Abstract
The purple acid phosphatase was purified from 5.9-fold to apparent homogeneity from Anagelis arvensis seeds using SP-Sephadex C-50 and Sephadex G-100 chromatography. The results of residual activity tests conducted using different temperature ranges (50-70 °C) were calculated as the activation energy (Ed = 72 kJ/mol), enthalpy (69.31 ≤ (ΔH° ≤ 69.10 kJ/mol), entropy (-122.48 ≤ ΔS° ≤ -121.13 J/mol·K), and Gibbs free energy (108.87 ≤ ΔG° ≤ 111.25 kJ/mol) of the enzyme irreversible denaturation. These thermodynamic parameters indicate that this novel PAP is highly thermostable and may be significant for use in industrial applications. However, it may be confirmed by stopped-flow measurements that this substitution produces a chromophoric Fe3+ site and a Pi-substrate interaction that is about ten times faster. Additionally, these data show that phenyl phosphate hydrolysis proceeds more rapidly in metal form of A. arvensis PAP than the creation of a μ-1,3 phosphate complex. The Fe3+ site in the native Fe3+-Mn2+ derivative interacts with it at a faster rate than in the Fe3+-Fe2+ form. This is most likely caused by a network of hydrogen bonds between the first and second coordination spheres. This suggests that the choice of metal ions plays a significant role in regulating the activity of this enzyme.

Abstract
Legume crops establish symbiosis with nitrogen-fixing rhizobia for biological nitrogen fixation (BNF), a process that provides a prominent natural nitrogen source in agroecosystems; and efficient nodulation and nitrogen fixation processes require a large amount of phosphorus (P). Here, a role of GmPAP4, a nodule-localized purple acid phosphatase, in BNF and seed yield was functionally characterized in whole transgenic soybean (Glycine max) plants under a P-limited condition. GmPAP4 was specifically expressed in the infection zones of soybean nodules and its expression was greatly induced in low P stress. Altered expression of GmPAP4 significantly affected soybean nodulation, BNF, and yield under the P-deficient condition. Nodule number, nodule fresh weight, nodule nitrogenase, APase activities, and nodule total P content were significantly increased in GmPAP4 overexpression (OE) lines. Structural characteristics revealed by toluidine blue staining showed that overexpression of GmPAP4 resulted in a larger infection area than wild-type (WT) control. Moreover, the plant biomass and N and P content of shoot and root in GmPAP4 OE lines were also greatly improved, resulting in increased soybean yield in the P-deficient condition. Taken together, our results demonstrated that GmPAP4, a purple acid phosphatase, increased P utilization efficiency in nodules under a P-deficient condition and, subsequently, enhanced symbiotic BNF and seed yield of soybean.

Abstract
Purple acid phosphatases (PAPs) are involved in activating the rhizosphere's organic phosphorus (P) and promoting P recycling during plant development, especially under the long-term P deficiency conditions in acid soil. However, the function of BnaPAPs in response to P deficiency stress in Brassica napus has rarely been explored. In this study, we found that the acid phosphatase activities (APA) of rapeseed shoot and root increased under P deficienct conditions. Genome-wide identification found that 82 PAP genes were unevenly distributed on 19 chromosomes in B. napus, which could be divided into eight subfamilies. The segmental duplication events were the main driving force for expansion during evolution, and the gene structures and conserved motifs of most members within the same subfamily were highly conservative. Moreover, the expression levels of 37 and 23 different expressed genes were induced by low P in leaf and root, respectively. BnaA09.PAP10a and BnaC09.PAP10a were identified as candidate genes via interaction networks. Significantly, both BnaPAP10a overexpression lines significantly increased root-related APA and total phosphate concentration under P deficiency and ATP supply conditions, thereby improving plant growth and root length. In summary, our results provided a valuable foundation for further study of BnaPAP functions.

Abstract
Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient, but easily fixed in soils. Therefore, most of soil P exists in the form of inaccessible organic phosphorus (Po), particularly phytate-P. Root-associated purple acid phosphatases (PAPs) are considered to play a crucial role in phosphate (Pi) scavenging in soils. However, evidence for regulating root-associated PAPs in utilization of extracellular phytate-P remain largely unknown in plants at both transcriptional and posttranslational levels. In this study, a Pi-starvation responsive GmPAP15a was identified in soybean (Glycine max). Overexpressing GmPAP15a led to significant increases in root-associated phytase activities, as well as total P content when phytate-P was supplied as the sole P resource in soybean hairy roots. Meanwhile, mass spectrometry (MS) analysis showed GmPAP15a was glycosylated at Asn144 and Asn502 , and its glycan structures of N-linked oligosaccharide chains exhibited microheterogeneity. Moreover, two homologues of AtPHR1, GmPHR9 and GmPHR32 were found to activate GmPAP15a transcription through luciferase activity analysis. Taken together, it is strongly suggested that GmPAP15a plays a vital role in phytate-P utilization in soybean, which might be regulated at both transcriptional and glycosylation modification levels. Our results highlight the GmPHR9/GmPHR32-GmPAP15a signalling pathway might present, and control phytate-P utilization in soybean.

