Nanomaterials: new weapons in a crusade against phytopathogens

Biologically inspired nanoformulations for the control of bacterial canker pathogens Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis and subsp. capsici

Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis (Cmm) and C. michiganensis subsp. capsici (Cmc) are phytopathogenic bacteria that cause bacterial canker disease in tomatoes and peppers, respectively. Bacterial canker disease poses serious challenges to solanaceous crops, causing significant yield losses and economic costs. Effective management necessitates the development of sustainable control strategies employing nanobiotechnology. In this study, the antibacterial effects of four Aspergillus sojae-mediated nanoformulations, including cobalt oxide nanoparticles (Co3O4 NPs), zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), cobalt ferrite nanoparticles (CoFe2O4 NPs), and CoFe2O4/functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube (fMWCNT) bionanocomposite, were evaluated against Cmm and Cmc. The diameters of the zone of inhibition of A. sojae-mediated Co3O4 NPs, ZnO NPs, CoFe2O4 NPs, and CoFe2O4/fMWCNT bionanocomposite against Cmm and Cmc were 23.60 mm, 22.09 mm, 27.65 mm, 22.51 mm, and 19.33 mm, 17.66 mm, 21.64 mm, 18.77 mm, respectively. The broth microdilution assay was conducted to determine the minimal inhibitory and bactericidal concentrations. The MICs of Co3O4 NPs, ZnO NPs, CoFe2O4 NPs, and CoFe2O4/fMWCNT bionanocomposite against Cmm were 2.50 mg/mL, 1.25 mg/mL, 2.50 mg/mL, and 2.50 mg/mL, respectively. While, their respective MBCs against Cmm were 5.00 mg/mL, 2.50 mg/mL, 5.00 mg/mL, and 5.00 mg/mL. The respective MICs of Co3O4 NPs, ZnO NPs, CoFe2O4 NPs, and CoFe2O4/fMWCNT bionanocomposite against Cmc were 2.50 mg/mL, 1.25 mg/mL, 5.00 mg/mL, and 5.00 mg/mL. While, their respective MBCs against Cmc were 5.00 mg/mL, 2.50 mg/mL, 10.00 mg/mL, and 10.00 mg/mL. The morphological and ultrastructural changes of Cmm and Cmc cells were observed using field-emission scanning and transmission electron microscopy before and after treatment with sub-minimal inhibitory concentrations of the nanoformulations. Nanoformulation-treated bacterial cells became deformed and disrupted, displaying pits, deep cavities, and groove-like structures. The cell membrane detached from the bacterial cell wall, electron-dense particles accumulated in the cytoplasm, cellular components disintegrated, and the cells were lysed. Direct physical interactions between the prepared nanoformulations with Cmm and Cmc cells might be the major mechanism for their antibacterial potency. Further research is required for the in vivo application of the mycosynthesized nanoformulations as countermeasures to combat bacterial phytopathogens.

A Comprehensive Review of Climate Change and Plant Diseases in Brazil

Analyzing the impacts of climate change on phytosanitary problems in Brazil is crucial due to the country's special role in global food security as one of the largest producers of essential commodities. This review focuses on the effects of climate change on plant diseases and discusses its main challenges in light of Brazil's diverse agricultural landscape. To assess the risk of diseases caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses, oomycetes, nematodes, and spiroplasms, we surveyed 304 pathosystems across 32 crops of economic importance from 2005 to 2022. Results show that diseases caused by fungi account for 79% of the pathosystems evaluated. Predicting the occurrence of diseases in a changing climate is a complex challenge, and the continuity of this work is strategic for Brazil's agricultural defense. The future risk scenarios analyzed here aim to help guide disease mitigation for cropping systems. Despite substantial progress and ongoing efforts, further research will be needed to effectively prevent economic and environmental damage.

Biofabricated nanomaterials in sustainable agriculture: insights, challenges and prospects

