Abstract
Research on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) frequently incorporates organofluorine measurements, particularly because they could support a class-based approach to regulation. However, standardized methods for organofluorine analysis in a broad suite of matrices are currently unavailable, including a method for extractable organofluorine (EOF) measured using combustion ion chromatography (CIC). Here, we report the results of an international interlaboratory comparison. Seven laboratories representing academia, government, and the private sector measured paired EOF and PFAS concentrations in groundwater and eel (Anguilla rostrata) from a site contaminated by aqueous film-forming foam. Among all laboratories, targeted PFAS could not explain all EOF in groundwater but accounted for most EOF in eel. EOF results from all laboratories for at least one replicate extract fell within one standard deviation of the interlaboratory mean for groundwater and five out of seven laboratories for eel. PFAS spike mixture recoveries for EOF measurements in groundwater and eel were close to the criterion (±30%) for standardized targeted PFAS methods. Instrumental operation of the CIC such as replicate sample injections was a major source of measurement uncertainty. Blank contamination and incomplete inorganic fluorine removal may introduce additional uncertainties. To elucidate the presence of unknown organofluorine using paired EOF and PFAS measurements, we recommend that analysts carefully consider confounding methodological uncertainties such as differences in precision between measurements, data processing steps such as blank subtraction and replicate analyses, and the relative recoveries of PFAS and other fluorine compounds.

Abstract
Neuritin is a vital neurotrophin that plays an essential role in recovery from nerve injury and neurodegenerative diseases and may become a new target for treating these conditions. However, improving neuritin protein stability is an urgent problem. In this study, to obtain active and stable neuritin proteins, we added a carboxyl-terminal peptide (CTP) sequence containing four O-linked glycosylation sites to the C-terminus of neuritin and cloned it into the Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) expression system. The neuritin-CTP protein was purified using a His-Tag purification strategy after G418 screening of stable high-expression cell lines. Ultimately, we obtained neuritin-CTP protein with a purity >90%. Functional analyses showed that the purified neuritin-CTP protein promoted the neurite outgrowth of PC12 cells, and stability experiments showed that neuritin stability was increased by adding CTP. These results indicate that neuritin protein-CTP fusion effectively increases stability without affecting secretion and activity. This study offers a sound strategy for improving the stability of neuritin protein and provides material conditions for further study of the function of neuritin.

Abstract
Neuritin plays a key role in neural development and regeneration by promoting neurite outgrowth and synapse maturation. Our previous research revealed the mechanism by which neuritin inhibits Notch signaling through interaction with neuralized-like 1 (Neurl1) to promote neurite growth. However, how neuritin regulates Notch signaling through Neurl1 has not been elucidated. Here, we first confirm that neuritin is an upstream regulator of Neurl1 and inhibits Notch signaling through Neurl1. Neurl1 is an E3 ubiquitin ligase that can promote ubiquitination and endocytosis of the Notch1 ligand Jagged1. Therefore, we observe the effect of neuritin on the ligase activity of Neurl1. The results indicate that neuritin inhibits Neurl1 activity by reducing the ubiquitination level and endocytosis of the target protein Jagged1. Moreover, we find that decreased activity of Neurl1 results in reduced expression of Notch receptor Notch intracellular domain (NICD) and downstream target gene hairy and enhancer of split-1 ( HES1). Furthermore, we investigate how neuritin affects Neurl1 enzyme activity. The results show that neuritin not only weakens the affinity between Neurl1 and Jagged1 but also promotes the degradation of Neurl1 by the 26S proteasome pathway. Taken together, our results suggest that neuritin negatively regulates Notch signaling by inhibiting the activity of Neurl1, promoting the degradation of Neurl1 and weakening the affinity of Neurl1 for Jagged1. Our study clarifies the molecular mechanisms of neuritin in regulating the Notch signaling pathway and provides new clues about how neuritin mediates neural regeneration and plasticity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) blended with early rehabilitation on the diaphragm and skeletal muscle in sufferers on mechanical ventilation (MV). METHOD This is a prospective randomized controlled study. Eighty patients on MV for respiratory failure were divided into a study group (40 cases) and a control group (40 cases) randomly. The study group adopted a treatment method of NMES combined with early rehabilitation and the control group adopted the method of early rehabilitation only. The diaphragmatic excursion (DE), diaphragmatic thickening fraction (DTF), variation of thickness of intercostal muscles (TIM), variation of thickness of rectus abdominis (TRA), and variation of the cross-sectional area of rectus femoris (CSA-RF) were measured to evaluate the therapeutic effect by ultrasound before and after intervention at the first day of MV, the 3rd and 7th day of intervention and the day discharged from ICU. RESULTS No significant difference was found in the general demographic information and ultrasound indicators between the two groups before treatment (all P > 0.05). After treatment, the variation of DTF (0.15 ± 0.05% vs. 0.12 ± 0.04%, P = 0.034) was significantly higher in the study group than that in the control group on the day discharged from ICU. The variation of TRA (0.05 ± 0.09% vs. 0.10 ± 0.11%, P = 0.029) and variation of CSA-RF (0.13 ± 0.07% vs. 0.19 ± 0.08%, P < 0.001) in the study group were significantly lower than that in the control group. The duration of MV in the study group was significantly shorter than that in the control group [109.5 (88.0, 213.0) hours vs. 189.5 (131.5, 343.5) hours, P = 0.023]. The study group had better muscle strength score than the control group at discharge (52.20 ± 11.70 vs. 44.10 ± 15.70, P = 0.011). CONCLUSION NMES combined with early rehabilitation therapy is beneficial in reducing muscle atrophy and improving muscle strength in mechanically ventilated patients. This treatment approach may provide a new option for patients to choose a rehabilitation program; however, more research is needed to fully evaluate the effectiveness of this treatment option.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of Zuogui Jiangtang Jieyu Decoction (ZJJ) on Shh signaling and self-renewal of neural stem cells in the hippocampal dentate gyrus of diabetic rats with depression. METHODS Diabetic rat models with depression were randomly divided into model group, positive drug (metformin + fluoxetine) group, and low-, medium-, and high-dose ZJJ groups (n=16), with normal SD rats as the control group. The positive drugs and ZJJ were administered by gavage, and the rats in the control and model groups were given distilled water. After the treatment, blood glucose level was detected using test strips, and behavioral changes of the rats were assessed by forced swimming test and water maze test. ELISA was used to examine the serum level of leptin; The expressions of nestin and Brdu proteins in the dentate gyrus of the rats were detected using immunofluorescence assay, and the expressions of self-renewal marker proteins and Shh signaling proteins were detected using Western blotting. RESULTS The diabetic rats with depression showed significantly increased levels of blood glucose and leptin (P < 0.01) and prolonged immobility time in forced swimming test (P < 0.01) and increased stage climbing time with reduced stage seeking time and stage crossings in water maze test (P < 0.01). The expressions of nestin and Brdu in the dentate gyrus, the expressions of cyclin D1, SOX2, Shh, Ptch1, Smo in the hippocampus and the nuclear expression of Gli-1 were decreased (P < 0.01) while hippocampal Gli-3 expression was increased significantly (P < 0.01) in the rat models. Treatment of rat models with high-dose ZJJ significantly reduced the blood glucose (P < 0.01) and leptin level (P < 0.05) and improved their performance in behavioral tests (P < 0.01). The treatment also obviously increased the expressions of nestin, Brdu, cyclin D1, SOX2, Shh, Ptch1, and Smo and the nuclear expression of Gli-1 in the dentate gyrus (P < 0.01) and reduced hippocampal expression of Gli-3 (P < 0.05) in the rat models. CONCLUSION ZJJ can significantly improve the self-renewal ability of neural stem cells and activate Shh signaling in dentate gyrus of diabetic rats with depression.