Abstract
Plants' requirement of Phosphorus (P) as an essential macronutrient is obligatory for their normal growth and metabolism. Besides restricting plants' primary growth, P depletion affects both primary and secondary metabolism and leads to altered levels of sugars, metabolites, amino acids, and other secondary compounds. Such metabolic shifts help plants optimize their metabolism and growth under P limited conditions. Under P deprivation, both sugar levels and their mobilization change that influences the expression of Pi starvation-inducible genes. Increased sugar repartitioning from shoot to root help root growth and organic acids secretion that in turn promotes phosphate (Pi) uptake from the soil. Other metabolic changes such as lipid remodeling or P reallocation from older to younger leaves release the P from its bound forms in the cell. In this review, we summarize the metabolic footprinting of Pi-starved plants with respect to the benefits offered by such metabolic changes to intracellular Pi homeostasis.

Abstract
Acid phosphatase(ACP) is an important immune enzyme in crustacean humoral immunity. At present, the research on ACP mainly focuses on the biochemical properties of the enzyme, while few studies on gene expression. In this study, ShACP was cloned and the effect of cadmium stress on the expression and function of ShACP in the freshwater crab Sinopotamon henanense was studied. Analysis of the ShACP sequence and tissue distribution results showed that the cDNA sequence of ShACP was 1629 bp, including 48 bp 5' untranslated region, 1209 bp open reading frame region, and 372 bp 3' untranslated region, encoding 402 amino acids. ShACP contained multiple phosphorylation sites and mainly played a role in the hemolymph. Under low-concentration cadmium stress, the body improved immunity by enhancing the expression of ShACP, while high-concentration cadmium stress inhibited the expression of ShACP. ShACP can promote the phagocytosis of hemocytes, while cadmium stress reduced the phagocytosis of hemocytes. This study provides a theoretical basis for further research on the immune system of crabs and is of great significance for the study of crustacean immune responses under heavy metal stress.

Abstract
Improvement in acid phosphatase (APase) activity is considered as an important approach to enhance phosphorus (P) utilization in crops. Here, GmPAP14 was significantly induced by low P (LP), and its transcription level in ZH15 (P efficient soybean) was higher than in NMH (P inefficient soybean) under LP conditions. Further analyses demonstrated that there were several variations in gDNA (G-GmPAP14Z and G-GmPAP14N) and the promoters (P-GmPAP14Z and P-GmPAP14N) of GmPAP14, which might bring about differential transcriptional levels of GmPAP14 in ZH15 and NMH. Histochemical staining measurements revealed that a stronger GUS signal was present in transgenic Arabidopsis with P-GmPAP14Z under LP and normal P (NP) conditions compared with the P-GmPAP14N plant. Functional research demonstrated that transgenic Arabidopsis with G-GmPAP14Z had a higher level of GmPAP14 expression than the G-GmPAP14N plant. Meanwhile, higher APase activity was also observed in the G-GmPAP14Z plant, which led to increases in shoot weight and P content. Additionally, validation of variation in 68 soybean accessions showed that varieties with Del36 displayed higher APase activities than the del36 plant. Thus, these results uncovered that allelic variation in GmPAP14 predominantly altered gene expression to influence APase activity, which provided a possible direction for research of this gene in plants.

