Abstract
We report on the fabrication of a single-electron transistor based on ferritin using wide self-aligned nanogap devices. A local gate below the gap area enables three-terminal electrical measurements, showing the Coulomb blockade in good agreement with the single-electron tunneling theory. Comparison with this theory allows extraction of the tunnel resistances, capacitances, and gate coupling. Additionally, the data suggest the presence of two separate islands coupled in series or in parallel: information that was not possible to distinguish by using only two-terminal measurements. To interpret the charge transport features, we propose a scenario based on the established configuration structures of ferritin involving either iron sites in the organic shell or two dissimilar clusters within the core.

Abstract
Food-borne diseases caused by microbial contamination have always been a matter of great concern to human beings. Hence, the research on these problems has never stopped. With the development of microorganism amplification technology, more and more detection methods have come into our vision. However, traditional detection technologies presents more or less drawbacks, such as complicated operation, low accuracy, low sensitivity, long-time detection, and so on. Therefore, more convenient, accurate, and sensitive measurement for the microorganism are needed. Isothermal amplification technology is one of the alternative approach containing the above mentioned advantages. This work mainly summarizes the principles of loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) and rolling circle amplification (RCA) which belong to isothermal amplification. Meanwhile, the application of LAMP and RCA in food microorganism detection is introduced.

Abstract
Microorganisms are omnipresent and inseparable from our life. Many of them are beneficial to humans, while some are not. Importantly, foods and beverages are susceptible to microbial contamination, with their toxins causing illnesses and even death in some cases. Therefore, monitoring and detecting harmful microorganisms are critical to ensuring human health and safety. For several decades, many methods have been developed to detect and monitor microorganisms and their toxicants. Conventionally, nucleic acid analysis and antibody-based analysis were used to detect pathogens. Additionally, diverse chromatographic methods were employed to detect toxins based on their chemical and structural properties. However, conventional techniques have several disadvantages concerning analysis time, sensitivity, and expense. With the advances in biotechnology, new approaches to detect pathogens and toxins have been reported to compensate for the disadvantages of conventional analysis from different research fields, including electrochemistry, nanotechnology, and molecular biology. Among them, we focused on the recent studies of transcription factor (TF)-based biosensors to detect microorganisms and discuss their perspectives and applications. Additionally, the other biosensors for detecting microorganisms reported in recent studies were also introduced in this review.

Abstract
The binding ability of lectins has gained attention owing to the carbohydrate-specific interactions of these proteins. Such interactions can be applied to diverse fields of biotechnology, including the detection, isolation, and concentration of biological target molecules. The physiological aspects of the lectin concanavalin A (ConA) have been intensively studied through structural and functional investigations. X-ray crystallography studies have proven that ConA has two β-sheets and a short α-helix and that it exists in the form of a metalloprotein containing Mn2+ and Ca2+. These heterometals are coordinated with side chains located in a metal-coordinated domain (MCD), and they affect the structural environment in the carbohydrate-binding domain (CBD), which interacts with carbohydrates through hydrogen bonds. Recent studies have shown that ConA can regulate biophysical interactions with glycoproteins in virus envelopes because it specifically interacts with diverse polysaccharides through its CBD (Tyr, Asn, Asp, and Arg residues positioned next to the MCD). Owing to their protein-protein interaction abilities, ConA can form diverse self-assembled complexes including monomers, dimers, trimers, and tetramers, thus affording unique results in different applications. In this regard, herein, we present a review of the structural modifications in ConA through metal-ion coordination and their effect on complex formation. In recent approaches, ConA has been applied for viral protein detection, on the basis of the interactions of ConA. These aspects indicate that lectins should be thoroughly investigated with respect to their biophysical interactions, for avoiding unexpected changes in their interaction abilities.

Abstract
To match the current life-style, there is a huge demand and market for the processed food whose manufacturing requires multiple steps. The mounting demand increases the pressure on the producers and the regulatory bodies to provide sensitive, facile, and cost-effective methods to safeguard consumers' health. In the multistep process of food processing, there are several chances that the food-spoiling microbes or contaminants could enter the supply chain. In this contest, there is a dire necessity to comprehend, implement, and monitor the levels of contaminants by utilizing various available methods, such as single-cell droplet microfluidic system, DNA biosensor, nanobiosensor, smartphone-based biosensor, aptasensor, and DNA microarray-based methods. The current review focuses on the advancements in these methods for the detection of food-borne contaminants and pathogens.