One ever-evolving and ever-demanding critical human endeavour is the provision of food security for the growing world population. This can be done by adopting sustainable agriculture through horizontal (expanding the arable land area) and vertical (intensifying agriculture through sound technological approaches) interventions. Customized formulated nanomaterials have numerous advantages. With their specialized physico-chemical properties, some nanoparticulated materials improve the plant's natural development and stress tolerance and some others are good nanocarriers. Nanocarriers in agriculture often coat chemicals to form composites having utilities with crop productivity enhancement abilities, environmental management (such as ecotoxicity reduction ability) and biomedicines (such as the ability to control and target the release of useful nanoscale drugs). Ag, Fe, Zn, TiO2, ZnO, SiO2and MgO nanoparticles (NPs), often employed in advanced agriculture, are covered here. Some NPs used for various extended purposes in modern farming practices, including disease diagnostics and seed treatment are also covered. Thus, nanotechnology has revolutionized agrotechnology, which holds promise to transform agricultural (ecosystems as a whole to ensure food security in the future. Considering the available literature, this article further probes the emergent regulatory issues governing the synthesis and use of nanomaterials in the agriculture sector. If applied responsibly, nanomaterials could help improve soil health. This article provides an overview of the nanomaterials used in the distribution of biomolecules, to aid in devising a safer and eco-friendly sustainable agriculture strategy. Through this, agri-systems that depend on advanced farming practices might function more effectively and enhance agri-productivity to meet the food demand of the rising world population.

Antifungal Properties of Bio-AgNPs against D. pinodes and F. avenaceum Infection of Pea (Pisum sativum L.) Seedlings

Ascochyta blight and Fusarium root rot are the most serious fungal diseases of pea, caused by D. pinodes and F. avenaceum, respectively. Due to the lack of fully resistant cultivars, we proposed the use of biologically synthesized silver nanoparticles (bio-AgNPs) as a novel protecting agent. In this study, we evaluated the antifungal properties and effectiveness of bio-AgNPs, in in vitro (poisoned food technique; resazurin assay) and in vivo (seedlings infection) experiments, against D. pinodes and F. avenaceum. Moreover, the effects of diseases on changes in the seedlings' metabolic profiles were analyzed. The MIC for spores of both fungi was 125 mg/L, and bio-AgNPs at 200 mg/L most effectively inhibited the mycelium growth of D. pinodes and F. avenaceum (by 45 and 26%, respectively, measured on the 14th day of incubation). The treatment of seedlings with bio-AgNPs or fungicides before inoculation prevented the development of infection. Bio-AgNPs at concentrations of 200 mg/L for D. pinodes and 100 mg/L for F. avenaceum effectively inhibited infections' spread. The comparison of changes in polar metabolites' profiles revealed disturbances in carbon and nitrogen metabolism in pea seedlings by both pathogenic fungi. The involvement of bio-AgNPs in the mobilization of plant metabolism in response to fungal infection is also discussed.

Comparing the antibacterial activity of chitin nanocrystals with chitin: exploring the feasibility of chitin nanocrystals as novel pesticide nanocarriers in agriculture

BACKGROUND

In recent years, nanomaterials-based pesticide carriers have garnered significant attention and sparked extensive research. However, most studies have primarily focused on investigating the impact of physical properties of nanomaterials, such as size and modifiable sites, on drug delivery efficiency of nano-pesticides. The limited exploration of biologically active nanomaterials poses a significant obstacle to the advancement and widespread adoption of nano-pesticides. In this study, we prepared chitin nanocrystals (ChNC) based on acid hydrolysis and systematically investigated the differences between nano- and normal chitin against plant bacteria (Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci). The primary objective was to seek out nanocarriers with heightened biological activity for the synthesis of nano-pesticides.

RESULTS

Zeta potential analysis, Fourier Transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) identified the successful synthesis of ChNC. ChNC showcased remarkable bactericidal activity at comparable concentrations, surpassing that of chitin, particularly in its ability to inhibit bacterial biofilm formation. Furthermore, ChNC displayed heightened effectiveness in disrupting bacterial cell membranes, resulting in the leakage of bacterial cell contents, structural DNA damage, and impairment of DNA replication. Lastly, potting experiments revealed that ChNC is notably more effective in inhibiting the spread and propagation of bacteria on plant leaves.

CONCLUSION

ChNC exhibited higher antibacterial activity compared to chitin, enabling efficient control of plant bacterial diseases through enhanced interaction with bacteria. These findings offer compelling evidence of ChNC's superior bacterial inhibition capabilities, underscoring its potential as a promising nanocarrier for nano-pesticide research. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Harmonization Risks and Rewards: Nano-QSAR for Agricultural Nanomaterials

This comprehensive review explores the emerging landscape of Nano-QSAR (quantitative structure-activity relationship) for assessing the risk and potency of nanomaterials in agricultural settings. The paper begins with an introduction to Nano-QSAR, providing background and rationale, and explicitly states the hypotheses guiding the review. The study navigates through various dimensions of nanomaterial applications in agriculture, encompassing their diverse properties, types, and associated challenges. Delving into the principles of QSAR in nanotoxicology, this article elucidates its application in evaluating the safety of nanomaterials, while addressing the unique limitations posed by these materials. The narrative then transitions to the progression of Nano-QSAR in the context of agricultural nanomaterials, exemplified by insightful case studies that highlight both the strengths and the limitations inherent in this methodology. Emerging prospects and hurdles tied to Nano-QSAR in agriculture are rigorously examined, casting light on important pathways forward, existing constraints, and avenues for research enhancement. Culminating in a synthesis of key insights, the review underscores the significance of Nano-QSAR in shaping the future of nanoenabled agriculture. It provides strategic guidance to steer forthcoming research endeavors in this dynamic field.