Abstract
Organic fertilizer is commonly used to increase crop yields and improve soil quality. However, it is unclear whether crops adapt to organic fertilizer by regulating metabolic pathways that are involved in nutrient utilization. In this study, we focused on the organic phosphorus (Po) in organic fertilizer and, using watermelon, investigated changes in gene expression and metabolic pathways in response to organic fertilizer and the combination of chemical fertilizer and organic fertilizer (chemical fertilizer 70% and organic fertilizer 30%, based on phosphorus supply). Purple acid phosphatase (PAP) gene expression was upregulated in leaves and roots of watermelon grown in organic fertilizer alone and in the combination of chemical/organic fertilizer, resulting in enhanced phosphatase activity in roots. When the ratio of chemical to organic fertilizer was 85/15, root-associated acid phosphatase (APase) activity increased over chemical fertilizer alone. This formulation also resulted in increased inorganic phosphate (Pi) concentration in roots and leaves, and the upregulation of the secretory APase genes ClaPAP10/12/15/26, and ClaPAP18 in roots. In conclusion, watermelon responds to organic fertilizer by upregulating expression of secretory ClaPAP genes, subsequently enhancing root-associated APase activity further improving the hydrolysis of phosphomonoesters, and ultimately facilitating Po utilization by roots. The mechanisms of P utilization by roots comprise the enhancement of APase and phytase activity, absorption of small Po molecules, uptake of Pi, and the increase of lateral root number when organic fertilizer is applied to the plants. These findings help to establish the mechanisms by which plants respond to organic fertilizer by regulating metabolic pathways at the transcriptional level.

Abstract
The rhizosheath is a belowground area that acts as a communication hub at the root-soil interface to promote water and nutrient acquisition. Certain crops, such as white lupin (Lupinus albus), acquire large amounts of phosphorus (P), owing partially to exudation of acid phosphatases (APases). Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria also increase soil P availability. However, potential synergistic effects of root APases and rhizosheath-associated microbiota on P acquisition require further research. In this study, we investigated the roles of root purple APases (PAPs) and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria in rhizosheath formation and P acquisition under conditions of soil drying (SD) and P treatment (+P: soil with P fertilizer; -P: soil without fertilizer). We expressed purple acid phosphatase12 (LaPAP12) in white lupin and rice (Oryza sativa) plants and analyzed the rhizosheath-associated microbiome. Increased or heterologous LaPAP12 expression promoted APase activity and rhizosheath formation, resulting in increased P acquisition mainly under SD-P conditions. It also increased the abundance of members of the genus Bacillus in the rhizosheath-associated microbial communities of white lupin and rice. We isolated a phosphate-solubilizing, auxin-producing Bacillus megaterium strain from the rhizosheath of white lupin and used this to inoculate white lupin and rice plants. Inoculation promoted rhizosheath formation and P acquisition, especially in plants with increased LaPAP12 expression and under SD-P conditions, suggesting a functional role of the bacteria in alleviating P deficit stress via rhizosheath formation. Together, our results suggest a synergistic enhancing effect of LaPAP12 and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria on rhizosheath formation and P acquisition under SD-P conditions.

Abstract
Purple acid phosphatase (PAP) is an important plant acid phosphatase, which can secrete to the rhizosphere to decompose organophosphorus, promote phosphorus use efficiency, plant growth and development. However, little is known about the functions of intracellular PAP in plants, especially for soybean. Our previous study integrating QTL mapping and transcriptome analysis identified an promising low phosphorus (LP)-induced gene GmPAP17. Here, we determined that GmPAP17 was mainly expressed in roots and had a strong response to LP stress. Furthermore, and the relative expression in the root of LP tolerant genotypes NN94-156 was significantly greater than that of LP sensitive genotype Bogao after LP stress treatment. The overexpression of GmPAP17 significantly enhanced both acid phosphatase activity and growth performance of hairy roots under LP stress condition, it was vice versa for RNAi interference of GmPAP17, indicating that GmPAP17 plays an important role in P use efficiency. Moreover, yeast two-hybrid and bimolecular fluorescence complementation analysis showed that GmRAP2.2 was involved in the regulation network of GmPAP17. Taken together, our results suggest that GmPAP17 is a novel plant PAP that functions in the adaptation of soybean to LP stress, possibly through its involvement in P recycling in plants.

Abstract
Low phosphorus (P) availability limits soybean growth and yield. A set of potential strategies for plant responses to P deficiency have been elucidated in the past decades, especially in model plants such as Arabidopsis thaliana and rice (Oryza sativa). Recently, substantial efforts focus on the mechanisms underlying P deficiency improvement in legume crops, especially in soybeans (Glycine max). This review summarizes recent advances in the morphological, metabolic, and molecular responses of soybean to phosphate (Pi) starvation through the combined analysis of transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics. Furthermore, we highlight the functions of the key factors controlling root growth and P homeostasis, base on which, a P signaling network in soybean was subsequently presumed. This review also discusses current barriers and depicts perspectives in engineering soybean cultivars with high P efficiency.