Abstract
Electrospun nanofibers have been exploited in multidisciplinary fields with numerous applications for decades. Owing to their interconnected ultrafine fibrous structure, high surface-to-volume ratio, tortuosity, permeability, and miniaturization ability along with the benefits of their lightweight, porous nanofibrous structure, they have been extensively utilized in various research fields for decades. Electrospun nanofiber technologies have paved unprecedented advancements with new innovations and discoveries in several fields of application including energy devices and biomedical and environmental appliances. This review article focused on providing a comprehensive overview related to the recent advancements in health care and energy devices while emphasizing on the importance and uniqueness of utilizing nanofibers. A brief description regarding the effect of electrospinning techniques, setup modifications, and parameters optimization on the nanofiber morphology was also provided. The article is concluded with a short discussion on current research challenges and future perspectives.

Abstract
Protamine, a guanidinium rich polymer, is proposed as a universal bioreceptor for bacteria, towards rapid and handheld bacteria detection from complex environmental water samples without the need for specific antibodies or primers. Escherichia coli K12, Salmonella Typhimurium, and Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) were assayed, representing gram-negative, gram-positive, rod- and round-shaped bacteria. Samples and the protamine conjugated fluorescent particles were sequentially loaded to the paper microfluidic chips and flowed through the channels spontaneously via capillary action. The particles were aggregated via protamine-bacteria membrane interactions and unbound particles were rinsed via capillary action. A low-cost smartphone fluorescence microscope was designed, fabricated, and imaged the paper channels. A unique image processing algorithm isolated only the aggregated particles to detect all three bacteria (p < 0.05) with a detection limit of 101-102 CFU/mL. Protamine did not induce any particle aggregation with a model protein, algae, and virus. Successful bacteria detection was also demonstrated with environmental field water samples. Total assay time was < 10 min with neither extraction nor enrichment steps. In summary, a guanidinium-rich polymer showed a promise as a universal bioreceptor for bacteria and can be used on a paper microfluidic chip and smartphone quantification towards rapid and handheld detection.

Abstract
The detection of food adulterants and toxicants can prevent a large variety of adverse health conditions for the global population. Through the process of rapid sensing enabled by deploying novel and robust sensors, the food industry can assist in the detection of adulterants and toxicants at trace levels. Sensor platforms which exploit graphene-based nanomaterials satisfy this requirement due to outstanding electrical, optical and thermal properties. The materials' facile conjugation with linkers and biomolecules along with the option for further enhancement using nanoparticles results in highly sensitive and selective sensing characteristics. This review highlights novel applications of graphene derivatives for detection covering three important approaches; optical, electrical (field-effect) and electrochemical sensing. Suitable graphene-based sensors for portable devices as point-of-need platforms are also presented. The future scope of these sensors is discussed to showcase how these emerging techniques will disrupt the food detection sector for years to come.