A high rain-erosion resistant bio-based nanogel with continuous immunity induction for plant virus inhibition

Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) is the most widely spread and harmful virus in the world, causing serious economic losses annually. However, the low anti-erosion ability of the pesticides for TMV management make it easy to be washed by the rain, which makes the effective duration of the pesticides shorter. In this paper, a new bio-based nanogel with superior antiviral activity was reported, and its slow-release behavior, rain erosion resistance and the antiviral mechanism was systematically studied. The results determined that the nanogels (Zn2+@ALGNP and Zn2+@ALGNP@PL) exhibited sustained releasing of Zn2+ with a 7 days duration, and the ε-PL coating could enhance the releasing rate of Zn2+. Moreover, Zn2+@ALGNP@PL displayed a lower contact angle, indicating greater adhesion to the leaf surface, and in consequence imposed better resistance to simulate rain erosion than pure Zn2+. Strikingly, Zn2+@ALGNP@PL could inhibit plant virus infection by aggregating the virions and reducing its coat protein stability, as well as inducing the efficient expression of reactive oxygen species, antioxidant enzymes and resistance genes to enhance plant resistance and promote plant growth. Overall, this study had successfully developed a high rain-erosion resistant bio-based nanogel capable of continue to induce resistant plants and promote plant growth.

Response of Maize Seedlings to Silicon Dioxide Nanoparticles (SiO2NPs) under Drought Stress

Recently, the use of nanofertilizers has received a great deal of attention in managing plants under biotic and abiotic stresses. However, studies that elucidate the role of silicon dioxide nanoparticles (SiO₂NPs) in regulating maize tolerance to drought stress are still at early stages of development. In this study, plants that were treated with SiO₂NPs (0.25 g/L as foliar spray) displayed considerable improvement in the growth indices, despite being subjected to drought stress. In addition, the action of SiO₂NPs led to a considerable rise in the levels of chlorophylls, proline, cell membrane integrity, leaf water content, and antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and guaiacol peroxidase (G-POX)). In contrast, an inverse trend was seen in the oxidative injury, the total amount of soluble sugars, and the activity of ascorbate peroxidase (APX). At the same time, carotenoids were unaffected in SiO₂NPs-treated and non-treated plants under drought stress. The results of the molecular investigation that was conducted using qRT-PCR showed that the relative expression of the D2 protein of photosystem II (PsbD) was elevated in SiO₂NPs-treated plants in response to drought stress, while the expression of the osmotic-like protein (OSM-34) and aquaporin (AQPs) was downregulated in SiO₂NPs-treated plants in response to drought stress. This research could pave the way for further investigations into how SiO₂NPs boost plant resistance to drought stress.

Molecular Mechanisms Determining the Role of Bacteria from the Genus Azospirillum in Plant Adaptation to Damaging Environmental Factors

Agricultural plants are continuously exposed to environmental stressors, which can lead to a significant reduction in yield and even the death of plants. One of the ways to mitigate stress impacts is the inoculation of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), including bacteria from the genus Azospirillum, into the rhizosphere of plants. Different representatives of this genus have different sensitivities or resistances to osmotic stress, pesticides, heavy metals, hydrocarbons, and perchlorate and also have the ability to mitigate the consequences of such stresses for plants. Bacteria from the genus Azospirillum contribute to the bioremediation of polluted soils and induce systemic resistance and have a positive effect on plants under stress by synthesizing siderophores and polysaccharides and modulating the levels of phytohormones, osmolytes, and volatile organic compounds in plants, as well as altering the efficiency of photosynthesis and the antioxidant defense system. In this review, we focus on molecular genetic features that provide bacterial resistance to various stress factors as well as on Azospirillum-related pathways for increasing plant resistance to unfavorable anthropogenic and natural factors.

