Solid-phase extraction of PFOA and PFOS from surface waters on functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes followed by UPLC–ESI-MS

Application of cobalt-cerium-iron ternary layered double hydroxide for extraction of perfluorooctane sulfonate followed by HPLC-MS/MS analysis

Herein, Ce-doped CoFe layered double hydroxide (LDH), noted as CoCeFe ternary LDH, was prepared using the co-precipitation route. Prosperous synthesis of CoFe LDH and successful partial replacement of iron cations with cerium cations in CoCeFe ternary LDH were confirmed by X-ray diffraction patterns, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and elemental dot-mapping images. Nanosheet morphology was recognized for both CoFe LDH and CoCeFe ternary LDH from scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy micrographs. In the following, a dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) method was developed using the synthesized CoCeFe ternary LDH as a sorbent for extracting perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) from wastewater samples. For the selective analysis of PFOS, high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectroscopy (HPLC-MS/MS) in multiple reaction monitoring mode was used. Analytical parameters such as the limit of detection equal to 0.02 μg/L, with a linear range of 0.05-300 μg/L, the limit of quantification equal to 0.05 μg/L, and an enrichment factor equal to 23.3 were achieved for PFOS at the optimized condition (sorbent: 5 mg of CoCeFe ternary LDH, eluent type and volume: 150 μL mobile phase, pH: 3, adsorption time: 3 min, and desorption time: 5 min). The developed strategy for the analysis of PFOS was tested in real wastewater samples, including copper mine and petrochemical wastewater. The amount of analytes in real samples was calculated using the standard addition method, and good relative recovery in the range of 86%-105% was obtained. The main novelty of this research is the application of CoCeFe ternary LDH to extract the PFOS from wastewater using the DSPE method for determination by HPLC-MS/MS.

All-in-one strategy to construct bifunctional covalent triazine-based frameworks for simultaneous extraction of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and polychlorinated naphthalenes in foods

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and polychlorinated naphthalenes (PCNs) are of growing concern due to their toxic effects on the environment and human health. There is an urgent need for strategies to monitor and analyze the coexistence of PFASs and PCNs, especially in food samples at trace levels, to ensure food safety. Herein, a novel β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) derived fluoro-functionalized covalent triazine-based frameworks named CD-F-CTF was firstly synthesized. This innovative framework effectively combines the porous nature of the covalent organic framework and the host-guest recognition property of β-CD enabling the simultaneous extraction of PFASs and PCNs. Under the optimal conditions, a simple and rapid method was developed to analyze PFASs and PCNs by solid-phase extraction (SPE) based simultaneous extraction and stepwise elution (SESE) strategy for the first time. When coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) and gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS), this method achieved impressive detection limits for PFASs (0.020 -0.023 ng/g) and PCNs (0.016 -0.075 ng/g). Furthermore, the excellent performance was validated in food samples with recoveries of 76.7-107 % (for PFASs) and 78.0-108 % (for PCNs). This work not only provides a simple and rapid technique for simultaneous monitoring of PFASs and PCNs in food and environmental samples, but also introduces a new idea for the designing novel adsorbents with multiple recognition sites.

Fluoro-functionalized plant biomass adsorbent: Preparation and application in extraction of trace perfluorinated compounds from environmental water samples