Abstract
PurposeNanotechnology as an emerging area if adequately harnessed could revolutionise food packaging and food processing industry worldwide. Although several benefits of nano-materials or particles in food packaging have been suggested, potential risks and health hazards of nano-materials or particles are possible as a result of migration of their particles into food materials. The purpose of this review therefore assessed nanotechnology and its applications in food packaging, consumer acceptability of nano-packaged foods and potential hazards and safety issues in nano-packaged foods.Design/methodology/approachThis review takes a critical assessment of previous literature on nanotechnology and its impact on food packaging, consumer health and safety.FindingsApplications of nanotechnology in food packaging could be divided into three main divisions: improved packaging, which involves mixing nano-materials into polymers matrix to improve temperature, humidity and gas barrier resistance of the packaging materials. Active packaging deals with direct interaction between nano-materials used for packaging and the food to protect it as anti-microbial or oxygen or ultra violet scavengers. Smart packaging could be used to sense biochemical or microbial changes in foods, as well as a tracker for food safety, to prevent food counterfeit and adulteration. The review also discussed bio-based food packaging which is biodegradable. Bio-based packaging could serve as veritable alternative to conventional packaging which is non-degradable plastic polymers which are not environmental friendly and could pose a threat to the environment. However, bio-based packaging could reduce material waste, elongate shelf life and enhance food quality. However, several challenges are envisaged in the use of nano-materials in food packaging due to knowledge gaps, possible interaction with food products and possible health risks that could result from the nano-materials used for food packaging.Originality/valueThe increase in growth and utilisation of nanotechnology signifies wide use of nano-materials especially in the food sector with arrays of potential benefits in the areas of food safety and quality, micronutrients and bioactive ingredients delivery, food processing and in packaging Active studies are being carried out to develop innovative packages such as smart, intelligent and active food packaging to enhance effective and efficient packaging, as well as balanced environmental issues. This review looks at the future of nano-packaged foodsvis-à-visthe roles played by stakeholders such as governments, regulatory agencies and manufacturers in looking into consumer health and safety issues related to the application of nano-materials in food packaging.

Abstract
Detection of mycotoxins, especially aflatoxin M1 (AFM1), in milk is crucial to be able to guarantee food quality and safety. In recent years, biosensors have been emerging as a fast, reliable and low-cost technique for the detection of this toxin. In this work, flexible biosensors were fabricated using dispense-printed electrodes, which were functionalized with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and subsequently coated with specific antibodies to improve their sensitivity. Next, the immunosensor was tested for the detection of AFM1 in buffer solution and a spiked milk sample using a chronoamperometric technique. Results showed that the working range of the sensors was 0.01 µg/L at minimum and 1 µg/L at maximum in both buffer and spiked milk. The lower limit of detection of the SWCNT-functionalized sensor was 0.02 µg/L, which indicates an improved sensitivity compared to the sensors reported so far. The sensitivity and detection range were in accordance with the limitation values imposed by regulations on milk and its products. Therefore, considering the low fabrication cost, the ease of operation, and the rapid read-out, the use of this sensor could contribute to safeguarding consumers’ health.

Abstract
Rapid detection of the foodborne pathogen Salmonella in food processing is of crucial importance to prevent food outbreaks and to ensure consumer safety. Detection and quantification of Salmonella species in food samples is routinely performed using conventional culture-based techniques, which are labor intensive, involve well-trained personnel, and are unsuitable for on-site and high-throughput analysis. To overcome these drawbacks, many research teams have developed alternative methods like biosensors, and more particularly aptasensors, were a nucleic acid is used as biorecognition element. The increasing interest in these devices is related to their high specificity, convenience, and relative rapid response. This review aims to present the advances made in these last years in the development of biosensors for the detection and the quantification of Salmonella, highlighting applications on meat from the chicken food chain.

Abstract
An immunomagnetic optical probe based on a core/shell magnetic nanoparticle-quantum dot was fabricated for detection of Streptococcus agalactiae, the causative agent of pneumonia and meningitis in newborns. The silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles conjugated with anti-S. agalactiae monoclonal antibody provided high specificity for pre-enrichment of bacteria from biological samples with a complex matrix such as milk. Compared with conventional methods such as culture and molecular techniques, the combination of fluorescent quantum dot and magnetic nanoparticle enhanced the sensitivity and speed of bacterial identification. The bio-functionalized fluorescent-magnetic nanoparticles were characterized by TEM, SEM, VSM, XRD, DLS, and FTIR and applied to the detection of S. agalactiae with a limit of 10 and 102 CFU/mL in PBS and milk, respectively. This immunomagnetic optical probe can be used for rapid isolation, sensitive, and specific detection of targeted bacteria without any treatment in clinical and animal samples in the presence of other infectious agents.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are a group of secondary metabolites produced by different species of filamentous fungi and pose serious threats to food safety due to their serious human and animal health impacts such as carcinogenic, teratogenic and hepatotoxic effects. Conventional methods for the detection of mycotoxins include gas chromatography and high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry or other detectors (fluorescence or UV detection), thin layer chromatography and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. These techniques are generally straightforward and yield reliable results; however, they are time-consuming, require extensive preparation steps, use large-scale instruments, and consume large amounts of hazardous chemical reagents. Rapid detection of mycotoxins is becoming an increasingly important challenge for the food industry in order to effectively enforce regulations and ensure the safety of food and feed. In this sense, several studies have been done with the aim of developing strategies to detect mycotoxins using sensing devices that have high sensitivity and specificity, fast analysis, low cost and portability. The latter include the use of microarray chips, multiplex lateral flow, Surface Plasmon Resonance, Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering and biosensors using nanoparticles. In this perspective, thin film sensors have recently emerged as a good candidate technique to meet such requirements. This review summarizes the application and challenges of thin film sensor devices for detection of mycotoxins in food matrices.