Abstract
ObjectiveWe aimed to investigate the effects and mechanisms of swallowing-related brain regions using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) in healthy subjects who underwent intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) on dominant or non-dominant cerebellar hemispheres.MethodsThirty-nine healthy subjects were randomized into three groups that completed different iTBS protocols (dominant cerebellum group, non-dominant cerebellum group and sham group). Before iTBS, the resting motor threshold (rMT) was measured by single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation (sTMS) on the cerebellar representation of the suprahyoid muscles, and the dominant cerebellar hemisphere for swallowing was determined. Forty-eight hours after elution, iTBS protocols were completed: in the dominant cerebellum group, iTBS was administered to the dominant cerebellar hemisphere, and the non-dominant cerebellar hemisphere was given sham stimulation; in the non-dominant cerebellum group, iTBS was administered to the non-dominant cerebellar hemisphere, and sham stimulation was delivered to the dominant cerebellar hemisphere; in the sham group, sham stimulation was applied to the cerebellum bilaterally. Rs-fMRI was performed before and after iTBS stimulation to observe changes in the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) in the whole brain.ResultsCompared with baseline, the dominant cerebellum group showed increased fALFF in the ipsilateral cerebellum, and decreased fALFF in the ipsilateral middle temporal gyrus and contralateral precuneus after iTBS; the iTBS of the non-dominant cerebellum group induced increased fALFF in the ipsilateral superior frontal gyrus, the calcarine fissure and the surrounding cortex, and the contralateral inferior parietal lobule; and in the sham group, there was no significant difference in fALFF. Exploring the effects induced by iTBS among groups, the dominant cerebellum group showed decreased fALFF in the contralateral calcarine fissure, and surrounding cortex compared with the sham group.ConclusionIntermittent theta burst stimulation of the dominant cerebellar hemisphere for swallowing excited the ipsilateral cerebellum, and stimulation of the non-dominant cerebellar hemisphere increased the spontaneous neural activity of multiple cerebrocortical areas related to swallowing. In conclusion, regardless of which side of the cerebellum is stimulated, iTBS can facilitate part of the brain neural network related to swallowing. Our findings provide supporting evidence that cerebellar iTBS can be used as a potential method to modulate human swallowing movement.

Abstract
Perfluoroalkyl ether carboxylic acids (PFECAs) are a group of emerging recalcitrant contaminants that are being developed to replace legacy per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in industrial applications and that are generated as by-products in fluoropolymer manufacturing. Here, we report on the removal and destruction of four structurally different PFECAs using an integrated anion exchange resin (AER) and electrochemical oxidation (ECO) treatment train. Results from this work illustrated that (1) flow-through columns packed with PFAS-selective AERs are highly effective for the removal of PFECAs and (2) PFECA affinity is strongly correlated with their hydrophobic features. Regeneration of the spent resin columns revealed that high percentage (e.g., 80%) of organic cosolvent is necessary for achieving 60-100% PFECA release, and regeneration efficiency was higher for a macroporous resin than a gel-type resin. Treatment of spent regenerants showed (1) >99.99% methanol removal was achieved by distillation, (2) >99.999% conversion of the four studied PFECAs was achieved during the ECO treatment of the still bottoms after 24 hours with an energy per order of magnitude of PFECA removal (EE/O) <1.03 kWh/m3 of total groundwater treated, and (3) >85% of the organic fluorine was recovered as inorganic fluoride. Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), perfluoropropionic acid (PFPrA), and perfluoro-2-methoxyacetic acid (PFMOAA) were confirmed via high-resolution mass spectrometry as transformation products (TPs) in the treated still bottoms, and two distinctive degradation schemes and four reaction pathways are proposed for the four PFECAs. Lastly, dissolved organic matter (DOM) inhibited uptake, regeneration, and oxidation of PFECAs throughout the treatment train, suggesting pretreatment steps targeting DOM removal can enhance the system's treatment efficiency. Results from this work provide guidelines for developing effective separation-concentration-destruction treatment trains and meaningful insights for achieving PFECA destruction in impacted aquatic systems.

Abstract
Evidence of the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index as an independent predictor of arterial stiffness in stage 1 hypertension patients is scarce. This study aimed to explore the association between TyG index and arterial stiffness in this population. A total of 1041 individuals from 32 centers with normal/elevated blood pressure (BP, <130/80 mmHg; 345 men (33%); median age, 37 years) and 585 stage 1 hypertension patients (BP ≥130/80 and <140/90 mmHg; 305 men (52%); median age, 47 years) were prospectively enrolled. Arterial stiffness was determined by measuring carotid ultrafast pulse-wave velocity (ufPWV). TyG index was calculated as ln (fasting triglyceride (TG) × fasting blood glucose/2). Patients with a higher TyG index tended to have higher ufPWV. The TyG index was positively associated with ufPWV at the end of systole in stage 1 hypertension patients after adjusting for confounding factors (β for per unit .48), and restricted cubic spline analysis confirmed a linear association. Subgroup analyses in terms of age, sex, and body mass index yielded similar results. However, no significant relationship was observed between the TyG index and ufPWV in the population with normal/elevated BP. The fully adjusted β between ufPWV and the TyG index was higher than the TG/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio, TG, and pulse pressure. In conclusion, patients with a higher TyG index had greater arterial stiffness, and the TyG index independently and positively correlated with arterial stiffness in stage 1 hypertension patients. The TyG index may provide a simple and reliable marker to monitor arterial stiffness in hypertensive patients.

