Many-body analysis and spectroscopic characterization of diazene oligomers: A theoretical study

The present study reports the many-body analysis and spectroscopic characterization of linear and cyclic diazene oligomers in gas and water solvent states. The oligomers of diazene from monomer to pentamer have been considered for the study. The spectroscopic studies such as geometrical parameters, infrared spectra, electronic absorption spectra, and natural transition orbitals (NTOs) were reported. Many-body analysis techniques have been implemented to study the interactions among the diazene oligomers. These calculations have been performed using exchange and correlation functional (B3LYP) and 6-311++G (d,p) basis set. The geometrical parameters and infrared modes of monomer diazene in the gas state are well-matched with the available experimental determinations at this level of theory. A significant change in vibrational modes of linear and cyclic diazene oligomers has been observed in the gas phase-to-water solvent state. The time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) has been used to calculate the electronic absorption spectra of diazene oligomers. The Wavelength of electronic transitions, oscillator strength, and HOMO to LUMO gap has been reported. Many-body analysis shows that two-, three-, four-, and five-body energies have a remarkable contribution to the binding energy in addition to relaxation energies. All these calculations have been performed using Gaussian 16 program package.

Uncovering Redox Non-innocent Hydrogen-Bonding in Cu(I)-Diazene Complexes

The life-sustaining reduction of N₂ to NH₃ is thermoneutral yet kinetically challenged by high-energy intermediates such as N₂H₂. Exploring intramolecular H-bonding as a potential strategy to stabilize diazene intermediates, we employ a series of [^xHetTpCu]₂(μ-N₂H₂) complexes that exhibit H-bonding between pendant aromatic N-heterocycles (^xHet) such as pyridine and a bridging trans-N₂H₂ ligand at copper(I) centers. X-ray crystallography and IR spectroscopy clearly reveal H-bonding in [^pyMeTpCu]₂(μ-N₂H₂) while low-temperature ¹H NMR studies coupled with DFT analysis reveals a dynamic equilibrium between two closely related, symmetric H-bonded structural motifs. Importantly, the ^xHet pendant negligibly influences the electronic structure of ^xHetTpCu^I centers in ^xHetTpCu(CNAr^2,6-Me₂) complexes that lack H-bonding as judged by nearly indistinguishable ν(CN) frequencies (2113-2117 cm^-1). Nonetheless, H-bonding in the corresponding [^xHetTpCu]₂(μ-N₂H₂) complexes results in marked changes in ν(NN) (1398-1419 cm^-1) revealed through resonance Raman studies. Due to the closely matched N-H BDEs of N₂H₂ and the pyH⁰ cation radical, the aromatic N-heterocyclic pendants may encourage partial H-atom transfer (HAT) from N₂H₂ to ^xHet through redox-non-innocent H-bonding in [^xHetTpCu]₂(μ-N₂H₂). DFT studies reveal modest thermodynamic barriers for concerted transfer of both H-atoms of coordinated N₂H₂ to the ^xHet pendants to generate tautomeric [^xHetHTpCu]₂(μ-N₂) complexes, identifying metal-assisted concerted dual HAT as a thermodynamically favorable pathway for N₂/N₂H₂ interconversion.

Theoretical investigation of the isomerization pathways of diazenes: torsion vs. inversion

Diazenes are an important family of organic compounds used widely in synthetic and materials chemistry. These molecules have a planar geometry and exhibit cis-trans isomerization. The simplest of all these molecules - diazene (N2H2) - has been subjected to several experimental and theoretical studies. Two mechanisms have been proposed for the cis-trans isomerization of diazene, which are an in-plane inversion and an out-of-plane torsion. The activation energies for these pathways are similar and the competition between these two mechanisms has been discussed in the literature based on electronic structure theory calculations. Three decades ago, a classical dynamics investigation of diazene isomerization was carried out using a model Hamiltonian and it was indicated that the in-plane inversion is forbidden classically because of a centrifugal barrier and the out-of-plane torsion is the only isomerization pathway. In the present work, we investigated the cis-trans isomerization dynamics of diazene using ab initio classical trajectory simulations at the CASSCF(2,2)/aug-cc-pVDZ level of electronic structure theory. The simulation results confirmed the presence of the aforementioned centrifugal barrier for the inversion and torsion was the only observed pathway. The calculations were repeated for a similar system (difluorodiazene, N2F2) and again the centrifugal barrier prevented the inversion pathway.

The Hunt for Elusive Molecules: Insights from Joint Theoretical and Experimental Investigations

Rotational spectroscopy is an invaluable tool to unambiguously determine the molecular structure of a species, and sometimes even to establish its very existence. This article illustrates how experimental and theoretical state-of-the-art tools can be used in tandem to investigate the rotational structure of molecules, with particular emphasis on those that have long remained elusive. The examples of three emblematic species-gauche-butadiene, disilicon carbide, and germanium dicarbide-highlight the close, mutually beneficial interaction between high-level theoretical calculations and sensitive microwave measurements. Prospects to detect other elusive molecules of chemical and astronomical interest are discussed.

