Similar tactile distance anisotropy across segments of the arm

A substantial literature has described anisotropy of tactile distance perception across many body parts. In general, the distance between two touches is felt as larger when the touches are oriented with the mediolateral axis of the limbs than when oriented with the proximodistal axis. In this study, we investigated tactile distance perception across the arm, measuring anisotropy on the upper arm, forearm, and hand dorsum. Participants made forced-choice judgments of which of two pairs of tactile distances felt larger and anisotropy was measured using the method of constant stimuli. Clear anisotropy was found on all three regions of the arm. There was no apparent difference in the magnitude of anisotropy across segments of the arm. We further measured the physical curvature of the arm and show that this cannot account of the perceptual anisotropy observed.

Perception of Tactile Distance on the Back

The perceived distance between two touches is anisotropic on many parts of the body. Generally, tactile distances oriented across body width are perceived as larger than distances oriented along body length, though the magnitude of such biases differs substantially across the body. In this study, we investigated tactile distance perception on the back. Participants made verbal estimates of the perceived distance between pairs of touches oriented either across body width or along body length on (a) the left hand, (b) the left upper back, and (c) the left lower back. There were clear tactile distance anisotropies on the hand and upper back, with distances oriented across body width overestimated relative to those along body length/height, consistent with previous results. On the lower back, however, an anisotropy in exactly the opposite direction was found. These results provide further evidence that tactile distance anisotropies vary systematically across the body and suggest that the spatial representation of touch on the lower back may differ qualitatively from that on other regions of the body.

Dermatomal Organization of SI Leg Representation in Humans: Revising the Somatosensory Homunculus

Penfield and Rasmussen's homunculus is the valid map of the neural body representation of nearly each textbook of biology, physiology, and neuroscience. The somatosensory homunculus places the foot representation on the mesial surface of the postcentral gyrus followed by the representations of the lower leg and the thigh in superio-lateral direction. However, this strong homuncular organization contradicts the "dermatomal" organization of spinal nerves. We used somatosensory-evoked magnetic fields and source analysis to study the leg's neural representation in the primary somatosensory cortex (SI). We show that the representation of the back of the thigh is located inferior to the foot's representation in SI whereas the front of the thigh is located laterally to the foot's representation. This observation indicates that the localization of the leg in SI rather follows the dermatomal organization of spinal nerves than the typical map of neighboring body parts as depicted in Penfield and Rasmussen's illustration of the somatosensory homunculus.

Spatial Memory for Patterns of Taps on the Fingers

Ongoing development of haptic technology has the potential to provide significant improvement in safety and performance in demanding environments where vision and hearing are compromised. Research regarding the cognitive psychology of touch is lacking and could be beneficial in the development of expectations about human performance for the refinement and implementation of haptic technology. This study examines haptic-spatial memory using a novel assessment method based on finger anatomy. In addition, evidence is presented for a serial-position effect for haptic-spatial memory that is analogous to the classic serial-position effect demonstrated in the verbal recall of word lists. Finally, haptic-spatial memory is compared with short- and long-term memory for visual-spatial tasks.

Somatotopic direct projections from orofacial areas of primary somatosensory cortex to pons and medulla, especially to trigeminal sensory nuclear complex, in rats

The primary somatosensory cortex (S1) projects to the thalamus and brainstem somatosensory nuclei and modulates somatosensory information ascending to the S1 itself. However, the projections from the S1 to the brainstem second-order somatosensory neuron pools have not been fully studied. To address this in rats, we first revealed the somatotopic representation of orofacial areas in the S1 by recording cortical surface potentials evoked by stimulation of the lingual, mental, infraorbital, and frontal nerves. We then examined the morphology of descending projections from the electrophysiologically defined orofacial S1 areas to the pons and medulla after injections of an anterograde tracer, biotinylated dextranamine (BDA), into the orofacial S1 areas. BDA-labeled axon terminals were seen mostly in the trigeminal sensory nuclear complex (TSNC) and had a strong contralateral predominance. They also showed a somatotopic arrangement in dorsoventral and superficial-deep directions within almost all rostrocaudal TSNC levels, and in a rostrocaudal direction within the trigeminal caudal subnucleus. In the principal nucleus (Vp) or oral subnucleus (Vo) of TSNC, the BDA-labeled axon terminals showed a somatotopic arrangement closely matched to that of the electrophysiologically defined projection sites of orofacial primary afferents; these projection sites were marked by injections of a retrograde tracer, Fluorogold (FG), into the Vp or Vo. The FG injections labeled a large number of S1 neurons, with a strong contralateral predominance, in a somatotopic manner, which corresponded to that presented in the electrophysiologically defined orofacial S1 areas. The present results suggest that the orofacial S1 projections to somatotopically matched regions of trigeminal second-order somatosensory neuron pools may allow the orofacial S1 to accurately modulate orofacial somatosensory transmission to higher brain centers including the orofacial S1 itself.