Abstract
The present study aimed to uncover the underlying mechanisms and potential intervention targets of ischemic stroke (IS). An immune cell infiltration analysis using CIBERSORT was performed on two stroke-related datasets from the Gene Expression Omnibus database to generate a competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network. Gene Ontology (GO) functional annotation and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses were used to predict potential biological functions of the network. Differentially expressed genes in the ceRNA network and programmed cell death-related genes were intersected to obtain common genes for a stroke ceRNA network related to programmed cell death. These genes were further verified through a middle cerebral artery occlusion rat model using reverse transcription-quantitative PCR. This built a ceRNA regulatory network based on bioinformatic analysis. In addition to the biological functions extracted from the GO and KEGG enrichment analyses, it was discovered that long non-coding (lnc)RNA-mediated ceRNA regulatory pathways were associated with programmed cell death. This included five for apoptosis (lncRNA deleted in lymphocytic leukemia 2 like (DLEU2L)/micro (miR)-4500/sulfite oxidase, lncRNA DLEU2L/miR-4500/transforming growth factor β receptor III, lncRNA DLEU2L/miR-4500/BTB and CNC homology 1 (BACH1), lncRNA DLEU2L/miR-4500/zinc finger and BTB domain containing 5 and lncRNA LINC00266-1/miR-363-3p/zinc finger protein 354B and two for ferroptosis (lncRNA DLEU2L/miR-4500/ribo-nucleotide reductase regulatory subunit M2 and lncRNA DLEU2L/miR-4500/BACH1). Based on the aforementioned results, the present study provided potential approaches for bridging programmed cell death, immune infiltration and ceRNA regulatory networks in IS. The present study may provide novel insights into the clinical diagnosis and treatment of IS, and may improve the knowledge of the regulation of pathophysiological processes for IS.

Abstract
ObjectiveTo explore the therapeutic effect and mechanism of low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on the speech function of patients with non-fluent aphasia after stroke.MethodsAccording to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 60 patients with post-stroke non-fluent aphasia were included and randomly divided into treatment group (rTMS group) and sham stimulation group (S-rTMS group). Patients in rTMS group were given low-frequency rTMS + ST training. Patients in the S-rTMS group were given sham low-frequency rTMS + ST training. Once a day, 5 days a week, for a total of 4 weeks. The Western Aphasia Battery and the short-form Token test were used to evaluate the language function of the patients in the two groups before and after treatment. Part of the enrolled patients were subjected to functional magnetic resonance imaging examination, and the morning fasting venous blood of the enrolled patients was drawn before and after treatment to determine the content of BDNF and TNF-α.ResultsIn the comparison before and after treatment within the group, all dimensions of the WAB scale of the patients in the rTMS group increased significantly. Only two dimensions of the WAB scale of the patients in the S-rTMS group improved significantly after treatment. The results of the short-form Token test showed that patients in the rTMS group improved significantly before and after treatment. The resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging of the two groups of patients before and after treatment showed: the activation of multiple brain regions in the left hemisphere of the rTMS group increased compared with the control group. The serum BDNF content of the patients in the rTMS group was significantly higher than that of the patients in the S-rTMS group after treatment.ConclusionLow-frequency rTMS combined with conventional speech training can significantly improve the speech function of patients with non-fluent aphasia after stroke.

Abstract
Objective The effects and possible mechanisms of cerebellar high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) on swallowing-related neural networks were studied using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). Method A total of 23 healthy volunteers were recruited, and 19 healthy volunteers were finally included for the statistical analysis. Before stimulation, the cerebellar hemisphere dominant for swallowing was determined by the single-pulse TMS. The cerebellar representation of the suprahyoid muscles of this hemisphere was selected as the target for stimulation with 10 Hz rTMS, 100% resting motor threshold (rMT), and 250 pulses, with every 1 s of stimulation followed by an interval of 9 s. The motor evoked potential (MEP) amplitude of the suprahyoid muscles in the bilateral cerebral cortex was measured before and after stimulation to evaluate the cortical excitability. Forty-eight hours after elution, rTMS was reapplied on the dominant cerebellar representation of the suprahyoid muscles with the same stimulation parameters. Rs-fMRI was performed before and after stimulation to observe the changes in amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and regional homology (ReHo) at 0.01–0.08 Hz, 0.01–0.027 Hz, and 0.027–0.073 Hz. Results After cerebellar high-frequency rTMS, MEP recorded from swallowing-related bilateral cerebral cortex was increased. The results of rs-fMRI showed that at 0.01–0.08 Hz, ALFF was increased at the pons, right cerebellum, and medulla and decreased at the left temporal lobe, and ReHo was decreased at the left insular lobe, right temporal lobe, and corpus callosum. At 0.01–0.027 Hz, ALFF was decreased at the left temporal lobe, and ReHo was decreased at the right temporal lobe, left putamen, and left supplementary motor area. Conclusion Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation of the swallowing cortex in the dominant cerebellar hemisphere increased the bilateral cerebral swallowing cortex excitability and enhanced pontine, bulbar, and cerebellar spontaneous neural activity, suggesting that unilateral high-frequency stimulation of the cerebellum can excite both brainstem and cortical swallowing centers. These findings all provide favorable support for the application of cerebellar rTMS in the clinical practice.

Abstract
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl ether acids (PFEAs) are a subclass of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that are detected with increasing frequency in environmental matrices. Diet can be an important route of PFEA exposure, but the presence of PFEAs in food is poorly understood. Extraction methods for food samples exist for traditionally studied PFAS, but their suitability for PFEAs and other novel PFAS remains unknown. In this study, an extraction and matrix cleanup method was developed to quantify 45 PFAS, including 13 PFEAs, 3 perfluoroalkane sulfonamides, and 6 fluorotelomer carboxylic acids in 10 types of fruits and vegetables. Homogenized samples were extracted with basic methanol, and resulting extracts were diluted with water and cleaned up using solid-phase extraction with weak anion-exchange cartridges. The method was validated by performing spike-recovery experiments at spike levels of 1 ng/g in all 10 matrices and 0.1 ng/g in 2 matrices. For PFAS without a corresponding isotopically labeled internal standard (IS), adopting an IS with a similar chromatographic retention time generated the most accurate recoveries. Dependent upon the matrix, recoveries of 38-44 PFAS (including 10-13 PFEAs) fell within 50-150% for samples spiked at 1 ng/g. Recoveries of 40 and 38 PFAS in blueberries and corn, respectively, fell within 50-150% for samples spiked at 0.1 ng/g. Method quantification limits (MQLs) of PFAS in pure solvents were determined as the lowest calibration level with an accuracy between 70 and 130%. To compensate for matrix effects, a matrix factor was applied on the basis of the analyte response in different matrices relative to the pure solvent. The MQLs of 45 PFAS (including 13 PFEAs) in 10 matrices ranged from 0.025 to 0.25 ng/g. Overall, this method is capable of sensitively quantifying 45 PFAS in many fruits and vegetables.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Coffee and tea intake might be associated with psychiatry diseases. However, it is unclear whether the effect of coffee/tea on anxiety and depression depending on the different types of proteins. DESIGN This was a cross-sectional study. SETTING Our datasets were downloaded from online. PARTICIPANTS Phenotypic and genotypic data for coffee intake(N=376,196) and tea intake (N=376,078) were derived from UK Biobank. GWAS data of proteins (N=1,537) from neurologically relevant tissues (brain, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma) were obtained from a recently published study. MEASUREMENTS Multivariate linear analysis was then used to evaluate the potential interaction effect between coffee/tea intake and proteins polygenetic risk score (PRS) on the risks of anxiety and depression controlling for age, sex, Townsend deprivation index (TDI), smoke, drinking and education level. RESULTS 34 coffee intake-proteins interactions and 15 tea intake-proteins interactions were observed in anxiety individuals, such as coffee intake-c-Jun interaction (β=0.0169, P=4.131×10-3), coffee intake-Fas interaction (β=-0.0190, P=8.132×10-4), tea intake-sL-Selectin interaction (β=0.0112, P=5.412×10-3) and tea intake-IL-1F6 (β=0.0083, P=4.471×10-2). 25 coffee intake-proteins and 14 tea intake-proteins interactions were observed in depression individuals, including coffee intake- IL-1 sRI (β=0.0171, P=4.888×10-3) and coffee intake-NXPH1 interaction (β=0.0156, P=9.819×10-3), tea intake-COLEC12 interaction (β=0.0127, P=3.280×10-3), and tea intake-Layilin interaction (β=0.0117, P=7.926×10-3). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggested the important role of multiple proteins in neurologically relevant tissues in the associations between coffee/tea intake and psychiatry diseases, providing entry points to explore the mechanisms underlying anxiety and depression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the effect of non-invasive neurostimulation therapies on dysphagia patients after stroke. METHODS We searched MEDLINE (Ovid), PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane library databases until April 22, 2020. All published and unpublished randomized controlled trials (RCT) were included. Full texts were independently reviewed. The risk of RCT bias was evaluated by two independent assessors using the Cochrane risk of bias tool. The primary outcome measure was swallowing function before and after neurostimulation therapy. The effect sizes are calculated from the extracted data and combined into a comprehensive summary statistic. RESULT A total of 27 randomized controlled trials were included in this study, involving 914 stroke patients (27 intervention groups and 20 control groups). Meta-analysis showed that compared with the control group, noninvasive neurostimulation therapies (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), surface neuromuscular electrical stimulation (sNMES) or pharyngeal electrical stimulation (PES)) had a better effect (SMD = 0.91; 95% CI: 0.54-1.27; Z = 4.84; P < 0.00001; I² = 86%). In the subgroup analysis based on type of stimulus, rTMS appeared to perform better. In the subgroup analysis based on clinical phase, stimulation applied in the acute phase may be more effective. In the subgroup analysis based on the site of injury, the brainstem injury group seemed to achieve better outcomes. In the subgroup analysis based on stroke type, the cerebral infarction group had better outcomes than the cerebral infarction/hemorrhage mixed group. CONCLUSIONS Non-invasive neurostimulation therapies can effectively promote the recovery of dysphagia after stroke.

