arylazo-1,2,3-triazoles: "Clicked" Photoswitches for Versatile Functionalization and Electronic Decoupling

The development of light-responsive chemical systems often relies on the rational design and suitable incorporation of molecular photoswitches such as azobenzenes. Linking a photoswitch core with another π-conjugated molecular entity may give rise to intramolecular electronic coupling, which can dramatically impair the photoswitch function. Decoupling strategies have been developed based on additionally inserting a linker that can disrupt the through-bond electronic communication. Here we show that 1,2,3-triazole-a commonly used decoupling spacer-can be directly merged into the azoswitch core to construct a class of "self-decoupling" azoswitches called (hetero)arylazo-1,2,3-triazoles. Such azotriazole photoswitches are easily accessed and modularly functionalized by click chemistry. Their photoswitch property can be optimized by rational design of the substituent groups or heteroaryl rings, allowing (near-)quantitative E⇆Z photoisomerization yields and tunable Z-isomer thermal half-lives from days to years. Combined experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that the electronic structure of the photoswitch core is not substantially affected by various substituents attached to the 1,2,3-triazole unit, benefiting from its cross-conjugated nature. The combination of clickable synthesis, tunable photoswitch property, and self-decoupling ability makes (hetero)arylazo-1,2,3-triazoles intriguing molecular tools in developing photoresponsive systems with desired performance.

Tuning the π-Accepting Properties of Mesoionic Carbenes: A Combined Computational and Experimental Study

Mesoionic imidazolylidenes are recognized as excellent electron‐donating ligands in organometallic and main group chemistry. However, these carbene ligands typically show poor π‐accepting properties. A computational analysis of 71 mesoionic imidazolylidenes that bear different aryl or heteroaryl substituents in C2 position was performed. The study has revealed that a diphenyltriazinyl (Dpt) substituent renders the corresponding carbene particularly π‐acidic. The computational results could be corroborated experimentally. A mesoionic imidazolylidene with a Dpt substituent was found to be a better σ‐donor and a better π‐acceptor compared to an Arduengo‐type N‐heterocyclic carbene. To demonstrate the utility of the new carbene, the ligand was used to stabilize a low‐valent paramagnetic tin compound.

Silver-Free Au(I) Catalysis Enabled by Bifunctional Urea- and Squaramide-Phosphine Ligands via H-Bonding

A library of gold(I) chloride complexes with phosphine ligands incorporating pendant (thio)urea and squaramide H-bond donors was prepared with the aim of promoting chloride abstraction from Au(I) via H-bonding. In the absence of silver additives, complexes bearing squaramides and trifluoromethylated aromatic ureas displayed good catalytic activity in the cyclization of N-propargyl benzamides, as well as in a 1,6-enyne cycloisomerization, a tandem cyclization-indole addition reaction and the hydrohydrazination of phenylacetylene. Kinetic studies and DFT calculations indicate that the energetic span of the reaction is accounted by both the chloride abstraction step, facilitated by the bidentate H-bond donor via an associative mechanism, and the subsequent cyclization step.

Distinct photodynamics of κ-N and κ-C pseudoisomeric iron(II) complexes

Two closely related FeII complexes with 2,6-bis(1-ethyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4yl)pyridine and 2,6-bis(1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene)pyridine ligands are presented to gain new insights into the photophysics of bis(tridentate) iron(ii) complexes. The [Fe(N^N^N)2]2+ pseudoisomer sensitizes singlet oxygen through a MC state with nanosecond lifetime after MLCT excitation, while the bis(tridentate) [Fe(C^N^C)2]2+ pseudoisomer possesses a similar 3MLCT lifetime as the tris(bidentate) [Fe(C^C)2(N^N)]2+ complexes with four mesoionic carbenes.

A photoresponsive palladium complex of an azopyridyl-triazole ligand: light-controlled solubility drives catalytic activity in the Suzuki coupling reaction

Herein, the design and synthesis of a click-derived Pd-complex merged with a photoswitchable azobenzene unit is presented. While in the trans-form of the switch the complex showed limited solubility, the photogenerated cis-form rendered the molecule soluble in polar solvents. This light-controllable solubility was exploited to affect the catalytic activity in the Suzuki coupling reaction. The effect of the substrate and catalyst concentration and light intensity on the proceeding and outcome of the reaction was studied. Dehalogenation of the aryl iodide starting material was found to be a major side reaction; however, its occurrence was dependent on the applied light intensity.

A Cytotoxic Bis(1,2,3-triazol-5-ylidene)carbazolide Gold(III) Complex Targets DNA by Partial Intercalation

The syntheses of bis(triazolium)carbazole precursors and their corresponding coinage metal (Au, Ag) complexes are reported. For alkylated triazolium salts, di- or tetranuclear complexes with bridging ligands were isolated, while the bis(aryl) analogue afforded a bis(carbene) AuI -CNC pincer complex suitable for oxidation to the redox-stable [AuIII (CNC)Cl]+ cation. Although the ligand salt and the [AuIII (CNC)Cl]+ complex were both notably cytotoxic toward the breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231, the AuIII complex was somewhat more selective. Electrophoresis, viscometry, UV-vis, CD and LD spectroscopy suggest the cytotoxic [AuIII (CNC)Cl]+ complex behaves as a partial DNA intercalator. In silico screening indicated that the [AuIII (CNC)Cl]+ complex can target DNA three-way junctions with good specificity, several other regular B-DNA forms, and Z-DNA. Multiple hydrophobic π-type interactions involving T and A bases appear to be important for B-form DNA binding, while phosphate O⋅⋅⋅Au interactions evidently underpin Z-DNA binding. The CNC ligand effectively stabilizes the AuIII ion, preventing reduction in the presence of glutathione. Both the redox stability and DNA affinity of the hit compound might be key factors underpinning its cytotoxicity in vitro.