Abstract
Maize is one of the leading food crops and its kernel is rich in starch, lipids, protein and other energy substances. In addition, maize kernels also contain many trace elements that are potentially beneficial to human health, such as vitamins, minerals and other secondary metabolites. However, gene resources that could be applied for nutrient improvement are limited in maize. In this review, we summarized 107 genes that are associated with nutrient content from different plant species and identified 246 orthologs from the maize genome. In addition, we constructed physical maps and performed a detailed expression pattern analysis for the 246 maize potential gene resources. Combining expression profiles and their potential roles in maize nutrient improvement, genetic engineering by editing or ectopic expression of these genes in maize are expected to improve resistant starch, oil, essential amino acids, vitamins, iron, zinc and anthocyanin levels of maize grains. Thus, this review provides valuable gene resources for maize nutrient improvement.

Abstract
Plants strive for phosphorus (P), which is an essential mineral for their life. Since P availability is limiting in most of the world's soils, plants have evolved with a complex network of genes and their regulatory mechanisms to cope with soil P deficiency. Among them, purple acid phosphatases (PAPs) are predominantly associated with P remobilization within the plant and acquisition from the soil by hydrolyzing organic P compounds. P in such compounds remains otherwise unavailable to plants for assimilation. PAPs are ubiquitous in plants, and similar enzymes exist in bacteria, fungi, mammals, and unicellular eukaryotes, but having some differences in their catalytic center. In the recent past, PAPs' roles have been extended to multiple plant processes like flowering, seed development, senescence, carbon metabolism, response to biotic and abiotic stresses, signaling, and root development. While new functions have been assigned to PAPs, the underlying mechanisms remained understood poorly. Here, we review the known functions of PAPs, the regulatory mechanisms, and their relevance in crop improvement for P-use-efficiency. We then discuss the mechanisms behind their functions and propose areas worthy of future research. Finally, we argue that PAPs could be a potential target for improving P utilization in crops. In turn, this is essential for sustainable agriculture.

Abstract
Phosphorus (P) limitation affects phytoplankton growth and population size in aquatic systems, and consequently limits aquatic primary productivity. Plants have evolved a range of metabolic responses to cope with P limitation, such as accumulation of purple acid phosphatases (PAPs) to enhance acquisition of phosphates. However, it remains unknown whether algae have evolved a similar mechanism. In this study, we examined the role of PAPs in the model microalga Phaeodactylum tricornutum. Expression of PAP1 was enhanced in P. tricornutum cells grown on organophosphorus compared to inorganic phosphate. PAP1 overexpression improved cellular growth and biochemical composition in a growth-phase dependent manner. PAP1 promoted growth and photosynthesis during growth phases and reallocated carbon flux towards lipogenesis during the stationary phase. PAP1 was found to be localized in the endoplasmic reticulum and it orchestrated the expression of genes involved in key metabolic pathways and translocation of inorganic P (Pi), thereby improving energy use, reducing equivalents and antioxidant potential. RNAi of PAP1 induced expression of its homolog PAP2, thereby compensating for the Pi scavenging activity of PAP1. Our results demonstrate that PAP1 brings about sequential regulation of metabolism, and provide novel insights into algal phosphorus metabolism and aquatic primary productivity.

Abstract
Low phosphate (Pi) availability limits crop growth and yield in acid soils. Although root-associated acid phosphatases (APases) play an important role in extracellular organic phosphorus (P) utilization, they remain poorly studied in soybean (Glycine max), an important legume crop. In this study, dynamic changes in intracellular (leaf and root) and root-associated APase activities were investigated under both Pi-sufficient and Pi-deficient conditions. Moreover, genome-wide identification of members of the purple acid phosphatase (PAP) family and their expression patterns in response to Pi starvation were analyzed in soybean. The functions of both GmPAP7a and GmPAP7b, whose expression is up regulated by Pi starvation, were subsequently characterized. Phosphate starvation resulted in significant increases in intracellular APase activities in the leaves after 4 days, and in root intracellular and associated APase activities after 1 day, but constant increases were observed only for root intracellular and associated APase activities during day 5-16 of P deficiency in soybean. Moreover, a total of 38 GmPAP members were identified in the soybean genome. The transcripts of 19 GmPAP members in the leaves and 17 in the roots were upregulated at 16 days of P deficiency despite the lack of a response for any GmPAP members to Pi starvation at 2 days. Pi starvation upregulated GmPAP7a and GmPAP7b, and they were subsequently selected for further analysis. Both GmPAP7a and GmPAP7b exhibited relatively high activities against adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in vitro. Furthermore, overexpressing GmPAP7a and GmPAP7b in soybean hairy roots significantly increased root-associated APase activities and thus facilitated extracellular ATP utilization. Taken together, these results suggest that GmPAP7a and GmPAP7b might contribute to root-associated APase activities, thus having a function in extracellular ATP utilization in soybean.