Abstract
Photocatalytic water disinfection has emerged as a promising approach for water purification. However, exploring efficient and rapid visible light driven materials for photocatalytic bacterial inactivation is still a challenging problem. Herein, red phosphorus/titanium oxide (TiO2@RP) nanofibers were developed for effective water disinfection by a vacuum ampoule strategy. The complete E. coli and S. aureus (7-log CFU mL-1) could be rapidly killed within 25 min and 30 min over the optimized TiO2@RP heterostructure under the white LED irradiation. The efficient photocatalytic antibacterial activity should be mainly ascribed to the synergetic enhancement in light absorption by RP decoration and charge migration and separation by the interface between TiO2 and RP. And then more unpaired photo-carriers would be transferred to the surface to facilitate the generation of photo-holes, •O2- radicals, and H2O2 species, which could destroy the bacterial cells efficiently.

Abstract
Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is a dangerous neurological disease. The mechanism of ferroptosis in ICH remains unclear. Using bioinformatics analysis, we aimed to identify the key molecules involved in ferroptosis and provide treatment targets for ICH to further explore the mechanism of ferroptosis in ICH. GSE24265 was downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) dataset and intersected with ferroptosis genes. A total of 45 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were selected, most of which were involved in the TNF signaling pathway and oxidative stress response. Key modules constructed by the protein–protein interaction (PPI) network analysis and screening of genes related to the TNF signaling pathway led to the confirmation of the following genes of interest: MAPK1, MAPK8, TNFAIP3, ATF4, and SLC2A1. Moreover, MAPK1 was one of the key genes related to TNF signaling and oxidative stress, and it may play an important role in ferroptosis after cerebral hemorrhage. The MAPK1-related molecules included hsa-miR-15b-5P, hsa-miR-93-5P, miR-20b-5p, SNHG16, XIST, AC084219.4, RP11-379K17.11, CTC-444N24.11, GS1-358P8.4, CTB-89H12.4, RP4-773N10.5, and FGD5-AS1. We also generated a hemorrhage rat model, which was used to conduct exercise intervention in ICH rats, and qRT-PCR was used to assess the expression levels of our genes of interest. The mRNA levels after cerebral hemorrhage showed that MAPK1, ATF4, SLC2A1, and TNFAIP3 were upregulated, whereas MAPK8 was downregulated. Treadmill training increased the expression of anti-inflammatory molecules TNFAIP3 and SLC2A1 and reduced the expression of MAPK1, ATF4, and MAPK8, indicating that treadmill training may be utilized as antioxidant therapy to decrease neuronal ferroptosis. The results of this study indicated that the MAPK1-related mRNA–miRNA–lncRNA interaction chain could be potentially employed as a biomarker of the inception and progression of ferroptosis after cerebral hemorrhage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prolonged mechanical ventilation (MV) induces diaphragm dysfunction in patients in the intensive care units (ICUs). Our study aimed to explore the therapeutic efficacy of early rehabilitation therapy in patients with prolonged MV in the ICU. METHODS Eighty eligible patients who underwent MV for > 72 h in the ICU from June 2019 to March 2020 were enrolled in this prospective randomised controlled trial. The patients were randomly divided into a rehabilitation group (n = 39) and a control group (n = 41). Rehabilitation therapy included six levels of rehabilitation exercises. Diaphragm function was determined using ultrasound (US). RESULTS Diaphragmatic excursion (DE) and diaphragm thickening fraction (DTF) were significantly decreased in all patients in both groups after prolonged MV (p < 0.001). The rehabilitation group had significantly higher DTF (p = 0.008) and a smaller decrease in DTF (p = 0.026) than the control group after 3 days of rehabilitation training. The ventilator duration and intubation duration were significantly shorter in the rehabilitation group than in the control group (p = 0.045 and p = 0.037, respectively). There were no significant differences in the duration of ICU stay, proportion of patients undergoing tracheotomy, and proportion of recovered patients between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS Early rehabilitation is feasible and beneficial to ameliorate diaphragm dysfunction induced by prolonged MV and advance withdrawal from the ventilator and extubation in patients with MV. Diaphragm US is suggested for mechanically ventilated patients in the ICU. Trial registration Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, ID: ChiCTR1900024046, registered on 2019/06/23.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that lncRNA NEAT1 and miR-29b are closely associated with repair of the injured spinal cord. However, the mechanism by which lncRNA NEAT1 promotes regeneration after spinal cord injury by regulating miR-29b has not been reported. To explore this mechanism, we established a rat model of spinal cord injury (SCI). The experimental rats were randomly assigned to one of six groups: the sham, model, si-NEAT1, miR-29b, si-NEAT1 + negative control and si-NEAT1 + si-miR-29b groups. The hind limb motor function of the rats was evaluated on days 1, 3, 7, 14, and 21 after modelling using the BBB rating scale. Seven days after the operation, attenuation of pathological changes in injured spinal cord tissues was evaluated by HE staining. Anterior horn neurons and cavities in the injured area were counted by Nissl staining. In addition, the TUNEL assay was employed to study neuronal apoptosis in the anterior horn, and the expression of the apoptotic proteins Bcl-2 and Bax was analysed by western blotting. Finally, the protein expression of GFAP, NCAM, GAP43, and SCG10 was measured by immunohistochemistry and western blotting. BBB scores revealed that decreasing the level of NEAT1 improved the hind limb motor function of the rats by increasing miR-29b expression. H&E and Nissl staining showed that silencing NEAT1 attenuated lesions in the spinal cord and decreased the number of cavities in the injured spinal cord by upregulating miR-29b. Immunohistochemistry and western blotting suggested that silencing NEAT1 significantly downregulated GFAP expression and upregulated GAP43, SCG10 and NCAM expression by inducing overexpression of miR-29b. The TUNEL assay and western blotting also showed that silencing NEAT1 attenuated neuronal apoptosis.