Recent Advances in Nano-Enabled Seed Treatment Strategies for Sustainable Agriculture: Challenges, Risk Assessment, and Future Perspectives

Agro seeds are vulnerable to environmental stressors, adversely affecting seed vigor, crop growth, and crop productivity. Different agrochemical-based seed treatments enhance seed germination, but they can also cause damage to the environment; therefore, sustainable technologies such as nano-based agrochemicals are urgently needed. Nanoagrochemicals can reduce the dose-dependent toxicity of seed treatment, thereby improving seed viability and ensuring the controlled release of nanoagrochemical active ingredients However, the applications of nanoagrochemicals to plants in the field raise concerns about nanomaterial safety, exposure levels, and toxicological implications to the environment and human health. In the present comprehensive review, the development, scope, challenges, and risk assessments of nanoagrochemicals on seed treatment are discussed. Moreover, the implementation obstacles for nanoagrochemicals use in seed treatments, their commercialization potential, and the need for policy regulations to assess possible risks are also discussed. Based on our knowledge, this is the first time that we have presented legendary literature to readers in order to help them gain a deeper understanding of upcoming nanotechnologies that may enable the development of future generation seed treatment agrochemical formulations, their scope, and potential risks associated with seed treatment.

Novel biosynthesis of MnO NPs using Mycoendophyte: industrial bioprocessing strategies and scaling-up production with its evaluation as anti-phytopathogenic agents

This report provides the first description of the myco-synthesis of rod-shaped MnO NPs with an average crystallite size of ~ 35 nm, employing extracellular bioactive metabolites of endophytic Trichoderma virens strain EG92 as capping/reducing agents and MnCl₂·4H₂O as a parent component. The wheat bran medium was chosen to grow endophytic strain EG92, which produced a variety of bioactive metabolites in extracellular fraction, which increases the yield of MnO NPs to 9.53 g/l. The whole medium and fungal growth conditions that influenced biomass generation were optimized as successive statistical optimization approaches (Plackett-Burman and Box-Behnken designs). The production improvements were achieved at pH 5.5, WBE (35%), and inoculum size (10%), which increased X_max to twelve-folds (89.63 g/l); thereby, P_max increased to eight-folds (82.93 g/l). After 162 h, X_max (145.63 g/l) and P_max (99.52 g/l) on the side of µ_max and Y_X/S were determined as 0.084 and 7.65, respectively. Via Taguchi experimental design, fungus-fabricated MnO NPs reaction was improved by adding 0.25 M of MnCl₂·4H₂O to 100% of fungal extract (reducing/capping agents) and adjusting the reaction pH adjusted to ~ 5. This reaction was incubated at 60 °C for 5 h before adding 20% fungal extract (stabilizing agent). Also, P_max was raised 40-fold (395.36 g/l) over the BC. Our myco-synthesized MnO NPs exhibit faster and more precise antagonistic actions against phytopathogenic bacteria than fungi; they could be employed as an alternative and promised nano-bio-pesticide to manage a variety of different types of disease-pathogens in the future.

The Size-Dependent Effects of Silver Nanoparticles on Germination, Early Seedling Development and Polar Metabolite Profile of Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

The phytotoxicity of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) to plant seeds germination and seedlings development depends on nanoparticles properties and concentration, as well as plant species and stress tolerance degrees. In the present study, the effect of citrate-stabilized spherical Ag NPs (20 mg/L) in sizes of 10, 20, 40, 60, and 100 nm, on wheat grain germination, early seedlings development, and polar metabolite profile in 3-day-old seedlings were analyzed. Ag NPs, regardless of their sizes, did not affect the germination of wheat grains. However, the smaller nanoparticles (10 and 20 nm in size) decreased the growth of seedling roots. Although the concentrations of total polar metabolites in roots, coleoptile, and endosperm of seedlings were not affected by Ag NPs, significant re-arrangements of carbohydrates profiles in seedlings were noted. In roots and coleoptile of 3-day-old seedlings, the concentration of sucrose increased, which was accompanied by a decrease in glucose and fructose. The concentrations of most other polar metabolites (amino acids, organic acids, and phosphate) were not affected by Ag NPs. Thus, an unknown signal is released by small-sized Ag NPs that triggers affection of sugars metabolism and/or distribution.

