Influence of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Learning Preferences and Perspectives of Generation Y and Z Students in Dental Education

Objectives

For the first time in history, the COVID‐19 pandemic required students at The University of Texas School of Dentistry (UTSD) to move to remote education. Based on a literature review, it was assumed that younger generations of students would prefer virtual teaching models over in‐classroom formats. The purpose of this study is to assess students' perspectives of remote learning during COVID‐19 in dental education relative to their generation and programme.

Methods

An electronic survey was administered to all UTSD dental and dental hygiene students via Qualtrics. The survey collected information on demographics, pre‐pandemic learning preferences, remote learning experiences during the pandemic, and a free response section. Descriptive statistics and Fisher's exact test were used to analyse data.

Results

The survey received a 60% response rate (n = 290). Over 95% of respondents belonged to Generations Y and Z. There were no significant differences in responses between generations. However, significant differences in responses between programmes arose with more dental hygiene students agreed that they liked learning in a classroom setting compared to dental students (p < 0.01). Significantly more dental students agreed that they stayed organized, were less stressed, and felt that the transition to online learning was easy compared to dental hygiene students (p < 0.01).

Conclusion

Although the majority of students surveyed belong to Generations Y and Z, there are still preferences for traditional, in‐person learning. Both cohorts recognized the benefits and challenges of distance learning, and the findings from this study shed light on how students are handling remote learning in dental education.

I.C.A.R.U.S. in Flight: A Radiology Simulator Teaches Imaging Appropriateness, Anatomy, and Image Interpretation Skills

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES

The Interactive Clinical Anatomy and Radiology Utilization Simulator (ICARUS) was created in 2012 as a novel simulation program with 25 peer reviewed electronic modules combining simulated patient encounters, American College of Radiology appropriateness criteria, radiologic anatomy, and basic imaging interpretation and patient safety topics. ICARUS integrates a gaming approach to improve student engagement.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

ICARUS modules have been used in the undergraduate medical curriculum at the lead author's institution since its pilot in 2012. Since completion of the full complement of 25 modules, modules have been used in the radiology clerkship (2012- 2015), in the integrated longitudinal curriculum (2015-present), and in various radiology electives (2015-present), including the inaugural virtual radiology electives at all authors' institutions (July 2020-present). Student evaluations were formally solicited in 2014 and again in 2020.

RESULTS

During the introductory radiology clerkship in 2014, 107 students were enrolled. Students were assigned 4 ICARUS modules. During the 2-week virtual elective from July-October 2020, 26 students were enrolled. Students were assigned all 25 modules. The majority of survey respondents "agreed" or "strongly agreed" that the modules were interactive, enjoyable, and self-directed, fostered critical thinking, provided practical value, met goals and objectives of the course, and seemed practical to their future practice.

CONCLUSION

ICARUS integrates key educational concepts in radiology with high fidelity simulation of clinical decision support software and PACS simulation image display to create a highly engaging learning environment that most accurately reflects future clinical experiences.

Communication Skills Training for Internal Medicine Residents Using a Brief Animated Video

Patient communication courses are time-intensive, making incorporation into residency curricula challenging. Using a short video could be an efficient means to teach residents communication skills. We created a 4-min animated video focused on the "ask more and summarize technique". Residents rotating on the inpatient oncology and palliative care service received a video link with a survey (S1) on the tool and its projected utility. A second survey (S2) was sent upon rotation completion to assess the utility of the technique. A 6-month follow up e-mail was sent to determine retention of skills. A total of 52/106 residents responded to S1 and 32/52 to S2. Median age was 28 years and 86% were PGY-1. On S1, 95% enjoyed the format, and 95% thought the narration was an effective learning tool and 90% that the animation was effective. A majority (87%) felt the tool would be useful. On comparing self-reported acquisition of skills for paired survey responses, there was a significant increase in asking more regarding patient questions (p = 0.04) but not summarizing back responses (p = 0.1). This tool was reported to be useful in a variety of settings including explaining prognoses, unrealistic patient expectations, upset patients, and patients with fear or anxiety. A 6-month follow up survey (n = 22) showed that almost all the respondents continued to report using the skills learned. A short video is a brief and effective tool that can be incorporated into a busy clinical curriculum to teach residents communication skills in the areas of cancer and palliative care.

We familiarize the reader with Quick Response codes and demonstrate a few of the simple ways they can be incorporated into radiology lectures to increase audience engagement including reference dissemination, audience participation, surveys and quizzes.