Objective This study was performed to evaluate a novel method of constructing double eyelids by fixation of the orbicularis oculi muscle and orbital septum to the pretarsal fascia and correction of blepharoptosis. Methods In total, 285 patients requesting aesthetic construction of double eyelids were divided into three groups: those treated by the modified method (Group A, n = 108), those treated by traditional construction of the upper eyelid (Group B, n = 85), and those treated by the Park method (Group C, n = 92). The patients were followed up for 3 to 12 months (average, 6 months). The surgical effects and degree of satisfaction were compared among the three groups. Results In Group A, the mean operative time was 1.0 ± 0.2 hours. The degree of satisfaction with the surgical effect was significantly different between Group A (95.37%) and Group B (87.06%). However, no significant difference in satisfaction was noted between Group A (95.37%) and Group C (91.30%) or between Group B (87.06%) and Group C (91.30%). Conclusions The modified technique is simple and effective for construction of double eyelids and correction of blepharoptosis. All patients were satisfied with the surgical and aesthetic effects.

Abstract
Contamination of drinking water by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) is a worldwide problem. In this study, we for the first time revealed the role of the air-water interface in enhancing the removal of long-chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylic (PFCAs; CnF2n+1COOH, n ≥ 7) and perfluoroalkane sulfonic (PFSAs; CnF2n+1SO3H, n ≥ 6) acids, collectively termed as perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs), through combined aeration and adsorption on two kinds of activated carbon (AC). Aeration was shown to enhance the removal of long-chain PFAAs through adsorption at the air-water interface and subsequent adsorption of PFAA-enriched air bubbles to the AC. The removal of selected long-chain PFAAs was increased by 50-115 % with the assistance of aeration, depending on the perfluoroalkyl chain length. Aeration is more effective in enhancing long-chain PFAA removal as air-water interface adsorption increases with PFAA chain length due to higher surface activity. After removing adsorbed air bubbles by centrifugation, up to 80 % of the long-chain PFAAs were able to desorb from the sorbent, confirming the contribution of the air-water interface to the adsorption of PFAAs on AC. Aeration during AC treatment of water could enhance the removal of long-chain PFAAs, and improve the performance of AC during water treatment.

Abstract
Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is a common congenital cardiac malformation, frequently combined with ascending aorta dilation. However, isolated abnormalities of the aortic arch are less frequent in BAV patients. Here, we present a rare case of BAV combined with right-sided aortic arch aneurysm, aberrant left subclavian artery, and Kommerell's diverticulum, diagnosed by echocardiography and computed tomography angiography. The patient was followed-up regularly because of the life-threatening risks of aortic arch aneurysms.

Abstract
AIMS Left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) is considered a key factor associated with heart failure (HF) symptoms in patients with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). However, LV systolic performance, including LV systolic function and synchrony, has not been well characterized in these patients. The aims of this study were to assess to investigate the underlying relationship and differences between subclinical LVDD and HFpEF. METHODS Eighty-six patients with LVDD were recruited (58 with HFpEF and 28 with subclinical LVDD). Systolic left ventricular (LV) longitudinal strain (LS), systolic longitudinal strain rate (LSrS), early diastolic longitudinal strain rate (LSrE), and late diastolic longitudinal strain rate (LSrA) were measured using speckle tracking echocardiography. LV diastolic and systolic dyssynchrony (Te-SD and Ts-SD) were calculated. Forty age- and sex-matched healthy individuals were enrolled as a control group. RESULTS LV global LS and LSrS were decreased in patients with HFpEF than in normal controls and subclinical LVDD patients (P < .05). Te-SD and Ts-SD were significantly more prolonged in subclinical LVDD and HFpEF patients than in the control group (P < .05). Reduced LS was associated with HF symptoms in LVDD patients, and a cutoff value of -18% for LS could differentiate HFpEF from subclinical LVDD with 73% sensitivity and 69% specificity. CONCLUSION LV systolic function and mechanical dyssynchrony were impaired in HFpEF patients. Deteriorated LV longitudinal systolic function was likely correlated with the symptoms of HFpEF.