Fitting pieces in the peripheral nerve puzzle

Findings from comparative microneurography are reviewed, i.e., data obtained by exploring human nerves with tungsten electrodes or concentric needle electrodes under similar conditions. It has emerged that activity in single myelinated fibers originates near nodes of Ranvier. Other data have shown that Ranvier nodes tend to cluster in certain regions of a fascicle and belong to fibers of the same modality which innervate the same skin area. This segregation involves all four main classes of myelinated low-threshold skin afferents. Fiber populations of the same modality may act as peripheral projection modules involved in somatosensory processing of tactile stimuli to cognitive levels. The fiber bundle arrangement of the nerves may be important for conserving functional gnosis in conditions where peripheral nerve fibers are lost. This organization may also be critical as a substrate to promote reinnervation after nerve cut followed by peripheral nerve suture. It is therefore less critical for an outgrowing fiber to find its exact distal counterpart. Even if misguided outgrowth occurs into the endoneurial tube of a neighboring distal fiber of the same modality with an adjacent receptive field, function can be reestablished. A precise nerve topography might also be of significance for obtaining a functionally satisfactory recovery after avulsion injuries treated by nerve root implantation into the spinal cord. Thus, there is in man an ordered nerve fiber organization, both in the periphery and in the CNS, which may have profound functional significance both under normal conditions and in disease.

Epicranial sensory evoked potential recordings for repeated assessment of cortical functions in mice

In the present study, we describe a simple and minimally invasive method to record sensory evoked potentials (SEP) in the anesthetized mouse. The hardware includes a 16-channel acquisition system with a high signal/noise ratio and high temporal resolution. Under general anesthesia the skull is exposed and stainless steel electrodes are placed directly over the bone. A computer controlled electromechanical stimulation is applied to a single whisker or a group of whiskers unilaterally and cortical responses are recorded bilaterally. Primary SEP are detected over the contralateral barrel cortex, but delayed signals appear over the motor cortex, secondary somatosensory cortex and the ipsilateral hemisphere. The size of evoked SEP correlates with the number of stimulated whiskers and responses are reproducible and consistent over time when recorded repeatedly for up to 6 weeks. We conclude that epicranial multichannel recording of SEP represents an interesting, minimally invasive approach to monitor repeatedly cortical activity and study certain aspects of long-term plasticity of evoked responses in mice.

Somatosensory homunculus as drawn by MEG

We studied a detailed somatosensory representation map of the human primary somatosensory cortex using magnetoencephalography. Somatosensory-evoked magnetic fields following tactile stimulation of multiple points in the right hemibody (including the tongue, lips, fingers, arm, trunk, leg, and foot) were analyzed in five normal subjects. We were able to estimate equivalent current dipoles (ECDs) following stimulation of the tongue, lips, fingers, palm, forearm, elbow, upper arm, and toes in most subjects and those following the stimulation of the chest, ankle, and thigh in one subject. The ECDs were located in the postcentral gyrus and generally arranged in order along the central sulcus, which is compatible with the somatosensory "homunculus." Linear distances, averaged in five subjects, from the receptive area of the thumb to that of the tongue, little finger, forearm, upper arm, and toes were estimated to be 2.42 +/- 0.28, 1.25 +/- 0.28, 2.21 +/- 0.72, 2.75 +/- 0.63, and 5.29 +/- 0.48 cm, respectively. The moment of each ECD, which suggested the size of the cortical areas responsive to the stimulation, was also compatible with the bizarre proportion of the homunculus with a large tongue, lips, and fingers. According to these results, we were able to reproduce a large part of the somatosensory homunculus quantitatively on an individual brain MRI.

Lateral asymmetry of the scalp distribution of somatosensory evoked potential amplitude

Somatosensory potentials evoked by brief low-intensity electrical pulses delivered separately to the left and right index fingers were recorded from the scalp over the posterior half of the contralateral hemisphere in normal human subjects. In two experiments it was found that the scalp areas enclosed by 75 and 90% of maximum-amplitude isopotential contour lines of the early cortically generated complexes were more restricted over the left hemisphere. This asymmetrical evoked potential distribution supports the proposal by Semmes from her observations of brain-damaged patients that elementary somatosensory representation is focal in the left hemisphere and diffuse in the right.

Cerebral magnetic responses to stimulation of tibial and sural nerves

We report somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEFs) to stimulation of the mixed posterior tibial nerve (PTN) and the sensory sural nerve (SN) in 6 healthy subjects. The first peak of the responses occurred at 39-50 ms (P40m), with a 2-3 ms longer latency for SN than PTN stimulation. Within 200 ms several other deflections followed, with interindividually varying waveforms and latencies. Magnetic field mappings indicated that the source of P40m for PTN can be modelled by a single equivalent current dipole at the primary sensorimotor cortex; for the smaller responses to SN stimulation the single dipole model was less applicable. Field patterns for later deflections differed from those of P40m, indicating that several current sources within or near the primary foot projection area are sequentially activated after stimulation of both a mixed and a sensory lower limb nerve. These late deflections could not always be satisfactorily explained by single current dipoles, suggesting more complex geometries for the underlying neural activity.

