Role of sham feeding in postprandial changes of gastric myoelectrical activity

No difference in postprandial mesenteric blood flow between healthy younger and elderly individuals

We recently used phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (PC-MRI) to demonstrate an attenuated postprandial blood flow response in the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) in patients with Parkinson's disease compared to age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Since both groups showed substantial inter-individual variations, we extended the cohort of controls with a group of young individuals to investigate possible age-related effects. Seventeen healthy young subjects aged < 30 years and 17 elderly subjects aged > 50 years underwent serial PC-MRI to measure the postprandial blood flow response in the SMA after ingestion of a standardized liquid test meal (∼400 kcal). Postprandial blood flow dynamics in SMA did not differ between young and elderly subjects. A noticeable inter-individual variation in postprandial intestinal blood flow increase was found, and approximately 30% of the variation could be explained by the preprandial blood flow. Regardless of age, some subjects showed a remarkable transient SMA blood flow increase immediately after meal intake. This study provides tentative evidence that postprandial blood flow dynamics in SMA in healthy young and elderly subjects do not substantially differ, indicating that age is without impact on vascular response in SMA as an indicator for regulation of mesenteric perfusion in response to food intake.

Influence of visual food cues on autonomic activity and craving

In this study, we tested the hypothesis that autonomic control of the stomach is related to craving and is modulated by visual food cues. Twenty-nine healthy human participants were shown pictures of either high- or low-appeal food, as well as non-food pictures, and were asked to rate how much they wanted to eat each item using a 7-point Likert scale. Simultaneously, the electrogastrogram, electrocardiogram, electrodermal activity, respiration rate, and pupil diameter were recorded. After the ingestion of a 500-kcal liquid meal, participants were asked to perform the task a second time. Despite changes in craving ratings, we did not find changes in the amplitude of the gastric rhythm, but we found increases in pupil diameter for the high appeal food pictures. Moreover, craving ratings were mostly related to increases in pupil and tonic electrodermal activity, compatible with an increase in arousal and a heightened motivational response to food.

Characteristics of Intestinal Myoelectrical and Motor Activities in Diet-Induced Obese Rats: Obesity and Motility

BACKGROUND

Gastrointestinal motility has been reported to be altered in obesity. However, it is unknown whether intestinal myoelectrical activity (IMA) is also changed in obesity.

AIMS

The aim of this study was to characterize intestinal myoelectrical and motility activities in the fasting state, during feeding, and postprandial state after various test meals in diet-induced obese (DIO) rats in comparison with regular rats.

METHODS

IMA was recorded in the fasting, feeding, and postprandial states in DIO and regular rats. Regular laboratory chow, high-fat solid food, and high-fat liquid food were used to test IMA responses to different meals.

RESULTS

(1) The intestinal slow waves in the DIO rats were not different from those in normal rats in the fasting or postprandial state. Neither intestinal transit nor the number of intestinal contractions per minute was altered in DIO rats although gastric emptying was accelerated. (2) Both DIO rats and normal rats showed altered IMA during the first minute of feeding (cephalic stimulation). (3) The intestinal slow waves in both DIO rats and regular rats were impaired slightly but significantly after intake of a high-fat meal.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study demonstrates that intestinal myoelectrical activity is not altered in DIO rats and its postprandial responses to various meals are not altered either. High-fat meals induce intestinal dysrhythmia but do not have a chronic impact on intestinal slow waves in DIO rats.

Sham Feeding with Bacon Does Not Alter Transit Time or Complete Examination Rate During Small Bowel Capsule Endoscopy

BACKGROUND

During capsule endoscopy (CE) studies, the complete examination rate (CER) can be increased by prolonging capsule battery life or reducing gastric transit time (GTT) and/or small bowel transit time (SBTT). However, despite enhanced battery life, 10% of studies remain incomplete. Previously studied interventions to reduce SBTT and enhance CER have produced conflicting results. We hypothesize that this may be a consequence of an insufficiently potent stimulus of small bowel motility.

AIMS

To examine whether potent stimulation of the cephalic response of digestion during small bowel CE reduces GTT and/or SBTT and thus increases the CER.

METHODS

A single-blind randomized trial was performed to evaluate the effect of bacon sham feeding on GTT, SBTT and CER.