Abstract
Adsorption by powder activated carbon (PAC) is recognized as an efficient method for the removal of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in water, while the poor separation of spent PAC makes it difficult for further regeneration, increasing the treatment cost significantly. In this study, an ultrafine magnetic activated carbon (MAC) consisting of Fe3O4 and PAC was prepared by ball milling to remove PFCs from water efficiently. Increasing the percentage of Fe3O4 and balling milling time decreased its adsorption capacity for perfluoroctane sulfonate (PFOS), whereas increased the magnetic separation property to some degree. The optimized MAC was prepared with a Fe3O4 to PAC mass ratio of 1:3 after ball milling for 2 h, and the adsorption equilibriums of all the four PFCs on the optimal MAC were reached within less than 2 h, with the adsorption capacities of 1.63, 0.90, 0.33 and 0.21 mmol/g for PFOS, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) and perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS), respectively. Increasing the solution pH hindered the adsorption of PFOS significantly when the pH was less than the zero potential point (around 6) of the MAC, due to the decreased electrostatic attraction. The spent MAC could be easily separated with a magnet and regenerated by a small volume of methanol, and the regenerated MAC could be reused for more than 5 time and remain stable adsorption capacity for PFOS after 3 cycles. This study provides useful insights into the removal of PFCs by separable magnetic PAC in wastewater.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess whether the clinical efficacy of a therapeutic protocol using surface neuromuscular electrical stimulation (sNMES) on patients with post-stroke dysphagia (PSD) is superior to that without sNMES, and whether swallowing functional outcome is different with regards to different electrode placement on patients' skin of neck. METHODS Thirty patients with PSD were randomly allocated into treatment group A (TGA), treatment group B (TGB) and control group according to a random number table. The three groups of patients all received traditional dysphagia therapy (TDT) and other general rehabilitation therapy such as physical therapy and occupational therapy as a basic treatment project. Besides this, sNMES treatment was applied on different sites of patients' neck skin in group A and B separately. All the patients received video-fluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) pre-treatment and 2 weeks post-treatment, during which the displacement of the hyolaryngeal complex towards the superior and anterior sides while swallowing semi-liquid diet were measured. Outcome of the VFSS was measured using dysphagia outcome and severity scale (DOSS). RESULTS Post-treatment evaluation was carried out using water swallow test (WST), repetitive saliva swallowing test (RSST) and dysphagia outcome and severity scale (DOSS) from the three study groups were all improved (P< 0.05). The results of post-treatment evaluation using WST from TGA and TGB were 2.40 ± 1.26 and 2.10 ± 0.99 respectively, using RSST from TGA and TGB were 5.30 ± 1.89 and 5.20 ± 1.69 respectively, using DOSS from TGA and TGB were 5.20 ± 1.40 and 5.10 ± 1.45 respectively. Compared to control group, the results of post-treatment evaluation using the three scales, there were significant improvement between TGA and TGB (P< 0.05), however, the inter-group differences of TGA and TGB indicated no statistically significant difference (P> 0.05). The post-treatment evaluation of the moving distance of hyoid bone towards anterior side in swallowing was significantly improved as compared to TGB (-8.40 ± 7.48, t=-3.552, P= 0.006), and was statistically significant as compared to the control group (P> 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Swallowing function in the patients with PSD was significantly improved using TDT combined with NMES. Stimulating electrodes placed at the suprahyoid region or on both suprahyoid and infrahyoid regions resulted in no difference of effect. However, NMES on suprahyoid region could further improve the moving distance of hyoid bone anteriorly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Hemorrhagic transformation (HT) is a major complication of acute ischaemic stroke that is potentially related to clinical deterioration. The objective of this study was to assess whether chronic hyperglycemia is a predictive factor of HT in patients with acute anterior stroke. METHODS Patients with acute anterior stroke were included in this study. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) was measured in the morning after hospitalization. HT was detected by computed tomography scans or gradient echo magnetic resonance imaging performed 4 (±2) days after onset. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to assess the risks for HT and short-term outcomes. RESULTS Of the 426 patients included, 93 (21.8%) had HT: 61 (14.3%) presented with hemorrhagic infarction and 32 (7.5%) presented with parenchymal hematoma. A total of 54 patients received thrombolytic treatment and 18 (33.3%) were found to have HT. In the multivariate analysis, HbA1c [odds ratio (OR), 1.294; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.097-1.528], infarction size (OR, 3.358; 95% CI, 1.748-6.449) and thrombolytic therapy (OR, 3.469; 95% CI, 1.757-6.847) were predictors of HT. The predictive effect of HbA1c on HT was still observed in both groups when patients were stratified according to the levels of fasting blood glucose. HbA1c was found to be a predictor of poor outcomes in the multilogistic regression analysis (OR, 1.482; 95% CI, 1.228-1.788). CONCLUSIONS Higher HbA1c was independently related to HT and poor neurological outcomes in patients with ischaemic stroke. These findings have significant implications for the treatment of diabetes and glucose management in patients with diabetes mellitus and/or acute ischaemic stroke.

Abstract
Aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) used in fire-fighting are one of the main contamination sources of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) to the subterranean environment, requiring high costs for remediation. In this study, a method that combined aeration and foam collection was presented to remove PFOS from a commercially available AFFF solution. The method utilized the strong surfactant properties of PFOS that cause it to be highly enriched at air-water interfaces. With an aeration flow rate of 75 mL/min, PFOS removal percent reached 96% after 2 h, and the PFOS concentration in the collected foam was up to 6.5 mmol/L, beneficial for PFOS recovery and reuse. Increasing the aeration flow rate, ionic strength and concentration of co-existing surfactant, as well as decreasing the initial PFOS concentration, increased the removal percents of PFOS by increasing the foam volume, but reduced the enrichment of PFOS in the foams. With the assistance of a co-existing hydrocarbon surfactant, PFOS removal percent was above 99.9% after aeration-foam collection for 2 h and the enrichment factor exceeded 8400. Aeration-foam collection was less effective for short-chain perfluoroalkyl substances due to their relatively lower surface activity. Aeration-foam collection was found to be effective for the removal of high concentrations of PFOS from AFFF-contaminated wastewater, and the concentrated PFOS in the collected foam can be reused.

Abstract
Aims: Mechanical dyssynchrony has been reported in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), with a majority of patients having a narrow QRS complex; however, whether any benefit is observed with restoration of dyssynchrony remains unclear. We sought to assess left ventricular (LV) dyssynchrony and function in HFpEF and elucidate the underlying mechanisms that may account for HFpEF. Methods: Seventy-eighty patients with a narrow QRS complex including 47 with HFpEF, 31 with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) patients, and 29 with asymptomatic left ventricular diastolic dysfunction (LVDD) were recruited. Forty-five normal subjects acted as controls. Systolic LV longitudinal strain (LS), systolic longitudinal strain rate (LSrS), early diastolic longitudinal strain rate (LSrE), and late diastolic longitudinal strain rate (LSrA) were measured using speckle tracking echocardiography. LV diastolic and systolic dyssynchrony (Te-SD and Ts-SD) were calculated. Results: Te-SD and Ts-SD were prolonged in HFpEF and HFrEF patients than in the control group (p<0.05). However, Ts-SD was shorter in HFpEF patients compared to HFrEF patients despite a narrow QRS complex (p<0.05). LV global LS, LSrS, and LSrE were decreased in patients with HFpEF and HFrEF compared to other groups, with HFrEF being even more reduced than HFpEF (p<0.05). Reduced LS, LSrS, and LSrE could effectively differentiate HF from asymptomatic LVDD patients (p<0.05). Conclusion: HFrEF exhibited increased systolic dyssynchrony compared to HFpEF despite a narrow QRS complex in addition to the more reduced diastolic and systolic function. Therefore, targeting to improve diastolic and systolic function instead of managing systolic dyssynchrony might be of great importance in the treatment of HFpEF.

Abstract
While the neurotrophic factor neuritin is known to be involved in neurodevelopment, the effects of this compound on cell differentiation remain unclear. The present study demonstrated that neuritin treatment induced the differentiation of rat bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (rBM-MSCs) into neuron-like (NL) cells. For these analyses, rBM-MSCs were incubated with 0.5 µg/ml neuritin for 24 h. Following induction, 27% of the rBM-MSCs exhibited typical NL cell morphologies. Subsequently, NL cells were characterized by examining the expression of neuronal markers and by analysis of cell functions. The findings demonstrated that the NL cells produced by neuritin treatment expressed the neuronal markers neuron-specific enolase and microtubule associate protein 2, and secreted the neurotransmitter 5-hydroxytryptamine. Furthermore, the NL cells exhibited certain partial neural-electrophysiological functions. In conclusion, neuritin treatment may be an effective method for inducing the differentiation of BM-MSCs towards NL cells. This may provide an alternative, potentially complementary tool for disease modeling and the development of cell-based therapies.