Synergetic Antimicrobial Effect of Silver Nanoparticles Conjugated with Iprodione against Valsa mali

Apple tree canker induced by Valsamali is a vital disease in apple production around the world, and it highlyimpacts the development of apple industry. It is of great significance to study the inhibition effect of common fungicides and develop new fungistats for comprehensive control of apple tree canker. In this experiment, the inhibition activity of five fungicides, including mancozeb, metalaxyl, iprodione, prochloraz, and difenoconazole along with biosynthesized nanosilver against V. mali, were measured with the mycelium growth rate and agar well diffusion methods. The results showed that iprodione exhibited the best inhibitory effect, the median inhibition concentration (IC₅₀) of iprodione and nanosilver was 0.62 μg.mL⁻¹ and 45.50 μg.mL⁻¹, the suppression rate achieved 67.93% at 200 μg.mL⁻¹ of nanosilver. Moreover, a remarkable additive and synergistic antimicrobial effect was verified when silver nanoparticles were conjugated with iprodione at 9:1, 8:2, 7:3, and 6:4 (v/v), and the toxicity ratio was 1.04, 1.13, 1.01, and 0.98, respectively. It is proven that biosynthesized silver nanoparticles could effectively inhibit Valsamali, and it is possible to develop and screen silver nanoparticle-based nano pesticides to manage plant diseases synthetically.

Potential of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles in plant disease diagnostics and management: Recent advances and challenges

Plant diseases caused by phytopathogens are a severe threat to global food production. Management of plant diseases mostly rely on the application of pesticides which have several adverse effects on the ecosystem. Innovative and high-performance diagnostic tools are useful for the early detection of phytopathogens. Emerging role of metal and metal oxides nanoparticles (NPs) in plant disease diagnostics to combat crop diseases has been described. These NPs constitute new weapons against plant pathogens and facilitate the early diagnosis/management of crop diseases specifically in resource-poor conditions. The interactions between NPs, phytopathogens and plants showed great diversity and multiplicity which reduces chances of the development of resistant pathogen strains. The present article discusses the available literature as well as challenges and research gaps that are essential in the successful utilization of metal and metal oxide NPs for precise and timely detection and management of plant diseases.

Carbon Dots in the Detection of Pathogenic Bacteria and Viruses

Bacterial and viruses pathogens are a significant hazard to human safety and health. In the imaging and detection of pathogenic microorganisms, the application of fluorescent nanoparticles is very useful. Carbon dots and quantum dots are preferred in this regard as labels, amplifiers, and/or electrode modifiers because of their outstanding features. However, precise diagnostics to identify numerous harmful bacteria simultaneously still face considerable hurdles, yet it is an inevitable issue. With the growing development of biosensors, nanoproduct-based bio-sensing has recently become one of the most promising methods for accurately identifying and quantifying various pathogens at low cost, high sensitivity, and selectivity, with time savings. The most recent applications of carbon dots in optical and electrochemical-based sensors are discussed in this review, along with some examples of pathogen sensors.HighlightsSimultaneous and early detection of pathogens is a critical issue in the management of readily spread to prevent epidemics.Carbon dots-based biosensors are more preferred in detection of pathogens due to high selectivity and sensitivity, as well as quick and cheap point-of-care platform.Summary of recent advances in the design of optical and electrochemical biosensors for the detection of pathogens.

Can Grafting Manage Fusarium Wilt Disease of Cucumber and Increase Productivity under Heat Stress?

Cucumber production is considered a crucial problem under biotic and abiotic stress, particularly in arid and semi-arid zones. The current study investigated the impact of grafted cucumber plants on five cucurbit rootstocks under infection with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum alone and in combination with heat stress in two different locations (i.e., Kafr El-Sheikh and Sidi Salem) during the year of 2021. The rootstock of VSS-61 F₁ displayed the highest level of resistance with values 20.8 and 16.6% for wilt incidence and 79.2 and 83.4% for the wilt reduction, respectively for both locations. This rootstock showed the lowest disease severity of fusarium wilt (15.3 and 12%), and high grafting efficiency (85 and 88%), respectively in both locations. Grafting also improved plant vigor and cucumber production under heat stress (40-43 °C). The rootstocks VSS-61 F₁, Ferro and Super Shintoza significantly increased the total yield of cucumber plants compared to non-grafted cucumber and the rootstock Bottle gourd in both locations. Further studies are needed on grafted plants under multiple stresses in terms of plant biological levels, including physiological, biochemical and genetic attributes.