Abstract
Background In this work, we report an electrochemical biosensor for the detection of anti-hemagglutinin antibodies against the swine virus H1N1 present in mice sera immunized with mixture of His6-H1 HA in monomeric and oligomeric form. The oriented immobilization of the recombinant His-tagged hemagglutinin (His6-H1 HA) consists of: (i) formation of a mixed layer of 4-mercaptobutanol (MBT) and the thiol derivative of dipyrromethene (DPM); (ii) complexation of Cu (II) by DPM; (iii) immobilization of His6-H1 HA via coordination bonds between Cu (II) sites from DPM–Cu (II) complex and imidazole nitrogen atoms of a histidine tag; (iv) filling free spaces with bovine serum albumin. The interactions between recombinant His6- H1 HA covalently attached to the electrode surface and the anti-hemagglutinin H1 antibodies present in mice sera were explored with Osteryoung square-wave voltammetry. Results This analytical device was able to detect the antibodies present in vaccinated mice sera diluted from 1 × 109 to 1 × 108 fold. Conclusions The unprecedented sensitivity of described biosensor is much better than widely use ELISA test and other analytical methods for determination of antibodies against the influenza A viruses. It has been proved that redox active DPM-Cu (II) monolayer is a universal platform suitable for stable and oriented immobilization of any His-tagged sensing elements. Thus, this universal layer could be a base of numerous analytical devices suitable for detection of antibodies against different viruses.

Abstract
Worldwide legislation is driving the development of novel and highly efficient analytical tools for assessing the composition of every material that interacts with Consumers or Nature. The biosensor technology is one of the most active R&D domains of Analytical Sciences focused on the challenge of taking analytical chemistry to the field. Electrochemical biosensors based on redox enzymes, in particular, are highly appealing due to their usual quick response, high selectivity and sensitivity, low cost and portable dimensions. This review paper aims to provide an overview of the most important advances made in the field since the proposal of the first biosensor, the well-known hand-held glucose meter. The first section addresses the current needs and challenges for novel analytical tools, followed by a brief description of the different components and configurations of biosensing devices, and the fundamentals of enzyme kinetics and amperometry. The following sections emphasize on enzyme-based amperometric biosensors and the different stages of their development.

Abstract
We review the status of protein-based molecular electronics. First, we define and discuss fundamental concepts of electron transfer and transport in and across proteins and proposed mechanisms for these processes. We then describe the immobilization of proteins to solid-state surfaces in both nanoscale and macroscopic approaches, and highlight how different methodologies can alter protein electronic properties. Because immobilizing proteins while retaining biological activity is crucial to the successful development of bioelectronic devices, we discuss this process at length. We briefly discuss computational predictions and their connection to experimental results. We then summarize how the biological activity of immobilized proteins is beneficial for bioelectronic devices, and how conductance measurements can shed light on protein properties. Finally, we consider how the research to date could influence the development of future bioelectronic devices.