RESULTS

Baseline characteristics were similar between 63 sham fed patients and 59 controls. The median GTT was 17 min (9-65) in the bacon group and 25 min (14-55) in the control group. The median SBTT was 199 min (119-316) and 222 min (151-287), respectively. Cox proportional hazards model demonstrated no significant difference between groups for GTT (rate ratio 1.03, 95% CI 0.71-1.51, P = 0.87) or SBTT (rate ratio 1.02, 95% CI 0.70-1.49, P = 0.93). Although the taste of bacon was considered favorably by 72% of participants, taste did not correlate with GTT (ρ = 0.03, P = 0.83) or SBTT (ρ = - 0.115, P = 0.33). The CER was 91 and 95% in the bacon and control groups, respectively (P = 0.35).

CONCLUSION

Bacon sham feeding has no effect on GTT, SBTT or CER and cannot be recommended in clinical practice.

Effects of taste stimulation on gastric myoelectrical activity and autonomic balance

BACKGROUND/AIM

Sham feeding, reproducing the cephalic phase of digestion, and involving combined visual, olfactory, and taste stimulation affects gastrointestinal motility and secretory functions of the digestive system, as well as the sympathetic/parasympathetic balance (SPB). In this study, we aimed to check if taste stimulation with a single flavor affects the gastric myoelectrical activity (GMA) and/or SPB.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Eighteen healthy volunteers underwent, on four separate days, 30-min electrogastrographic and electrocardiographic recordings: basal, with stimulation - while keeping in the mouth an agar cube with taste-delivering substance, and postexposure. Concentrations of saccharose, NaCl, citric acid, and quinine hydrochloride within the cubes were adjusted to 100-fold the individual taste recognition thresholds. SPB was determined from the heart rate variability (HRV) analysis of the recorded electrocardiograms.

RESULTS

A moderate but statistically significant increase in tachygastria and bradygastria percentage time share was observed, regardless of the type of taste applied. Bitter taste elicited a considerable decrease in the normogastria time share (from 82.8 ± 2.5% to 73.5 ± 3.5%, P = 0.00076) and a diminution of the dominant frequency (from 3.07 ± 0.08 to 2.90 ± 0.10 cycles per minute (cpm) postexposure, P = 0.01). Sour taste brought about a drop of the dominant power (from 42.5 ± 1.1 to 40.1 ± 1.4 dB, P = 0.0015). Two tastes hindered propagation of the gastric slow waves - the average percentage of slow wave coupling decreased from 77.9 ± 3.1% to 69.5 ± 3.1% (P = 0.0078) and from 74.6 ± 2.5% to 68.2 ± 2.8% (P = 0.0054) with the bitter and the salty taste, respectively. Stimulation with sweet, salty, or sour taste evoked a significant decrease in the high frequency component of the HRV, whereas bitter taste did not affect the SPB.

CONCLUSIONS

Oral stimulation with tastes subjectively perceived as unpleasant brings about disturbances of the interdigestive GMA. This, however, does not coincide with its effect upon SPB.

The cephalic phase insulin response to nutritive and low-calorie sweeteners in solid and beverage form

The purpose of the study was to examine the role of the cephalic phase insulin response (CPIR) following exposure to nutritive and low-calorie sweeteners in solid and beverage form in overweight and obese adults. In addition, the role of learning on the CPIR to nutritive and low-calorie sweetener exposure was tested. Sixty-four overweight and obese adults (age: 18-50years, BMI: 24-37kg/m2, body fat percentage>25% for men and >32% for women) were sham-fed (at 2-minute intervals for 14min) a randomly assigned test load comprised of a nutritive (sucrose) or low-calorie sweetener (sucralose) in beverage or solid form in phase 1 of the study. A 2-3ml blood sample was collected before and 2, 6, 10, 14, 61, 91 and 121min after oral exposure for serum insulin and glucose analysis. During phase 2, participants underwent a 2-week training period to facilitate associative learning between the sensory properties of test loads and their post-ingestive effects. In phase 3, participants were retested for their cephalic phase responses as in phase 1. Participants were classified as responders if they demonstrated a positive insulin response (rise of serum insulin above baseline i.e. Δ insulin) 2min post-stimulus in phase 1. Among responders exposed to the same sweetener in Phases 1 and 3, the proportion of participants that displayed a rise of insulin with oral exposure to sucralose was significantly greater when the stimulus was in the solid form compared to the beverage form. Sucralose and sucrose exposure elicited similarly significant increases in serum insulin 2min after exposure and significant decreases after 2min in responders in both food forms. The solid food form elicited greater CPIR over 2, 6 and 10min than the beverage form. There was no effect of learning on insulin responses after training. The results indicate the presence of a significant CPIR in a subset of individuals with overweight or obesity after oral exposure to sucralose, especially when present in solid food form. Future studies must confirm the reliability of this response.