The Effect of Bio-Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles on Germination, Early Seedling Development, and Metabolome of Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Changes in the metabolome of germinating seeds and seedlings caused by metal nanoparticles are poorly understood. In the present study, the effects of bio-synthesized silver nanoparticles ((Bio)Ag NPs) on grains germination, early seedlings development, and metabolic profiles of roots, coleoptile, and endosperm of wheat were analyzed. Grains germinated well in (Bio)Ag NPs suspensions at the concentration in the range 10–40 mg/L. However, the growth of coleoptile was inhibited by 25%, regardless of (Bio)Ag NPs concentration tested, whereas the growth of roots gradually slowed down along with the increasing concentration of (Bio)Ag NPs. The deleterious effect of Ag NPs on roots was manifested by their shortening, thickening, browning of roots tips, epidermal cell death, progression from apical meristem up to root hairs zone, and the inhibition of root hair development. (Bio)Ag NPs stimulated ROS production in roots and affected the metabolic profiles of all tissues. Roots accumulated sucrose, maltose, 1-kestose, phosphoric acid, and some amino acids (i.e., proline, aspartate/asparagine, hydroxyproline, and branched-chain amino acids). In coleoptile and endosperm, contrary to roots, the concentration of most metabolites decreased. Moreover, coleoptile accumulated galactose. Changes in the concentration of polar metabolites in seedlings revealed the affection of primary metabolism, disturbances in the mobilization of storage materials, and a translocation of sugars and amino acids from the endosperm to growing seedlings.

Suppression of Bacterial Leaf Spot by Green Synthesized Silica Nanoparticles and Antagonistic Yeast Improves Growth, Productivity and Quality of Sweet Pepper

Plants are challenged with many kinds of biotic stresses caused by different living organisms, which result in various types of diseases, infections, and damage to crop plants and ultimately affect crop productivity. Plant disease management strategies based on current approaches are necessary for sustainable agriculture. A pot experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions to evaluate the potential of green synthesized silica nanoparticles (SiO2-NPs) and antagonistic yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) against pepper bacterial leaf spot disease, caused by Xanthomonas vesicatoria. In addition, to assess their efficacy and suppressive effects in reducing disease severity and improving sweet pepper growth, productivity, and quality. Results revealed that the combination of BCA (5%) and SiO2-NPs (150 ppm) was the most effective treatment for reducing disease severity and improving vegetative growth characters, mineral contents (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and Si in leaves), as well as stimulating polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity of sweet pepper leaves at 90 days from transplanting, while also at harvesting time enhancing sweet pepper fruit yield quality parameters significantly. In conclusion, green synthesized silica nanoparticles combined with antagonistic yeast have the potential to suppress a bacterial leaf spot disease with ecologically-sound management, while also boosting sweet pepper growth, productivity, and quality.

Persea Americana Agro-Industrial Waste Biorefinery for Sustainable High-Value-Added Products

Significant problems have arisen in recent years, such as global warming and hunger. These complications are related to the depletion and exploitation of natural resources, as well as environmental pollution. In this context, bioprocesses and biorefinery can be used to manage agro-industrial wastes for obtaining high-value-added products. A large number of by-products are composed of lignin and cellulose, having the potential to be exploited sustainably for chemical and biological conversion. The biorefinery of agro-industrial wastes has applications in many fields, such as pharmaceuticals, medicine, material engineering, and environmental remediation. A comprehensive approach has been developed toward the agro-industrial management of avocado (Persea americana) biomass waste, which can be transformed into high-value-added products to mitigate global warming, save non-renewable energy, and contribute to health and science. Therefore, this work presents a comprehensive review on avocado fruit waste biorefinery and its possible applications as biofuel, as drugs, as bioplastics, in the environmental field, and in emerging nanotechnological opportunities for economic and scientific growth.

Survivability and controlled release of alginate-microencapsulated Pseudomonas fluorescens VUPF506 and their effects on biocontrol of Rhizoctonia solani on potato

Preserving the efficacy of plant probiotic bacteria in soil is a major challenge to the biological control of plant diseases. The microencapsulation technique is an important step in preserving the viability and activity of probiotics in adverse environmental conditions. The main objective of this study was to choose an appropriate coating for probiotic encapsulation. For this purpose, the survivability and controlled release of Pseudomonas fluorescens VUPF506 encapsulated with alginate (Alg) combined with whey protein concentrate (WPC), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and peanut butter (PB) were evaluated. Moreover, the encapsulated cells were evaluated to control for Rhizoctonia solani in potato plants under in vivo conditions. The results showed that all tested wall material maintained more than 80% of the bacterial cells. The Alg-WPC microcapsules provided a better controlled release over two months. Interestingly, the greenhouse experiment also revealed that the treatment of potato plants with Alg-WPC microcapsules was the most effective treatment, suppressing 90% of the pathogen. The results showed that Alg-WPC is the most promising combination to improve the survivability of P. fluorescens VUPF506. Moreover, it can be used as a fertilizer due to its content of valuable amino acids.

