Direct determination of copper in urine using a sol–gel optical sensor coupled to a multicommutated flow system

4-(2-Pyridylazo)-resorcinol Functionalized Thermosensitive Ionic Microgels for Optical Detection of Heavy Metal Ions at Nanomolar Level

4-(2-Pyridylazo)-resorcinol (PAR) functionalized thermosensitive ionic microgels (PAR-MG) were synthesized by a one-pot quaternization method. The PAR-MG microgels were spherical in shape with radius of ca. 166.0 nm and narrow size distribution and exhibited thermo-sensitivity in aqueous solution. The PAR-MG microgels could optically detect trace heavy metal ions, such as Cu(2+), Mn(2+), Pb(2+), Zn(2+), and Ni(2+), in aqueous solutions with high selectivity and sensitivity. The PAR-MG microgel suspensions exhibited characteristic color with the presence of various trace heavy metal ions, which could be visually distinguished by naked eyes. The limit of colorimetric detection (DL) was determined to be 38 nM for Cu(2+) at pH 3, 12 nM for Cu(2+) at pH 7, and 14, 79, 20, and 21 nM for Mn(2+), Pb(2+), Zn(2+), and Ni(2+), respectively, at pH 11, which was lower than (or close to) the United States Environmental Protection Agency standard for the safety limit of these heavy metal ions in drinking water. The mechanism of detection was attributed to the chelation between the nitrogen atoms and o-hydroxyl groups of PAR within the microgels and heavy metal ions.

Second order advantage applied to the spectrophotometric analysis of ciprofloxacin and dexamethasone in ophthalmic drops; automatic green method using on-line photodegradation

On-line photodegradation and spectrophotometric analysis assisted by multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares (MCR-ALS) was developed the simultaneous determination of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and dexamethasone (DEX) in ophthalmic suspensions using an automated flow-batch analysis (FBA) system. CIP and DEX have strongly overlapped UV spectra. Overcoming this lack of selectivity involves augmenting data dimensionality. This could be performed by adding information about the sample photodegradation to obtain the so-called second order advantage. Commercial sample analysis was successfully performed and no statistical differences (α = 0.05) with respect to pharmacopeia methods were obtained. The proposed method offers several advantages over the methods developed to date. In agreement with the principles of green chemistry, only water was used as solvent, low amounts of waste were generated and on-line waste treatment was included in the system. Moreover, the cost per analysis was significantly reduced compared to methods that employ separative techniques.

SERS and DFT investigation of 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol and its metal complexes with Al(III), Mn(II), Fe(III), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Pb(II)

The development of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) as a prospective analytical methodology for detection of metal ions was shown in recent years by several studies on metal complexes. In this work, 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN) and its Al(III), Mn(II), Fe(III), Cu(II), Zn(II) and Pb(II) complexes were studied by FTIR, FT-Raman and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopies. Molecular geometry optimization, molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) distribution and vibrational frequencies calculations were performed using the hybrid B3LYP exchange-correlation functional for the PAN molecule and its bidentate complexes. The calculated MEP distributions indicated the atoms with highest electronegativity, the adsorption to the silver surface occurring through these atoms. Based on experimental and theoretical data we were able to identify unique and representative features, useful for the identification of each PAN-metal complex.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering and DFT investigation of Eriochrome Black T metal chelating compound

The surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of Eriochrome Black T (EBT) and its Cu(II), Fe(III), Mn(II) and Pb(II) complexes were recorded using a hydroxylamine reduced silver colloid. Molecular geometry optimization, molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) distribution and vibrational frequencies calculation were performed at B3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory for the EBT molecule and its Cu(EBT), Fe(EBT) and Mn(EBT) metal complexes. Differentiation between EBT complexes of Cu(II), Fe(III), Mn(II) and Pb(II) is shown by the SERS spectral features of each complex.

SERS approach for Zn(II) detection in contaminated soil

Soil contamination by metals is a common problem encountered in many industrialized countries. In this work we present a new approach for heavy metals detection by using surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. Zn(II) can be clearly determined by SERS in contaminated soil by using 4-(2-pyridylazo) resorcinol (PAR) as chelating molecule for the metal ion. The SERS spectra of PAR, of its metal chelates and of the soil extract-PAR mixture were recorded using a hydroxylamine reduced silver colloid. An excellent match of the PAR-contaminated soil extracts SERS spectrum to the Zn(PAR)2 SERS spectrum can be observed, demonstrating the presence of Zn(II) in the soil probes. Density functional theory (DFT) based calculations were also performed for a reliable assignment of SERS spectra.

A reflectance flow-through thionine sol-gel sensor for the determination of Se(IV)

In this work, a reversible sensor to assess the total Se(IV) content in samples is described. Pre-activated glass slides were spin-coated with 100 microL of a 20-h aged sol-gel mixture of 1 mL of tetramethoxysilane, 305 microL of 50 mmol L(-1) HCl and 2.0 mg of thionine. The flow-cell consisted of one of those slides as a window, and was filled with beads of a polystyrene anionic exchange resin to retain Se(IV) in the form of selenite ions. A reflectance transduction scheme at a wavelength of 596 nm was adopted. The cell was coupled to a multicommutation flow system where a programmed volume of a sample solution and 373 microL of 0.4 mmol L(-1) iodide in a 1.6 mol L(-1) HCl solution were sequentially inserted into the cell. The iodine produced from the reaction of retained Se(IV) with iodide bleached the blue color of thionine. Considering a sample volume of 2.30 mL, with which the preconcentration step was minimized, a linear dynamic working range between 1.5 to 20 microg mL(-1) and a detection limit of 0.29 microg mL(-1) were obtained. The sensor enabled us to perform approximately 200 assays, and provided results similar to those of electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry.

An Optode Sensor for Cu2+ with High Selectivity Based on Porphyrin Derivative Appended with Bipyridine

A porphyrin derivative (fluorophore) appended with bipyridine (ionophore) has been applied for preparation of a Cu2+-sensitive optical chemical sensor, which is based on fluorescence quenching of porphyrin derivative entrapped in a poly(vinyl chloride) membrane by the energy transfer process. The sensor exhibits a linear response toward Cu2+ in the concentration range 2.0 x 10(-8) - 1.0 x 10(-5) M, with a working pH range from 6.0 to 8.0 and a high selectivity. The detection limit is 5 x 10(-9) M. The response time for Cu2+ is less than 5 min with concentrations lower than 5 x 10(-6) M. The optode can be regenerated using 0.3 M EDTA (pH 9) and acetate buffer solution. The effect of the composition of the sensor membrane was studied, and the experimental conditions were optimized. The sensor has been used for direct determination of Cu2+ in water samples with satisfied results.