Abstract
Foodborne illness outbreaks caused by the consumption of food contaminated with harmful bacteria has drastically increased in the past decades. Therefore, detection of harmful bacteria in the food has become an important factor for the recognition and prevention of problems associated with food safety and public health. Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most commonly isolated foodborne pathogen and it is considered as a major cause of foodborne illnesses worldwide. A number of different methods have been developed for the detection and identification of S. aureus in food samples. However, some of these methods are laborious and time-consuming and are not suitable for on-site applications. Therefore, it is highly important to develop rapid and more approachable detection methods. In the last decade, biosensors have gained popularity as an attractive alternative method and now considered as one of most rapid and on-site applicable methods. An overview of the biosensor based methods used for the detection of S. aureus is presented herein. This review focuses on the state-of-the-art biosensor methods towards the detection and quantification of S. aureus, and discusses the most commonly used biosensor methods based on the transducing mode, such as electrochemical, optical, and mass-based biosensors.

Abstract
SalmonellaTyphimurium is one of the most dangerous foodborne pathogens and poses a significant threat to human health. The objective of this study was to develop a portable impedance immunosensing system for rapid and sensitive detection of S. Typhimurium in poultry. The developed portable impedance immunosensing system consisted of a gold interdigitated array microelectrode (IDAM), a signal acquisitive interface and a laptop computer with LabVIEW software. The IDAM was first functionalized with 16-Mercaptohexadecanoic acid, and streptavidin was immobilized onto the electrode surface through covalent bonding. Then, biotin-labelled S. Typhimurium-antibody was immobilized onto the IDAM surface. Samples were dropped on the surface of the IDAM and the S. Typhimurium cells in the samples were captured by the antibody on the IDAM. This resulted in impedance changes that were measured and displayed with the LabVIEW software. An equivalent circuit of the immunosensor demonstrated that the largest change in impedance was due to the electron-transfer resistance. The equivalent circuit showed an increase of 35% for the electron-transfer resistance value compared to the negative control. The calibration result indicated that the portable impedance immunosensing system could be used to measure the standard impedance elements, and it had a maximum error of measurement of approximately 13%. For pure culture detection, the system had a linear relationship between the impedance change and the logarithmic value of S. Typhimurium cells ranging from 76 to 7.6 × 106 CFU (colony-forming unit) (50 μL)−1. The immunosensor also had a correlation coefficient of 0.98, and a high specificity for detection of S. Typhimurium cells with a limit of detection (LOD) of 102 CFU (50 μL)−1. The detection time from the moment a sample was introduced to the display of the results was 1 h. To conclude, the portable impedance immunosensing system for detection of S. Typhimurium achieved an LOD that is comparable with commercial electrochemical impedance instruments. The developed impedance immunosensor has advantages in portability, low cost, rapid detection and label-free features showing a great potential for in-field detection of foodborne pathogens.

Abstract
Recent innovations in nanotechnology have transformed a number of scientific and industrial areas including the food industry. Applications of nanotechnology have emerged with increasing need of nanoparticle uses in various fields of food science and food microbiology, including food processing, food packaging, functional food development, food safety, detection of foodborne pathogens, and shelf-life extension of food and/or food products. This review summarizes the potential of nanoparticles for their uses in the food industry in order to provide consumers a safe and contamination free food and to ensure the consumer acceptability of the food with enhanced functional properties. Aspects of application of nanotechnology in relation to increasing in food nutrition and organoleptic properties of foods have also been discussed briefly along with a few insights on safety issues and regulatory concerns on nano-processed food products.

Abstract
Electrochemical biosensors have shown great promise in the development of rapid methods for the detection of foodborne pathogens and have been intensively studied over the past two decades. The scope of this review is to summarize the advancements made in the development of electrochemical biosensors for the rapid detection of one of the most common foodborne pathogens, Escherichia coli O157:H7. The article is intended to include different configurations of electrochemical biosensors based on the sensing principles and measured electrical parameters, as well as the latest improvements of technology in the progress of electrochemical biosensor development to detect E. coli O157:H7. By discussing the current and future trend based on some of excellent published literatures and reviews, this survey is hoped to illustrate a broad and comprehensive understanding of electrochemical biosensors for the detection of foodborne pathogens.