Impaired gastric response to modified sham feeding in patients with postprandial distress syndrome

BACKGROUND

Impaired vagal function has been reported to be important in some patients with functional dyspepsia (FD). However, the pathophysiologic mechanisms influencing the cephalic phase of vagal activity in FD are incompletely understood. The aim of this study was to investigate the gastric response to modified sham feeding (MSF) on ultrasound and cardiovascular autonomic function in FD patients.

METHODS

Nineteen patients with postprandial distress syndrome (PDS, 11 men and eight women; mean age: 48.2 years) and 26 healthy subjects (HS, 13 men and 13 women; mean age: 45.0 years) were studied prospectively. Firstly, cardiovascular autonomic function was assessed by spectral analysis of RR interval variability. Antral contraction was then evaluated by ultrasonography after MSF was performed to stimulate the cephalic phase of vagal activity.

KEY RESULTS

Spectral analysis of RR interval variability showed that the high-frequency component was significantly smaller in the patients than in the HS (P<0.01). The frequency of antral contraction in response to MSF over 15 min was also significantly lower in the PDS patients than in the HS. The 15-min integrated antral contractile response (area under the contraction vs time curve) was significantly smaller in the PDS patients than in the HS (P<0.01). Univariate analysis revealed a modest correlation between the high-frequency component of RR interval variability and the area under the contraction vs time curve (n=46, r=0.49, P<0.01).

CONCLUSIONS & INFERENCES

Autonomic abnormalities affecting the cephalic phase of vagal activity may be important in the pathogenesis of FD.

Chewing and taste increase blood velocity in the celiac but not the superior mesenteric arteries

To investigate the role of chewing and taste in the meal-induced rapid increase in splanchnic blood flow, we compared the blood flow responses in the celiac artery (CA) and superior mesenteric artery (SMA) to chewing solid food with a chocolate taste (FOOD) and paraffin wax without taste (WAX). After 5 min of baseline measurement, 15 healthy subjects repeated chewing and expectorating the FOOD or WAX every 20 s for 4 min followed by 10 min of recovery measurement. We measured the mean blood velocity (MBV) in the CA and SMA. The baseline MBVs in the CA and SMA did not differ between the FOOD and WAX trials. The MBV in the CA was lower than baseline at the 1st min of chewing in both trials. It was higher than baseline at the 3rd min of FOOD chewing, whereas it did not increase during and after WAX chewing. The MBV in the CA was higher in the FOOD trial than in the WAX trial at the 3rd min of chewing and thereafter. In contrast, the MBV in the SMA did not change throughout the protocols. These results suggest that the taste of food plays a role in meal-induced hyperemia in the CA but not the SMA.

Blood flow responses in celiac and superior mesenteric arteries in the initial phase of digestion

Blood flow (BF) responses in the celiac artery (CA) and superior mesenteric artery (SMA) during and immediately after a meal are poorly understood. We characterized postprandial BF responses in these arteries in the initial phase of digestion. After a baseline measurement in the overnight fasting state, healthy subjects ingested solid food (300 kcal) and water ad libitum within 5 min (4.6 +/- 0.2 min, means +/- SE), and then rested for 60 min in the postprandial state. Mean blood velocities (MBVs) in CA (n = 7) and SMA (n = 9) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were measured throughout the procedure. The MAP was divided by the MBV to yield the resistance index (RI). The MBV in CA and SMA started increasing within a minute after beginning the meal. The MBV in CA rapidly reached its peak increase (60 +/- 8% change from baseline) at 5 +/- 1 min after the start of the meal, whereas the MBV in SMA gradually reached its peak increase (134 +/- 14%) at 41 +/- 4 min after the start of the meal, reflecting a decrease in the RI for both CA and SMA. These findings suggested an earlier increase in CA and SMA MBV, implying that the increase of BF in some parts of the small intestine precedes the arrival of chyme.

