Out-and-in spiral spectroscopic imaging in rat brain at 7 T

With standard spectroscopic imaging, high spatial resolution is achieved at the price of a large number of phase-encoding steps, leading to long acquisition times. Fast spatial encoding methods reduce the minimum total acquisition time. In this article, a k-space scanning scheme using a continuous series of growing and shrinking, or "out-and-in," spiral trajectories is implemented and the feasibility of spiral spectroscopic imaging for animal models at high B(0) field is demonstrated. This method was applied to rat brain at 7 T. With a voxel size of about 8.7 microl (as calculated from the point-spread function), a 30 x 30 matrix, and a spectral bandwidth of 11 kHz, the minimum scan time was 9 min 20 sec for a signal-to-noise ratio of 7.1 measured on the N-acetylaspartate peak.

Improved cardiac sodium MR imaging by density-weighted phase-encoding

PURPOSE

To show that density-weighted (DW) k-space sampling improves the quality of human cardiac sodium imaging, a novel method was implemented that combines the high signal-to-noise efficiency of three-dimensional phase-encoding with the advantageous localization performance of nonuniform sampling. A simulation demonstrates substantially reduced blood contamination in the myocardium.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

At 2.0 T, DW cardiac "fast" sodium images with a voxel size of 844 microL in seven minutes and "high-resolution" scans in 30 minutes with a voxel size of 570 microL were acquired. For comparison, conventional gradient-echo imaging was also performed.

RESULTS

In the DW images, a myocardial signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 16.0 in the left ventricle and 8.5 in the septum (N = 4) was measured. With longer experimental duration (about 30 minutes; N = 3), the image quality and the SNR could be further improved (voxel size: 570 microL; SNR: blood 16.1, septum 10.6). Compared to the gradient-echo images, the image quality was substantially improved.

CONCLUSION

This new method for human cardiac sodium imaging provides high image quality combined with optimal sensitivity and thus may improve the clinical applicability of 23Na cardiac MRI.

Effects of constant frequency noise in magnetic resonance imaging with nonuniform k-space sampling

Magnetic resonance images can be compromised by constant frequency (CF) noise, such as radio frequency (RF) noise. We investigate the effects of CF noise in four imaging methods with non-uniform k-space sampling: single-shot echo-planar imaging (EPI) with sinusoidal readout gradients, phase-encoded echo-planar spectroscopic imaging (EPSI) with sinusoidal readout gradients, projection-reconstruction imaging, and single-shot spiral imaging. The characteristics of the CF artifacts in each imaging method are studied with numerical simulations. CF noise is found to cause artifacts of nonclassic forms in the reconstructed images. Specifically, dashed-line, streak, and spiral patterns of CF noise appear in EPI/EPSI with sinusoidal readout gradients, projection-reconstruction imaging, and spiral imaging, respectively. The analytical expression for dashed-line artifacts is found to be a weighted sum of Bessel functions and is verified with in vivo experiments. The CF artifacts can be removed during post-processing by eliminating the noise spikes in the Fourier domain of the raw data.

Optimal gradient waveform design for projection imaging and projection reconstruction echoplanar spectroscopic imaging

The use of modulated B0 projection gradient waveforms is proposed for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) to shape the k-space sampling density function to match the profile of an applied reconstruction window function. This allows for a time-efficient means of maximizing the signal-to-noise ratio when, for example, a low-pass spatial filter, designed to reduce k-space truncation artifacts and corresponding point-spread function sidelobe energies, is implemented. Both the two-dimensional (2D) and 3D cases are investigated. To create the projection gradient waveforms, a design method is developed that uses nonlinear constrained optimization (NLCO) to minimize the variance of the reconstruction noise. The design is subject to both equality and inequality constraints, which include the maximum gradient magnitude and slew rate. It is shown that NLCO can also be applied to twisting the projection trajectories for purposes of reducing the data acquisition time while still maintaining the desired sampling density. Applications to 1H MRSI are investigated via simulations. Advantages and limitations of the new sampling schemes are discussed.

Spatially resolved two-dimensional spectroscopy

A method is presented to collect spatially resolved two-dimensional spectra on a conventional clinical scanner. Time-varying gradients during the readout period rapidly sample data simultaneously for two spatial and two spectral dimensions. The k-space trajectories are based on spiral paths that make efficient use of the gradient hardware. A gridding algorithm is used for reconstruction. With the spiral-based readout gradients, current single-voxel two-dimensional techniques can be extended to spatially resolved volumetric acquisitions. The method is demonstrated with a two-dimensional J-resolved acquisition of a phantom with separate compartments of lactic acid and ethyl alcohol in water. Data were acquired with a spatial resolution of 18 x 18 pixels over a 24 cm field of view, 400 Hz spectral bandwidth in the chemical shift dimension with a 3.8 Hz resolution, and 50 Hz spectral bandwidth in the second frequency dimension with a 1.56 Hz resolution.

Concrete thawing studied by single-point ramped imaging

A series of two-dimensional images of proton distribution in a hardened concrete sample has been obtained during the thawing process (from -50 degrees C up to 11 degrees C). The SPRITE sequence is optimal for this study given the characteristic short relaxation times of water in this porous media (T2* < 200 micros and T1 < 3.6 ms). The relaxation parameters of the sample were determined in order to optimize the time efficiency of the sequence, permitting a 4-scan 64 x 64 acquisition in under 3 min. The image acquisition is fast on the time scale of the temperature evolution of the specimen. The frozen water distribution is quantified through a position based study of the image contrast. A multiple point acquisition method is presented and the signal sensitivity improvement is discussed.

High spatial resolution and speed in MRSI

The in vivo applications of magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) have expanded significantly over the past 10 years and have reached the point where clinical trials are underway for a number of different diseases. One of the limiting factors in the widespread use of this technology has been the lack of widely available tools for obtaining data which are localized to sufficiently small tissue volumes to make an impact upon diagnosis and treatment planning. This is especially difficult within the timeframe of a clinical MR examination, which requires that both anatomic and metabolic data are acquired and processed. Recent advances in the hardware and software associated with clinical scanners have provided the potential for improvements in the spatial and time resolution of imaging and spectral data. The two areas which hold the most promise in terms of MRSI data are the use of phased array coils and the implementation of echo planar k-space sampling techniques. These could have immediate impact for 1H MRSI and may prove valuable for future applications of 31P MRSI.