Abstract
Rapid development of nanotechnology is expected to transform many areas of food science and food industry with increasing investment and market share. In this article, current applications of nanotechnology in food systems are briefly reviewed. Functionality and applicability of food-related nanotechnology are highlighted in order to provide a comprehensive view on the development and safety assessment of nanotechnology in the food industry. While food nanotechnology offers great potential benefits, there are emerging concerns arising from its novel physicochemical properties. Therefore, the safety concerns and regulatory policies on its manufacturing, processing, packaging, and consumption are briefly addressed. At the end of this article, the perspectives of nanotechnology in active and intelligent packaging applications are highlighted.

Abstract
This paper describes for the first time the selection of aptamers selective to penicillin. Aptamers were selected using a specific process called Capture-SELEX (Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential Enrichment). This technique is based on the selection of DNA aptamers using penicillin G in solution while the ssDNA library is fixed on a support. One aptamer showing a good affinity to penicillin was finally selected and tested in electrochemical sensor configuration, using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy as detection technique. The developed aptasensor allowed the detection of penicillin in a wide concentration range, comprised between 0.4 and 1000µgL-1 Such performance was compatible with milk analysis, as the maximum residue limit tolerated in this matrix is 4µgL-1. The selectivity of the developed sensor was also studied, showing that the sensor was also able to bind other beta-lactam antibiotics, although with a weaker affinity. Finally the sensor was used for detection of penicillin G in milk. It was shown that a simple sample treatment with isopropanol followed by filtration was sufficient to eliminate matrix effects, allowing the determination of penicillin in milk at concentrations compatible with legislation requirements.

Abstract
Fungal diseases in commercially important plants results in a significant reduction in both quality and yield, often leading to the loss of an entire plant. In order to minimize the losses, it is essential to detect and identify the pathogens at an early stage. Early detection and accurate identification of pathogens can control the spread of infection. The present article provides a comprehensive overview of conventional methods, current trends and advances in fungal pathogen detection with an emphasis on biosensors. Traditional techniques are the "gold standard" in fungal detection which relies on symptoms, culture-based, morphological observation and biochemical identifications. In recent times, with the advancement of biotechnology, molecular and immunological approaches have revolutionized fungal disease detection. But the drawback lies in the fact that these methods require specific and expensive equipments. Thus, there is an urgent need for rapid, reliable, sensitive, cost effective and easy to use diagnostic methods for fungal pathogen detection. Biosensors would become a promising and attractive alternative, but they still have to be subjected to some modifications, improvements and proper validation for on-field use.

Abstract
The presence of pathogenic bacteria in foods has always been a great threat to the wellbeing of people and the revenue of food manufacturers. Therefore, the demand for advanced detection methods that can sensitively and rapidly detect these pathogens has been of great importance. This study reports an electrochemical biosensor for rapid detection of E. coli O157:H7 with the integration of bifunctional glucose oxidase (GOx)-polydopamine (PDA) based polymeric nanocomposites (PMNCs) and Prussian blue (PB) modified screen-printed interdigitated microelectrodes (SP-IDMEs). The core-shell magnetic beads (MBs)-GOx@PDA PMNCs were first synthesized by the self-polymerization of dopamine (DA). Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were dispersed on the surface of PMNCs through biochemical synthesis to achieve further highly efficient adsorption of antibodies (ABs) and GOx. The final product ABs/GOxext/AuNPs/MBs-GOx@PDA PMNCs served as the carrier to separate target bacteria from food matrices as well as the amplifier for electrochemical measurement. The unbound PMNCs were separated by a filtration step and transferred into glucose solution to allow the enzymatic reaction to occur. The change of the current response was measured with an electrochemical detector using PB-modified SP-IDMEs. The constructed biosensor has been proven to be able to detect E. coli O157:H7 with the detection limit of 10(2) cfu ml(-1). The bifunctional PMNCs contain a high load of enzyme and can optimally utilize the binding sites on bacterial cells, which efficiently amplify the signals for measurement. The biosensor in this study exhibited good specificity, reproducibility, and stability and is expected to have a great impact on applications in the detection of foodborne pathogens.