Investigation into the role of cephalic stimulation of acid secretion on gastric emptying and appetite following a soup meal using the gastric acid inhibitor omeprazole

We previously showed that oral administration of a liquid soup preload was associated with a slower rate of gastric emptying and suppressed appetite more compared with intragastric administration of the same soup [Appetite 31(1998)377]. The present study was designed to investigate whether these results could be explained by the cephalic stimulation of acid secretion induced by oral administration. Eight healthy male subjects took part in a double-blind placebo controlled study comparing the effects of omeprazole and placebo on gastric emptying, appetite ratings and subsequent food intake following the ingestion of a liquid soup. Subjects were administered with a single oral dose of 80 mg omeprazole or placebo 3 h prior to ingesting the radiolabelled soup preload (400 kcal; 425 ml) over 15 min. Ratings of hunger, desire to eat and fullness were recorded over 135 min and gastric emptying was measured by scintigraphy. Food intake was evaluated from a test meal (yoghurt drink) given 120 min after the end of the soup ingestion. Analysis of data showed that there was no significant difference between omeprazole and placebo in gastric emptying, appetite or subsequent energy intake from the test meal. The results suggest that gastric acid secretion is not responsible for the differences in gastric emptying and appetite observed between intragastrically infused and orally administered soup preloads.

Xenin plasma concentrations during modified sham feeding and during meals of different composition demonstrated by radioimmunoassay and chromatography

Xenin is a 25 amino acid peptide produced by specific endocrine cells of the duodenal mucosa. Xenin has multiple biological actions in the gastrointestinal tract. It modulates intestinal motility, affects exocrine pancreatic secretion, and gastric secretion of acid. In the present investigation, we studied plasma concentration of xenin in volunteers after modified sham feeding and after meals of different composition. Plasma xenin concentrations were determined by radioimmunoassay in unextracted plasmas and after acidic extraction using C-18 Sep-Pak chromatography and after neutral extraction using affinity filtration. Both extraction methods were followed by C 18 r.p. HPLC chromatography. Xenin plasma concentrations in unextracted and in extracted plasma rose significantly after modified sham feeding when the food was brought to the volunteers from another room immediately before sham feeding started. When the volunteers had the opportunity to observe the preparation of the meal, xenin plasma concentrations during fasting were high and no further rise was observed after sham feeding. Isocaloric feeding resulted in elevated xenin concentrations in unextracted plasma and after high-pressure liquid chromatography. The methods of extraction, acidic or neutral, did not affect the results.

CONCLUSION

Cephalic factors, investigated by modified sham feeding, stimulate release of xenin into the circulation. Xenin may participate in the central nervous regulation of gastrointestinal function.

Gastric myoelectrical activity in neonates of different gestational ages by means of electrogastrography

PURPOSE

to describe the patterns of the gastric myoelectrical activity, pre-and postprandially, in clinically stable neonates of different gestational ages, during their first two weeks of life by means of Electrogastrography.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Electrogastrography was recorded in forty-five clinically stable neonates of different gestational ages (group I: 15 neonates of > 37 weeks, group II: 15 premature neonates of 32-37 weeks; Group III: 15 premature neonates of 28-31 weeks) receiving intermittent enteral feedings during their first two weeks of life. Electrogastrography recordings were performed for 1 hour pre-and postprandially. The Electrogastrography signal was recorded using the portable MicroDigitrapper Electrogastrography recording device and after motion artifacts were deleted, the remaining Electrogastrography data were submitted to quantitative analysis based on the "Running Spectrum Analysis".

RESULTS

The percentages of normogastria, pre-and postprandially were greater than the percentages of gastric dysrythmias in all three studied groups. Furthermore, all neonates had the mean values of the Electrogastrography dominant frequency predominantly within the normogastria range, in both periods analyzed. There were no significant differences in the relative change of the Electrogastrography dominant power among the groups.

CONCLUSION

This study demonstrates that the Electrogastrography patterns are similar between premature and full term neonates during the pre-and postprandial periods. The results of this study also indicate that the gastric myoelectrical activity in premature and full term neonates is immature, as compared to that described for older neonates, children and adults.

