Beauveria bassiana: Biocontrol Beyond Lepidopteran Pests

Entomopathogenicity of Ascomycete Fungus Cordyceps militaris on the Cotton Bollworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

This study investigated the exposure of the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa zea (Boddie) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to a novel pathogenic fungal agent historically associated with human medicinal value, a commercial strain of Cordyceps militaris ((L.) Fr.) Vuill. (Hypocreales). A series of comparative studies were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of two different exposure methods using four concentrations (n × 10⁹, n × 10⁸, n × 10⁷, n × 10⁶) of C. militaris, where n × 10⁹ provided a concentration of approximately 420 ± 37 spores per mm² with 398 ± 28 viable spores. Survival of cotton bollworms of all stages was not affected by C. militaris at any concentration 1 d post-exposure. The greatest reduction in survival and highest sporulation rates were observed primarily on or after 7 d post-exposure for early instars (first and second). Significant declines in the survival of early instars were observed for all concentrations at 7 d, and 95% mortality by 10 d, with the exception of the fifth instars that experienced a less severe reduction in survival (35%) when exposed to any concentrations used in the study. Survival of late instars (third to fifth) ranged from 44% to 68% on day 10, while adult survival was near 99% across the duration of the experiment. The relatively narrow range observed for both the lethal concentration and sporulation of second, third, and fifth instar cotton bollworms exposed to the C. militaris strain may demonstrate potential field application for control of larval populations of cotton bollworms.

Prospective of mycorrhiza and Beauvaria bassiana silica nanoparticles on Gossypium hirsutum L. plants as biocontrol agent against cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis

BACKGROUND

Plant-herbivorous insects are a severe danger to the world's agricultural production of various crops. Insecticides used indiscriminately resulted in habitat destruction due to their high toxicity, as well as disease resistance. In this respect, the development of a sustainable approach to supreme crop production with the least damage is a crucially prerequisite. As a result, the current study was carried out to understand the potential effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi along with Beauvaria bassiana silica nanoparticles (Si NPs) as a new approach to increase cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L. Merr.) defense against an insect herbivore, Spodoptera littoralis. AM and non-AM cotton plants were infested with S. littoralis and then sprayed with a biopesticide [B. bassiana Si NPs] or a chemical insecticide (Chlorpyrifos).

RESULTS

The gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of B. bassiana Si NPs fungal extract showed that the major constituents identified were Oleyl alcohol, trifluoroacetate, 11-Dodecen-1-AL and 13-Octadecenal, (Z)-(CAS). Besides, results revealed a highly significant decrease in growth parameters in S. littoralis infested plants, however, with AM fungal inoculation a substantial improvement in growth traits and biochemical parameters such as protein and carbohydrates contents was observed. In addition, stimulation in proline and antioxidant enzymes activity and a decrease in malondialdehyde content were observed after AM inoculation.

CONCLUSION

AM fungi mitigate the harmful effects of herbivorous insects by strengthening the cotton plant's health via enhancing both morphological and biochemical traits that can partially or completely replace the application of chemical insecticides.

Reinforcing the bulwark: unravelling the efficient applications of plant phenolics and tannins against environmental stresses

Phenolic compounds are plant secondary metabolites that play a vital role in plant resistance. They are mainly synthetized from the amino acid L-phenylalanine, which is converted to trans-cinnamic acid in a series of biochemical reactions. These compounds take part in the regulation of seed germination and cooperate in regulating the growth of plants, also taking part in defense responses during infection, UV exposure, injuries, and heavy metal stress. The aim of this review is to discuss the role of phenolic compounds in the interactions of plants with various stress factors, both biotic and abiotic with special attention to their antioxidant properties. Therefore, understanding the biochemical potential of the phenylpropanoid derivatives would be beneficial in sustaining the metabolic processes used by plants to thrive and endure under adverse conditions.

Beauveria bassiana: a new N6-(2-hydroxyethyl)-adenosine-producing fungus

N6-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-adenosine (HEA), which was the first calcium antagonist derived from biological sources, has been intensively investigated because of its ability to inhibit tumour cell proliferation, restrain inflammation, protect kidneys and function as a sedative and insecticide. Up to now, the production of HEA has been detected only in a few species such as Cordyceps pruinosa, C. militaris and Isaria tenuipes. Here, we found a new HEA-producing fungus, which was identified as Beauveria bassiana based on morphological and phylogenetic characteristics. The HEA production was verified by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry in this fungus. Moreover, HEA was also detected in the mycelia of two other B. bassiana strains from different origins, but not in the culture medium of all tested B. bassiana strains. The maximum production of HEA (0.8483 ± 0.0439 mg/g mycelia dry weight) was achieved on day 7. The fungal biomass and kinetics of HEA production exhibited similar trends over the duration of the culture period. This is the first report describing HEA production in B. bassiana, which suggests that this fungal strain may have new applications as a source of HEA.