Abstract
Phosphorus (P) deficiency is a major limitation for legume crop production. Although overall adaptations of plant roots to P deficiency have been extensively studied, only fragmentary information is available in regard to root nodule responses to P deficiency. In this study, genome wide transcriptome analysis was conducted using RNA-seq analysis in soybean nodules grown under P-sufficient (500 μM KH₂PO₄) and P-deficient (25 μM KH₂PO₄) conditions to investigate molecular mechanisms underlying soybean (Glycine max) nodule adaptation to phosphate (Pi) starvation. Phosphorus deficiency significantly decreased soybean nodule growth and nitrogenase activity. Nodule Pi concentrations declined by 49% in response to P deficiency, but this was well below the 87% and 88% decreases observed in shoots and roots, respectively. Nodule transcript profiling revealed that a total of 2055 genes exhibited differential expression patterns between Pi sufficient and deficient conditions. A set of (differentially expressed genes) DEGs appeared to be involved in maintaining Pi homeostasis in soybean nodules, including eight Pi transporters (PTs), eight genes coding proteins containing the SYG1/PHO81/XPR1 domain (SPXs), and 16 purple acid phosphatases (PAPs). The results suggest that a complex transcriptional regulatory network participates in soybean nodule adaption to Pi starvation, most notable a Pi signaling pathway, are involved in maintaining Pi homeostasis in nodules.

Abstract
Understanding plant phosphorus (P) assimilation and its root morphological responses is important to acquire an ideal material for remediation of P-enriched environments. Pot experiments were conducted to explore P accumulation and root morphological traits in a mining ecotype (ME) and non-mining ecotype (NME) of Polygonum hydropiper under different organic P (Po) sources (G1P, AMP, ATP, IHP) and inorganic P (Pi) source (KH2PO4), and also their responses to a high level of IHP for different growth periods. Both ecotypes showed higher biomass in Pi and IHP treatments than other Po sources. P accumulation in seedlings were in the order of Pi > IHP > other Po media. Extending the growth period increased biomass and P accumulation in both ecotypes. The ME demonstrated 1.11-1.46 times higher P accumulation than the NME. Seedlings fed with IHP demonstrated significantly greater morphological parameters of fine, medium, and thick roots compared to other Po sources. Total root length, surface area, and volume of both ecotypes significantly increased with the prolonged growth period. The ME has a higher ability to develop root system and exhibits better distribution of fine roots to enhance P accumulation from high P media, and thus it is a worthy material for P-phytoextraction.

Abstract
Induction and secretion of acid phosphatases (APases) is considered to be an important strategy for improving plant growth under conditions of low inorganic phosphate (Pi). Purple acid phosphatases (PAPs), are an important class of plant APases that could be secreted into the rhizosphere to utilize organic phosphorus (Po) for plant growth and development. To date, only a few members of the PAP family have been identified in soybean. In this paper, we identified a secreted PAP in soybean, GmPAP14, and investigated its role in utilizing external phytate, the main form of organic phosphorus in the soil. An analysis of its expression and promoter showed that GmPAP14 was mainly expressed in the root and was strongly induced following Po treatment, during which its expression expanded from meristematic to maturation zones and root hairs. In vitro enzyme assays indicated that GmPAP14 had a relatively high phytase activity. Furthermore, GmPAP14 overexpression increased secreted APase activities and phytase activities, leading to the improved use of external plant phytate, higher phosphorus content, and increased shoot weight. Thus, these results confirmed that GmPAP14 is an important gene induced in response to Po, and that it predominantly participates in utilizing external Po to enhance plant growth and development.