Influence of various feeding conditions, the migrating myoelectric complex and cholinergic drugs on antral slow waves in sheep

The presented study was designed to elucidate whether the cholinergic mechanisms control ovine antral slow waves in various physiological conditions, including feeding and various phases of migrating myoelectric complex (MMC). The investigations were carried out on six adult sheep of Polish Merino breed with seven bipolar electrodes surgically implanted onto the antral and small intestinal wall. In the course of chronic experiments, the myoelectric activity was recorded from these regions using the multichannel electroencephalograph. Experiments were performed on 48 h fasted and non-fasted animals. During some of these experiments, sheep were fed with standard fodder. During control experiments 0.15 M NaCl was slowly administered i.v. through the indwelling catheter and during other experiment, hexamethonium bromide (2.0 and 5.0 mg/kg). atropine sulfate (0.02; 0.1; 0.5 and 1.5 mg/kg) and pirenzepine dihydrochloride (0.02; 0.5 and 2.0 mg/kg) were administered i.v. during phase 1-2a or 2b MMC. The drugs were also given in combinations. The recordings were analysed and the antral slow wave amplitudes and frequencies were calculated. Unlike the slow wave amplitude, either feeding or the anticholinergic drugs significantly increased slow wave frequency, especially when the given procedure was started during phase 2b MMC. The most pronounced effects were observed after hexamethonium given alone or in combinations. Thus, the cholinergic system modulates antral slow wave frequency in sheep.

Electrogastrographic norms in children: toward the development of standard methods, reproducible results, and reliable normative data

BACKGROUND

Surface electrogastrography (EGG) is a noninvasive technique that detects gastric myoelectrical electric activity, principally the underlying pacemaker activity generated by the specialized interstitial cells of Cajal. Interest in the use of this methodology has grown because of its potential applications in describing functional gastrointestinal disorders, particularly as a tool in the evaluation of nausea, anorexia, and other dyspeptic symptoms.

METHODS

Fifty-five healthy volunteers (27 female), ranging in age from 6 to 18 years (mean, 11.7 years), were studied for a 1-hour baseline preprandial period and a 1-hour postprandial period after consumption of a standard 448-kcal meal. Recordings were obtained with an EGG Digitrapper or modified Polygraph (Medtronic-Synectics, Shoreview, MN). Spectral analysis by an autoregressive moving average method was used to extract numerical data on the power and frequency of gastric electrical activity from the EGG signal.

RESULTS

The authors present normative data for healthy children and adolescents studied under a standardized protocol. Mean dominant frequency was found to be 2.9 +/- 0.40 cycles per minute preprandially and 3.1 +/- 0.35 postprandially, with 80% +/- 13% of test time spent in the normogastric range (2-4 cycles per minute) before and 85% +/- 11% after the test meal. The response of several key parameters to meal consumption was considered, and the effects of age, gender, and body mass index (BMI) on the EGG were sought.

CONCLUSIONS

There is a postprandial increase in the rhythmicity and amplitude of gastric slow waves, as other investigators have shown in adults. Key normative values are not dependent on age, gender, or BMI. The authors discuss limitations in the data set and its interpretability. The authors establish a normative data set after developing a standardized recording protocol and test meal and show that EGG recordings can be obtained reliably in the pediatric population. Development of similar norms by investigators using the EGG is crucial for future exploration of the validity and clinical application of the EGG. Differences in test conditions of signal detection and analytic methods influence EGG results substantially, and caution should be used when comparing results across centers.

Electrogastrography: a non-invasive measurement of gastric function

BACKGROUND

Electrogastrography (EGG) is the non-invasive measurement of gastric electrical activity. With the development of modern technology, improved recording and automated analysis, it is a reliable and accurate technique for the measurement of gastric myoelectrical activity providing information about the frequency and regularity of the gastric slow wave.

AIM

The aim of this report is to evaluate its role in clinical practice.

METHODS

The literature is reviewed and its role investigated.

RESULTS

EGG has been successfully used in the investigation of gastroparesis, non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD), gastric emptying (GE) disorders and diabetes mellitus (DM). EGG also provides an insight into the effect of medications on gastric function, e.g. edrophonium, cisapride, erythromycin and proton-pump inhibitors (PPI).

CONCLUSIONS

EGG has a developing role in the assessment of gastric dysfunction and on the effect of medical treatment. The effect of surgery and anaesthesia on gastric myoelectric activity is less clear.