Abstract
Perfluorocarbon chain of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is not only hydrophobic but also oleophobic, and its effect on PFOS distribution in oil-water mixture and underlying mechanism are unclear. For the first time, we propose that PFOS can emulsify oil-water mixture only in the presence of air, completely different from hydrocarbon surfactants. The perfluorocarbon chain repels hydrophobic compounds and its oleophobicity increases with decreasing polarity of organic solvents. The formed emulsion in oil phase contains high concentrations of PFOS, resulting in PFOS decrease in water. The increase of shaking speed and time as well as oil and air volume all increase the emulsification and decrease PFOS concentrations in water. During the settling process, the emulsion gradually disappears and the concentrated PFOS is released into water. The emulsification mechanism of PFOS based on air bubbles is proposed, and PFOS partitions to the interfaces of air bubbles with the hydro-oleophobic perfluorocarbon chain stretching into air bubbles and the polar head in water. This study clarifies the ambiguous understanding of the oleophobicity of perfluorocarbon chain in PFOS, and it is helpful for the understanding of the transport and fate of PFOS at oil-water interfaces in aquatic environments as well as the enhanced removal of PFOS from wastewater.

Abstract
A bamboo-derived granular activated carbon with large pores was successfully prepared by KOH activation, and used to remove perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) from aqueous solution. The granular activated carbon prepared at the KOH/C mass ratio of 4 and activation temperature of 900°C had fast and high adsorption for PFOS and PFOA. Their adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 24h, which was attributed to their fast diffusion in the micron-sized pores of activated carbon. This granular activated carbon exhibited the maximum adsorbed amount of 2.32mmol/g for PFOS and 1.15mmol/g for PFOA at pH 5.0, much higher than other granular and powdered activated carbons reported. The activated carbon prepared under the severe activation condition contained many enlarged pores, favorable for the adsorption of PFOS and PFOA. In addition, the spent activated carbon was hardly regenerated in NaOH/NaCl solution, while the regeneration efficiency was significantly enhanced in hot water and methanol/ethanol solution, indicating that hydrophobic interaction was mainly responsible for the adsorption. The regeneration percent was up to 98% using 50% ethanol solution at 45°C.

Abstract
Hydrophobic interaction has been considered to be responsible for adsorption of perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) on the surface of hydrophobic adsorbents, but the long C-F chain in PFOS is not only hydrophobic but also oleophobic. In this study, for the first time we propose that air bubbles on the surface of hydrophobic carbonaceous adsorbents play an important role in the adsorption of PFOS. The level of adsorption of PFOS on carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphite (GI), graphene (GE), and powdered activated carbon (PAC) decreases after vacuum degassing. Vacuum degassing time and pressure significantly affect the removal of PFOS by these adsorbents. After vacuum degassing at 0.01 atm for 36 h, the extent of removal of PFOS by the pristine CNTs and GI decreases 79% and 74%, respectively, indicating the main contribution of air bubbles to PFOS adsorption. When the degassed solution is recontacted with air during the adsorption process, the removal of PFOS recovers to the value obtained without vacuum degassing, further verifying the key role of air bubbles in PFOS adsorption. By theoretical calculation, the distribution of PFOS in air bubbles on the adsorbent surfaces is discussed, and a new schematic sorption model of PFOS on carbonaceous adsorbents in the presence of air bubbles is proposed. The accumulation of PFOS at the interface of air bubbles on the adsorbents is primarily responsible for its adsorption, providing a new mechanistic insight into the transport, fate, and removal of PFOS.

Abstract
Classically, as a transcription factor family, the E2Fs are known to regulate the expression of various genes whose products are involved in a multitude of biological functions, many of which are deregulated in diseases including cancers. E2F is deregulated and hyperactive in most human cancers with context dependent, dichotomous and contradictory roles in almost all cancers. Cancer cells have an insatiable demand for transcription to ensure that gene products are available to sustain various biological processes that support their rapid growth and survival. In this context, cutting-off hyperactivity of transcription factors that support transcription dependence could be a valuable therapeutic strategy. However, one of the greatest challenges of targeting a transcription factor is the global effects on non-cancerous cells given that they control cellular functions in general. Recently, there is growing realization regarding the possibility to target the oncogenic activation of transcription factors to modulate transcription addiction without affecting the normal activity required for cell functions. In this review, we used E2F1 as a prototype transcription factor to address transcription factor activity in cancer cell functions. We focused on melanoma considering that E2F1 executes critical functions in response to UV, an etiological factor of cutaneous melanoma and lies immediately downstream of the CDKN2A/pRb axis, which is frequently deregulated in melanoma. Further, activation of E2F1 in melanomas can also occur independent of loss of CDKN2A. Given its activated status and the ability to transcriptionally control a plethora of genes involved in regulating melanoma development and progression, we review the current literature on its differential role in controlling signaling pathways involved in melanoma as well as therapeutic resistance, and discuss the practical value of weaning melanoma cells from E2F1-mediated transcription dependence for melanoma management.

Abstract
Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), commonly known as the Asian longhorned beetle, is an invasive wood-boring pest that infests a number of hardwood species and causes considerable economic losses in North America, several countries in Europe, and in its native range in Asia. The success of eradication efforts may depend on early detection of introduced populations; however, detection has been limited to identification of tree damage (oviposition pits and exit holes), and the serendipitous collection of adults, often by members of the public. Here we describe the development, deployment, and evaluation of semiochemical-baited traps in the greater Worcester area in Massachusetts. Over 4 yr of trap evaluation (2009-2012), 1013 intercept panel traps were deployed, 876 of which were baited with three different families of lures. The families included lures exhibiting different rates of release of the male-produced A. glabripennis pheromone, lures with various combinations of plant volatiles, and lures with both the pheromone and plant volatiles combined. Overall, 45 individual beetles were captured in 40 different traps. Beetles were found only in traps with lures. In several cases, trap catches led to the more rapid discovery and management of previously unknown areas of infestation in the Worcester county regulated area. Analysis of the spatial distribution of traps and the known infested trees within the regulated area provides an estimate of the relationship between trap catch and beetle pressure exerted on the traps. Abstract
The search for the effective and safe a-glucosidase and alpha-amylase inhibitors from Actinomycetaceae being antidiabetic agents is actual problem. Twenty one Streptomyces spp. of soil samples collected from different places of China were screened for the ability to produce this kind of inhibitory activities. Fermentation broth of isolated strains had absorbance between 350-190 nm. The Streptomyces strains PW003, ZG636, and ZG731 were characterized by special absorption at 280, 275, and 400 nm, respectively. Ten of the collected actinomycete strains had the ability to inhibit alpha-glucosidase or/and alpha-amylase and the fermentation broth of the same strain had inhibitory activity varied greatly depending on the enzyme source. In the process to screen the leading compounds used as antidiabetic agents, human alpha-glucosidase and alpha-amylase were revealed as the best used in trail compared with the same enzymes from other sources. Active alpha-glucosidase inhibitor was isolated from Streptomyces strain PW638 fermentation broth and identified as acarviostatin 103 by MS and N MR spectrometry. Its IC50 value was 1.25 and 12.23 microg/mL against human intestinal N-terminal maltase-glucoamylase and human pancreatic alpha-amylase, respectively.