Role of model organisms and nanocompounds in human health risk assessment

Safeguarding the environment is one of the most serious modern challenges, as increasing amounts of chemical compounds are produced and released into the environment, causing a serious threat to the future health of the Earth as well as organisms and humans on a global scale. Ecotoxicology is an integrative science involving different physical, chemical, biological, and social aspects concerned with the study of toxic effects caused by natural or synthetic pollutants on any constituents of ecosystems, including animals (including humans), plants, or microorganisms, in an integral context. In recent decades, this science has undergone considerable development by addressing environmental risk assessments through the biomonitoring of indicator species using biomarkers, model organisms, and nanocompounds in toxicological assays. Since a single taxon cannot be representative of complex ecotoxicological effects and mechanisms of action of a chemical, the use of test batteries is widely accepted in ecotoxicology. Test batteries include properly chosen organisms that are easy to breed, adapt easily to laboratory conditions, and are representative of the environmental compartment under consideration. One of the main issues of toxicological and ecotoxicological research is to gain a deeper understanding of how data should be obtained through laboratory and field approaches using experimental models and how they could be extrapolated to humans. There is a tendency to replace animal tests with in vitro systems and to perform them according to standardized analytical methods and the rules of the so-called good laboratory practice (GLP). This paper aims to review this topic to stimulate both efforts to understand the toxicological and ecotoxicological properties of natural and synthetic chemicals and the possible use of such data for application to humans.

Recent advances in the applications of nano-agrochemicals for sustainable agricultural development

Modern agricultural practices have triggered the process of agricultural pollution. This process can cause the degradation of eco-systems, land, and environment owing to the modern-day by-products of agriculture. The substantial use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, and, contaminated water for irrigation cause further damage to agriculture. The current scenario of the agriculture and food sector has therefore become unsustainable. Nanotechnology has provided innovative and resourceful frontiers to the agriculture sector by contributing practical applications in conventional agricultural ways and practices. There is a large possibility that agri-nanotechnology can have a significant impact on the sustainable agriculture and crop growth. Recent research has shown the potential of nanotechnology in improving the agriculture sector by enhancing the efficiency of agricultural inputs and providing solutions to agricultural problems for improving food productivity and security. The prospective use of nanoscale agrochemicals such as nanofertilizers, nanopesticides, nanosensors, and nanoformulations in agriculture has transformed traditional agro-practices, making them more sustainable and efficient. However, the application of these nano-products in real field situations raises concern about nanomaterial safety, exposure levels, and toxicological repercussions to the environment and human health. The present review gives an insight into recent advancements in nanotechnology-based agrochemicals that have revolutionized the agriculture sector. Further, the implementation barriers related to the nanomaterial use in agriculture, their commercialization potential, and the need for policy regulations to assess possible nano-agricultural risks are also discussed.

Discovery of a Novel Lineage Burkholderia cepacia ST 1870 Endophytically Isolated from Medicinal Polygala paniculata Which Shows Potent In Vitro Antileishmanial and Antimicrobial Effects

In this study, we report the isolation and identification of an endophytic strain of Burkholderia cepacia (COPS strain) associated with Polygala paniculata roots. Polygala plants are rich sources of promising microbiomes, of which the literature reports several pharmacological effects, such as trypanocidal, antinociceptive, anesthetic, anxiolytics, and anticonvulsant activities. B. cepacia COPS belongs to a new sequence type (ST 1870) and harbors a genome estimated in 8.3 Mbp which exhibits the aminoglycosides and beta-lactams resistance genes aph(3′)-IIa and bla_TEM-116, respectively. Analysis performed using MLST, average nucleotide identity, and digital DNA-DNA hybridization support its species-level identification and reveals its novel housekeeping genes alleles gyrB, lepA, and phaC. The root endophyte B. cepacia COPS drew our attention from a group of 14 bacterial isolates during the primary screening for being potentially active against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 29213, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Micrococcus luteus ATCC 9341, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, and Candida albicans ATCC 10231 and exhibited the broad-spectrum activity against phytopathogenic fungi. In addition, COPS strain showed production of protease, lipase, and esterase in solid media, and its natural product extract showed potent inhibition against fungal plant pathogens, such as Moniliophthora perniciosa, whose antagonism index (89.32%) exceeded the positive control (74.17%), whereas Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and Ceratocystis paradoxa showed high percentages of inhibition (85.53% and 82.69%, respectively). COPS crude extract also significantly inhibited S. epidermidis ATCC 35984, E. faecium ATCC 700221 (MIC values of 32 μg/mL for both), E. faecalis ATCC 29212 (64 μg/mL), and S. aureus ATCC 25923 (128 μg/mL). We observed moderate antagonistic activity against A. baumannii ATCC 19606 and E. coli ATCC 25922 (both at 512 μg/mL), as well as potent cytotoxic effects on Leishmania infantum and Leishmania major promastigote forms with 78.25% and 57.30% inhibition. In conclusion, this study presents for the first time the isolation of an endophytic B. cepacia strain associated with P. paniculata and enough evidence that these plants may be considered a rich source of microbes for the fight against neglected diseases.

