Influence of particle architecture on the photoluminescence properties of silica-coated CdSe core/shell quantum dots

Water-Soluble Quantum Dots for Inkjet Printing Color Conversion Films with Simultaneous High Efficiency and Stability

Water-soluble quantum dots (QDs) are necessary to prepare patterned pixels or films for high-resolution displays with less environmental burden but are very limited by the trade-off between photoluminescence and stability of QDs. In this work, we proposed synthesizing water-soluble QDs with simultaneous excellent luminescence properties and high stability by coating the amphiphilic poly(maleic anhydride-alt-1-octadecene)-ethanol amine (PMAO-EA) polymer on the surface of silane-treated QDs. These coated QDs show a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) as high as 94%, and they have good photoluminescence stability against light irradiation and thermal attacks, owing to the suppression of the nonradiative recombination by the polymer layer and the isolation of oxygen and water by the silica layer. The water-soluble QDs, mixed with ethylene glycol, enable inkjet printing of QD color conversion films (QD-CCFs) with an average diameter of 68 μm for each pixel and a high PLQY of 91%. The QD-CCFs are demonstrated to fabricate red-emitting mini-LEDs by combining with blue mini-LED chips, which have an external quantum efficiency as high as 25.86% and a luminance of 2.44 × 107 cd/m2. We believe that the proposed strategy is applicable to other water-soluble QDs and paves an avenue for inkjet printing environmentally friendly QD-CCFs for mini/micro-LED displays.

ZnS QDs Stabilized Concurrently with Glutathione and L-cysteine for Highly Sensitive Determining Adriamycin Based on the Fluorescence Enhancement Mechanism

In this work, a facile and fast aqueous-phase synthetic method is proposed to prepare water-soluble ZnS quantum dots stabilized simultaneously with glutathione and L-cysteine (ZnS QDs-GSH/L-Cys). As-synthesized ZnS QDs-GSH/L-Cys were monodispersed spherical nanocrystals with a mean diameter of 5.0 ± 0.7 nm. Besides, the obtained ZnS QDs-GSH/L-Cys emitted more intensive blue fluorescence and exhibited an improved stability in aqueous solution compared with ZnS quantum dots merely stabilized with GSH (ZnS QDs-GSH). Interestingly, Adriamycin, a representative anticancer drug, was added into the solution of ZnS QDs-GSH/L-Cys, the blue fluorescence of ZnS QDs-GSH/L-Cys was greatly enhanced instead of being quenched, which indicated that ZnS QDs-GSH/L-Cys can be used as an enhanced-fluorescence nanoprobe for determining Adriamycin. The observed fluorescent enhancement could be attributed to the blocking of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) in ZnS QDs-GSH/L-Cys due to the electrostatic interaction between the -COO- groups on the surface of quantum dots and the -NH3+ groups in Adriamycin, followed by the coordination interaction among ZnS QDs-GSH/L-Cys and Adriamycin. The fluorescence intensity of ZnS QDs-GSH/L-Cys presented a good linear response with the concentration of Adriamycin ranging from 2.0 to 20 µg•mL-1. The proposed fluorescent nanoprobe exhibited an excellent sensitivity with the LOD of 0.1 µg•mL-1 and a good accuracy for detecting Adriamycin.

Fluorescent Alloyed CdZnSeS/ZnS Nanosensor for Doxorubicin Detection

Doxorubicin (DOX) is widely used in chemotherapy as an anti-tumor drug. However, DOX is highly cardio-, neuro- and cytotoxic. For this reason, the continuous monitoring of DOX concentrations in biofluids and tissues is important. Most methods for the determination of DOX concentrations are complex and costly, and are designed to determine pure DOX. The purpose of this work is to demonstrate the capabilities of analytical nanosensors based on the quenching of the fluorescence of alloyed CdZnSeS/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) for operative DOX detection. To maximize the nanosensor quenching efficiency, the spectral features of QDs and DOX were carefully studied, and the complex nature of QD fluorescence quenching in the presence of DOX was shown. Using optimized conditions, turn-off fluorescence nanosensors for direct DOX determination in undiluted human plasma were developed. A DOX concentration of 0.5 µM in plasma was reflected in a decrease in the fluorescence intensity of QDs, stabilized with thioglycolic and 3-mercaptopropionic acids, for 5.8 and 4.4 %, respectively. The calculated Limit of Detection values were 0.08 and 0.03 μg/mL using QDs, stabilized with thioglycolic and 3-mercaptopropionic acids, respectively.

Deterministic Quantum Light Arrays from Giant Silica-Shelled Quantum Dots

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are promising candidates for single-photon sources with applications in photonic quantum information technologies. Developing practical photonic quantum devices with colloidal materials, however, requires scalable deterministic placement of stable single QD emitters. In this work, we describe a method to exploit QD size to facilitate deterministic positioning of single QDs into large arrays while maintaining their photostability and single-photon emission properties. CdSe/CdS core/shell QDs were encapsulated in silica to both increase their physical size without perturbing their quantum-confined emission and enhance their photostability. These giant QDs were then precisely positioned into ordered arrays using template-assisted self-assembly with a 75% yield for single QDs. We show that the QDs before and after assembly exhibit antibunching behavior at room temperature and their optical properties are retained after an extended period of time. Together, this bottom-up synthetic approach via silica shelling and the robust template-assisted self-assembly offer a unique strategy to produce scalable quantum photonics platforms using colloidal QDs as single-photon emitters.

Enhancing oxygen/moisture resistance of quantum dots by short-chain, densely cross-linked silica glass network

Quantum dots (QDs) are facing significant photoluminescence degradation in moisture environment. In QDs-silicone composites, the poor water resistance of silicone matrix makes it easy for water and oxygen molecules to erode QDs. To tackle this issue, we proposed a new QDs protection strategy by introducing short-chain silica precursors onto the QDs' surface, so that a dense silica passivation layer could be formed onto the QDs nanoparticles. Sol-gel method based on 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (APTES), 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane (MPTMS), and 3-mercaptopropyl triethoxysilane (MPTES) were adopted to prepare the uniform and crack-free QDs-silica glass (QD-glass). Because of the crosslinking of short-chain precursors, the formed silica glass possesses 38.6% smaller pore width and 68.6% lower pore volume than silicone, indicating its denser cross-linked network surrounding QDs. After 360 h water immersion, the QDs-glass demonstrated a 6% enhancement in red-light peak intensity, and maintained a stable full width at half maximum (FWHM) and peak wavelength, proving its excellent water-resistant ability. However, the conventional QDs-silicone composites not only showed a decrease of 75.3% in red-light peak intensity, but also a broadened FWHM and a redshifted peak wavelength after water immersion. QDs-glass also showed superior photostability after 132 h exposure to blue light. Red-light peak intensity of QDs-glass remained 87.3% of the initial while that of QDs-silicone decreased to 19.8%. And the intensity of QDs-glass dropped to 62.3% of that under 20 °C after thermal treatment of 160 °C. Besides, under increasing driving currents, the light conversion efficiency drop of QDs-glass is only one fifth that of QDs-silicone. Based on the QDs-glass, the white light-emitting diodes was achieved with a high luminous efficiency of 126.5 lm W^-1and a high color rendering index of 95.4. Thus, the newly proposed QD-glass has great significance in guaranteeing the working reliability of QDs-converted devices against moisture and high-power environment.