Combined Electron-Diffraction, Spectroscopic, and Theoretical Determination of the Structure of N-Deuterio- trans-Methyldiazene, CH3N═ND. Conformational Effects of the N═N Double Bond

Gas phase electron-diffraction (GED) data obtained at a nozzle-tip temperature of 273 K have been combined with spectroscopic vibrational-rotational constants to determine the structure of trans-methyldiazene, an important prototype for the N═N double bond. The N-deuterio form CH₃N═ND was used in the study since it is appreciably more stable than CH₃N═NH. Both the theoretical and experimental results are consistent with a planar C _s trans-CNND framework. The experimental results ( r_α⁰/ r_g²⁷³) are 1.465(2)/1.467(2) Å for the CN bond, 1.248(1)/1.251(1) Å for the N═N double bond, and 1.037(17)/1.048(17) Å for the ND bond. The NND angle is 105.9(20)/105.6(20)° and the CNN angle is 112.4(5)/112.2(5)°, where the uncertainties in parentheses are twice the standard deviation from a simultaneous least-squares fit of the GED and microwave data. For the methyl group, both theory and experiment indicate that two CH bonds are symmetrically arranged out of the molecular plane while the third CH' lies in the plane in an eclipsed (not staggered) cis-H'CNN arrangement. Theoretical calculations (B3LYP/cc-PVnZ and CCSD(T)/cc-PVnZ) suggest a slight distortion of the methyl group, with a tilt of the methyl top axis about 5° away from the N═N bond. The experimental data are consistent with this picture but are equally consistent with an undistorted methyl group. Inclusion of distortions predicted by theory in a complete basis set limit (CBS) lead to a preferred analysis with average values of 1.086(5)/1.106(5) Å for the CH bond length and an average HCH angle of 108.3(8)/107.8(8)°. Features of the structure of methyldiazene and related compounds are discussed. It is found that the short N═N bond length in the diazenes produces much greater steric repulsion than in analogous ethylene compounds and this effect leads to some interesting conformational and distortion differences for attached CH₃ groups.

Pentamethylcyclopentadienyl Half-Sandwich Diazoalkane Complexes of Ruthenium: Preparation and Reactivity

The diazoalkane complexes [Ru(η(5)-C5Me5)(N2CAr1Ar2){P(OR)3}L]BPh4 (1-4) [R = Me, L = P(OMe)3 (1); R = Et, L = P(OEt)3 (2); R = Me, L = PPh3 (3); R = Et, L = PPh3 (4); Ar1 = Ar2 = Ph (a); Ar1 = Ph, Ar2 = p-tolyl (b); Ar1Ar2 = C12H8 (c); Ar1 = Ph, Ar2 = PhC(O) (d)] and [Ru(η(5)-C5Me5){N2C(C12H8)}{PPh(OEt)2}(PPh3)]BPh4 (5c) were prepared by allowing chloro-compounds RuCl(η(5)-C5Me5)[P(OR)3]L to react with the diazoalkane Ar1Ar2CN2 in the presence of NaBPh4. Treatment of complexes 1-4 with H2O afforded 1,2-diazene derivatives [Ru(η(5)-C5Me5)(η(2)-NH═NH){P(OR)3}L]BPh4 (6-9) and ketone Ar1Ar2CO. A reaction path involving nucleophilic attack by H2O on the coordinated diazoalkane is proposed and supported by density functional theory calculations. The complexes were characterized spectroscopically (IR and (1)H, (31)P, (13)C, (15)N NMR) and by X-ray crystal structure determination of [Ru(η(5)-C5Me5)(N2CC12H8){P(OEt)3}2]BPh4 (2c) and [Ru(η(5)-C5Me5)(η(2)-NH═NH){P(OEt)3}2]BPh4 (7).

Hydrolysis of coordinated diazoalkanes to yield side-on 1,2-diazene derivatives

Diazoalkane complexes [Ru(η(5)-C5Me5)(N2CAr1Ar2)(PPh3){P(OR)3}]BPh4 [R = Me (1), Et (2); Ar1 = Ar2 = Ph (a); Ar1 = Ph, Ar2 = p-tolyl (b); Ar1Ar2 = C12H8 (c)] were prepared by allowing chloro complexes RuCl(η(5)-C5Me5)(PPh3)[P(OR)3] to react with diazoalkane Ar1Ar2CN2 in ethanol. The treatment of compounds 1 and 2 with H2O afforded 1,2-diazene derivatives [Ru(η(5)-C5Me5)(η(2)-NH═NH)(PPh3){P(OR)3}]BPh4 (3 and 4) and ketone Ar1Ar2CO. Luminescence and ESR studies of relationships between O(-)-centres and structural iron in natural and synthetically hydrated kaolinites

Luminescence, induced by dehydration and by wetting with hydrazine and unsymmetrically substituted hydrazine, and related ESR spectra have been observed from several kaolinites, synthetically hydrated kaolinites, and metahalloysites. The amine-wetting luminescence results suggest that intercalation, not a chemiluminescence reaction, is the luminescence trigger. Correlation between hydration-induced luminescence and g = 2 ESR signals associated with O(-)-centres in several natural halloysites, and concurrent diminution of the intensity of both these signal types as a function of aging in two 8.4 angstroms synthetically hydrated, kaolinites, confirm a previously-reported relationship between the luminescence induced by dehydration and in the presence of O(-)-centres (holes, i.e., electron vacancies) in the tetrahedral sheet. Furthermore, the ESR spectra of the 8.4 angstroms hydrate showed a concurrent change in the line shape of the g = 4 signal from a shape usually associated with structural Fe in an ordered kaolinite, to a simpler one typically observed in more disordered kaolinite, halloysite, and montmorillonite. Either structural Fe centres and the O(-)-centres interact, or both are subject to factors previously associated with degree of order. The results question the long-term stability of the 8.4 angstroms hydrate, although XRD does not indicate interlayer collapse over this period. Complex inter-relationships are shown between intercalation, stored energy, structural Fe, and the degree of hydration which may be reflected in catalytic as well as spectroscopic properties of the clays.