Manganese complexes with chelating and bridging di-triazolylidene ligands: synthesis and reactivity

New manganese complexes bearing di-triazolylidene (di-trz) ligands are described. Depending on the wingtip substituents of the triazolylidene ligand and the synthetic procedure, two different ligand coordination modes were observed, i.e, bridging and chelating. A series of Mn(i) complexes of the general type fac-[Mn(di-trzR)(CO)3Br] (R = Me, Et, Mes) with a chelating di-trz ligand were prepared via Ag-transmetalation. In contrast, the in situ deprotonation of the triazolium salts with KOBut yielded the bimetallic Mn(0) complexes [Mn2(CO)8(μ-di-trzR)] with a bridging di-trz ligand when short alkyl chains (Me, Et, i-Pr) are present as the N1 substituents of the triazolylidene ligand. The molecular structures of monometallic and bimetallic complexes were determined by X-ray diffraction studies. In addition, the cationic fac-[Mn(di-trzEt)(CO)2(PPh3)2]Br complex, a rare example of a dicarbonyl Mn(i) N-heterocyclic carbene, was obtained when fac-[Mn(di-trzEt)(CO)3Br] was irradiated with visible light in the presence of PPh3. The crystal structure revealed a slightly distorted octahedral geometry around the Mn(i) centre, with the chelating di-triazolylidene ligand situated in trans position to the two CO ligands in the equatorial plane, and the two phosphine ligands occupying the axial positions. Cyclic voltammetry studies show reversible redox processes for the monometallic Mn(i) complexes, and a quasi-reversible EC mechanism for the oxidation of the bimetallic complexes. Infrared spectroelectrochemical studies along with DFT calculations for fac-[Mn(di-trzEt)(CO)3Br] suggest that the observed two consecutive reductions both occur at the metal centre.

Modeling ligand electrochemical parameters by repulsion-corrected eigenvalues

Ligand electrochemical parameters, E_L , more commonly known as Lever parameters, have played a major research role in understanding redox processes involved in inorganic electrochemistry, enzymatic reactions, catalysis, solar cells, biochemistry, and materials science. Despite their broad usefulness, Lever parameters are not well understood at a first-principles level. Using density functional theory, we demonstrate in this contribution that a ligand's Lever parameter is fundamentally related to the ligand's ability to alter the eigenvalue of the electroactive spin-orbital in an octahedral transition metal complex. Our analysis furthers a first-principles understanding of the nature of Lever parameters.

Bright luminescent lithium and magnesium carbene complexes

We report on the convenient synthesis of a CNC pincer ligand composed of carbazole and two mesoionic carbenes, as well as the corresponding lithium- and magnesium complexes. Mono-deprotonation affords a rare "naked" amide anion. In contrast to the proligand and its mono-deprotonated form, tri-deprotonated s-block complexes show bright luminescence, and their photophysical properties were therefore investigated by absorption- and luminescence spectroscopy. They reveal a quantum yield of 16% in solution at ambient temperature. Detailed quantum-chemical calculations assist in rationalizing the emissive properties based on an Intra-Ligand-Charge-Transfer (ILCT) between the carbazolido- and mesoionic carbene ligands. (Earth-)alkali metals prevent the distortion of the ligand following excitation and, thus, by avoiding non-radiative deactivation support bright luminescence.

Directed Design of a AuI Complex with a Reduced Mesoionic Carbene Radical Ligand: Insights from 1,2,3-Triazolylidene Selenium Adducts and Extensive Electrochemical Investigations

Carbene-based radicals are important for both fundamental and applied chemical research. Herein, extensive electrochemical investigations of nine different 1,2,3-triazolylidene selenium adducts are reported. It is found that the half-wave potentials of the first reduction of the selones correlate with their calculated LUMO levels and the LUMO levels of the corresponding triazolylidene-based mesoionic carbenes (MICs). Furthermore, unexpected quasi-reversibility of the reduction of two triazoline selones, exhibiting comparable reduction potentials, was discovered. Through UV/Vis/NIR and EPR spectroelectrochemical investigations supported by DFT calculations, the radical anion was unambiguously assigned to be triazoline centered. This electrochemical behavior was transferred to a triazolylidene-type MIC-gold phenyl complex resulting in a MIC-radical coordinated AuI species. Apart from UV-Vis-NIR and EPR spectroelectrochemical investigations of the reduction, the reduced gold-coordinated MIC radical complex was also formed in situ in the bulk through chemical reduction. This is the first report of a monodentate triazolylidene-based MIC ligand that can be reduced to its anion radical in a metal complex. The results presented here provide design principles for stabilizing radicals based on MICs.