Abstract
Induction of secreted and intracellular purple acid phosphatases (PAPs; EC 3.1.3.2) is widely recognized as an adaptation of plants to phosphorus (P) deficiency. The secretion of PAPs plays important roles in P acquisition. However, little is known about the functions of intracellular PAP in plants and nodules. In this study, we identified a novel PAP gene GmPAP21 in soybean. Expression of GmPAP21 was induced by P limitation in nodules, roots and old leaves, and increased in roots with increasing duration of P starvation. Furthermore, the induction of GmPAP21 in nodules and roots was more intensive than in leaves in both P-efficient genotype HN89 and P-inefficient genotype HN112 in response to P starvation, and the relative expression in the leaves and nodules of HN89 was significantly greater than that of HN112 after P deficiency treatment. Further functional analyses showed that over-expressing GmPAP21 significantly enhanced both acid phosphatase activity and growth performance of hairy roots under P starvation condition, indicating that GmPAP21 plays an important role in P utilization. Moreover, GUS expression driven by GmPAP21 promoter was shown in the nodules besides roots. Overexpression of GmPAP21 in transgenic soybean significantly inhibited nodule growth, and thereby affected plant growth after inoculation with rhizobia. This suggests that GmPAP21 is also possibly involved in regulating P metabolism in nodules. Taken together, our results suggest that GmPAP21 is a novel plant PAP that functions in the adaptation of soybean to P starvation, possibly through its involvement in P recycling in plants and P metabolism in nodules.

Genotypic Differences in Phosphorus Efficiency and the Performance of Physiological Characteristics in Response to Low Phosphorus Stress of Soybean in Southwest of China. Abstract
Southwest of China is one of the major soybean (Glycine max L.) production regions in China with low availability of soil phosphorus (P). Whereas little information is available on P-efficient soybean genotypes in this region, even though using P-efficient soybean genotypes is a sustainable P management strategy for enhancing yield and P use efficiency. To assess the genetic variation on P use efficiency, 274 soybean genotypes were employed to compare the yields and P acquisition potentials in the field. Additionally, 10 representational genotypes (5 P-efficient genotypes and 5 P-inefficient genotypes) were grown in hydroponic media containing low P treatment (0.05 mM L-1) and high P treatment (0.25 mM L-1) to further investigate P assimilation characteristics and the related mechanisms of P-efficient soybean genotypes. In the field trial, the models described the relationships between yield and seed P concentration (R2 = 0.85), shoot P accumulation (R2 = 0.84), HI (R2 = 0.82) well. The yield, seed P concentration and shoot P accumulation ranged from 5.5 to 36.0 g plant-1, from 0.045 to 0.93% and from 0.065 to 0.278 mg plant-1, respectively. In the hydroponic trial, P-efficient genotypes under low P treatment showed significantly better plant growth, P accumulation and root: shoot ratio than P-inefficient genotypes. Simultaneously, total root length, specific root length, root surface area and root volume of P-efficient were significantly greater than P-inefficient under low P treatment. Higher rate of organic acid exudation and acid phosphatase activities was observed in the P-efficient soybean genotypes under low P condition when compared to the P-inefficient soybean genotypes. It indicated that significant genetic variation for P use efficiency existed in this region, and the P-efficient soybean genotypes, especially E311 and E141, demonstrated great tolerance to P deficiency, which could be potential materials using in improving production and P use efficiency in low availability of soil P region.

Ye D, Li T, Zheng Z, Zhang X, Chen G, Yu H. Root physiological adaptations involved in enhancing P assimilation in mining and non-mining ecotypes of Polygonum hydropiper grown under organic P media. FRONTIERS IN PLANT SCIENCE 2015; 6:36. Abstract
It is important to seek out plant species, high in phosphorus (P) uptake, for phytoremediation of P-enriched environments with a large amount of organic P (Po). P assimilation characteristics and the related mechanisms of Polygonum hydropiper were investigated in hydroponic media containing various concentrations of Po (1-8 mmol L(-1)) supplied as phytate. The mining ecotype (ME) showed significantly higher biomass in both shoots and roots compared to the non-mining ecotype (NME) at 4, 6, and 8 m mol L(-1). Shoot P content of both ecotypes increased up to 4 mmol L(-1) while root P content increased continually up to 8 mmol L(-1) for the ME and up to 6 mmol L(-1) for the NME. Root P content of the ME exceeded 1% dry weight under 6 and 8 mmol L(-1). The ME had significantly higher P accumulation in both shoots and roots compared to the NME supplied with 6 and 8 mmol L(-1). The ME showed higher total root length, specific root length, root surface area, root volume, and displayed significantly greater root length, root surface area, and root volume of lateral roots compared to the NME grown in all Po treatments. Average diameter of lateral roots was 0.17-19 mm for the ME and 0.18-0.21 mm for the NME. Greater acid phosphatase and phytase activities were observed in the ME grown under different levels of Po relative to the NME. This indicated fine root morphology, enhanced acid phosphatase and phytase activities might be adaptations to high Po media. Results from this study establish that the ME of P. hydropiper is capable of assimilating P from Po media and is a potential material for phytoremediation of polluted area with high Po.