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are toxic and widely present in the environment, and therefore effective adsorbents are required to remove PFCs from environmental water. In the present study, a new type of fluorinated biomass materials was synthesized via an ingenious fluorosilanization reaction. These adsorbents were applied for the adsorption of 13 typical PFCs, including perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) and perfluorosulfonic acids (PFSAs). By comparing their adsorption performance, Fluorinated cedar slag (FCS) was discovered to have the best absorption efficiency and enabled highly efficient enrichment of PFCs. The adsorption recovery of FCS with the investigated PFCs is greater than 90% under the optimal adsorption condition. Ascribed to the high affinity of F-F sorbent-sorbate interaction, FCS had good adsorption capacities of PFCs from aqueous solution, with the maximum adsorption capacity of 15.80 mg/g for PFOS and 10.71 mg/g for PFOA, respectively. Moreover, the adsorption time could be achieved in a short time (8 min). Using the FCS absorbent, an innovative FCS-solid phase extraction assisted with high performance liquid chromatography-electrospray-tandem mass spectrometry (FCS-SPE-HPLC-ESI-MS/MS) method was first developed to sensitively detect PFCs in the environmental water samples. The intra-day and inter-day recovery rates of the 13 compounds ranged from 90.7%-104.3%, with the RSD of 2.1%-4.7% (intra-day) and 2.5%-8.5% (inter-day), respectively. This research demonstrates the potential of the newly fluoro-functionalized plant biomass to adsorb PFCs from environmental water, with the advantages of high adsorption efficiencies, high anti-interference, easy operation and low economic cost.

Solid-phase extraction cartridges with multi-walled carbon nanotubes and effect of the oxygen functionalities on the recovery efficiency of organic micropollutants

Pristine and functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were investigated as adsorbent materials inside solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridges for extraction and preconcentration of 8 EU-relevant organic micropollutants (with different pKa and polarity) before chromatographic analysis of surface water. The recoveries obtained were > 60% for 5/8 target pollutants (acetamiprid, atrazine, carbamazepine, diclofenac, and isoproturon) using a low amount of this reusable adsorbent (50 mg) and an eco-friendly solvent (ethanol) for both conditioning and elution steps. The introduction of oxygenated surface groups in the carbon nanotubes by using a controlled HNO₃ hydrothermal oxidation method, considerably improved the recoveries obtained for PFOS (perfluorooctanesulfonic acid) and methiocarb, which was ascribed to the hydrogen bond adsorption mechanism, but decreased those observed for the pesticide acetamiprid and for two pharmaceuticals (carbamazepine and diclofenac), suggesting π–π dispersive interactions. Moreover, a good correlation was found between the recovery obtained for methiocarb and the amount of oxygenated surface groups on functionalized MWCNTs, which was mainly attributed to the increase of phenols and carbonyl and quinone groups. Thus, the HNO₃ hydrothermal oxidation method can be used to finely tune the surface chemistry (and texture) of MWCNTs according to the specific micropollutants to be extracted and quantified in real water samples.

Synthesis of a polymeric imidazolium-embedded octadecyl ionic liquid-grafted silica sorbent for extraction of flavonoids

In this work, a polymeric imidazolium-embedded octadecyl ionic liquid (poly(1-vinyl-3-octadecylimidazolium naphthalene sulfonate))-grafted silica (poly(C₁₈VIm⁺NapSO₃^-)@SiO₂) sorbent was prepared and applied as a solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent in extraction of flavonoids. The synthesized poly(C₁₈VIm⁺NapSO₃^-)@SiO₂ sorbent was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectrogram (XPS) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The thermodynamic and kinetic adsorption models of the prepared poly(C₁₈VIm⁺NapSO₃^-)@SiO₂ sorbent towards flavonoids were discussed by nonlinear fitting adsorption curve and the results indicated the thermodynamic adsorption model in this work was tended to be Freundlich model rather than Langmuir one and the pseudo-second order model could be used to describe the dynamic adsorption process. In addition, the adsorption amounts indicated the sorbent has satisfactory extraction capabities towards flavonoids. For investigating the influence of independent variables and their interactions on the extraction efficiency, a Box-Behnken design was used for optimizing three greatly influential parameters after performing single-factor experiments. The interaction energies between flavonoids and two ionic liquids were calculated to understand the adsorption mechanism. Under the optimal conditions, a method used for determining flavonoids was developed by combining SPE technique with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and the developed method exhibited low limits of detection (0.25-0.4 μg L^-1), good linearities with correlation coefficients (R²) in the range of 0.9951-0.9996 and satisfactory recoveries ranging from 83.6% to 114.1%, which confirmed the proposed method could be successfully used to determine trace flavonoids in real samples.