Abstract
Camel is important to the economy of many countries. We report Toxoplasma gondii infection in Bactrian camels (Camelus bactrianus), first for this host. Antibodies to T. gondii were found in sera of 7 of 234 C. bactrianus from Qinghai Province, northwestern China. Sera were tested by a commercial indirect hemagglutination test at a cut-off of 1:64. Age or the gender of the camel did not significantly affect the seroprevalence. Results are of public health and economic importance because camel milk and meat are used for human consumption in many countries, including China.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the age-related change of serum androgen levels in healthy men and to define a cut-off value of serum testosterone for the diagnosis of androgen deficiency in the aging male. METHOD 1080 healthy men aged 20 to 70 years old were enrolled in Beijing, Shanghai, Xian and Chongqing. Luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), total testosterone (T), calculated free testosterone (cFT), sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), 17beta-oestradiol (E2), the T/LH ratio, and T/SHBG as a free testosterone index (FTI) were all determined. RESULTS Serum total T did not significantly decline, but the cFT, T/LH and FTI progressively decreased with aging. To determine androgen deficiency, the 10th percentile value of men < 40 years was defined as the lower cut-off value for cFT, T/LH or FTI, which were 0.3 nmol/L, 2.8 nmol/IU, and 0.4 nmol/IU respectively. With the median value of cFT of men aged between 20 and 49 years as the criterion, the level of cFT was lower in 2.82% of men from 40 to 49 years, in 19.53% from 50 to 59 years, in 22.57% from 60 to 69 years, and in 33.19% of men > or = 70 years. Taking the above value of cFT as the cut-off point, the prevalence of androgen deficiency in men 40-49 years was 13.0%, 31.8% in men 50-59 years, 30.1% in men 60 to 69 years, and 46.7% in men > 70 years. CONCLUSIONS (i). While serum total T values do not decline with aging, the levels of cFT gradually decline with aging; (ii) when using the value of cFT of the 10th percentile of men aged 20 to 39 years as the cut-off point, the prevalence of androgen deficiency was < 15% before the age of 50 years, and about 30% thereafter, approaching 45% after the age of 70 years; and (iii) in this study the values of T/LH paralleled those of cFT closely; therefore, T/LH could serve as a surrogate for cFT.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the clinical effect of the treatment of infantile viral myocarditis with puerarin. METHODS Puerarin was administered intravenously together with conventional treatment in the treated group, while that of conventional treatment solely was given in the control group. Creatine kinase isoenzyme, lactate dehydrogenase isoenzyme, cardiac function and clinical manifestations before and after treatment were observed. RESULTS Puerarin could significantly relieve the symptoms of patients of infantile viral myocarditis, enhance the metabolism of myocardium and improve the cardiac function. The total effective rate of the treated group was 87.04%, significantly higher than that of the control group, the difference between them was significant (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Puerarin can be used to treat patients with infantile viral myocarditis with a satisfactory result.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore factors for differentiating non-Hodgkin's lymphoma cell leukemia (NHLCL) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). METHODS Leukocyte glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and GR mRNA levels were measured in 22 NHLCL, 18 ALL, 10 chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) patients and 6 healthy subjects by using radio-ligand binding assay and molecular hybridization using GR cDNA as the probe. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS The leukocyte GR and GR mRNA levels were significantly different between NHLCL and ALL(P < 0.01), and could be used as parameters for differential diagnosis of these two types of leukemia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the respiratory tract infections by Mg, M. genitalium (Mpn), Cpn, and co-infections by these agents in pediatric patients. METHODS Mg DNA, Mpn DNA and Cpn DNA were detected in respiratory tract specimens obtained by throat swab from 231 children by the nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. DNA sequencings were detected and analysed between every two positive specimens of Mg and Cpn and typical strains. RESULTS Positive rates of Mg DNA, Mpn DNA and Cpn DNA by nested PCR in 231 children were 22.5%, 30.7% and 32.9%. The Positive rates of co-infection were 5.2% (Mg and Mpn), 2.6% (Mg and Cpn), 10.8% (Mpn and Cpn) and 8.7% (Mg and Mpn and Cpn). There was only one base mutation in 1 Mg DNA. Other DNA sequencings were same as those from model strains. The homogeneity was 99.8%. CONCLUSIONS Mg could be one of the pathogens in respiratory tract infections in pediatric patients. There exists co-infection by Mg, Mpn and Cpn.

Abstract
A convenient and efficient method for analysis of phthalate esters (PEs) in plants was developed. PEs in plants were extracted with dichloromethane by ultrasonication, separated by chromatography with a column chromatography packed with 10-40microm sillica and then determined by HPLC on a 250mm x 4.6mm i.d. ODS column using MeOH/H2O (88:12) as mobile phase and UV detection at 228nm. The minimum detectable limits for diethyl phthalate (DEP) and diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) were 47pg and 85pg respectively. The overall recoveries of PEs were found to be 85%-101%. The method has been satisfactorily applied to the determination of plant samples.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the safety and effects of gene therapy for hemophilia B by implantation of autologous fibroblasts genetically modified to secrete clotting factor IX (hFIX). PATIENTS AND METHODS Two hemophilia B patients LD and LW were selected from one family to accept gene transfer study. The hFIX protein of both patients were about 100 ng/ml plasma and hFIX activity was about 2%. The autologous skin fibroblasts of the two patients were genetically modified by retrovirus-mediated gene transfer with XL-IX and N2CMVIX vector (HBSF-IX). Human hFIX protein was measured by ELISA, hFIX activity was measured by one-stage clotting assay and barium citrate sorbent method. hFIX inhibitor was assayed by Bethesda methods. Human hFIX cDNA was detected by PCR. HBSF-IX cells were mixed with collagen for injection after safety assessments. RESULTS The HBSF-IX cells from the two patients secreted hFIX at high levels in vitro. After implantation of autologous HBSF-IX cells, no treatment-related side effects were observed. Plasma hFIX protein in both patients increased over 2 folds after several injections of HBSF-IX cells and persisted for more than 420 days. Blood clotting activity increased significantly in both patients, hemorrhagic tendencies have been partially corrected after treatment. Further elevation of hFIX can be achieved by repeating the same treatment 420 days later in Patient LD. CONCLUSIONS Implantation of autologous fibroblast genetically modified to secrete human hFIX offers a simple, safe and effective approach to gene therapy of hemophilia B.

Abstract
Research work for making a biomedical signal processing instrument based on the APPLE-II computer is reported in this paper. According to the theory of the computer, two interface boards were designed as the hardware of the instrument. The memorizing waveform program was designed as the main program in the software system. Through a functional extended program, also called software inter face, more than ten programs especially for physiology can be easily linked to the main program. with the combination of both the software and hard ware several parameters of the instrument, such as sampling speed, gain of the amplifier, etc. can be controlled by a closed loop. This instrument is available in the physiology laboratory to replace oscilloscope, recorder, stimulator simultaneously. The functions of the instrument are stronger than those of the conventional instruments.