Sensory cortical tongue representation in man

Extensive data on cortical tongue representation were analyzed in 100 patients who underwent craniotomy and cortical mapping by electrical stimulation for surgical treatment of epilepsy. As noted in the literature, the tongue is extensively represented within the central nervous system with a highly organized sensorimotor system and the data from this study corroborate a large cortical representation of the human tongue over the postcentral gyrus. The tongue was found to have a clear somatotopic organization over the postcentral area and to be represented bilaterally to a significant degree. Furthermore, the tongue appears to have an asymmetrical sensory cortical representation, as cerebral dominance for speech is more extensively represented on the dominant hemisphere. Cortical tongue mapping has proved extremely useful in determining the point of junction of the central and Sylvian sulci, a crucial landmark during surgical cortical resections.

First somatosensory cortical columns and associated neuronal clusters of nucleus ventralis posterolateralis of the cat: an anatomical demonstration

Microlesions (30--275 microns in diameter) were placed in VPLm of the cat and the terminal axonal degeneration in SI cortex was stained using the Fink-Heimer I technique. Following each of these microlesions, small, localized patches or subcolumns of degeneration, relatively light in density, were observed within laminae IIIb and IV of SI when viewed in the coronal plane. In addition, a few degenerating fibers ascended to lamina I. These multiple subcolumns had distinct radial boundaries and were narrow in the mediolateral plane (80--120 microns in width) but elongated rostro-caudally (2500--3000 microns in length). Localized patches of degeneration were separated at their widest points by a distance of 500 microns medio--laterally, but at various rostro--caudal levels of SI were observed to merge into larger columns of degeneration (250--400 microns) and then separate again into smaller multiple patches (i.e., a "zebra-like" pattern). Small injections of HRP into the forelimb region of area 3b or rostral area 1--2 of SI resulted in the labeling of small, discrete clusters of neurons in the ventral regions of VPLm. The clusters examined ranged in size from 140--350 microns in medio--lateral diameter and were elongated rostro--caudally (up to 500 microns in extent); virtually all cells within a cluster appeared labeled, but not equally so. A pattern of HRP labeling different from that observed following area 3b and rostral area 1--2 injections was observed following injections into more caudal regions of area 1--2 and into SII cortex. The labeling that resulted from these injections was not in the form of neuronal clusters but instead labeled cells tended to be scattered in more dorsal regions of VPLm. This scattering did not appear to be random since the labeled neurons were grouped within the same general area of VPLm. Labeling was distributed throughout a number of cell clusters, comprising only a small proportion of cells within each cluster. The pattern of labeling seen after caudal area 1--2 and SII injections differed only in its rostro--caudal extent within VPLm. SII injections generally resulted in labeling along the full rostro--caudal dimension of VPLm. A differential organization of the anatomy of thalamocortical projections to the various subdivisions of SI and to SII was noted in this study. It is postulated that the multiple, discrete patches of degeneration in laminae IIIb and IV of SI represent a portion of the somatosensory cortical columns and that the HRP-labeled clusters seen in VPLm following area 3b and rostral area 1--2 are the subcortical equivalents of these subcolumns.

Tactile pattern perception

Because efforts to use the cutaneous sense for conveying speech and visual information have met with only partial success, it would be useful to understand better the pattern-sensing capabilities of touch. This paper is an account of the sensory and perceptual factors known or hypothesized to limit the tactile perception of simple two-dimensional patterns, with special attention to the limited spatial bandwidth of touch.

Sensory discriminability comparisons in human and monkey with implications for the study of central nervous correlates

Psychophysical measurements of sensory discriminability were obtained from rhesus monkeys and humans to suprathreshold electrical cutaneous stimulation by employing a two-choice discrimination task and a signal detection theoretical analysis. Sensory discriminatory capacities were found to be similar for monkeys and humans. Choice-latency data permitted the construction of relative operating characteristic (ROC) functions for both groups. These functions provided similar descriptions of the hypothetical sensory process underlying the discrimination performance of both species. Theoretical predictions were made concerning characteristics of the underlying sensory activity and tested by a joint analysis of behavior and somatosensory evoked potentials obtained from monkeys. Results indicated that the magnitude of an average evoked component with peaks at 40 and 70 msec in one monkey, and 60 and 100 msec in the other, correlated well with behavioral choices and choice latencies. The evidence obtained in these studies was discussed in the context of neural coding of sensation in humans and monkeys.