Analysis of Perfluorinated Compounds in Environmental Water Using Decyl-perfluorinated Magnetic Mesoporous Microspheres as Magnetic Solid-Phase Extraction Materials and Microwave-Assisted Derivatization Followed by Gas Chromatography-mass Spectrometry

In this work, a new method was developed for perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) analysis in water samples based on decyl-perfluorinated magnetic mesoporous nanocomposites microspheres-assisted extraction and microwave-assisted derivatization followed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. The decyl-perfluorinated magnetic mesoporous nanocomposites have several advantages such as fast separation ability, good dispersibility in water sample and high selective preconcentration of PFCs. Various parameters, including eluting solvent and volume, the amounts of absorbents, extraction time and elution time, the microwave-assisted derivatization conditions were optimized. Validation studies showed that this method has good linearity (r2 > 0.9970), satisfactory precision (RSD < 7.8%) and high recovery (93-107%). The limits of detection were found to be 0.055-0.086 μg/L and the limits of quantification be 0.18-0.28 μg/L, respectively. The results indicated that the proposed method has advantages of convenience, good sensitivity and high efficiency. The method has been applied successfully to analyze perfluorinated organic acids in real water samples.

A rationally designed perfluorinated host for the extraction of PFOA from water utilising non-covalent interactions

Three hosts for the encapsulation of perfluorooctanoic acid have been synthesized. The host:guest complexes have been characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy in solution and the solid state.

Application of Carbon Nanotubes in Chiral and Achiral Separations of Pharmaceuticals, Biologics and Chemicals

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) possess unique mechanical, physical, electrical and absorbability properties coupled with their nanometer dimensional scale that renders them extremely valuable for applications in many fields including nanotechnology and chromatographic separation. The aim of this review is to provide an updated overview about the applications of CNTs in chiral and achiral separations of pharmaceuticals, biologics and chemicals. Chiral single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) have been directly applied for the enantioseparation of pharmaceuticals and biologicals by using them as stationary or pseudostationary phases in chromatographic separation techniques such as high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), capillary electrophoresis (CE) and gas chromatography (GC). Achiral MWCNTs have been used for achiral separations as efficient sorbent objects in solid-phase extraction techniques of biochemicals and drugs. Achiral SWCNTs have been applied in achiral separation of biological samples. Achiral SWCNTs and MWCNTs have been also successfully used to separate achiral mixtures of pharmaceuticals and chemicals. Collectively, functionalized CNTs have been indirectly applied in separation science by enhancing the enantioseparation of different chiral selectors whereas non-functionalized CNTs have shown efficient capabilities for chiral separations by using techniques such as encapsulation or immobilization in polymer monolithic columns.

Role of air bubbles overlooked in the adsorption of perfluorooctanesulfonate on hydrophobic carbonaceous adsorbents

Hydrophobic interaction has been considered to be responsible for adsorption of perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) on the surface of hydrophobic adsorbents, but the long C-F chain in PFOS is not only hydrophobic but also oleophobic. In this study, for the first time we propose that air bubbles on the surface of hydrophobic carbonaceous adsorbents play an important role in the adsorption of PFOS. The level of adsorption of PFOS on carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphite (GI), graphene (GE), and powdered activated carbon (PAC) decreases after vacuum degassing. Vacuum degassing time and pressure significantly affect the removal of PFOS by these adsorbents. After vacuum degassing at 0.01 atm for 36 h, the extent of removal of PFOS by the pristine CNTs and GI decreases 79% and 74%, respectively, indicating the main contribution of air bubbles to PFOS adsorption. When the degassed solution is recontacted with air during the adsorption process, the removal of PFOS recovers to the value obtained without vacuum degassing, further verifying the key role of air bubbles in PFOS adsorption. By theoretical calculation, the distribution of PFOS in air bubbles on the adsorbent surfaces is discussed, and a new schematic sorption model of PFOS on carbonaceous adsorbents in the presence of air bubbles is proposed. The accumulation of PFOS at the interface of air bubbles on the adsorbents is primarily responsible for its adsorption, providing a new mechanistic insight into the transport, fate, and removal of PFOS.