Nanosilica facilitates silica uptake, growth and stress tolerance in plants

Nanobiotechnology has gained considerable momentum in the field of plant sciences in the last few years. Nanomaterials of various metal oxides has been utilized for enhancing growth, productivity and in crop protection strategies. Among them, nanosilica has emerged as a key player in orchestrating plant growth and conferring tolerance to various abiotic and biotic stresses. Nanosilica has increased absorptivity that accounts for an increased uptake of silica, although the exact mechanism is not fully understood. Nanosilica uptake in the roots and leaves reduces the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and membrane lipid peroxidation. It is known to restrict the entry of sodium ions and other heavy metals in plants. Concurrently, nanosilica deposition in the leaf tissue enhances the plant defense against pathogens. The present review attempts to provide a novel insight into its uptake mechanism and nanosilica mediated abiotic and biotic stress tolerance in plants. This review will also shed light on the prospects and challenges related to application of nanosilica based fertilizers.

Mitigating effects of Bean yellow mosaic virus infection in faba bean using new carboxymethyl chitosan-titania nanobiocomposites

Bean yellow mosaic virus (BYMV) is the main cause of the mosaic and malformation of many plants, worldwide. Thus, the triggering of plant systemic resistance against BYMV is of great interest. In this endeavor, we aimed to explore the capacity of new carboxymethyl chitosan-titania nanobiocomposites (NBCs, NBC1,2) to trigger faba bean plants resistance against BYMV. Effects of NBCs on faba bean (Vicia faba L.) disease severity (DS), growth parameters, and antioxidant defense system activity were investigated under BYMV stress. Noticeably that the DS in NBCs-treated faba bean was significantly reduced compared to untreated plants. Moreover, treatment with NBCs was remarkably increased growth indices, photosynthetic pigments, membrane stability index, and relative water content compared to challenge control. Additionally, enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants and total soluble protein were significantly increased. Contrary, electrolyte leakage, hydrogen peroxide, and lipid peroxidation were reduced. Interestingly that NBC1 has higher efficacy than NBC2 in triggering plant immune-system against BYMV as indicated from DS percentage (DS = 10.66% and 19.33% in case of plants treated with NBC1 and NBC2, respectively). This could be attributed to the higher content of TNPs in NBC1 (21.58%) as compared to NBC2 (14.32%). Overall, NBCs offer safe and economic antiviral agents against BYMV.

Effects of different graphene-based nanomaterials as elicitors on growth and ganoderic acid production by Ganoderma lucidum

Graphene-based nanomaterials (GBNs) have attracted considerable interest nowadays due to their wide range of applications. However, very little attention has been paid to the application of nanomaterials as potential elicitors for production of valuable metabolites. Herein, aiming to earn insight into effects of nanomaterials on secondary metabolite biosynthesis by medicinal fungi, we evaluated the influence of GBNs on growth and production of ganoderic acid (GA) by Ganoderma lucidum in submerged culture. Graphene oxide (GO), reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and rGO/Fe₃ O₄ nanocomposite were synthesized successfully and characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy analysis. The prepared nanomaterials were added to the culture of G. lucidum at final concentrations of 50, 100, and 150 mg/L on Day 5. The results showed that the elicitation of G. lucidum with GO and rGO decreased the cell dry weight and GA production slightly, especially in higher concentrations. However, rGO/Fe₃ O₄ nanocomposite not negatively affected cell growth and improved GA production. G. lucidum growth rate responded to elicitation experiments differently and depended on the type of nanomaterials and their concentrations, but almost all GBNs caused an increase in GA content (mg/100 mg dry weight). Also, field emission scanning electron microscopy morphological study showed that under elicitation, mycelia were more condensed and tightly stacked together. The findings from this study may suggest that GBNs in low concentrations could be applied as elicitors to secondary metabolites production from higher fungus, but further environmental, physiological, and biological studies required.
