Abstract
The presented study was designed to probe the toxicity potential of newly identified compound naphthalen-2-yl 3,5-dinitrobenzoate (SF1). Acute, subacute toxicity and teratogenicity studies were performed as per Organization of economic cooperation and development (OECD) 425, 407, and 414 test guidelines, respectively. An oral dose of 2000 mg/kg to rats for acute toxicity. Furthermore, 5, 10, 20, and 40 mg/kg doses were administered once daily for 28 days in subacute toxicity study. Teratogenicity study was performed with 40 mg/kg due to its excellent anti-Alzheimer results at this dose. SF1 induced a significant rise in Alkaline Phosphatases (ALP), bilirubin, white blood cells (WBC), and lymphocyte levels with a decrease in platelet count. Furthermore, the reduction in urea, uric acid, and aspartate transaminase (AST) levels and an increase in total protein levels were measured in subacute toxicity. SF1 increased spermatogenesis at 5 and 10 mg/kg doses. Teratogenicity study depicted no resorptions, early abortions, cleft palate, spina bifida and any skeletal abnormalities in the fetuses. Oxidative stress markers (Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT), and glutathione (GSH) were increased in all the experiments, whereas the effect on melanoaldehyde Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels was variable. Histopathology further corroborated these results with no change in the architectures of selected organs. Consequently, a 2000 mg/kg dose of SF1 tends to induce minor liver dysfunction along with immunomodulation, and it is well below its LD 50 . Moreover, it can be safely used in pregnancy owing to its no detectable teratogenicity.

Abstract
Homosalate (HMS) and 2-ethylhexyl 4-dimethylaminobenzoate (OD-PABA) are ultraviolet filters. We aimed to investigate the effects of dermal exposure to HMS and OD-PABA during the prenatal, lactation, and early infancy periods on pubertal development and thyroid function in male and female rats. The thyroid glands, uteri, testes, prostate glands, and seminal vesicles were excised and weighed, the reproductive organs were analyzed histologically, and the serum hormone levels were measured. In the prenatal period, the thyroxine (T4) levels increased in the female rats in the exposed groups ( p < 0.05); the thyroid weights, reproductive organ weights, and gonadal hormone levels were not altered. In males, the testosterone levels decreased ( p < 0.05), but the thyroid weights, T4 levels, prostate, and testis weights were not changed. In the lactation period, the weights of the thyroid glands increased in the exposed female groups ( p < 0.05), but the T4, gonadal hormone levels, and reproductive organ weights were not changed. In the males, the thyroid gland weights, T4 levels, reproductive organ weights, and gonadal hormone levels were not changed. During infancy, the thyroid gland weights increased in the female rats in the exposed groups ( p < 0.05), but the T4 levels, gonadal hormone levels, and reproductive organ weights were not affected. In the male rats in the exposed groups, the T4 levels were increased ( p < 0.05), but the thyroid and reproductive organ weights, gonadal hormone levels were not affected. Organ histopathology was not affected in all groups. HMS and OD-PABA do not have endocrine disruptor effects on thyroid function and the pubertal development of female and male rats.

Abstract
Phenol is a common substance present in many industrial wastewaters and in nonspecific pesticides. Due to its solubility and volatility phenol is often found in marine and freshwater environment. It is lipophilic compound and has a high potential for accumulating along the trophic chain. Phenol thus is not only a threat to natural environment but also to human health. The effects of phenol on the secretion of 17β-estradiol were examined in female common carp Cyprinus carpio. Vitellogenic stage fish were exposed to physiological safe dose of phenol for 0, 24, 48 and 96 h. In the in vitro experiments, vitellogenic follicles were incubated with phenol and dose- and time-course effects on leuteinising hormone (LH) induced steroid production were examined. Exposure of fish with phenol gradually attenuated serum and ovarian 17β-estradiol levels with increasing time and maximum inhibition was noticed after 96 h. Administration of phenol significantly inhibited LH-induced secretion of 17β-estradiol by the ovarian follicles in vitro. To clarify the mechanism of attenuated production of 17β-estradiol in phenol-treated follicles, stimulated by LH, in vitro effect phenol and LH on aromatase activity (conversion of testosterone to 17β-estradiol) and cytochrome P450arom gene expression in carp ovarian follicles were investigated. Physiological safe dose of phenol significantly inhibited LH-stimulated aromatase activity and P450arom gene expression in ovarian follicles. The present study further demonstrated that LH-induced activation of ovarian steroidogenic factor-1 (SF-1) is strongly inhibited by phenol treatment. These results suggest that physiological safe dose of phenol as endocrine disruption (ED) potential and the effect can be mediated via several cellular pathways including the inhibition of SF-1 activity, aromatase activity and P450arom gene expression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The debate regarding dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) in malaria prevention and human health is polarized and can be classified into three positions: anti-DDT, centrist-DDT, pro-DDT. OBJECTIVE We attempted to arrive at a synthesis by matching a series of questions on the use of DDT for indoor residual spraying (IRS) with literature and insights, and to identify options and opportunities. DISCUSSION Overall, community health is significantly improved through all available malaria control measures, which include IRS with DDT. Is DDT "good"? Yes, because it has saved many lives. Is DDT safe as used in IRS? Recent publications have increasingly raised concerns about the health implications of DDT. Therefore, an unqualified statement that DDT used in IRS is safe is untenable. Are inhabitants and applicators exposed? Yes, and to high levels. Should DDT be used? The fact that DDT is "good" because it saves lives, and "not safe" because it has health and environmental consequences, raises ethical issues. The evidence of adverse human health effects due to DDT is mounting. However, under certain circumstances, malaria control using DDT cannot yet be halted. Therefore, the continued use of DDT poses a paradox recognized by a centrist-DDT position. At the very least, it is now time to invoke precaution. Precautionary actions could include use and exposure reduction. CONCLUSIONS There are situations where DDT will provide the best achievable health benefit, but maintaining that DDT is safe ignores the cumulative indications of many studies. In such situations, addressing the paradox from a centrist-DDT position and invoking precaution will help design choices for healthier lives.

Abstract
Since bisphenol F (4,4'-dihydroxydiphenylmethane) has been reported to exhibit estrogen agonistic properties in the uterotrophic assay, we performed a 28-day repeated-dose toxicity study (enhanced OECD test guideline No. 407) on bisphenol F based on the OECD draft protocols to determine whether it has endocrine-mediated properties. Bisphenol F was orally administered at doses 0, 20, 100 and 500 mg/kg per day for at least 28 days, but no clear endocrine-mediated changes were detected, and it was concluded to have no endocrine-mediated effects in young adult rats. On the other hand, the main effect of bisphenol F was concluded to be liver toxicity based on clinical biochemical parameters and liver weight, but without histopathological changes. The no-observed-effect level for bisphenol F is concluded to be under 20 mg/kg per day since decreased body weight accompanied by decreased serum total cholesterol, glucose, and albumin values were observed in the female rats given 20 mg/kg per day or higher doses of bisphenol F.