The stomach's response to unappetizing food: cephalic-vagal effects on gastric myoelectric activity

The aim of this investigation was to determine the effects of sham feeding food that was perceived as unappetizing on the cephalic-vagal reflex as measured by changes in gastric myoelectric activity. Thirty-eight healthy human participants experienced one of two conditions: (i) an appetizing sham feeding condition in which participants chewed and expectorated two cooked frankfurters, and (ii) an unappetizing sham-feeding condition in which participants chewed and expectorated two cold tofu frankfurters. All participants were asked to chew each mouth-full of food 6-7 times and to be very careful not to swallow any of the food. Electrogastrograms (EGGs) were recorded for 10 min prior to, during, and for 15 min after sham feeding. A questionnaire was given to each participant after the procedure as a manipulation check and to assess food palatability. Results from the questionnaire showed, as expected, that the cooked frankfurters were significantly more appetizing than the cold tofu frankfurters (P < 0.01). In the group sham fed appetizing food, 3 cycles per minute (cpm) power increased during sham feeding, but the change was not significant; however, 3 cpm power decreased in the group sham fed unappetizing food. This difference was significant (P < 0.05). In conclusion, we have demonstrated that the cephalic-vagal reflex, as measured by power in the 3 cpm frequency region of the EGG, is sensitive to the subjective palatability of the food.

Nutritional implications of cephalic phase gastrointestinal responses

Palatable cephalic stimuli induce a simultaneous activation of gastrointestinal motility, gastric acid and pancreatic enzyme secretion, as well as, release of the gastrointestinal hormones gastrin and pancreatic polypeptide. Cholinergic neural input is the dominant mediator of these responses with cholecystokinin and gastrin acting as additional stimulatory modulators. Central cholinergic circuits, neuropeptide Y, and thyrotropin releasing hormone are candidate central stimulators of the cephalic phase. There are good arguments for glucagon-like peptide-1 and peptide YY to be physiological inhibitors of cephalic-phase responses with these peptides being released in the intestinal phase of digestion and putatively contributing to termination of the cephalically stimulated pattern. Cephalic-phase responses are used clinically as diagnostic tests to assess completeness of selective proximal vagotomy and to explore autonomic neuropathy. Pancreatic polypeptide secretion with sham feeding is an appropriate test of abdominal vagal function. Cephalically stimulated motor and secretory activity contribute greater than 50% of overall postprandial responses. Pharmacological inhibition of cephalic-vagal stimulation, resulting in reduced food intake, may be a novel approach to obesity management. Glucagon-like peptide-1 is a particular candidate because it inhibits the cephalic phase of digestion, diminishes food intake, and reduces the glycemic excursion after a meal by retarding gastric emptying, stimulating insulin and lowering glucagon release.

Gastric myoelectrical activity in patients with cervical spinal cord injury

OBJECTIVE

Dyspeptic symptoms are common in patients with cervical spinal cord injury (SCI). The supraspinal control of sympathetic innervation to the stomach is interrupted in these patients. Gastric emptying has been reported to be delayed in some patients with cervical SCI. Gastric myoelectrical activity is known to regulate gastric motility and is correlated with gastric emptying. The change in gastric myoelectrical activity after cervical SCI is unknown; our aim was to investigate it.

METHODS

The study was performed in 12 cervical SCI patients and 14 healthy controls. Gastric myoelectrical activity was recorded using surface electrogastrography for 30 min in the fasting state and 1 h after a standard test meal. Spectral analysis was performed to compute the following parameters from the electrogastrogram; investigated were the percentage of 2-4 cycles/min (cpm) slow waves, the instability coefficient (IC) of the dominant frequency, the postprandial increment of dominant frequency (deltaF), and its power (deltaP).

RESULTS

In both fasting and fed states, regular and stable gastric slow waves were observed in both the control group and patients with cervical SCI. The percentage of normal 2-4 cpm slow waves (preprandial, 80.7+/-3.6% vs 91.5+/-3.7%, p > 0.05; postprandial, 82.0+/-4.4% vs 87.2+/-4.2%, p > 0.05) and IC (preprandial, 0.19+/-0.04% vs 0.28+/-0.05%; postprandial, 0.24+/-0.04% vs 0.27+/-0.02%, p > 0.05) were not significantly different between the two groups. The dominant frequency and its power were also similar between the two groups, no matter whether in the fast (frequency, 2.92+/-0.3 vs 2.93+/-0.06 cpm; power, 30.05+/-1.29 vs 29.08+/-1.23 dB, p > 0.05) or fed (frequency, 3.17+/-0.07 vs 3.02+/-0.06 cpm; power, 32.55+/-0.90 vs 32.07+/-1.18 dB,p > 0.05) state. The postprandial response measured by deltaF (0.25+/-0.09 vs 0.09+/-0.07 cpm, p > 0.05) and deltaP (2.52+/-1.10 vs 2.24+/-1.20 dB, p > 0.05) were also similar between the two groups.

CONCLUSION

Gastric myoelectrical activity was not altered after cervical SCI.