Abstract
Colorimetric plasmon sensors for naked-eye detection of molecular recognition events have been proposed. Here, 3-layered Ag nanoparticle (NP) sheets on a Au substrate fabricated using the Langmuir-Schaefer method were utilized as the detection substrates. A drastic color change was observed following the binding of Au NPs via avidin-biotin interactions at less than 30% surface coverage. The color change was attributed not only to the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the adsorbed Au NPs but also to the multiple light trapping effect derived from the stratified Au and Ag NPs, as predicted by a finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. This plasmonic multi-color has great potential in the development of simple and highly sensitive diagnostic systems.

Abstract
Folic acid (FA) is a water soluble vitamin that exists in many natural species. The lack of FA causes some deficiencies in the human body, so finding a simple and sensitive method for determining the FA is important. One of the modern techniques which overcome the disadvantages of conventional determination methods is the sensors. Possibility of miniaturization, the development of microfabricated electrochemical (EC) sensors has resulted in high sensitivity, portability, improved performance and spatial resolution, low power consumption, and the opportunity for integration with other technologies made Micro-Electrical-Mechanical Systems-based EC sensors suitable to identify low concentration analytes and microorganisms in a variety of mediums.

Abstract
Food losses due to crop infections from pathogens such as bacteria, viruses and fungi are persistent issues in agriculture for centuries across the globe. In order to minimize the disease induced damage in crops during growth, harvest and postharvest processing, as well as to maximize productivity and ensure agricultural sustainability, advanced disease detection and prevention in crops are imperative. This paper reviews the direct and indirect disease identification methods currently used in agriculture. Laboratory-based techniques such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR), immunofluorescence (IF), fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), flow cytometry (FCM) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) are some of the direct detection methods. Indirect methods include thermography, fluorescence imaging and hyperspectral techniques. Finally, the review also provides a comprehensive overview of biosensors based on highly selective bio-recognition elements such as enzyme, antibody, DNA/RNA and bacteriophage as a new tool for the early identification of crop diseases.

Abstract
Optical microfibre photonic components offer a variety of enabling properties, including large evanescent fields, flexibility, configurability, high confinement, robustness and compactness. These unique features have been exploited in a range of applications such as telecommunication, sensing, optical manipulation and high Q resonators. Optical microfibre biosensors, as a class of fibre optic biosensors which rely on small geometries to expose the evanescent field to interact with samples, have been widely investigated. Due to their unique properties, such as fast response, functionalization, strong confinement, configurability, flexibility, compact size, low cost, robustness, ease of miniaturization, large evanescent field and label-free operation, optical microfibres based biosensors seem a promising alternative to traditional immunological methods for biomolecule measurements. Unlabeled DNA and protein targets can be detected by monitoring the changes of various optical transduction mechanisms, such as refractive index, absorption and surface plasmon resonance, since a target molecule is capable of binding to an immobilized optical microfibre. In this review, we critically summarize accomplishments of past optical microfibre label-free biosensors, identify areas for future research and provide a detailed account of the studies conducted to date for biomolecules detection using optical microfibres.

Abstract
A label free impedimetric immunosensor has been fabricated using protein bovine serum albumin (BSA) and monoclonal antibodies against Vibrio cholerae (Ab) functionalized oxalic acid (OA) capped iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanorods for V. cholerae detection. The structural and morphological studies of Fe3O4 and OA-Fe3O4, were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques. The average crystalline size of Fe3O4, OA-Fe3O4 nanorods were obtained as about 29±1 and 39±1nm, respectively. The hydrodynamic radius of nanorods is found as 116nm (OA-Fe3O4) and 77nm (Fe3O4) by DLS measurement. Cytotoxicity of Fe3O4 and OA-Fe3O4 nanorods has been investigated in the presence of human epithelial kidney (HEK) cell line 293 using MTT assay. The cell viability and proliferation studies reveal that the OA-Fe3O4 nanorods facilitate cell growth. The results of electrochemical response studies of the fabricated BSA/Ab/OA-Fe2O3/ITO immunosensor exhibits good linearity in the range of 12.5-500ng mL(-1) with low detection limit of 0.5ng mL(-1), sensitivity 0.1Ωng(-1)ml(-1)cm(-2) and reproducibility more than 11 times.
